FCPX clip stacking ad infinitum

I'm wondering if there's anyway to work around this issue I'm experiencing.
I was just assembling my clips in a timeline. There were a couple of points where I had a series of short clips where I wanted/needed to expand the audio and video tracks so I could extend the audio under preceding and following clips in order to smooth their transition from one to another. As I did it, each successive clip was raised above the preceding one. Up and up they went. (or down, in the case of the disconnected audio tracks) Eventually I had this mountain of clips rising above the timeline that made it pretty difficult to keep track of things.
So my question: why? And can it be avoided? Why do these clips go up and up? In most cases there was no bumping into other clips and there was plenty of room for one clip to go up the next one down, the next one up, etc. in a more "zig-zag" pattern. Is fact, a number of times I tried dragging down a clip from its lofty heights towards the timeline where I could monitor it only to have it pop back up to its perch above.
Here's what I'm talking about in case I'm the only one experiencing this phenomenon (ha ha):
well...I was GOING to include a screen shot but neither Safari, Firefox nor Chrome will allow me to post any photo. Interesting. Well, I hope my verbal description suffices.

in addendum to Luis excellent advice:
I assume, you're talking about something like that?
What you like to accomplish is a J-cut (or L-cut - other way round ) and therefore you detached the audio.
aside the option to staple the clips in any order by drag'n moving with the mouse ....
As Luis already said, that's not needed, there's an easier and faster way, Apple describes here:
Final Cut Pro X: Create split edits

  • FCPX: Clips have dropped frames in timeline, but not in Event Library or VLC

I make movie montages (or supercuts as they're more widely known) and I'm constantly running into this issue. Here's my workflow:
    1) Convert movie to .mp4 using Handbrake
    2) Extract clip from converted movie using MPEG Streamclip
    3) Import clip into FCPX
In FCPX I have the project's framerate set to 23.98 at 1280x720. When converting a movie to .mp4, I set the framerate to 23.976 (NTSC) in Handbrake.
    - Clips play fine in VLC.
    - Clips play fine in the Event Library.
    - As soon as they're moved into the timeline, playback is choppy.
This doesn't happen with all clips, and there doesn't appear to be any rhyme or reason as to why one plays fine and the other doesn't. What am I missing? What should I be looking for when comparing clips?

  • Can no longer get FCPX clip search to find anything

    Image below demonstrates my quandry.
Clearly have a clip labeled "24fps".
    Searched for "24fps".
    Nothing found.
Happens no matter what I search search term I use in the event library. Fresh install of FCPX, there is only one event library present.

If you want to search for a keyword collection, choose "Keywords" from the search drop-down.

  • FCPX clip audio does not export, "Jingles" do.

When exporting my project from FCPX to Quicktime, the audio from my clips does not import but the jingles I used from the FCP media library do export.
    I get "Quicktime error: -50"
I do have the audio portions of the clips overlapping each other. Maybe this is why?
Could it be an issue of permissions? I ran disk permissions.
    Thanks,
    Grace

  • No audio in fcpx clip

I shot some video on an HVX200 in 1080 24p. It had the on camera mics on for reference audio. When I import the clips into FCPX there is no audio. However can see the waveform. The FCP Archive does have audio. When I import the clips I can play them back with audio in the Media Import window. HOwever when they get into my FCPX Event...no audio.
My other clips from the 6D play back just fine, and my other footage from the HVX200 work fine as well. This is the first time I've shot in 108024 so I'm wondering if it has something to do with that.

    Audio is 48khz, 4 mono.
    No waveforms.
No audio in the clips at all (events or when opened in timeline)
One odd bit of info. One clip has about 10 seconds of audio. I also noticed the clips appear to be playing back slowly. They say they are 23.98fps, but it seems like it is playing 30fps at 23.98 (ie slow motion). I wonder if it has to do with the capture of the clips. I used P2 cards and the clips spanned 2 cards.

