File mod date changes on all contents of user homes

I've got network home directories shared over AFP in a small office on 10.8 mac mini server. Whenever a user logs in in the morning, all the files in his/her home directory change modification dates to the time of login. Any ideas why?
Not sure what further details would be useful here - other than that it happens to all the network users, every morning they log in.

So what to do about 25,500 photos dating back to 1999 all changed to Feb 2 2010?
I can't solve your underlying problem, but I wanted to point out that there probably are utilities that will - on a batch basis - change these file dates back to whatever you want.
If you lived in the Mac world, I'd point out that iPhoto - the Mac photo cataloging application - will reset the dates and times of selected photos to whatever you want.  So you could select folders or groups of pictures and reset their dates.
Go to Google and see if there is a Windows-equivalent utility.  When I do a search like this on Google, I try to imagine what words or terms would be used in the product description, or on the developer's web page.  Here, I'd choose "reset date" and "pictures" and "file" and "Windows".
This won't help you solve the underlying problem, but it might help you afterwards.
I've started keeping an old backup hard disk in my gun safe, and only updating it in June and December.  That gives me six months to discover that something catastrophic has gone wrong with some of my files - or pictures.
I keep two other backup hard drives that I exchange on a weekly basis.  I could see me corrupting the relevant files on both of my weekly backup drives before I realized that I had a problem.  Hence, the need for a third long-term hard drive.
Sure, an extra hard drive will cost you $50 to $100.  How much time will you have to spend trying to recover from this?

  • Image file access dates changing in mass (Windows).

In review of the access date properties for image files within a directory being accessed by Bridge within the Favorites area, they are all changing to the current time and date, even if the image is not viewed within Bridge.  Why are the access dates of image files being changed even though they are not viewed?  This makes it hard to determine whether an image can be archived or deleted based on last access if Bridge is always changing the access date every day.  Thanks for any insight you can give on this!

Is there a way to turn off the caching of thumbs or metadata or whatever is causing the Access date to change when searching or reviewing images within a directory using Bridge?
As said, no experience with network environment. But Bridge is a browser and when you want to view things it needs to cache the file and data first.
Having said that, in normal usage (stand alone) it stores and saves this data in the cache folder and once it has done so it will not need to recache until you have made changes to the file. Check Bridge prefs / Cache/ Location  to see where the data is stored when you are using this machine.
By default on a stand alone Mac (windows seems to have a similar cache file) it should be in the User Library/ caches/ Adobe/ Bridge CSxx and inhere is a plug in and a folder called Cache, containing several folders.
For Bridge CC there are 4 folders, 256 (the cache files of the thumbs) 1024 (containing HQ preview cache files) data (what it says) and full (containing the 100% previews in cache)
All files that have been fully cached (pointing to a folder the content window should show already good thumbs and the activity bar bottom left in Bridge window should not show any activity, only the number of items showing and items hidden) don't need to recache for that machine again unless you changed something to the file or added metadata.
So once cached there should be no reason for Bridge to 'access' the file again unless access means looking for the file to check if the saved data still applies to the corresponding file on your machine, but then al files should show about the same access time because this is a very fast process on a fast machine.
You can't deselect cache because as said Bridge is a browser showing the content of your files, and to show this it has to generate a thumb and if needed a preview. But as also said, once cached it normally should not start recaching until changes are applied.
You have several ways to set the quality of the cache:
There are two checker board icons top right that give you the option to set for cache. By default it is set to 'Always HQ' to have both good thumbs and a good preview when pointing to a file.
Then you also have to option to generate 100 % previews which provides you with almost instant 100 % previews for loupe in preview panel or full screen view and click. Logically this needs more time and generates a lot of big cache files, all depending on the files you start with and the size of your monitor.
Finally you have the option to use embedded previews only. This is a very quick method but provides low quality thumbs (black border around it) and when clicking on a thumb it first needs to generate a HQ preview that then will take time.
In Bridge prefs advanced there is the option to create also monitor sized previews which should provide you with good quality full screen when using space bar in Bridge to preview in full screen.
This setting also creates a bit larger cache files in the 1024 folder depending on the size of your monitor (logical).
And if you want to apply a search using the find command you also have to include non indexed files to search in all folders, including the not before cached files.
Like first time cache this first indexing takes some extra time but should only need to be done once and then be persistent until you add new files or folders that have not been cached or indexed before.
Until so far the theory for a stand alone. If you have the files stored in a Network and other stations have access and have different cache settings or monitor size settings there might be some other things going on, or someone else has changed the file on their station and then when you select that folder Bridge needs to recache the changes.
Hopefully this makes some sense for you?

