File Error: The specified file is locked

Anyone ever seen this error message when trying to save a project?
I'm working in FCP 6.0.2, on a MacPro running OS 10.5.1, and I cannot save any projects. Not old ones, not Saved-as, not even new, blank, untitled ones.
I repaired permissions, trashed preferences, checked the designated folders for locked status... I can't figure it out. And, needless to say, I can't work if I can't save... help!

Well, this isn't going to help anyone with the same problem, but it seemed to fix itself. I was on the phone with Apple Pro Video support, and I went to do a save in order to retrieve the exact terminology that I was getting on the error, and the dang thing went ahead and saved with no problems.
Oy.

Before I ask you to check permissions on the drive you save your material and output files, try creating a new project, copy everything from the old one in it (highlight-copy-paste in new project) and save as with a new name. Does this work?

Paste the text that Neil posted,
    *tell application "Finder"*
*set locked of every item of entire contents of home to false*
    *end tell*
into the white area under the Record and Run buttons. Then click Compile, then the Run button.

file error - the specified file is locked, Final cut pro

I usually get this when I try to save a project and it isn't stored on my HD(usually external HD or RAID). Sometimes I can do a save as and save it to the desktop.
Sometimes everything is cleared up with a restart. It seems like it is a FCP7/OS developmental need which is mute because 7 is no longer supported by Apple.

  • File Error: The Specified file is open and in use by this or another app...

I have imported a string of pictures and dragged them into the FCP timeline. I render them and it renders a certain percentage then it stops and says "File Error: The Specified file is open and in use by this or another application."
After reading this, I quit out of FCP, restarted my computer, opened FCP, nothing other program, tried to render again and same thing happened. It renders part of it then the error message pops up, then I can render again and it will do another percent then it will pop again and so on.
Suggestions, or does anyone know why this happened? Thank you very much for your time.

okay - don't know where you've got your scratch disc set but hopefully it's to another drive other than your boot.
The same drive where your render files should be located, ie some drive other than your boot drive.
Can you copy the jpegs over to that drive into a folder.
Delete them from your tl, delete them from your proj. Save your project. Close fcp.
If they're on your boot drive - delete them.
Reopen fcp and Reimport them from the new location.
Sorry for all the steps - but we have no idea how you have configured fcp or your level of experience. Trying to cover all the bases ...

  • FILE ERROR: The Specified file is open and in use...

FILE ERROR: The Specified file is open and in use by this or another application.
I get this error when I import a .MOV created by Live Type. All applications, except FCP, are closed. I can reboot the computer and get the same thing. It happens when I try and "render all". Thanks.

It's probably either spotlight looking at the files, or some anti-virus program thinking your render is a virus.

  • File error: the specific file is locked

I got the error 'File error: the specific file is locked', when trying to render a project in FCP 7. The rushes and scratch disk are on an external hard-drive. I then went on to finder and I am unable to put anything new onto this external hard-drive. I am now trying to back up everything off the hard-drive and will go to disk utility and try repair it and I have saved the FCP project elsewhere.
However there is a lot of footage to back up (probably should have done this already), does anyone know of a quick work-around for this or would could be the cause to save it from happening in the future?
    Cheers,
    Martin

try moving your scratch disk in fcp system preferences to another drive.   Could just be a problem with fcp being unable to write to the drive.

  • Why is the specified file locked?

    Hi
I used a CD-RW & copied a file. When I insert the CD in the slot the sequence opens. When I close & save I get "File Error: The specified file is locked."
What is wrong? Thank you, Faruk

