FCSvr -handling of still image RAW files ?

Hello,
does anybody know if FCSvr supports RAW files like Canon .cr2 or Nikon .nef images - or does it at least read and archive the exif and iptc data in its database together with the location of the unattached RAW file ?
Sincerely Ullrich

Ullrich,
Make sure you are running FC Svr 1.1.1. It has some new metadata groups, one which is for EXIF info. The release notes are here:
http://www.apple.com/support/releasenotes/en/FinalCut_Server_1.0rn/
Add the PAGRP_CUST_PHOTO_INFOEXIF metadata group to the desired metadata sets, and then either reanalyse or upload new clips.
There might be additional XMP/IPTC fields that you want to map in. You can look at the metadata in the file itself by using 'Search Devices' and then double clicking on the desired file. Once you find the external metadata field that you want, you can map it to a custom field that you have created in FC Svr.
Also, regarding RAW support - FC Svr should be able to read any RAW file that the mac can open.

  • FCE 4 for slideshows with still images only

I recently put together a slideshow in FCE 4 from my still photographs. The show looks great when I run the original file. But the DVD I created looks awful. Is there a special way to size the still images for better quality. I sized them the way we do at camera club for our digital projector (1024 X 768, resolution 100).
    Thanks.
    Barb

Unfortunately, Tom, the slideshow capabilities in iPhoto are not sophisticated enough. I need to be able to "choreograph" the images with a musical selection. I like the marker features in FCE so I can easily time out the musical selection and place the transitions where I need them before I even import my images. I also like the ability to play with the audio, for example, trimming and fading out a piece of music that may be a tad long; or starting a selection of music after a title slide has been on the screen. I kind of need the type of editing one does with film but using still images. If only Apple would combine some of the features of Final Cut Express with a program like iPhoto that handles the still image resolution. Any possibility of that happening?

  • Can't open raw files in 32 bit CS4

Am using Vista 64 bit OS and because I recently purchased Nik Software's Complete Ed was necessary to change from initial set up of PS CS4 64 bit to 32 for their usage compatability. Had Camera Raw 5.0 on 64 bit version, copied camera raw 8bi plug in file format and placed in correct file format folder for the 32 bit version of PS. ...sounds easy enough...but when I attempt to open a raw file in PS or bridge it will not open and get message - Could not complete your request because of a program error.  Camera raw does show up and only once under the About Plug In submenu. Have tried Purge Cache option. Can still open raw files as always in 64 bit version, save and reopen 32bit version to continue but hoping for solution to eleminate that hassle. Thanks for your needed advice!

Plugin's have to be rewritten for a 64-bit environment so copying the 64-bit ACR to the 32-bit folder won't work.  You need the 32-bit version of ACR in the 32-bit CS4 folder.
I'm not sure if the ACR 5.6 updater will work to update both versions, or if you need to download and install the plugin's manually.
You can get to the manual install ZIP by following the PSE link near the top of the regular ACR 5.6 page linked on the updates page:

  • Shaky still images

I have imported still images, jpeg files and they are shaky. I am having problems with them being shaky when I make some keyframe movements, mostly zooming in. I saw on the discussion it was suggested to reduce the size of the jpeg file which I did to 2048 x 1536. That seemed to work until I went further into my project adding more clips and still images to it. Suddenly, those still images added much earlier and working fine are now shaky. I tried the flicker filter setting it to max, and the image stablizer filter. Did not work. I saw someone said to check that the field dominance is set to none which they are. Also someone suggested adding gaussian blur filter. That made it not shaky but the quality of the photo is horrible, blurred as the effect suggests. Anyone have any suggestions?
      Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Gaussian blur is the way to go, but you are in control of what it does. You can get great results with a little time spent. Remove interlace and flicker filter to do this.
Before you go to blur, check your levels. If your whites are peaking out of "legal" range you have a different problem and the blur won't completely take care of the jitters. Now for the blur:
    - Use it vertically only. There's no need to add blur to the horizontal because that's not where the problem is. What you're doing is trying to mix just enough of adjacent video lines together so their contrast doesn't cause flickering.
    - Use it extremely lightly. If your pictures were at sequence resolution you would probably want it set between .1 and .3 - in your case it's more but you don't say what your sequence rez is.
    - Set it so the blur is gone, then back off untill you see a little bit of jitter. A small amount is often unnoticeable, and if you're right at the edge you're maintaining maximum resolution in the image.

Either use 'SYLKPIX Developer Studio SE' to develope the RAW files and to save them in another lossless format like TIFF, or try if Adobe's free DNG Coverter can convert your Lumix RAW files to dng. Then import the dngs. This way, your files will still be RAW files.  This works (most times) for my Lumix FZ28.