  • When I move a file the date changes to the current date

I have old files that I moved from a pc to a jump drive then to my mac. It seems like sometimes the modified date seems to change on its own. Sometimes it changes the update date if a file is renamed, but sometimes all it takes is moving the file.
It frequently happens when I move pictures.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
The authorizations checks in Campus Management consist of the basic authorization and the structural HR authorization.
The basic authorization determines whether the user is allowed to execute a certain function, while the structural authorization determines the objects for which the user is allowed to execute this function. In other words, the basic authorization defines what function the user is allowed to use, and the structural authorization defines for which objects the user is allowed to use this function.
For example, the basic authorization can define that the user is allowed to perform the create module booking activity. With the structural authorization you can restrict this activity only to modules offered by the faculty of Mathematics, for example. (The user can then access these modules whenever required; see also Structural Authorization).
    Basic Authorization
In release CM 4.64, three authorization objects are used in Campus Management:
At the first level is the transaction code check. The system performs this check each time the user starts a transaction using the menu or command line. For this check to be successful, the user requires an authorization for the relevant transaction code in the authorization object S_TCODE.
At the second level, the Campus Management function is divided into two parts. The first part includes activities such as create request, create registration, create re-registration, cancel module booking, and so on. The second part covers master data like student master data and a major part of the academic structure.
When checking the authorizations for master data, the system uses the HR authorization object PLOG for master data authorization checks. A new authorization object ( P_CM_PROC) has been implemented for activities in release CM 4.64. The system now only checks whether the user is authorized to use the activity. It no longer checks if the user is authorized to read or change the data in this activity. The new authorization concept has the following advantages:
    It simplifies authorization assignment. The system no longer uses the comprehensive data model with its many objects and object interrelationships as the basis for the activity authorization (authorization assignment via authorization object PLOG);
    Changes in the data model have no effects on the authorization checks for activities;
    It is now possible to distinguish between create and change operations, for example in re-registrations;
You can now distinguish between re-registrations and leaves of absence.
The table T7PIQPROCESS (Activities) contains all Campus Management activities. The system performs authorization checks for all activities with the exception of the ones listed below.
Authorization checkes are not performed for the following activities:
AC10 (Send Reminder for Outstanding Payments)
    HSMA (Create Status Indicator Manually)
    PR11 (Create Applicability List Automatically)
These activities do not contain any activity-related authorization checks.
In the standard system, the authorization check for activities is independent of the objects for which the activities are performed, and of their attributes. (The structural authorization only restricts the objects which the user can then process irrespective of the activity.). If you require additional checks, you can use the business add-in HRPIQ00AUTHORITY.
    Structural Authorization
The structural authorization enables you to define the set of objects the user is authorized to process. You determine these objects using evaluation paths. You can define whether the user should only be given a display authorization for these objects or a maintenance authorization as well.
You cannot combine the structural authorization with the basic authorization. The user is therefore authorized to process the assigned set of objects irrespective of the function (s)he is currently using.
    Further notes
As functions from other applications areas (Training and Event Management, Notification Processing) and from Student Accounting are integrated in Campus Management, users also need authorizations from these areas.
Campus Management contains a number of roles which you can combine with the roles of other application areas to create composite roles. You can either assign a composite role or individual roles to users.
Component Prefix of the roles provided
    Campus Management SAP_CM_
    Training and Event Management SAP_HR_PE
    Notification processing SAP_CA_NO_NOTIF
    Student Accounting SAP_FI_CA_
You create the business partner authorizations in separate IMG activities which you can find in Customizing for Campus Management in Campus Management Master Data -> Students -> Students as Business Partners -> Basic Business Partner Settings -> SAP Business Partner -> Business Partner -> Basic Settings -> Authorization Management.
In the SAP Reference IMG under Basis Components -> System Administration -> Users and Authorizations, you can find more IMG activities in which you can make general settings for authorizations.

  • Copy distribution list  to all content services user folders

We have an Outlook distribution list PST file that current resides in a Windows file server. This gets pushed out the the personal folder of each user overnight.
Going forward, we need to push this PST file to all the Content Services user personal folders (Users-A, Users-B ... Users-Z).
I created a single superuser that has all administrative rights to all the users personal folders. And I can upload a file through the webdav http interface.
with the "Upload" button while I'm "Switched to Administrative Mode" only.
And I can't see the users personal folders while using the Oracle Drive nor
    thru a Network drive.
Is there a way of pushing this to all the users' personal folders???

