Because you're opening a RAW file instead of an adjusted Aperture photograph.
What is your workflow?
How are you exporting them? Are you exporting a Master or Version?

Aperture and Bridge interface

I cannot access photos in the Aperture library from Bridge. When I click on the Aperture cube icon (Aperture Library.aplibrary") from Bridge, Aperture opens and nothing more. Is this usual? Or do I need to do something to get Bridge to recognize all the files/albums, etc which were originally imported into Aperture? I can access all the Aperture files from Photoshop but sometimes I just want to view them in Bridge first.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
No, there is no way to access the files from Bridge. Bridge and Aperture don't play well together (nor does it play well with iPhoto) because Bridge attempts to do part of Apertures job.

Aperture and Bridge

I have avoided using Bridge (much to my annoyance) as I cannot access the folders within my Aperture library (which are in the Pictures folder).
Can someone take pity on this photographer here, whose workflow has become rather cumbersome of late.....

Easy solution; don't import files into Aperture. Use referenced files so 1) your Aperture library isn't huge and 2) you won't lose files if or when Aperature totally crashes/blows up.
With my images securely located on their HDDs I can work with them and make corrections in CS5 Photoshop as well as work with them in Aperture. The Aperture libraries are backed up twice (on separate drives) and Bridge/Camera Raw corrections and metadata are backed up with both xmp files and a cache download into the files' folders. The HHDs are also backed up
It works great and gives me complete freedom to use or not use A3 and CS5 at will.

How did you install the plugin? You may want to try reinstalling it or installing the dng converter, as that is what has the camera formats. ACR 8.2 is just the plugin for the mechanics of Camera raw. Normally they should both install, but sometime the converter doesn't.

Problems with Viewing Canon EOS Rebel t1i Raw Files in Adobe PS and Bridge CS 4

You prolly need to update the installed Camera Raw plug-in...See the Camera Raw product page for more info on downloading and installing an update.

Difference in file size in photoshop and bridge

when I save an image in photoshop (file size 26mb) it shows as a 70.7 mb in bridge or window explorer. Why?

Any way 3264x4896 is canvas size. Has nothing to to with file size.
Photoshop also supports layers and layers can be canvas size or larger then canvas size as well as smaller then canvas.
Additionally layers can contain embedded object and object could contain a layer file like a placed PSD image.
The center section Document Size is the documents Print here you see the document currentle has a 240DPI resolution
3264pixel width / 240 dpi = 13.6"
4896pixel height / 240 dpi = 20.4"
The bottom section is the control section. With resample NOT checked the top can not be changed Pixel Dimensions will not be changed nor would File size. And all three values in print size are linked. You change one value and Photoshop will chage the other two for you. With resample NOT checked the other controls are not settable. Pixel Dimensions are not change so no interpolation and no aspect ratio change.
With Resample checked Constrain Proportions will link width and height to preserv the current aspect ratio and not distort the image.
When you save a document file format is very important layered flat compression all play a roll. It very hard to even guess what the file size will be.

Picture file handling between Aperture and Photoshop

I have transferred several photos via "edit in external editor" from aperture to photoshop.
In photoshop I made different operations:
a) just looking (no special manipulations) -> no saving
b) manipulations on a particular photo -> saving via "save" in PS
c) combination of different photos -> saving via "save as" in PS
Meanwhile I have learned, that option C just saves the file in the file system, but does not update the database entry in aperture. I have also found different versions of photos in the file system, which I had just opened in PS (case a). "File system" means in that case, that they are under the folder "masters", when I drill down the Aperture Data File. Case b seems to work OK.
I have now different questions:
why are photos, which I have just opened in PS, still in the file system (even when I have deleted them) in Aperture? Seems that those versions are kept. Is'nt that blowing up my database? (case a)
when I reimport pictures from case c, are they stored a second time in aperture or does the aperture database point to the particular file (because the file already is under the folder "masters")
Any feedback to data handling between PS and Aperture?

IMO today you are very likely to be best served by the inexpensive Photoshop Elements. However, Adobe's world is changing at the end of this month (March 27) with official announcement of MacIntel versions. You may want to re-ask this question then, being careful of April Fool's Day wags.

10 D2X nefs, equal settings(including sharpening) on each file.
Test: Time the export/saving 10 full sized JPGs(level 10) on both systems under both Aperture and Bridge/ACR
In Aperture, stamp the same settings to 10 nefs, wait for the changes to appear on each thumbnail, then select the 10 nefs, and select export versions.
In Bridge, paste the camera raw settings to the 10 nefs, wait for the thumbnails to show changes(building cache), select the 10 nefs, open ACR under Bridge(not CS2) by pressing CMD-R, in the ACR dialog, select all images on the left, click "Save 10 images".