  • Aperture library can't link the RAW files.

I am pretty much pulling my hair out on this. I setup Aperture so all files are collected and held into the APlibrary files.
My Aperture library also resigned on an external drive. One day I realized that I needed to reformat the drive so I copied the Aperture Library off onto another drive. When I went to choose the new Library which was the backup, all raw files couldn't be found. At first it was unrecognized file error, and now it just shows the jpg.
I ran Aperture holding the keycombos to fix permissions, and do a rebuild of the Library. What that did was make it so I wouldn't get an error but it replaced everything with the JPGs and no raw files to be found.
Next I renamed the aplibrary file to .foo I opened it up as a directory and then started to rename the project folders so I could open those. All of the NEF (RAW) files are there intact which is great, but I need to connect everything so I still have the Raw files with all color adjustments.
If anyone can point me in the right direction, that would be great. I don't know what else I can do.
    Thanks!

  • LR4 auto adjusting and messing up my RAW files since latest update? How do I turn this off?

    HELP!
This latest LR4 update has somehow turned my RAW files into these wretched looking too bright, too yellow/orange, messes.  I DO NOT have it set to auto import with any presets. I am not able to "reset" back to the usual dull, blah, flat looking RAW files I used to see in my LR4.
I also know for a fact that this is NOT how I took the images so the setting it's being imported with are not how I took the images.  I know this because I've been shooting RAW-Jpeg since I noticed this and couldn't find where to turn this setting off, and my JPEGS look NOTHING like what this is importing them as.
It's importing them all, regardless of session as I've imported 10 different sessions lately, and ALL of them somehow change over from the dull images RAW files typically look like when I click on them to enlarge them to have Temp 5500, Tint, -11, Exp +70, Contrast +5, highlights -9, Shadows +9, Whites -98,  Blacks -2, Clarity +19, Vib +10, Sat +19, and Orange +6 with Sharpening 81 and Noise Reduc at 4.
What's going on??? How do I reset them back to the original RAW settings and stop LR from importing every.single.session with the settings above? I have no Presets with these settings either!

Thank you to a fellow photog who answered my question via Facebook!  Apparently one of my assistants mistakenly made adjustments in the Libray tab to the "Saved Prest" which saved her settings as "Custom" as well as saved the Whitebalance change she made there and the Tone Control section.  I hit the "reset all" button under Tone Control and all is right with the world again! WHEW!

  • Edit one still image in PS and entire timeline needs re-rendering in FCP6

I've been using FCE 3.5 and FCP5 for quite some time. My projects usually have a large number of still image pct files in them. Before changingg to FCP6 (because I'm working on a 1080p project) when i would need to edit a still image that was already in my time;line, I would open it in Photoshop, make the changes, save it, and when I returned to FCP 5 or FCE3.5, only that portion of the timeline where the item appears would need to be re-rendered. But with FCP6, even if the edited image is only in aa small part of the timeline, the entire timeline is red and needs to be re-rendered. Any idea what is causing this major problem? I never change the dimensions of the file or the type. I might just adjust brightnesss ro do some in-painting, etc.

Cick anywhere in your timeline. Type Command + 0 {zero} to see your sequence settings. Either report those settings or post a screen shot here.

  • Still Images suddenly have Media Offline icon

Asking this on behalf of a friend who just encountered it and is with a client at the moment...
In his timeline, everything was working fine, cutting in some footage, throw in a still image section, add more footage, all good. He then went back to review his timeline and a section of his timeline had the red "Media Offline" icon on all the footage involved. This section consists of about 15 still images (JPG files) around 10 seconds in length. Oddly enough, when he brought the playhead over this section, it still played fine, as in the proper still image was showing on screen. Even if he made modifications, he was able to render and again, the still images would play the way he intended. We tried making FCP take the footage offline, and then doing a reconnect: still had the offline icon. We restarted, still had the offline icon. All the items in his browser have the "picture" icon rather than the "offline" icon (box with red strike). We dragged the physical JPG file from Finder into the Browser window, and then placed it on the timeline: still had Offline icon.
Normally not a 'huge' issue, only a cosmetic one. Except that it's happening right in front of a big client who's always worked with Avids before. Ideally we'd like her Final Cut experience to be a wonderful one and I can tell that this cosmetic error isn't convicing her to switch. Anybody have any idea what's going on?
To sum it up: The pictures are all behaving normally, can be modified, animated, etc... The ONLY issue is that in the timeline, they have the "media offline" icon rather than a picture of it's first frame.

Don't worry its just the thumbnail that's offline. Its not even really necessary to fix but if he really needs to he can just shut down FCP. Go to wherever he has his scratch disc set up. (You know where you tell FCP to save renders, auto saves, and so forth). Just drop the folder named Thumbnail Cache into the trash. The next time you open your project it will automatically create a new folder and files and you should be good to go.