    Hi Juan,
I tried that but it is not showing the shared distribution list for moving.
I found 1 sap BC office document which stats that moving the distribution list form Private to public is not possible due to security reason.
So, no options for me and to create manual shared distribution list.
    Thanks

  • Revised file will now not export all content

We have successfully created a book containing text and graghics and exported a pdf file to a publisher for review. The publisher accepted the pdf and sent us a proof copy.  After adding another layer of background to most of the pages of the original file that was successfully exported,  we now have several pictures that will not show up on the revised exported pdf.  These pictures appear to have all the correct link data and were exported in the original copy sent to the publisher.  Any ideas on this would be greatly appreciated.  We have tried relinking.  We have tried recreating the page.  We have re-placed all the photos to make sure they were linking properly... as in when you first put a picture in you "place" it and I have re-done that at least twice.  I have created a few different effects on some of the pages that are not displaying the pictures such as adding a basic feather to the outside edge.  No rhyme or reason as to why they are not showing up... these same things have been done to other pages with no problem.  I have looked at the display about the page and checked links and transparency and compared the pages that won't show up with the pages that do show up... I cannot tell any difference.
Please advise what to do... I am at a loss and this last little bump in the road is really holding up my work!!
I am wondering if it is adviseable to totally recreate all the pages again in a new file?  I would just copy and paste the current pages into the new file.  Would this work at all?
    Thank you so much...
I appreciate your expertise in this matter!
    Sincerely,
    sih63

  • Location of File Containing Data for "reopen all windows from last session"

I'm a heavy-duty Safari user and usually keep 100+ tabs and windows open, carefully invoking the command "reopen all windows from last session" each time I restart. Unfortunately, I screwed up today and started and quit Safari without invoking "reopen all windows from last session," and all of my open tabs and windows are gone.
I can recover the tabs manually using my history listings, but there must be an easier way: the information about the last session has to be stored somewhere. I did a Deja Vu backup on Friday and today I copied the files /~user/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist and all the files from /~user/Library/Safari, including HistoryIndex.sk, History.plist, and LastSession.plist, from my backup to my hard drive, but the result was unchanged (that is, my 100+ tabs and windows were nowhere to be found).
Given the time it takes for Safari to shut down, I assume it's storing a large history file somewhere, if only I knew where. Does anybody out there know or could otherwise help my recover from my stupidity?
    Thanks in advance.
    -- Kevin
(proud Mac user for 23 years)

I found a work-around. Since I frequently quit Safari and "reopen all windows from last session" upon restart, my history reflects all of the open tabs and windows contiguously. I thus reloaded the history file, invoked the command "History --> Show All History," found the most recent such contiguous history listing, shift-clicked and selected all relevant listings, and then double-clicked. All of my formerly open tabs and windows were reopened in tabs within a single window. I had to go back and rearrange things but it was far simpler than manually reopening all of those tabs and windows.

  • Schedule Line Date Changed By Standard Code After User Exit

We've implemented USEREXIT_MOVE_FIELD_TO_VBEP to conditionally change the schedule line date (it changes VBEP-EDATU) when sales orders are being created.  This functions correctly when VA01 or EDI is used.  However, when the order is created using BAPI_SALESORDER_CREATEFROMDAT2, standard code executing after the user exit changes the schedule line date to an incorrect value.
The user exit correctly changes the schedule line date; then later on in the execution subroutine VBEP_FUELLEN_VBEPKOM in include FV45EFEP_VBEP_FUELLEN_VBEPKOM is executed which changes the date on line 37 using the value in US_VBEPKOM-EDATU.  US_VBEPKOM-EDATU is in scope in the user exit, but earlier in subroutine VBEP_FUELLEN_VBEPKOM (line 12 to be exact) this variable is updated with the value in US_VBEPKOM1-EDATU, which is not in scope during the user exit.  So, USEREXIT_MOVE_FIELD_TO_VBEP doesn't have access to US_VBEPKOM1-EDATU and can not ensure that the correct value is used later on in subroutine VBEP_FUELLEN_VBEPKOM.
I noticed at the end of subroutine VBEP_FUELLEN_VBEPKOM it calls USEREXIT_MOVE_FIELD_TO_VBEPKOM.  I could update VBEP-EDATU here to correct the error whenever the order is created using the BAPI, but it would be nice to have a solution that could be implemented only in USEREXIT_MOVE_FIELD_TO_VBEP without also having to implement USEREXIT_MOVE_FIELD_TO_VBEPKOM.
So my question: is there a way to update the schedule line date in USEREXIT_MOVE_FIELD_TO_VBEP where it won't be changed later in subroutine VBEP_FUELLEN_VBEPKOM when the order is created using the BAPI?

