Files Not Sorting Within Folders

I have my working AppleWorks files on my external HD. Recently the files within folders donot sort. As a test I changed a file name staring with an M to an A. The file did not sort to the top of the list. As far as I can tell nothing has changed within my system. The files on my system HD are OK. The other files on the external HD are OK - only the AW files are wrong.
Under the "view" options the name sort is only available for the Desktop. When I open the external HD or highlight a folder the name sort option is not available. I must be missing something but what..

  • Mail Not Sorting new Folders Added Alphbetically

    Hello! I have tons of sub folders in my inbox, and I would like it to sort them all alphabetically. This was all fine, but recently the last 6 folders I added to the list were appended to the bottom of the list, and not sorted alphabetically with the rest of the sub folders. Is there anyway I can reapply the sort alphabetically feature to the folder list? I cannot seem to find it anywhere.
    Troubleshooting steps I have taken:
    1) Closed and restarted Mail App
    2) Restarted Computer
    3) Added another new folder and it is still appended to bottom of list even after all the reboots
    4) Mail is confirmed to work
    Any help would be great. Thanks!

    Hi,
    I'm not sure, but I suspect the new Snow Leopard feature ...
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/refinements/enhancements-refinements.html#mail
    ... that lets you move folders around manually might be what's causing the weird behavior.
    In Leopard, you could move a folder inside another folder but, otherwise, they would always stay in alphabetical order, I think.
    Anyways, in Snow Leopard (and Leopard for that matter), there's an invisible file around ~/Library/Mail/<name of your email account>/.mboxCache.plist It seems to keep a list of the mboxes in that folder/account. In Snow Leopard, the first time you manually move an mbox out of alphabetical order, a new key called MailboxDisplayOrder seems to get created in that plist for all the existing "non-special" (i.e. not INBOX, Sent, Drafts, etc.) mboxes in that folder. Once that key exists, it seems like new folders get appended to the end of the order.
    I don't know the right way to fix the problem though. I'm really just posting my observations, based on what I'm seeing on my computer. I'd be very careful about manually messing with invisible files in your mail, especially if you don't have a good backup. (No idea if you can restore an invisible file with Time Machine.) A lot of this is guesswork. But I thought maybe it'd help someone.

  • Bookmarks not sorted into folders disappear when trying to manage bookmarks

    I have a fairly large number of bookmarks I want to sort into folders.
    I also have a number of existing folders with bookmarks in them.
    When I go into the Bookmark Manger the folders appear, I can access and edit their contents, but the unsorted bookmarks are not visible for me to move into appropriate folders.
    Running Firefox 3.6.8 on WinXP-SP3. Earlier versions of Firefox

  • Size of resulting file not displayed within Preview

    Under Snow Leopard, when you were saving a file from within Preview, you were shown the size of the resultant file, and the effect on this size as you changed the quality.  Under OS X 7, Preview, you can still change the quality of the file that you are saving, but Preview does not appear to display the size of the resultant file.  Can this be turned back on, and if so, how?

    Hi
    When you embed the .swf inside a html page just specify the new object width and height (preferably keep aspect ratio). If your symbol/object/sprite inside the the movie are all vector, you should not suffer any quality loss.
    If your movie has raster image (e.g. jpg), you'll need to open the original .fla and use flash to resize the stage/canvas and everything inside it.
    If you don't have the .fla source, try open your .swf file using swf decompiler software (like sothink) and convert it back to .fla, then use flash to resize it.
    Thanks

  • Not all files not showing within Preferences folder

    Hi,
    I encountered a strange problem with my Preferences folder in the User Library. As I am moving from one machine to another I need to copy some preferences files. The files exist when you search for them in the Finder. As it seems though only preferences files from A to C are displayed when looking into the folder (option - Go Folder). Any ideas?

    Hi,
    Thank you very much, but this dows not solve the problem I have. I am able to open the Preferences folder, so I do see .plist files, but not all of them! Only files beginning with letters from A to C are displayed, then the list simply ends. The files however do exist. When searching via Finder/Spotlight for a specific file, it is listed in the results and the path displayed shows Users/.../Library/Preferences.

