File from dock vanishes

Hi, I had a Documents file in the dock. I dragged it out of the dock to desktops and when I released it it vanished with an animated cloud of smoke. I cannot find it, it's gone. PLEASE HELP, I'm freaking out......

File or do you mean a folder named Documents? The action you took is the normal way to remove things off the Dock. If you really meant a folder, open your home folder, select the Documents folder, and drag it back to the Dock (standard way to put stuff there).

  • Can't open certain files from Dock or Finder Window

Since going to OS 10.6 certain files won't open from the dock or by double clicking them in a Finder window. I think this may only be Excel files. Not all of them behave this way. I haven't found a pattern yet. My dock set up has Folders displayed as lists. When I navigate to a file in a list it should open when I release the mouse. Some do, some don't. Same with finder window, some docs won't open with a double click. They can only be opened by going to Excel and navigating from the File > Open menu. I often Save As on files as I build a new show on top of an old one. Probably an Excel issue. Any ideas?

Nope. For example, one folder has two xls workbooks, two Word docs and a pdf. Only one of the xls workbooks won't open. All the other files open normally. When I try to open the problem xls workbook, whether from the dock or the Finder window, I end up in Excel, but without the workbook opening. When I quit Excel, the problem workbook started Excel, but didn't open.
Update - I'm seeing something now. I use Excel to build "shows," I'm a production mixer for television. I went to one folder, five xls workbooks open fine, four do not. The four that don't open were modified (Save As with changes) with each "show." This was the first pattern I've noticed and only because that particular subfolder had the four workbooks with that relationship. The other xls workbook I described has the Save As file in another folder, but I'm not sure what the original file was. Note - those two "corrupt" files are unrelated, they had different "parents."
What could I look for in the original file that won't open and passed that gene onto its spawn?

  • Cannot drag files from dock

Strange thing has happened to me today. There are some apps that Id like to take out of my dock but everytime I try and drag to trash my screen momentarily locks up, the dock disappears and whatever it was I tried to drag out reappears. Anyone know what I might have done?? This is on my MacBook Pro. It started happening when I tried to load iMovie and IDVD from my iLife 06 disc. Thanks.

Barry thanks for that suggestion. I deleted the pref list as you suggested and rebooted and it worked perfectly. Was also a 2 prong problem as for some reason I was missing some files within the dock.app contents folder so I carried them from my iMac to the MacBookPro and Im back in business. Still running the latest Safari beta as well.

  • Can't drag files from Dock download icon

Up until recently, I could open my download dock icon and drag any file I had downloaded there to the desktop. After the last Mavericks update I can't do this, whether I right-click or left-click any file in the fan (or stack, grid, etc.) is highlighted in blue and then opened...that's the only choice. Here's a screenshot of what it looks like when I click the icon...and it can no longer be dragged to the desktop - http://take.ms/ocPoH. If anyone has any ideas why this just started occurring, thanks for sharing.

It works now! Yes, I think "Big" Bridge wasn't start what time. Thank you!

  • Can't drop files from Downloads or Documents folder on the dock to any other Finder window

I have been downloading some files and dragging/dropping them into another folder for the last 30 minutes or so. They're downloading to the default Downloads folder, and then I've been dragging them from that folder in the Dock, which opens like a fan, and dropping them into another folder (my Documents folder) in an open Finder window.
All of a sudden, I can't drop files from the Downloads fan anywhere else. I also tested, and can't drop files from my Documents folder or my Screenshots folder, two other folders that are on the right side of my dock and open up like a fan.
I can drag them, but when I hover over the folder that I want to drop them into, nothing happens. If I let go, they just stay in their original folder (the Downloads folder).
So basically something happened with the folders on the right side of the dock that's not letting me drop the files anywhere else from the Dock. If I open the folders in their own Finder window, I can drag/drop just fine. It just won't let me do it from the Dock as I had been.
Any ideas? I've tried restarting as well as sleeping/waking as I saw recommended on here, but no luck.

Open Finder, press Option key, select Go > Library, open Preferences, delete com.apple.dock.plist and reboot

  • Can you copy/paste files from the Finder to Mail in Lion, or drag them onto the Mail icon in the Dock to create a new message and attach the files to it?

Message title says it: Can you copy/paste files from the Finder to Mail in Lion, or drag them onto the Mail icon in the Dock to create a new message and attach the files to it?
I can't find anything in the Knowledge Base that says these two options no longer work or still do.
I do not have a system capable of running Lion, but I need to know the answer nonetheless.