  • Inserting multiple clips stacked on different tracks

    Hi All,
I know this has to have come up before, and my memory has the tingle that I thought I'd done this in the past, but I really can't seem to remember or find it now.
Basicly, Inserting multiple clips from project window into the timeline and stacking on different tracks (vertically) instead of Head to tail.

Ok so gonna end up answering my own question , after some playing around I found this way of doing it.
Select all files you want to insert
right click and select create multicam
sync via start unless you want to try and audio sync them (I use plural eyes 3)
    create sequence from multicam
    Ctrl double click the multicam
This gives you a sequence with all files on seperate tracks, if I don't really want/need a multicam for that particular project I cut and past into a new sequence then use plural to sync vid audio, otherwise i just sync in the multicam and im ready to go.
Although this works, there really should be an easier way, a shift + Ctrl while dropping on the timeline ... feature request !
ps. I read someone state that this was not a regularly needed funciton in premier .. I really dont know what work they are doing but i need this every single day !

  • Can't Add Transitions/All Clips Stacked in one Box in Sceneline

    Help-
I'm a total newbie with Premier Elements 7, but I'm about ready to throw a brick through my monitor.
I'm in Sceneline, and when I drag clips, they all get stacked on top of one another in the left box.  I can't add transitions (I can find them, but when i drag them onto the transition arrows nothing happens).
What is the trick to dragging clips into new entries on the Sceneline?
    Thanks in advance!
    Dean

The audio format (stereo or 5.1 surround sound) of your video does not match the audio format of the project preset you selected. In Timeline mode the first three tracks are reserved for the audio format determined by the project preset. If you use another audio format it will be placed on track 4. When this happens you can not see the clips in Sceneline mode... they are stacked as you are seeing.
Solution is to either use Timeline mode or if you wish to use Sceneline mode you have to use the correct project preset. HOWEVER... PE7 only supports 5.1 audio in AVCHD high definition projects... so if you have standard definition with 5.1 audio you have no choice other than to use Timeline mode. If you want to do any serious editing you will really need to use this mode anyway.

  • Dragging multiple media clips into vertically stacked tracks in the timeline? Is it possible?

Hoping that some Adobe Premiere Guru might be able to lend some insight into what seemingly should be a fairly simple thing to accomplish... but despite scouring the web, I can't seem to find a peep of a solution for it.
My neighbor (whom, incidentally, I convinced to go with Premiere CS5.5 as his NLE of choice in the wake of the FCPX uncertainty) is working on a "reality-style" project where they have a massive amount of cameras running simultaniouisly for hour upon hours on end. Think Big Brother House style.
Essentially for each hour of the footage, he is creating a project in which all the multiple camera footage (MOV) from that hour is listed/linked over in the project panel. For example, for HOUR ONE he has the footage from all 20 cameras (or whatever) for hour one listed there.
BASICALLY what he wants to be able to do is grab ALL the footage from those various cameras AT ONCE, DRAG them over to the timeline and when he drops them there, the video (and, inversely, the audio) clips STACK vertically, one on top of the other, each one taking its own track in the timeline.
Currently, of course, when he does this the footage arranges itself in the timeline end to end. In the case of my HOUR ONE, 20 CAMERA example, this basically creates a 20 hour long clip, as oppossed to a one hour clip with 20 tracks, stacked one on top of the other.
As near as we can tell, there's no keyboard shortcut to make this happen. I VAGUELY recall being able to do this in FCP (maybe?) so I'll be stunned and more than just a little bit disappointed to if there isn't SOME way to pull this off in Premeire.
Does anybody have any idea if this mode of automatically dropping clips into the timeline as stacked tracks is possible? It will, quite literally, save him hours and hours of work if he can figure out the secret. And I won't feel quite so guilty for having turned him onto Premiere for this specific project!
And if anyone knows for a fact this is NOT possible, that would be great to know as well. At least we can put the notion to bed one way or another.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards, Michael

You can do this with the make multi-camera source sequence command in Premiere Pro CS6 (note that this was posted before CS6 was launched):
    Mark the clips
    Select the clips
Choose Clip > Create Multi-Camera Source Sequence
Choose the style of synchronization and click OK
Right click on Multi-Camera source sequence and choose > Open in Timeline.
Clips are now stacked up inside of a sequence

  • FCPX 10.0.6 - How to undo compound clip ?