    Hi Caetano,
    thanks for your suggestion
Yes, we use firm zone for few of the vendors. there the system don't change the schedule lines.
Also for the stock transfer PR's there is no firm zone and the lead time is one day. in this case it changes everyday after the MRP run.
the stock transfer PR's leads to the creation of Schedule lines from the source plant. Since this PR gets changed everyday. the alerts coming out of MD07 gets changed and we really did not know if this order is delayed or not.  In the source plant we use the firm zone to avoid moving the schedule line. But then the alerts are always not correct.
is there any setting which helps in not moving the PR everyday without using " start in the past"
    thanks

  • Problem changing the location of multiple users home directories...

I've just set up a new entry level model iMac for my Mum. Without getting into a discussion about the benefits or otherwise of doing so, I partitioned the hard disk into two with the first partition for the system and the second a scratch disk for files etc. I set up two users, one for my Mum and one for my younger brother. I then copied the users folder across to the scratch disk and in advanced options in the users list set each account's home folder to the relevant user on the scratch disk. This is the same set up as I have on my own system and with which I have no problems and which runs well and cleanly. I have only one account on my system. However on the iMac, the second user (my brother) is unable to write to the new home directory. Downloads don't work and preferences including right click for magic mouse, dock etc are forgotten instantly. It seems there's a permissions issue.
I've set the machine up this way in order to keep all their files separate from the system after their last Mac got very bogged down. I expected it to work in exactly the same way as my own. Does anyone know how to successfuly set up both user accounts in this way?
Any advice would be much appreciated...

how exactly did you copy the home directories? did you do it using drag and drop in finder from one account? then the copied home directories both are owned by that account and the permissions need to be changed. please clarify if that's what you did.

  • How do I change or remove default apps for a given file extension (in Terminal?) without munging date modified on all my old files?

When a program is installed, it seems to be able to do it (sometimes inappropriately if it hijacks file associations without asking) so why can't I?  This is for 10.4.
    Specifically:
    1. Since installing an HP wireless printer, HP not only tries to install a bunch of sales-ware on your machine that you have to carefully opt out of (annoying, but not a problem if forewarned), it changes the default file association for a number of basic file types, listing all sort of existing files as HP printer files. Using Get Info to change the default file type association globally causes it to mark ALL the files of that type as newly updated, munging the file metdata (which HP did NOT do). Most of the stuff on our computer is sorted by last modified, so if there is a way to fix this in Terminal (to simply fix or remove the HP default tag) without changing the date the file was modified, it would help. Note that uninstalling the program that created the default would do this, but I obviously can't do that (and reinstalling HP would have the same effect). So there has to be another way, right?
    2. Since updating iTunes to v.9 a while back, every mp3 is marked as an iTunes file even though iTunes has NO multiple library capability without a wonky reboot using the option key, meaning that if I click on an mp3 downloaded since last update of iTunes, it opens automatically in iTunes and gets added to the SOLE itunes library without asking. (There is no way to toggle between multiple libraries or archive media in separate folders; iPhoto has a similar problem. (Has this been fixed in the latest version of iTunes?) In comparison, Quicktime starts up immediately and does not attempt to create a playlist just because you opened a file and listened to it.
(The iTunes playlists are simply subfolders of the single main library -- and you can't create a new library without doing a wonky procedure by clicking option during startup and telling iTunes to forget where its library is located (includin everything in it) and look up an entirely separate one by hand. So any mp3 file downloaded recently is uploaded to iTunes if you click on it. This wouldn't be problem if it didn't automatically add it to the sole iTunes library just because you clicked on it.)
Besides, all my old mp3s are Quicktime files and they are all archived by date modified. To its credit, ITunes, unlike HP, does NOT hijack older files already on disk and remark them as iTunes files. It only marks newly downloaded files as such.  But if I try and change file association for FUTURE mp3 files using Get Info > "use this program for all files of this type", it munges the file metadata (date modified) for all existing files!
Note that in HP case, it apparently does it at the file exchange preference level (or whatever it's called) since the OS then recognizes every file of those types as an HP file. In the iTunes case, it only does it if you download a new media file or open an existing file in iTunes, but again without changing the date it was last edited.
Since these programs are able to change the default file association without changing the date the file was last edited, it should be reversible in Terminal, correct?  Why does it change "date modified" when you try and correct metadata using Get Info (or sometimes just by clicking an enclosing folder?) Date modified should be a record of when a file itself was edited, not when it was renamed, or other metadata. Otherwise stuff can't be sorted correctly.