Gee, I don't know: "paste attachments mail Lion"? ;-)
One further question, if I may: in Panther (which is where I've aggregated nearly 7 years of mail), if you copy more than one file in the Finder, switch to Mail, and paste the files into a new message, only the file names paste in. If you copy one file and paste it into a Mail message, you get the file, not just the name. Is that still true, or has that (IMHO) bug been fixed since 10.3.9?

  • Dragging files from Mail and Dock to finder stopped

Since installing mavericks I have the problem that I cannot drop files from mail or the dock (downloads) to finder or the desktop. I can drag them and move them around but cannot release them to finder. Drag and drop from finder to finder works fine. When I reboot it works for a while and then stops again. This is very annoying...

    Thank you for replying BDAqua.
If I make the right or left monitor my main monitor the the files drag to the approprate place. When I switch it back to the center montior being the main monitor then the issue comes up again.
Could there be an issue with which monitor is connected to which port?
    It's just weird.
    What else can I try?
    Shawn.

  • I cannot remove files to the desktop (or to any other folders) from 'docked' folders, such as the Downloads and Application folders.

This is occuring on my wife's MacBook Pro Retina 15" early 2013 running 10.9.2
I've never run into this problem before, any helpt would be much appreciated.

I mean that I cannot move files from folders that are in my dock.
That is, when I try to drag something from my Downloads folder in the Dock to my Desktop, it doesn't go anywhere, but simply remains in the Downloads folder in the Dock.
A restart has cured the problem for a while, but it is not the first time it has happened and I worry it will return.

  • Dock vanished uncommanded - Will not obey commands to reappear.

    Hardware MacBook Pro
    Software Mac OS X 10.6.8
This problem followed hard on a software upgrade to 10.6.8
That may just be a coincidence but shorly after this upgrade was installed, the dock simply vanished!
I have powered off and rebooted the MacBook.
The  Apple Dock commands and System Preferences Dock options are not obeyed.
It appears that the dock has somehow been corrupted and requires to somehow become reconstituted.
Just for interest I created a new account on the computer and a new default dock was created.
I would be grateful for any input from the experts out there.
All the usual means of restoring the dock do not seem not to work.
    Hope someone can help.

Step one is to move all dock preference files from your user's /Library/Preferences/ to the Desktop, log out and back in, and see if that fixes the issue. If so, delete the moved files. Note that you'll have to reset the Dock.

  • Unable to delete data files from my Ipod if used as data storage...

    Hello everybody
I bought months ago an Ipod Nano 8GB. I've got an issue when i use it as disk storage i'm not able to sort out. I've checked all the topics but i cannot find any solution.
Example: I use the Ipod with the option "Manually manage music and videos". I put audio and video files on my Ipod through Itunes, then i put also some files on my Ipod as normal data files through my Mac Finder (Easy, i drag VLC, JPG files etc. from folders to my Ipod). The Ipod/Itunes summary page shows (Correctly) the capacity column colored in blue (Audio), video (Purple) and orange (Data). No probs when i transfer data files to another computer.
Problem: when i delete the data files from my Ipod (Through finder) the orange column doesn't disappear (I have no problems if i delete audio/video files via Itunes) and although i've actually deleted all the files if i try to add some other data or videos/music files to my Ipod, Itunes says that there is no space available in my device. It's very strange, i check and double check all the options but eventually i have to restore my Ipod all the times and (Pretty annoying) add all my files again.
It seems that although i sent my files to the trash bin, Itunes (Fully updated) doesn't recognize the change.
It'd be great if someone can help me out as it's very important for me to be able to use my Ipod as disk storage, thanks a lot!

It seems that although i sent my files to the trash bin, Itunes (Fully updated) doesn't recognize the change.
Empty it from the Finder menu or by control-clicking it in the Dock.

  • Numbers freezes when I attempt to open a file from the iCloud

    Hello,
My Numbers app for my iMac freezes when I attempt to open a spreadsheet file from the iCloud.  These same files open fine on my iPad, and I make sure to close Numbers on my iPad before I attempt to open the file on my iMac, but it makes no difference.  The app freezes, and I have to manually force stop the Numbers process.  Any help would be appreciated.

How do I get the dock to recognize the latest numbers version I have.
Go to the Applications folder, find Numbers 3 and drag it to the dock. It will then look like the lower icon here (the one with the 4 columns).
Another way is, if Numbers 3 is already open, to right-click the icon in the Dock and choose 'Keep in Dock' under 'Options':
You can drag the icon with the three columns off the Dock if you don't want to open Numbers 2 from the Dock.