    Hi there,
    I am on 10.0.6 now.
I have some clips stack on top of each other plus some music clips. Bcos it gets messy, I select them & turn them into a compound clip.
Now, I wanted the messy stacks back on the timeline as they originally were.
In 10.0.4, I just right-click & select "break clips apart" and it's done. But how do I that (undo the compund clip) in 10.0.6 ?
    Thanks

    Hi Tom,
Problem is when I right click on the compoud clip, there was no longer an option to break clips apart !
Where does Apple locate the function to break clips apart now in 10.0.6 ?
    Thanks

  • Synchronize Clips not working anymore

This seemed to be working a few months ago, but no more.
Recently I have been forwarding the files to the editor because I haven't been able to get my own FCPX to work (they use FCP 7). I have this new project that rather important but I need to get this working right.
I'm wondering if the main track file — 3+ hours — is too large.
What I have is about 20 clips from two different camera sources and a "main track" provided by a Zoom H4n of a conference with several speakers. I select all of the HD clips and audio files in list view then select "Synchronize Clips" or use keyboard command. What that produces is a compound clip with all the clips stacked on top of each other with a start point beween 00:00:00:00 and 00:15:32:17 instead of using the audio track for sync. What the timeline should look like is  for three levels with all of the clips in sequence along the main track.  What I have is 27 levels  with a similar start time.
I tried grabbing three clips with the main track and it almost worked with one of the clips preceding the clip it should have followed.
I looked around for answers but the suggestions of trashing the Preferences and reinstalling the application yielded the exact same results.
In July I had the same setup with a 1.5 hour main track and I got far superior results with a more difficult audio source.
    Using FCP 10.0.0.5 and OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)

    andynick,
Sorry that I took over a week to get back to you. I was doing some workarounds and tests amongst trying to get other projects completed. In any case, I'll be reporting this as a BUG to the overworked Apple developers. I came at this assumption from different angles and always got the similar result.
Your untested suggestion was a reasonable bases to test on even though it overlooks one important question:
If I can place all of the 27 files from two cameras and one audio track into the "New Multicam Clip" without modifying or breaking anything up in any way, why does it produce an "impeccable" Multicam Clip? One should be able to assume that the engine that produces the — properly synched — Multicam Clip is similar to the engine that is used when one wishes a compound clip from the "Synchronize Clips" command.
I think that rationale was sound, but, I tested your suggestion anyway to see if I could produce different results.
First I just tried to see if the  "Synchronize Clips" command would work with something else as designed.
I added another camera to the mix and made short clips along with a 20 minute main audio track to synch to. I threw these 20 clips at the  "Synchronize Clips" command and VIOLA, It produced a properly synched compound clip that displayed as four levels in the timeline. So, I was able to establish that it could work for some projects of significantly less duration.
I then cut the Main Track down to seven Half hour segments in Adobe Audition. Since I couldn't think of an elegant way to break up the three hour audio track into separate clips that would overlap by about 2.5 minutes. The FCPX workflow doesn't like to create separate files in the Timeline to place into the Events Browser as separate files — that could be synched (as far as I know).
I threw all of those files at the "Synchronize Clips" command. NFG. It stacked everything on top of each other with 7 levels for the audio tracks that should have been two levels. I noticed that I still had a 1.5 hour video clip from the B camera so I tried leaving that out of the synch matrix. This time it mostly failed, but with a slightly different result, the video still was stacked up in many levels instead of just two, but they were spread out a bit more along the first audio clip. A total failure for the video but, a different result. As for the audio, It had an incremental improvement; the second overlapped audio clip synched up at the correct spot on the first clip. However, the other five audio clips just arbitrarily assigned themselves along the first clip instead of stringing out into two levels. So there were one or two successes.
    Three out of thirty-four ain't bad…
I was overly optimistic that the new upgrade to 10.0.6 might be an improvement over this BUG but it wasn't. I did some testing before the upgrade, and more testing after.
    IT'S a BUG!!
    Sorry Bro,
    RAW

  • How to edit a clip in a multicam sequence (CS6)?