The unix commands you need are:
    GetFileInfo
    SetFileInfo
    and maybe find
for cryptic details use the man command
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
    man SetFileInfo
You may use the SetFileInfo command to set the file type & the program which will open the file.

  • Dates change from Numbers generated xls file when copy/pasted

I've saved a Numbers '09 file as xls and sent it to an Excel 2003 for Windows user.  The file looks great when they open it in Excel 2003.  But, when they copy and paste data into a different Excel 2003 file, the date changes about 4 years, which seems to make this a 1900/1904 issue.   But why?  If Excel 2003 opened up the original xls file generated by Numbers ok, why can't the dates be copy and pasted into another Excel 2003 spreadsheet?

Apple uses a year pattern that starts with the first day of the first leap year in the 20th century.
Microsoft originally adopted a year pattern that began with the first day of the last year of the 19th century (1900) which, although it was a year divisible by 4, was not a leap year.
Later, MS added the 1904 start pattern, but kept the1900 start pattern as well.
What is likely happening in the case you describe is this:
When Numbers traslates the document into Excel format and saves it, Numbers apparenly includes the flag that tells Excl 'use the 1904 start for dates.' Excel open the file, reads the code, and sets the calendar accordingly.
When the Excel 2003 user then copies the data frm that document, the copy picks up only the date serial number(s), and does not get the coded flag identifying which date system is in use.
That data is then pasted into the new Excel document, and with no flag to tell it different, Excel uses its 'normal' setting—the calendar starts on January 1, 1900—and all dates are interpreted as being four years earlier than they were in the original Numbers table or in the first Excel sheet.
I'd assume there is a setting that can be changed in Excel. Where to find it/how to use it would be a good question for an Excel community discussion site. (Although it's possible an answer might arrive here as well.)

  • DNG file modification date not changed by writing metadata?

I use LR 2.7 on Windows XP.   To my surprise, I just noticed that writing metadata updates (e.g., new keywords) from LR to the DNG files does NOT appear to update the file modification date, which suggests obvious issues for backup strategies (yes, I understand that a changed modification date introduces other backup issues).   I have verfifed that the metatdata does indeed change in the DNG files, so I am mystified.   Can someone shed some light on this?   Thanks.

Yes, I explicitely invoke "save metadata to file".   Furthemore, I have checked the behavior by (a) modifying DNGs in LR; (b) saving the metatdata to the DNG; (c) creating a new LR catalog and importing the revised DNGs.    The metadata changes do show up in the re-imported DNGs (and the metadata field "Metadata Date" correctly shows the recent change).  Morevover, the file sizes do change (wth the metadata changes) even though the modification dates shown in windows explorer do not change.
However, I just redid the experiment to double check, and discovered an important clue - the mysterious behavior occurs when the DNG files are on a NAS device (in particular a Netgear ReadyNAS Duo.   To summarize:
         - When the DNG files are on a local hard drive, the file modification dates change as expected
         - When the DNG files are non local (i.e., on the network but on a NAS device), the file modification dates do not change even though the file sizes do change;
What's more, I see the same behavior when accessing the DNGs via Adobe Bridge (CS5) - i.e., if I change the metadata, I'm asked if I want to apply the metadata changes to the DNG, and I say yes (and confirm by looking via Bridge at a copy of the changed file).   On a local disk, the file modificaiton dates change (as do the modification date displayed in Bridge), but if the files are on the NAS, the modification dates do not.
    Any additional thoughts?

  • What is the difference between retore and erase all content and settings

i was wondering what is the difference an ordinary retore in itunes and a erase all content and setting on my ipod touch. do they both do the same thing because i might sell my ipod and also does this process require you to connect to itunes after or can you just give it to the new user.

Erase all settings restores the device to its original factory state. All your stuff is gone and there is no iOS installed.
iTunes Restore simply replaces the device content with that from your last backup. It does not change the version of nor install a version of iOS. Whateve version of iOS is on the device remains.
Restore is used if you are having a problem with something on your device. Erase all Settings is used to remove everything in the event you were selling the device and wanted to clear it of all your files and data.