As you can see Aperture requires 2x the time to export/save when compared to Bridge/ACR.
Further, it is amazing that the Powerbook could plow through the images in Bridge in the same time it took the Powermac to export the Aperture images...
Hmmm, then that would imply the best money is on a Powerbook running Bridge/ACR/CS2?
Sooooo, if you can cull/sort the images and apply raw settings in Aperture three to four times as fast as in Bridge then it is a wash...

Yesterday my computer started up beeping - I took the harddisk out and it started normally (initramfs tho). Then I put it back in and the laptop have been running fine so far. I suspect it might just have been a bad connection, but I am giving it time..

Aperture and media browser

I just installed iLife and started to play with the apps, one thing I noticed was the I couldn't see the pictures that I have stored in Aperture. I can see albums, projects and smart albums but when I click on an album no pictures are displayed.
The pictures are in RAW so I tried rebuilding the previews but I still can't see any pictures. Any suggestions?

I'm new to Aperture. I have Aperture referencing my photos on an external hard drive. It seems that if I make any adjustments then these are not shown in the Media Browser in iWeb. I have already closed and reopened iWeb and still these files are not visible. If I remove the adjustments in Aperture and then try opening iWeb again these files are still not visible.
What's going on?

How to get Aperture and iPhoto to use Pentax *ist DL RAW images natively

Using some techniques that I found in various places in these forums, I am going to give step-by-step instructions to get Aperture and iPhoto to recognize Pentax *ist DL RAW images natively.
Note: This worked for me using 10.4.6 with the latest iPhoto 06 and Aperture updates. I do NOT know if this will work on older versions of OS X, iPhoto, or Aperture.
Note: If you also use a Pentax *ist DS camera, these instructions will probably disable support for that particular device due to the modifications made to a system file. Only complete these instructions if you want to use a *ist DL camera.
** These instructions involve modifying system level files using a HEX editor. If you are not comfortable with this, do NOT attempt to do this or you could kill your system. Remember, BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP. These steps worked great for me but follow at your own risk!! **
Ok, lets begin...
1) Download this great patch by macintosh_tech

This patch contains an updated raw.plist file which includes the RAW information for the *ist DL. This patch also contains an updated libRaw.dylib file and an updated Raw Presets file for Aperture.
** Do NOT copy the libRaw.dylib file from this patch to the folder listed in the patch Read_Me. This file did not work on my Intel-based Mac and crashed my system!!
I was able to modify my original libRaw.dylib file using a HEX editor to get it to work on my system. Instructions for this modification will follow.
2) Open the .dmg of the patch in a Finder window
3) Open a new finder window and browse to /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/ImageIO.fra mework/Resources
*4) Backup the libRaw.dylib and Raw.plist files. Copy them to a safe location. For extra safety, you can just copy the whole Resources folder to a safe location (Make sure that you COPY it and dont MOVE it)*
5) Right-click the libRaw.dylib file and select "Get Info". Look at the bottom of the info window and expand the "Ownership & Permissions" tab. In this section, expand the "Details" tab. If the lock icon is in the locked position, click it to unlock it. Change "Owner" to your user name. If requested, enter your system password at this point. Close the info window. This step lets you modify the libRaw.dylib file.
6) Complete step 5 for the Raw.plist file.
7) Copy the Raw.plist file from the "Place In System Folder" folder from the patch to the Resources folder. It will ask you if you wnt to overwrite the existing file. Click "Replace".
8) Open a new finder window and browse to the /Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/Application Support/Aperture/ folder.
* 9) Backup the "Raw Decode Presets.plist" file *
10) Copy the "Raw Decode Presets.plist" file from the "Place In Home Directory" folder from the patch to the /Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/Application Support/Aperture/ folder. Click "replace" if it asks you.
11) Here's the tricky part. Download a HEX editor if you don't have one. I used 0xED. It is free and can be downloaded from

12) Open the libRaw.dylib file from the Resources folder in your HEX editor.
Note: This is your original libRaw.dylib file from your /System/Library/...../Resources/ folder, NOT the file from the patch.
Use the Find function and search for the string "Pentax *ist DS". Make sure you are using "Search Type: Text" (or equivilent in your editor) and that you use proper case. When you find this string, change the "S" in the "DS" to an "L". The string should now look like "Pentax *ist DL". Use the "Find Next" function to find the next instance of "Pentax *ist DS". Again, change the "S" to an "L". There should be two total instances that you need to change. Save the file and exit the editor.
13) Open Disk Utility and repair permissions. This will set the raw.plist and libRaw.dylib files back to their original permissions.
14) Reboot the system.
15) You should now be able to view .PEF files natively in Aperture and iPhoto. I appologize in advance for any typos. Let me know how this works, as this is my first tutorial of this nature.