I am using Premiere CS6 on Mac, I have a multicam sequence set up (2 cam).
I just want to color correct cam 2 to match cam 1 and I cannot figure it out. Everything I try applies the correction to the entire sequence.
If someone can provide exact steps to apply color correction to one clip in the sequence only (it's just brightness/contract, nothing complicated), so that it's reflected in the multicam sequence I'd be grateful. Even a link to a tutorial would be good as I cannot seem to find it online (almost everything points to CC which I don't use and is totally different than CS6).
    Please help!

Ok, I finally figured it out, no thanks to Adobe's crap "Help" system, which is missing MANY steps...
    1. Right-click the Multi-Camera Source Sequence in the Project tab (NOT the multicam sequence you're editing). It's the one with the green/blue lines perfectly lined up.
    2. Choose Open in Timeline.
    3. In the Timeline, make the edits you want to the clip you want (in this case, Brightness/Contrast on clip 2)
    4. Go to Window > Multi-Camera Monitor
    5. You'll see your source clips stacked in the window, and you can fine tune from here.
    6. Click on the Multi-Camera Sequence you're editing in the Timeline, and the Monitor should update to reflect your changes.
You can toggle back and forth between these sequences in the timeline, adjusting as you need.
This was incredibly easy for me to document, I really fail to understand why the Help file couldn't be bothered. It's completely missing things like what the difference is between the source multicam sequence and the program multicam sequence, how to edit a clip in your multicam sequence, and how the multicam monitor works. Really pisspoor documentation, but at this point, I don't expect anything else from Adobe.

  • Trouble with my Multicam clip

I'm trying to synchornize my two camera shots using the multicam button.  All is well in making the clip; however, i notice then when the created multi cam clip is in the timeline it is displaying in a linear fasion with the second camera clips ahead of the first camera footage. In other words, nothing seems to be sychronized. Cameras footage is placed one after the other (not stacked)  If I double click on the clip nothing happens in showing the two clips (stacked) and they still remain all in one line. Very confusing.
    Could use some help!

I've got everything synched  but my latest problem is trying to make a DVD from my multicam clip. I'm noticing that the secondary footage is not joined to the primary clip. When I join the two clips on one line only one camera is presented and the other camera edited footage does not read or register.
I edited the multicam clip in the time line after double clicking from the clip board. I'm also noticing I cant work with titles very well with the two multicam clips in this mode and that when I try to make a copy and put it the two clips into a new project I get a notice that says the video properties of this clip are not recognized and when I click OK  the clips reverse themselves in the New Project time line when presenting themselves. I'm stuck in multicam clip mode and don't know how to get to the next step in which I can move on from the synchronization.
Sometimes I think it would be quicker to manually edit these clips.

  • Having trouble with audio clips in FCP

I have a project which involves using a number of short audio .wav clips stacked up with a video clip - lots of sounds to go with a SPFX-heavy project.
Problem is - I can hear a 'popping' noise at the start of the .wav clips. In some short portions of the project this is really annoying because you can hear 2-3 pops in rapid succession as one wav file comes in after another.
I've brought the files into Soundtrack Pro and there is no popping sound to clean up in the individual audio files.
It anyone else having a problem like this? Is it unavoidable?

Yes, it is a common problem with digital audio files. I believe it is known as DV Offset, or some such. You can search for POP and find many discussions here and on other FCP forums. We see the topic weekly at least. The most common solution is to place a 1 or 2 frame fade at the beginning of the clip.
This is not necessarily a problem with FCP, it's digital audio, that's just kinda how it is.