By "within application" I mean do you open the file from the disc, change it, then click save in whatever application the file opens in? That won't work.
I think the confusion is about how CDs/DVDs work as storage media. They are not like old floppy disks, your hard disk, or a USB thumb drive. You can "save" to your hard disk or a thumb drive - but you "BURN" a CD/DVD. When you burn a CD-ROM/DVD-ROM you are making a permanent disc. You cannot 'resave' files to the disc, you cannot add more files to a disc that has been burned - it's locked in that configuration. CD-RW and DVD-RW discs are a little different - with those you still burn and make a locked disc, but with those discs you can erase them and re-burn them (and you MUST completely erase them and re-burn them, you can't just add a file). You still cannot modify files on the discs. Think about it - the ROM in CD-ROM stands for Read Only Memory, meaning you can read from the disc but not write to it (once it's burned).
Your out of disc space error could be one of two things. Either the file is too big for a DVD (single layer holds ~4.7 GB) or you've already burned something to that DVD.
You've noticed that a blank CD-ROM has a capacity of ~700 MB, right? If you insert that blank disc, copy a 2 MB file onto it, then click burn you probably expect there to be 698 MB of free space...NO. If you Get Info on that disc, you will see Space Used = 2 MB, Free Space = 0 MB. That's what I mean by locked - it's burned and you're done! NO more adding files. So when you try to save a file to the disc you've already burned, you cannot. With your hard drive, when you change a file what you're really doing is deleting the last version and writing a brand new version of the file to the hard disk. But like I said, you can only write a file to a CD/DVD when you burn it. So you can't save the modified file.
The idea with CD/DVD discs is that you burn the final versions of your files to them to archive them, send them to friends, etc. If you're working on a file, you do that on your hard disk.

  • File Error: The File Is locked

This is odd. I have multiple timelines, a nightmare project. I tried to save a the prjoject but FCP6 told me that "File Error: The File Is locked" This has never ever happened before. What has happened? I didn't change a thing! I saved the project with a different name and continued. Still, I'm stressed that this will haunt me when we're doing the online or something....
Guys, do you have a clue why FCP told the file would be locked? The manual says it has something to do with file names but I didn't change anything...

Right click on the project file in the finder and check if the LOCKED tick is checked. If so, uncheck it.

    Thanks

I get the error: Cannot Copy 08 the curse in on my house: Cannot find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path and file name.
The song "the curse in on..." is on the "into the woods" soundtrack. I deleted the entire soundtrack from my iTunes Library, shut down and tried again. Same error. I did a search of all three hd (2 external and c) nothing found. I searched for song name and "into the woods" I even searched for the artist "Nicholas Parson Company" nothing on any of the 3 HDs. I also went into explorer and manually searched for the song under soundtracks, misc, various and I could not find it. I consolidated my library and restarted. I tried again and same error message. Can a level 4 or 5 offer any help. I am at a loss...
The error won't let me copy one library to another HD.

  • Please help with "Error writing the project file. The specified module could not be found." error.

I am a student.  I've been trying to install and use Visual Studio 2013 Professional for three weeks now and I cannot get it to work.  I am now two weeks behind in my Visual Basic class.  I've installed, uninstalled, ran the repair option...
I've tried everything I know how to do.  I just spent 45 minutes on the phone with Microsoft, was transferred four times and finally told I will have to use the forums to find an answer.  I'm almost completely out of patience with this.
I got the software through the Dream Spark program as a student.  I installed it with the web installer and it appeared to install fine.  When I try to create a new project, I get the error:  "Error writing the project file.  The
specified module could not be found."
When I exit the application, I also get:  "The automatically saved settings file 'c:\users\user\documents\visual studio 2013\Settings\CurrentSettings-2015-02-02.vssettings' is not available for write.  You can change this file on the 'Import
and Export Settings' Tools Options page."
Please tell me you can help.

    Stephane,
Just to clarify a few things:
    1. Do you get these results for both scan targets? Or only a proxied
scan of the OES11 or OES2 volume?
    2. What sort of volumes are being scanned? NSS? AFP? NCP? What's the
underlying Linux filesystem type, if applicable?
Thanks for helping us understand your problem better.

  • Help!! - "The HP Scan Application was unable to save the file to the specified location."

New OJ6830, latest HP software installed on Win7 64 bit.
HP Scan scans and displays the scanned pages.  But, when I try to save the file as a pdf or tiff, I get the following error message:
"The HP Scan Application was unable to save the file to the specified location."
BTW, I have tried running the app as Administrator and have disabled my antivirus software.
Why won't the HP scan app save the file?  Has anyone else seen this error message?
Is there anything else I can do, or this this just a major bug in HP scan software?

    Mike,
    One Idea:
Make sure you have "San Preview" checked else the software will not accept "specified location".

    Save Scan to Specified Location
