Files and folders becoming read-only

Lots of my files and folders have become read-only after
downloading Eclipse (I have used the Europa version as I needed to
also download CFEclipse as well to program in ColdFusion) and Adobe
ColdFusion. When you right-click and go to properties, the
read-only button is highlighted, so I have clicked this off, but it
reappears when you right-click and look at it again.
Does anybody know what has caused this and how I can fix
this?

Hi,
After opening your eclipse,
Hit alt+shift+w and click "Navigator"
and then select your project folder -> right click it,
Go to properties and turn off read only.

  • Folders become read/only when transfered to windows

I find that when I transfer a folder from my Mac to a PC windows reports the folder (and contents) as read only. Ownership is transferable, but try as I might, I cannot change the status to be not read only on windows. However, I can read, write, and modify the folders and files most of the time.
Recently, I transfered a very large folder hierarchy from my Mac to a PC and ran into an additional problem. When I add or modify any document in the hierarchy, the containing folder is duplicated by windows in the same location with the same name but empty of contents. Of course this causes a world of trouble, since there are now two identically named folders in the same location (one of which is empty).
How can this happen and where can I get information on how to prevent it? BTW, I am a Mac user by nature and only use the PC when I have to, that is why I try to find answers here!
Thanks in advance for any help.

I am posting back here because I discovered the cause of the second problem mentioned in the above post. IE: the problem of misbehaving folders in windows.
First, some background. The folder structure is rather large and complex, so I created it using applescript and a text file with outline levels. Unfortunately, some of the outline titles (which became folder titles) ended in a space.
Apparently windows does not like folders (files too?) to end with a space. While this never affected my Mac, when I transfered the data and structure to the PC it went haywire. I did notice that the duplicate folders were not identical as I first thought, but rather were generated without the trailing space(s). Now it is just a matter of removing all the trailing spaces and it appears that windows can handle the folders.
However, every folder I put on the PC still says it is read only and I can't seem to change that. Any help?

  • Folders become read-only and I can't get them changed back, any suggestions?

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The read-only setting on folders has nothing to do with the read-only status of the contents. It's used by Windows for its own peculiar purposes. Basically, it's none of our business.

  • Files and folders moved to NAS become read only.

I just got an Iomega NAS. When I move files and folders to it from my Macbook, they become read only when they get there. Files from my girlfriend's PC stay read/write when they are moved to the NAS.
I first noticed this with iTunes. I changed the location of my iTunes folder to be on the NAS and I let iTunes copy the music itself. Now, I can add music by new artists, but if I try to add an artist that I already have a folder for, it won't let me because the folder is read only. Also, I can't change any of the info for any files in iTunes.
I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, but it looks like all of the files and folders on my Mac are set up so that only I can see them. When I click "get info" on any file on the computer, it shows:
    me : read/write
    staff: read only
    everyone: read only

When I open a finder window, I see two icons for the NAS in the "shared" section. The first one is:
    hmnhd-ti2mkg
When I click "get info" it shows "Kind: PC Server" and there is no mention of permissions in the "get info" box.
    The second one is:
    hmnhd-TI2MKG.local
When I click "get info" it shows "Kind: Server" and there is no mention of permissions in the "get info" box.
Clicking on either one of these icons lets me browse through the exact same shares and folders. There is no difference between going in to one or the other. They both have the same permissions on all folders, as well.
"Jacob's iTunes Music" is a share on the NAS. All of my read only files (that I want to change to read/write) are already in this share.
Clicking "get info" on any of the shares shows them as "Kind: Sharepoint" with no mention of permissions.
I think I'm going to try to have iTunes copy all the files to my computer, change the permissions, then have it copy them back to the NAS. Is there a way to change permissions of folders, subfolders, and files without having to click "get info" on each and every one?

After reinstalling OSX I have an external harddrive with locked files and folders. • Permission not granted on files and become Read Only

Even though the files are not marked read only they open that way on any other computer. Has anyone had this problem and how did you resolve it?
    Thanks for any help.

When we create a file and then close it and someone else opens it, it will not let them work on it. It states that it is read only. We are working on CS3 version. Anything else you need to know?

  • Howto make created folders/ files from one teacher, read only for other teachers?