    Looping a Flash movie is done by design, not by some settings you make in the Publish Settings or the html embedding code.  If you make sure that you have no stop(); commands at the end of the timeline in the Flash Movie then it will automatically loop.  If the file does not use the timeline, but you instead have some component playing, such as a video or something, then you need to build in the controls that will detect the end of play of that component and reset it all to play again.  You may need to head to the Flash forums to get help with this.

  • Automatic sorting of albums within folders

    I guess iPhoto still does not have any way (that I could find) of automatically sorting Albums that are within folders.
    I know you can drag and drop, but that becomes a pain when you have a large number of Albums.
    Anyone have any options for sorting within Folders?

    lekos:
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Are you referring to Events in the Events or Photos window? In the Events window you can sort the Events by title or date but in the Photos window Events can only be sorted by Date, either ascending or descending by using the View->Sort menu options.
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • .indd files not opening with recently installed Indesign CS3

    The .indd files don't have the Indesign icon next to them, instead they have the win32 icon. When I double click on one of the files an error message appears telling me that...
    "this file is not a valid win32 application"
    Even when I right-click on the file and choose to open with Indesign, it tells me the same thing. Also in this options menu, Indesign is not shown with the Indesign logo next to it, but rather the windows generic 'unknown file type' logo.
    If I open Indesign first however, and then choose file>open and choose the file. It opens fine.

    Exactly my situation yesterday, with the icon disappearing and INDD files not opening within InDesign from Explorer.
    I'm using an early XP Pro, which I guess qualifies it as 32 bit.
    The steps to rebuilding everything using the Folder Options in Windows Explorer are:
    Tools > Folder Options > File Types
    If INDD is not listed, click the New button to creat an entry, otherwise select it and click the Advanced button.
    You have an option to change the icon, so navigate to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS3 and select the InDesign icon.
    Then under actions you need to create four actions that will relate to the context menu choices when you right click an INDD files, so click New and add actions for edit, open, preview and print.
    In the Application used to perform action box enter "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS3\InDesign.exe" "%1"
    Those quote marks are important. Just browsing to InDesign.exe will fill the box for you, but for some reason - for me at least - it creates the %1 indicating to open the file you selected, but it doesn't wrap it in quotes. And without those quotes (at least on my machine) InDesign will start but won't load the file.
    There is also a check box to use DDE. I don't know what's appropriate here, but I ticked the box and it works OK.

  • I want to build an apple script that will parse the name of a file and sort it into folders.

    This is for medical application, so I will do it as such: CLIN_FAM_PAT_FILE_DATE.EXT sorts into Folders: Family/Patient/Type/Date, either sorting into folders that already exist (and make them shared folders eventually for each patient) or creating new folders with names as indicated by the file name.  The Prefix "CLIN" is an indication that the file is a clincial patient document and so needs to be filed.  Files without that prefix would be ignored.
    So the file format would be:
    Family Folder
    Family DocumentsDocument Type folders
    Patient folders - for each person who is a member of that houshold unitDocument Type Folders (such as x-rays, lab reports, or insurance info)Within each document type, there would be separate folders based on the date (or at least the order of the docs would be by date)
    For example:   A document called CLIN_JONES123_JAMES228_LAB_022614.PDF which is a lab summary for James Jones done on 2/26/14 would go here
    JONES123 FolderJAMES228 FolderLab Results FolderFebruary 2014 Folder.
    Makes sense?  I am initially putting these files into a Filemaker Pro database and having it compile the files based on patient name, type, date, etc.  But need to use Applescript to create the folders so things are organized in a way that I can easily share with patients.
    Makes sense?

    You can call this script from Applescript (just need to do some escaping of quotes):
    This can be run in Applescript:
    do shell script "
    DestinantionFolder=$HOME/Desktop
    MONTHS=(January February March April May June July August September October November December)
    for f in ~/Desktop/*
    do
         if [[ $( echo \"${f##*/}\" | cut -d_ -f1 ) == \"CLIN\" ]] ; then
              ff=$( echo \"${f##*/}\" | cut -d_ -f2 )
              pd=$( echo \"${f##*/}\" | cut -d_ -f3 )
              date=$( echo \"${f##*/}\" | cut -d_ -f5 )
              date=${date%%.*}
              mo=${date:0:2}
              yr=20${date:4:2}
              Dir=$DestinantionFolder/$ff/$pd/${MONTHS[$mo-1]}\\ $yr/
              if [ ! -d \"$Dir\" ]; then
                   mkdir -p \"$Dir\"
              fi
              mv \"$f\" \"$Dir\"
         fi
    done"
    ...is there a way to trigger this whenever a new file is created to check and see if it needs to be moved
    Yes, with Automator.  When you Open Automator, choose Folder Action
    I copied what you did and while the script ran successfully, I don't see any new folders created.  Your shell script makes sense; I am not sure why it doesn't create folders.
    The script as written only looks for files in the Desktop Folder
    (edit by changing: DestinantionFolder=$HOME/Desktop )
    To test I created a file on my Desktop
      touch ~/Desktop/CLIN_JONES123_JAMES228_LAB_022614.PDF
    and Folders were created and the file moved.
    (Note: I only tested that format.  If the file has any other format, it will fail)

  • Sort photos into folders-within-folders? Thanks guys.

    Hey guys, does anyone know if it's possible to place photo albums into folders? I.e. Can I essentially sort my photos into folders-within-folders? If not, any opinions on the best app that achieves this? Thanks guys.

    1 - do not go into the iPhoto library using the finder and never, never make any changes of any sort to the structure or content of the iPhoto library using the finder or other programs - use iPhoto to manage your photos - it must totally control the library - it is a SQL database
    2 - Within iPhoto you can create albums from photos and you can create folders - folders can hold albums or other folders
    3 - you also have smart albums and the search in the lower left which lets you find any photo easily if you have assigned faces, places and keywords

  • Scaling feature for files within folders.

    I purchased Lion yesterday and after a confusing purchase process a little box on the screen said it was installing. I do slide show presentations and really enjoyed the scaling feature for files found on the lower right hand corner within folders. That feature is not available in Lion as far as I can tell. Does anyone know if this feature is still available and can be activated through a preference?
    I have found several useful features that were part of Snow Leopard are not available in Lion.  To say Lion is better is questionable in my mind.  Anyway, one question at a time.
    Thanks

    When viewing a folder in finder that contains your slide show presentations, you can ctrl click (right click) the background and choose "Show View Options". You can then use the Icon size slider to increase the size of the icons in that folder. The size you choose for that particular folder will be remembered next time you open it.

  • Lightroom 5 will not sort images properly, either by file name or capture time.  How can I fix this issue?

    I am using Lightroom 5 with OSX 10.9.2 and the sorting feature is not working properly.  When I try to sort my library by file name or capture time, it does not sort properly.  The order of images is mixed and stays that way, even after reboot.  The file information is correct, the sorting is the only issue.  The library is approximately 6,000 images and I am also using a plug in with the Publishing Service feature.  Any help on how to fix this issue without losing my editing work done on the library would be appreciated.  Thanks! Dan

    Thanks! I'm trying to sort by capture time or file name, and neither sorts correctly.  file names 3450, 3451, etc. before files 0234, 0235, etc.  It makes no sense.  Same with capture time.  Times are accurate in meta data, but sorting is just wrong.  I'm using a ShootProof plug in that is only used for uploading files to the web. The issue is in the main library folder, so I'm not sure the plugin has anything to do with it.  Any sort I seem to choose: capture time ascending order, file name descending order, whatever, yields a different yet inaccurate sort.  The below sort is flagged, by file name ascending order.  This is the bottom of the list where it goes from file brigitte_terry_w6408... to brigitte_terry_film_0039... to brigitte_terry_w2825...  Regardless of the 'film' file, the w2825... files should be displayed above w6408.  Thanks for any help!