  • Morphing a still image to video effect

I have shot footage of my wife holding a white a4 card while talking to camera
I have zoomed in on the card to fill the screen as she finishes her talk, I want the card to have a still photo on it (created in FCP as a freeze frame), then as we zoom and then hold for 1 second the still frame changes to video of the same still, seen this effect in the TV series "Criminal Minds", im sure they use a tracking piece of software to do this, but is this acheiveable in FCP or even Motion to look realistic? I shot the card straight on, would prefer to do it at an angle plane but this may be even more difficult!
    Any suggestions?

    Hey Allister
I can't see why you would need any motion capture software - what I understand your trying to do from your post, should be perfectly achievable using just the motion keyframes in FCP. This would be how i would try and do the effect your describing -
    1. Find the frame that wished to use as the mock photo on the piece of card. Create a freeze frame and export it as a still image PNG file. If your working in an interlaced format, then take it into photoshop and use the deinterlace filter on the footage to get rid off any jagged edged that should be smooth.
    Filter > Video > De-Interlace
    And resave it.
    2. Import this photo image into the same sequence as your wife holding the piece of card. Drag this image onto the timeline above the clip of your wife holding the card. Now resize the image using the motion controls to fit the piece of card. Add a keyframe here to your "size" value and your "center" value, and any other value you have adjusted to make the still fit the card.
    3. Now navigate to the frame of the zoom, in the clip of your wife holding the card where the card fills the screen. Adjust your still PNG photo image to fill the screen also - you should be able to do this easily by just setting all the motion values to their default setting e.g size 100%, center 0,0.
    4. Now go back to through the footage zooming in on your wife. Play it through - and each time you see a frame where the photo image is in the incorrect position i.e not fitting the card, then simply adjust it so that it fits.
Hopefully a combination of the final cut tweening and a little perseverence on your part should get the photo to keep in position all the way through the camera zoom.
    5. Now at the frame where the photo image fills the frame - cut to the actual moving footage from which you took the still. Make sure you cut to 1 frame AFTER where you took the freeze frame. Otherwise there will be an unnatural pause as you will be essentially playing the same frame twice.
Now you could also use the speed ramping tools in FCP to come up from a still image to slow motion to full speed video if you want a smoother transition than just going from a still to moving footage.
Hope this was of some help. Knowing me its probably clear as mud. If you want any clarification on any points just post back here.
    All the best

  • Treat JPEG files next to raw files as seperate files still imports and displays them as seperate images

Hi, I am taking RAW + JPEG files on a Nikon D810. The RAW files are saving to a CF (primary slot) and JPEGs to an Eye-Fi card (secondry slot). When I am importing into Lightroom 5 directly from the camera, even though I have 'Treat JPEG files next to raw files as seperate files' UNchecked in preferences, it still imports and displays them as seperate images. I am trying to import the JPEG as a sidecar file only to the RAW file as I have read about but this is not happening, any ideas why? Thanks

Well in Lightroom they are apart from each other before the actual import, all the JPGs list first then all the NEF files next. The same actual photo as the NEF or as the JPEG both have the same file name apart from the .JPG or .NEF so that is not the problem. The NEFs go to the CF card and the JPGs go to the EyeFi SD card, I think you are onto the issue but I'm not sure what I need to do to fix it. I guess I need to change a setting on the D810 itself. There really doesn't seem to be any other settings apart from the RAW + JPEG vs only one or the other and allocating which card is primary for the RAWs and which card is secondry for the JPEGs. I really need the JPEGs to go to the EyeFi SD (secondary) for live iPad image viewing and not to the same primary card (CF) as the NEFs (RAWs) go. This does seem to be a typical setup so I would think it has been encountered before.
Thanks for your help any other advise is appreciated.

  • How do I get CS5 Bridge/Photoshp to handle RAW files from my D800E?

How do I get CS5 Bridge/Photoshop to handle RAW files from my D~800E?

There are many who would say, based only on empiric data (boo) and not opinion (yay), that the most accurate raw conversions would be obtained using the Nikon software and not secondary processors like the Adobe converter. The DNG process makes irreversible changes to the raw data which may or may not matter but the DNG is not the same as the original raw file.
You can do the experiment yourself, for FREE, and compare different methods of raw conversion. You may be surprised at what you see. You have to be because different converters tune to different image characteristics. Don't be taken in about claims Adobe makes for its convertor without proving them to yourself. Adobe has made deliberate pre-set choices for its converter and they may not be the best for you. Or they may be, as we have all become so used to what Adobe chooses we think we chose it ourselves.
If I were able to afford, and had the energy to lug around a D800e, I might not want to compromise the image quality I just shelled out such massive bucks to obtain using the Adobe converter without proving that was the best option for me, but I don't do it for a living. Also, if you can shell out for a D800e and are enamored of the Adobe Converter realize it only costs $10/month for a CC subscription, possibly tax deductible, and you can still retain your older version of PS. The CC version of PS allows use of the ACR as a filter layer, if you are fond of the converter tools (which are much improved in the latest version).