    Hello there,
as an admin @ school I was wondering how to make created folders/ files from one teacher, read only for other teachers?
     - In a 2008domain, created a group "teachers"
     - created a folder "teacher data" where all teachers have read/write permissions
ideal,a teacher who make's a folder in "teacher data" should be the only oen who is able to add file's to that folder and dele that folder or files. Other teachers may be able to read the content of the folder.
Is this possible to set up and how?
    many thanks.
    Nico.

    Hi Nico,
You could set the permissions below to resolve the issue:
For the root folder "teacher data": give the full control permission to CREATOR OWNER – "Subfolders and files only" and give the read/write permissions to the group "teachers"– "This folder only".
    Best Regards,

This article contains the only thing that worked for me.  I also had to sign out of iCloud and uninstall it.  Then I had to delete all files and folders from all of those applications that were under Program Files, Program Files x86, Program Data and Users.  My iPhone 4 will now sync with iTunes both in its USB-connected  mini dock and over Wi-Fi.  It's unfortunate (negligent programming on the part of Apple?) that the upgrade to iTunes 11 did not remove all of those files as part of the upgrade process.

I am having the same issue....Same address for years - same as USPS - I tried 5 times (3 macs and 2 iPhones) and now i have 5 CHARGES for 1.00 each on my credit card. I took the credit card info off so they don't charge me anymore. How can they charge me yet still not allow me to download free updates and say I have an invalid address? I'm sure I will spend weeks or months trying to get a credit out of these incompetent idiots.

  • Make "File name" and "Files of type" fields read-only in JFileChooser

I try to make the "File name" and "Files of type" fields read-only in JFileChooser dialog. Anybody
    knows how to do? Thanks.

You mean so the user can't choose the name of the file to open or save? Not much point in even using a JFileChooser, then, is there? Or did I misunderstand the question?

  • How do I get Firefox to show hidden files and folders. It should be available under help but help only gets as far as Open Containing folder and doesn't go on to show hidden files and folders

I am trying to find the status of Adobe Flash Player on my computer. I am advised that it exists in Firefox's hidden files and folders but I cannot find such a folder

You have an older version of Flash installed - Shockwave Flash 10.0 r45
You can see that for yourself in Tools > Addons > Plugins
"Show hidden files and folders" is a function of the Operating System, not an application such as Firefox. Windows Control Panel > Folder Options > View - Advanced Settings

  • When downloading and opening a file through Firefox 5 on a Windows 7 machine, files are downloading and opening as read-only.

I am trying to download an attachment from gMail. When I select download, I can open or save as the document. If I select "open", it opens the file, but makes it read only.
If I do this exact action in IE8, it opens the document normally.

Unfortunately, I have not found a solution for this problem yet.
But I did find out, that Safari only crashes, when I choose a "custom" location to save the file at. When I simply click on Download to "Safari Downloads", it keeps working perfectly.
So it seems to be a problem with the choosing of a file location.
Does this give anyone an idea what else I could try?

  • All folders changed Read Only

Okay, so recently, just about all my folders (including every subfolder in iTunes and the such) have become read only. So whenever i try to change something, i need to set that folder back to read and write for Me. This is very annoying, and I don't know what happened to make all the folders read only.
Is there some way to change all the permissions on my disk back to Read and Write for Me (the administrator) without going through every single folder?

first, whatever you do, don't try to make everything on your hard drive read+write for yourself. this will invariably brick the system and you'll have to reinstall. there is no other outcome possible.
where exactly are the problem files located? only in your itunes folder? somewhere else in your home directory? what exactly does the permissions panel for such files say?

  • Snow Leopard changing files and folders to aliases

At random times, Snow Leopard is changing random files and folders to aliases that point to nothing. The original file or folder is lost! This is a very, very serious flaw in the operating system. For the four files I've lost this way, I was able to restore them with Time Machine. I only noticed these files were lost by chance. What will happen to those that I haven't noticed? When my Time Machine partition becomes full and it starts eliminating older versions, those that I haven't noticed will be gone forever. A file system is supposed to preserve my data for me; I shouldn't have to worry about it. And I shouldn't have to rely on Time Machine for flaws in the file management system. This is very, very bad! It is not possible to overstate how very bad this is. Has anyone else noticed this? Does Apple know about this? Is there a known cause? Is there a known fix?
Message was edited by: required desired alias

I haven't looked at any console logs. I'll have to figure out how to do that. I suppose I have to do it soon after I discover that a file has been altered.
It has happened to my data files in the data partition.
There are lots of good reasons for separating the system and applications from my data. It makes backup management easier. My data I want to backup frequently. I don't want to backup the system very frequently. If the system develops a bug, I don't want a backup of the system to overwrite a good old system in my backup drive before I discover the bug. A separate partition for my data makes backups of my data faster. There are thousands of files down there in the system and with everything in a single partition even incremental backups (via SuperDuper) take a long time to scan through all that system junk to find differences. I don't like to have to drill down three levels in the file hierarchy to find my stuff in the user folder. My data partition sits on the desktop as it did in systems 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. If I keep my data in a separate partition, I can do anything that I want with the access permissions for my data. (Don't ever mess with the permissions in the system partition; it can really screw things up.) I can set the permissions so that I don't have any problems when accessing my data from another computer or as another user. Systems break occasionally and it's easy to restore just the system and applications from a backup of just that. I never have to go back to the install disc; if you restore from an install disc, you have to download and install all of the system updates posted since your install disc was printed, you might have to reinstall applications, you have to find all of your registration numbers for your applications, you lose all of your preferences. I also sometimes run multiple systems. I never buy into a new system right away. I keep both the new system and my old system in separate partitions while I try out the new one. If I find unacceptable bugs or limitations in the new system, it's easy to switch back to the old. If I find I've got an application that has been rendered obsolete by the new system, I can easily switch back to the old system. I mirror my data partition to my laptop. The system can't be mirrored to another computer and all that I want over there is the stuff on my data partition anyway. Mirroring the data is simple when it is all collected in a separate partition in both my desktop and my laptop.
I'm passionate about partitioning. In the Mac I just retired, I had 4 physical drives, but I repartitioned them creating RAID arrays (for speed) such that each of the 4 virtual partitions (system, data, scratch, & backup system) did not correspond to any physical drive. It worked fine for years.

  • I just restored my 13" MBP i5 at the apple store to the newest version of Lion after issues with a previous Time Machine backup from Snow Leopard- this time I created a new account and just ported files and folders, and now MS Office doesn't work. Help?

I just restored my 13" MBP i5 at the apple store to the newest version of Lion after issues with a previous Time Machine backup from Snow Leopard- this time I created a new account and just ported files and folders, and now MS Office doesn't work.
^^ that's the main problem. Here's the full history.
I bought a new 13" i5 MBP, early 2011 edition. I had an old white Macbook 2.14 ghz core2duo on Snow Leopard. I attempted to port over my time machine backup, but encountered problems in that my User was inaccessible from the new computer after the import finished, and I had to go in and change the root password, etc, and for some reason or another, I couldn't install any programs at all from that administrator's account. By "couldn't" I mean I could install them, but upon installation they would never boot. So, I took it to the apple store and did a clean install from the most up to date Lion OSX. Then, I created a brand new admin account, instead of trying to import the old one, and things seemed great. Then, I just imported my old files from the TM backup, but not any system settings, permissions, or user data. Just my Docs, pics, vids, apps, and itunes stuff.
Here's where things get weird again. I imported this stuff under the name "old", but all of these folders have a red negative sign on them, marking them as restricted. So, from my main admin account, I cannot even peruse these folders. Since I didn't import user data, I can't sign in to the "old" account to change permissions. I already tried to change the permissions from system preferences, but that didn't change anything. And now, for whatever reason, of all the apps that were imported then, MS Office is the only set of apps that does not work. When I click on it, it just says there was a problem and asks if I'd like to send a report to apple. I tried reinstalling it to no avail. I'm an English student, so i really need access to Word. Can anyone help? The Apple store is a major detour for me and would like to fix this issue myself.

Most likely you have Office 2004 which are PPC-only applications and will not work in Lion. Upgrade to Office 2011. Other alternatives are:
Apple's iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.)
Open Office (Office 2007-like suite compatible with OS X.)
    NeoOffice (similar to Open Office.)
LibreOffice (a new direction for the Open Office suite.)