It would appear that my last post was a moot point as the 10.4.7 update adds support for the *ist DL. It's nice to have it biult into the operating system now.

How do I transfer photos from Aperture and iPhoto to Adobe Bridge. I am using Photoshop CS6. Many of my original photos were stored as raw files.

Here's how to access Mac iPhoto images for use in Photoshop
and so that they may be viewed by choosing that folder in Bridge..
1. In the Finder, navigate to Users > [user name} > Pictures > iPhoto Library.
2. Control-click (Right-click) the iPhoto Library file and choose Show Package Contents.
3. A Finder window opens that shows the contents. The Masters folder (or called Originals folder) contains all of the photographs that are in iPhoto.
Photoshop cannot access this folder, but if you make a duplicate of the folder, the dupe will be accessible -- so:
4. Control-click (Right-click) the folder named Masters (or Originals) and choose Duplicate.
5, Drag the duplicate folder which is named "Masters copy" or “Originals copy” from the iPhoto Library Finder window to the Desktop.
6. Open images in Photoshop from file on desktop or view them in Bridge.
7 Rename the folder and move it elsewhere (probably to the Pictures folder), if desired.

Photo file issues with iWeb and Aperture....also too much duplicating!!

A little background, before I get into my iWeb issue.....
Years ago I tried iPhoto, but I didn't like how it duplicated all my photo files and I wasn't very fond of the file structure it created. Years later (last month) I got Aperture. Aperture (still has a long way to go) also duplicates all your files and places them in their own file structure. If I can get along with Aperture (and if it will get along with my other programs), I won't mind putting all my files into the file structure it creates. But for now, I still have my original files in the original file structure I have had for many years as a back up.
On to my issue with iWeb and Aperture....
To add photos to iWeb, you can either go into the iWeb media center or you can drag and drop photos from other locations.
1st: iWeb media center
To get my photos into the media center, I would have to load them into iPhoto (iP 6 does allow you to keep your original file structure, but it still creates .jpg files, which fills up your hard-drive. More duplicates I don't need or want). So that is out for me. iP6 will let you view and use your Raw files.
Another way is to drag and drop your file structure directly into the media center window. I don't think this duplicates any files (at least I haven't been able to find any), but it takes an awfully long time to thumbnail all your photos (several hours and still waiting for 22K + files). Also, it won't show any Raw files. Again, out for me.
Aperture won't let you drag and drop its library into the media center at all. So if I was to move all my files into the Aperture Library, I wouldn't be able to access them for iWeb at all.....Out for me.
2nd: Drag and Drop
I was able to drag and drop Raw files directly into iWeb from C1 Pro, Adobe Bridge and Adobe Lightroom.
As I said before, I am trying to move over to Aperture. However, Aperture won't let me drag and drop photos. What is the deal here??? These are both Apple programs and they won't play nice with each other. Very annoying.
Anyway, I put a link below to my iWeb test webpage I made. All the photos were Raw files that I did a drag and drop from C1 Pro, Adobe Bridge and Lightroom. There were no problems with the publishing.

Perhaps you are right.
I am not a web developer and I will never be. I don't feel like spending countless hours learning how to use Dreamweaver or some other Pro web app. iWeb looked like a way to start making websites of my photos for my friends and family (much easier and better than Home Page on .Mac). All I was asking was for a way to drag and drop my photos (especially Raw files) with Aperture. Which I can do with Lightroom, Adobe Bridge and C1 Pro, and without using iPhoto.
I am not a Pro photographer either, but I purchased Aperture based on what was advertised on the Apple website. From that ad, Aperture fit my photo needs almost to a tee. I am looking to adjust Raw files, Crop, Archive and keep my use of Hard Disk space down to a minimum. I can use Photoshop for the other 5% of things I do. However, Aperture has some issues (if you own it, then you already know. If you don't, you can read the Aperture Forum) This is one of the reasons I never went to iPhoto for archiving. I didn't like the way it duplicated all my files, taking up more disk space and its file structure. So even though Aperture won't play nice with other programs, I was surprised that it wouldn't play nice with any Apple programs.
After reading your post and based on what you are saying, everyone either needs to have/learn/use Pro apps only or have/learn/use iApps only. Don't Cross the Streams!!
I guess that means Apple will need to fix DVD Studio Pro. It uses photos that are in your iPhoto library and music from iTunes (iApps in a Pro app??....for shame...."it was never intended"). Also, DVD SP won't read the Aperture library. Does that mean there are 3 platforms? Pro, iApp and Mediocre??
Now I have 2 questions:
1. Can someone please tell me which apps are Pro and iApp, or if there is Mediocre? I don't want to mix them up and "Cross the Streams".
2. Again....is there anyway to use Aperture with iWeb?