  • Why is the new iOS 8 photo app slow handling photo raw files

I Have been importing my photos to ipad using the camera kit since the first iPad was released.
Originally I only imported JPEG, however as my photographic interest grew I switched to photo raw.
I have since being importing and edit pentax PEF photo raw files through the various versions of iOS, however since this new version the experience of editing and viewing my photos is slow, and unpleasant.
Choose a photo to view, and a blurry picture appears, and a second or 3 and the blurry images clears and I can view my photo, now swipe left to the next picture and the photos move as they should then stick half of the first picture is shown and half of the second, wait 2 / 3 seconds and the second picture is revealed, blurry, and wait another second or to and it clears. It carries on in this fashion, and it turns a pleasant experience, into a frustrating one.
on previous versions of iOS there would be a small pause as images loaded, but it was always smooth to move from picture to picture.
i Have tried switching to RAW+ hoping that only the attached JPEG would be imported. This did not appear to work with the whole image being imported.
please anyone how can I get back to the iOS photo app that worked better with raw photo files?

Briansyddal - you might be able to manage your phone without a PC, but many of us can't, especially those of us with large iTunes libraries.  How do you propose I manage my 250GB of music using only a phone?  Maybe I could go out and buy 10 iPhones and spread my library out among them!
Catz537 - I have the same problem as you and I've spent hours on the web trying to find a solution to it.  It was a problem with iOS 7 and  8.1.1 doesn't fix it.  The the only advice from Apple is completely useless because it requires you, effectively, to delete and recreate your iTunes library and lose all your metadata, album art, notes etc and there's also no guarantee it will work.   I wish I could be more help (even more - I wish Apple could be more help) - I updated to 8.1.1 at 1400 today.  At 2200 I'm still "waiting for changes to be applied" for a measly 16GB of music transfer.

  • 5D Mark II raw files image quality

Anyone out there using Aperture to convert their 5D2 raw files? I am trying to but I am having image quality problems. This is a surprise coming from Aperture, which for Sony raw files has produced stunning quality for me in the past. It leads me to believe that perhaps Aperture's 5D2 conversion setup needs work. Here is what I am seeing that I don't see from RAW Developer or Canon's Digital Photo Pro:
    • Rainbow banding in specular highlights
    • Webbing of tree branches, particularly against the sky.
    • Not much "pixel level" contrast.
    • Rather soft over all (I have good L lenses, tripod, and technique)
    • Lackluster color requiring considerable post conversion work.
    • The files tend to be rather fragile with tearing occurring easily if several rounds of sharpening need to be applied.
    • More noise than one would expect, even at ISO 200.
    • Highlights into quarter tones have a slick, almost smeared look (no NR applied in camera or Aperture).
Also, I really need to convert to 2x the native file size but I am limited by Aperture's current maximum size. So converting to 1.5x might be causing some of what I am seeing due to rounding errors, etc.
Can anyone (with direct experience) comment?
    Thanks in advance.

Hi & thanks for your comments. I interpolated 8 images up (for store posters) to 1600mm x 200dpi and still got better results from CPP V Aperture - in SRGB. "Better" is subjective in this case. I will experiment further.
Yes I understand the principal behind having a flat - hence max detail raw. My first DSLR was a Kodak D200 13 Years ago - it's raws were flat & magenta - as were many cameras Raws in between time (such as the Fuji Fine Pix s2Pro) - the same principal applied to B & W film long slow dev time produced lower contrast neg = more range to work with.
To me the flat raws are a bit of step backward? The issue is - fast - workflow.
I found the Nikon D200 & 5D Mk 1 raws through aperture required very little work (if any) to get them ready for next stage of production. I just want to get images as "ready" as the 5D Mk I from my MkII - which is not the case at the moment.
Any idea how to carry the 5DII preset over & onto the raws in Aperture? That might help speed things up?
    Cheers ADR

You need camera raw 8.4 for your camera, if it’s Digital Rebel T5 EOS 1200D EOS Kiss X70. It is not compatible with PSE11; so it’s a bit odd if that software was bundled with the camera except that it will work with jpegs. I suggest you download and install the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your CR2 files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the DNG files will editable in PSE11(keep your originals as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)
Mac download (.dmg file) click here DNG Converter 8.4
You can convert a whole folder of raw images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:
