Final Cut - Harddrive problem?

I was having some issues with FCP earlier today (certain playbacks were funky). I figured that there was some issue with my settings. However, when I returned to the project and tried to start-up of Power MAC G5, the start-up seemed to fail. The monitor never changed from pitch black, and the hard drive seemed to be going into overdrive (the fan got louder and louder). I unplugged the computer for fear that it was headed for some catastrophic crash.
I know this is sort of a hard drive question - but does this sound familiar to anyone? Any thoughts would be extremely appreciated.

Even if it's not the drive, it could be the CPU or some logicboard failure. So, Jim's advice is the best. I hope it's still covered under AppleCare.

  • Motion and Final Cut Pro Problem

I recently updated my computer and went with the new Quad-Core Mac. I had to reload the Final Cut Pro Studio software, and I've got a problem that is vexing me to no end.
I can import a Motion template (one that I've designed and even the Apple produced templates), but I try to view it in Viewer or when I place the Motion template on the timeline it won't work. Nothing visible on either the Viewer or the Canvas when I try to playback. I can right click and open the template in Motion and have the elements appear and work properly, but nada once it comes back into Final Cut.
    What gives?
    John

I find the roundtrip to Motion to be less than useful when there are a lot of layers involved. What works better for me is to export a movie using the same settings you're using in FCP and then import that. If the settings in Motion match the FCP settings, no rendering should be required. Unfortunately, you can't then use the "open in editor" function to fix anything... but must reopen the Motion project and export again.

  • Final Cut 7 - problems burning blu ray

    Hi
Got my final cut studio upgarde today. Looks quite nice. Having trouble to Share to a blu ray disk. Redering takes quite some time and during create disk the progress goes up to 60% and stops.
I use an LG Bluray burner with a SATA to ATA adaptor. No problems under MAC OS X or Toast.
    Any ideas or similar observations?
    Regards
    Rainer

My bad, it seems I did screw up the machine. I had some recent changes (ie: larger Harddisk, Studio upgrade and more) and besides the Bluray problem I did run into some other issues fe: not being able to shut down, start up problems etc. So I followed the instruction for the reset and voila the issue is resolved, FCP now even renders faster. Sorry I have to say that I am just a MAC user since one year and perhaps with a bit more experience I should have been able to resolve this much quicker.
But since the problem became visible juts after the upgrade I was sure it must have been coming form the software. I "shared" the HDV clip to blue ray, and after the much faster rendering the burning went fine.

  • Lightroom to Final Cut Pro Problem

When I compose a series of .jpg stills in Lightroom and then import them into Final Cut Pro 5.1.4, then apply cross-dissolve transitions, and then export to QuickTime, just before each transition begins there is a momentary "blink" to black (this appears in the QT output but does not occur when playing back the series within FCP). When I import the same files directly into FCP without going through Lightroom, the transitions run smoothly in the QT output. This suggests that there is something happening to these files in Lightroom -- does anyone know if this is a bug or is there a setting that I can change to eliminate the problem?
I am running Mac OS X 10.4.9 on a 3GHZ Mac Pro Quad, 6 GB, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT w/512MB, Apple Cinema 23" display. Thanks!

    Jan --
I haven't run into this. I've had no problem with Lr exports for FCP, either as TIFFs or JPEGs. I export from Lr to a Desktop folder with Resolution set at 72 ppi, and then import into FCP. Since I'm typically mixing stills with video, as opposed to building a slideshow, I don't apply transitions between all stills. But where transitions are applied, I've seen no flashes of black. The only thing I can think to ask is: are your FCP imports from both sources -- Lr and the other (where's it coming from?) -- at the same resolution, and is it 72 ppi? And are all cropped to the same dimensions? FCP can sometimes hiccup on too-big stills.

Its the same clips that dosent work everytime i had export with QM. I have tried to replace these clips but the same thing is happening. I am also expriencing the same error. Tried every solution listed so far:
    1. Switch off background rendering. Trash render files. Don't render. Export.
    2. copying the project within Final Cut Pro into another project
    3. remove the following folder: Library > Application Support > ProApps > MIO > RADPlugins > XDCAMFormat.RADPlug
Nothing worked. I try to export to Vimeo, YouTube, and master. All error right at 9%

  • Final Cut Pro / problem with old Audio Units effects

    Hello,
Has anyone encountered this problem in Final Cut Pro:
I had a set of Waves plugins, but I installed a new set of them and deleted the old ones + preferences and anything connected to them.
When I start Final Cut, the program is asking "Where is Waves plug-ins folder?" and it is searching for my old waves folder...
I tried to look in the manual and in the program's pull down menus, but there's no answer offered..
I can get the program running though, if i click "cancel" for each of the waves plugins that used to be in the old folder.
    Any experiences? Help much appreciated,
    Eero

Archiving projects would certainly be a good idea. Unfortunately, I am editing a project which is the collaborative effort of a host of volunteers who made hundreds of shots spread across events that need to be kept available throughout the editing process. So, yes, we are pushing the application past reasonable limits. Still, the project is good fun.
As an experienced editor (Media100, FCP4-7, Premiere Pro), I would have been happier to have been able to continue along the FCP7 path. FCPX is not my cup of tea, apparently, even though, by now, I have become rather familiar with the application. FCP7 was quicker, more stable (yes) and gave me infinitely better control. Or at least a much better "sense of control" so as not to offend any supporters or fans of the new application. So that's just my personal opinion.
But I must admit that it is impressive to see how easy and enjoyable Apple has made it for even absolute beginners in video editing to put something decent together without much explanation or training. I have seen this with a few of the volunteers I am working with on this project. FCPX certainly has its merits, therefore, but you are absolutely right in your comment. We must try to keep our active (and actually mounted)  "Final Cut Projects" and "Final Cut Events" folders small, setting aside those which do not necessarily have to be available  in separate "parking" folders. For the next project (in general language, not FCPX jargon), I will bear this in mind myself. Cheers.
    Best Regards, Huib

  • Final Cut Pro Problem playing and exporting

I am having problem playing and exporting in final cut pro. I made an animation in maya and used batch render to render a folder of images then imported the folder to final cut pro but it doesn’t play properly in the video window or even when I exported to quicktime. Do u know why?
Please give me your response asap.
    Thank you very much!

As the link that Russ posted describes, use quicktime player to open the image sequence and then do a save.  Bringing in an image sequence directly into fcp will cause extreme performance problems in my experience.
Describe the setting (pixel dimensions, color space, etc) of the original files.  One important question is whether there is an alpha channel associated with the files.  You may want to change the codec when you do the save in quicktime player to something more fcp friendly like one of the flavors of prores.

  • Final Cut Express problems galore

It's hard to know where to start with regard to problems relating to Final Cut Express. How about this: the 3 simple steps for importing a project into FCE from iMovie, as set forth in the 'getting started' book, result in nothing more than a message telling me that the File is of the wrong type. And that's that. Not much to go on there. Any suggestions? Most of the other problems with 'getting started' - and there are quite a few - have resulted in masses of 'rendering' issues, complete with hundreds of numerals, decimal points, and acronyms which are entirely meaningless to me. Having spent years on iMovie 06 generating lots of highly edited movies, and enjoying every minutes, I gotta say that FCE is somewhat beyond daunting. Is there, perhaps, a book out there that would be useful to the likes of me? Something that begins: 1. Sit down at computer. 2. Turn computer on. 3. Launch Final Cut Express, and so on?

Hello and welcome to the forum.
FCE is a totally different animal compared to iMovie. It does have a steep learning curve, but there are good resources available and good people here to help you learn it. Once you have the basics down, it gets a lot easier. Here's what I'd recommend for learning FCE:
Tom Wolsky's Final Cut Express 4 Editing Workshop book and Final Cut Express Made Easy training DVD
Izzy Video's Learn Final Cut Express 4 videos (online, free)

  • Final Cut Express problems with timeline

I have just purchased Fianl Cut Express 4 and have happily been editing my first movie but have come up against a problem
I have been trasferring footage to timeline in sequence 1 with no problems and I hva egot to 12mins of footage and " operation not allowed' has sprung up
I haven't changed any settings or anything- has anyone any idea how I can sort this
    Thanks
    Mel B

    Hi Martin
I am using Final  Cut Express 4 - I have had  ayear but have just got around to using it
My Apple is OSX 10. 68 ( Snow leopard) & Quicktime version 10- I update software regularly too
My video files are all downloaded in FCE through Quick time player and were all working fine and downloading fine into the timeline - sequence 1 - I have rendered 12 mins perfectly fine until yesterday when I came to add more video/ audio clips and a box came up saying  'Operation not allowed'  - I did not download directly from my camera into FCE as the video has to be streamlined into Quicktime movie which I then usually download into Imovie
FCE is reading the video/ audio perfectly but has stopeed me suddenly adding clips to the sequence project
I thought that perhaps I had run out of memory so I deleted some old projects from my HD to free up some space but hasn't made any difference
Hope you can help as I am very new to this editing programme
    Thanks

  • Final Cut Express Problem with Snow Leopard

When I export my movie from Final Cut Express using Quicktime Conversion settings it is taking up to 10 times as long to export than prior to upgrading to Snow Leopard. I have FCE 4.0.1. Mac OS is 10.6.2. This is the only problem I am having but it's a huge one. I use an external hard drive as the scratch disk with FCE.
Going back and doing a complete clean install of Snow Leopard is not an option. I have too many other programs that would have to be re-installed and no time for all that.
I have removed and re-installed FCE as someone suggested. No difference. FCE works find until export time. I use it for short on location video clips and need fast turnaround.
The movie eventually exports and the exported movie is fine. It's just taking forever. Did not have this problem on previous Mac OS.
I can edit the same video in iMovie and export in a fraction of the time but would prefer to use FCE since it has more options.
I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Frame rate is fixed to 29.97 ot 25 in FCE. What do you plan with 8000 frames/second?
HD1920X1080 is a frame size, what is the CODEC used (like H.264,MPEG2, QT animation, etc)?

  • IMovie/Final Cut Compatibility Problems

Hey, I have a video project that I'm working on. I was able to "dump" it successfully into final cut, but I cannot get the video to work with iMovie on my macbook. Are there certain steps I must follow to get them to work together? I tried exporting it as a Quicktime movie and that didn't work either. Thanks!

Hello and welcome to the forum.
This looks like a standard mini-dv camcorder, so you should be fine (working with iMovie is not always a reliable test). You'll need a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable; USB won't work.
The safest test would be to take your camera to an Apple Store if there's one close by.

  • Final Cut having problems exporting after updating to Maverick

Since the update, Final Cut will only export videos in a reasonable amount of time when Final Cut is open to the front. Otherwise a 45 minute video takes 8+ hours to export. Not sure what has happened or how in the world to fix this.

Anyone Please Help i need to send these Documents and can't. Thanks

  • Camera/final cut connection problem

I can't get my camera to communicate with final cut. I have a new macbrookpro with final cut 7, a new, calumet 4-9 pin firewire and a 2006 digital panasonic video camera that has worked with older final cut systems on different macs, no longer available to me. The firewire fits the camera and computer but the computer and final cut don't recognize the input. I've tried several combinations of connecting the camera, then turning computer on, etc. There's no other mac around to test the firewire on. Suggestions?

We've successfully used these kinds of cables for old FW to FW800 on our newest Intel Macs but not to a portable.
If the device does not show up at all on the Macintosh, you can look at only three possible failures: the cable, the camera's port, or the Mac's port. You should be able to test all with another Mac and a known FW device.

  • Final Cut Express problem after upgrading to Leopard

I have a Final Cut Express project file (plus all supporting files) on an external hard drive. This project has run successfully on 2 computers, a PPC running OS 10.4 Tiger and an Intel MacBook Pro running OS 10.6 Snow Leopard. After upgrading the PPC computer to OS 10.5 Leopard, it will no longer open the FCE file on the external drive. Other FCE project files work OK. The error message is: File Error: Access Denied.
Other files on the external drive open successfully (e.g. iMovie and iPhoto).
The Get Info window of the external drive did not have the checkmark in front of Ignore Ownership on this Volume. Adding the checkmark makes no difference.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
There are 2 variations of FX1: the USA and the european: FX1 and FX1E, like the HC1 and the.. HC1E.
SONY choose 1080i60 (1080 pixels height, interlaced 60 frames sec) for USA and 1080i50 for europe. It's relevant because you can preview your HDV clip on a standard TV sets (NTSC or PAL).
The Z1 model can handle NTSC and ... PAL, nice .