Aperture Metadata and Bridge Metadata

I am a photographer and my workflow is to import all my images into Aperture library and add metadata.
When exporting an image is it possible to integrate Apertures metadata with Bridge metadata? This is important feature as most people do not import images with Aperture. The issue is that many of the field names are different or non existent between the two programs. For example Location field in Bridge is Sub location in Aperture.
Can you add fields such contact info such as URL, email that are included within Bridge ITPC Metadata?
Is there a way to customize the metadata fields to work with CS3?

Unfortunatelly, not really.
I am currently using Nikon Transfer (latest version) to download the pictures from the camera. This software allows me to enter quite a number of IPTC data (including contact information, url, mail, phone, etc.), but maybe not all which are available in CS3.
Then I do import the pictures from the folder into Aperture where I only add contact information in the respective IPTC field. From the tests, I did I do know, that with this step I am using the "old IPTC standard" with Aperture and the new IPTC standard with Nikon Transfer. Clearly the newer is better and meets the needs you described.
In Aperture, I do only see the IPTC data fields, which are common between the two standards (copyright, keywords and description).
When I go to CS3 Bridge, I can see the IPTC data from both, but only of you turn on the "IPTC old" in the Photoshop Bridge settings.
This is how far I have come. I have tested the export with the original and the aperture work copy. As a test reader/viewer of the pics I used Photoshop Elements 5.0 ... but except the copyright information, key words and description, I could not find "my" IPTC data. So there was no contact info. This may be a problem of the old version, so I also checked on a windows PC the file properties (picture viewer), which has more or less the same information.
So the only work around maybe to add contact information into the copyright field - which is not ideal.

Aperture and storing files on external

I've been using Aperture for a few months and I would like to take some of my Projects and move them to external storage. I've been googling this and have seen several different options from creating new libraries on the external storage to relocating masters. I've got a few questions. Basically, I'm just wanting to not put so much of a hard drive burden on my laptop and really only need some of the projects with me, but I'm not sure that I want all of my masters on an external device. What is the Apple suggested way of handling this, I'm just wanting to get this set up in the easiest to maintain and most reliable.

Hi hallm74 -- welcome to the user-to-user Aperture forum. Lots and lots of good stuff here -- be sure to search the forum.
There is a conceptual hurdle to what you want to do, but in practice it is easy to do and easy to maintain. Aperture contains direct, useful, and bug-free tools for moving and linking to your Masters.
It is vital that you understand the difference between a Managed Master and a Referenced Master:
+ [If the original image file|http://discussions.apple.com/messageview.jspa?messageID=13124533&stqc=true] is contained within your Library, it is called a *Managed Master* (Aperture's pointer to this file, and the file itself, are both inside the Library). If the original image file is not contained within your Library, it is called a *Referenced Master* (the pointer in your Aperture Library points to a file outside your Aperture Library). +

The Aperture Users Manual recommends moving older or not-regularly-adjusted Masters to an external drive in order to free up space on your system drive. Simply select the images whose Masters you wish to relocate, and run the command "File→Relocate Masters".
To select all the files in multiple Project, {Command}+click each Projects name in the Library tab of the Inspector to open them all in one Browser, then "Select All".
You will need to specify a folder system for your Masters as they are moved to your external drive. Select one which makes sense to you. +Do not worry about matching Finder folders to your Aperture LIbrary Folders or Projects.+ You are using Aperture to manage your images -- you don't need to duplicate this (and in many cases cannot) in Finder. If none of the options make sense to you, use "Y/M/D" folders. I suggest creating a top-level folder on your external drive, "Aperture Master Files".
You can easily change any Master or set of Masters from Referenced to Managed and back.
The biggest difference between the two is that you cannot make adjustments to or export an image when its Master is off-line. But you can do all other administrative tasks: rank images, label images, keyword images, etc.
You must back-up your Referenced Masters yourself. They are not included in the Aperture Vault (which you may not be using).
If you haven't yet, set your Previews to the dimensions of the largest monitor you use (connected monitors show up in the list with an asterisk).

What on earth is happening? I am on PS CS6. I might point out everything was working normally up to yesterday, when this first started.
I recently changed computer to 64bit from 32bit, not sure if this causing the problem or not. Any help would be appreciated.
