FinalCutProX vs the old FCP

Hi
I have no background in the movie business but i anyhow get into the old FCP many years ago. I have been struggling and tried to learn the way to look at movies in the old days but i have not been so sucessfull. I have said to myself many times that i have to know how to make "real" movies to myself before i start with the old FCP.
Now with Final Cut Pro X i realise that this was true. Apple has made it understandable to edit movies for us that dont have the background in the movie industries.
I just downloadet it yesterday and can say much about it more than "this is how a Movie Editing program should work 2013." And it works with OSX 10.6.8 and that makes many Mac owners happy.
I will  dig into it now and i think i will end up with some questions here.
It was long time ago Apple suprised me in this great way after the 10.7 and iOS7 disaster,
Great work Apple
Btw. I found this great Tutolrial of how to use Final Cut Pro X at Izzy Video.

I know that some are happy and some are dissapointed. I think maybee i am to old to think all the new stuff is cool. Thats one thing and thats ok with me. But what i have problem with is when Apple take away functions and that there are so many bugs and problems.
I feel that I am the beta tester of some of Apples products and i dont want to be that. I am running a bussiness and dont want loose time and money because I have to sit and find out som function now not working after upgrading. Its Apples responsibility to deliver a product with as less bugs as possible. Apple is second to none so far but if this continue with new versions and upgrades 2-5 times every year it takes to much time.
Of course if people are using Apple product private and are intrested in computing and can spend much time with updates and new stuff its ok.
But i can tell you its a nightmare when a new update comes to either iOS or OSX when you have a staff with 8 iPhones and 14 Macs. When we ugraded from 10.6.8 to 10.7 our business was down for 6 days. Happely we downgraded to 10.6.8 and get our business up running again.
Final Cut Pro X  semes been a well written Application from start and i hope the FCPX guys keep ut the good work.

  • Sometimes I miss the old FCP Tracks

If my project was in FCP 7 it would have two tracks of video and three of audio (Ambient, Voice Over and Music).
Because of the nature of FCP X, these are somewhat muddled on my storyline.
I want to 'tweak' the VO a little, to make it snappier, so I selected all the VO clips and made them into a Compound.
Unfortunately, some of the clips have moved during this process - and because they are now detached from the video, it's hard to move them back.
Fortunately, I backed-up the project before doing this, so I'm able to go back but now I'm going through the clips one by one, because although I was able to paste attributes, this doesn't enable the audio Enhancements, so I have to go through them one at a time.
    (Or do I)?
    Andy

I'm feeling your pain Andy, I'm really feeling you pain!
I just completed the screenshot below last night, but when I opened it this morning to begin my export to ProRes, some of my synched audio was now somehow out of sync....
I can't begin to tell you what colorful language I was using....!
Anyway one lesson I did learn is that it's probably best we try avoid separating audio/video as much as possible. I know this shouldn't be the case, but with no sign as to when Apple is going to pull their finger out of their YOU NO WHAT! then I think it's best we begin to "simplify" the visuality of our timeline.
From my own persional experiance on this project, there is one tip I'd like to share. Once you have detached your audio from your video, just for sanity place a marker in the middle of your A/V clip which will act as a synching point. This way if they ever go out of sync, you can swiftly re-sync by aligning the markers.
Hope that ca be of some use to you.

  • The old FCP not opening thing

I am again faced with FCP not opening. I did have it working earlier today but the cable connecting my external HD popped out of the USB socket. Since that its refused to open. Ive tried to open without the external HD attached and ive used FCP rescue. In the past a ditch of the plist followed by disk utility{repair disk permissions has seemed to work but this isnt budging. Any ideas out there as to what has become corrupted? i treid also to open resetting the scratch at the prompt, changing them to the hard drive but that didnt work either.

    Thanks for the advice,
Ive used this drive nearly exclusively on my Mac and only recently started using it as a capture scratch for FCP. Ive used it recently to copy my i tunes folder to another second MAC but its rarely been in a pc and then only for music. I didnt consiously format it for a PC
The project file in question is on the external (Lacie 250). I can see it all and open it, the icon is on the desktop
Ill try the Autosave tomorrow, ive tried to open other projects from internal and external locations with no success.
I captured via firewire from a camera. To get this work done done i was thinking of moving the drive to another Mac but you think the drive is the problem?
Can the capture scratch from the lacie still be used? I omported files from my external drives FCP capture scratch using iMovie today no problems.
    Hope this helps

  • Can I use my old FCP 3.0 in current up-to-date OS 10.5.6 environment?

Back a few years ago I used FCP a lot but then switched professions and haven't needed it -- or upgraded it -- since. My version is FCP 3.02 full retail store version. Today I tried to open it to do a little tiny real estate project and it said "Need original CD". So I got the Install CD-ROM out, put it in and nothing happened. Decided to re-install the software by removing the old FCP 3.02 and associated files and re-trying the install process -- to no avail. Says I need the original CD. I can't get any more original than the CD that came in the big honkin' box from Apple!! So now what? Does FCP 3.0 just not work on OS 10.5.6? How can I even upgrade to a newer version is I can't get this one to install? Help!!

FCP 3 was the first crossover from os9 to osX. I sincerely doubt you'll be able to run it.
to upgrade to the current version of studio, you don't need to install 3 first, just have the serial number handy.

  • I need the "old" FCPX for my Mac book

Where can I download the "old" fcpX, I bought one two years ago and use it on my I Mac.
Now I want to use it on my Mcc book pro (an old one, MAC OS X 10.6.8   8GB Ram) if I travel

Not trying to police anything, but if you have a legitimate, licensed version of Final Cut Studio on your iMac, it was installed from a set of disks _ not a download.
That license allowed users to install on one desktop and one laptop, So those same disks should be used to install the apps, including the "old FCP" on your MBP.
I don't recommend copying the apps. It will probably work fine most of the time but far too often, problems arise down the line that would be avoided by a "clean install" of the apps; then – very importantly –successively  running Software Update until there are no more updates.
If you would like more input on this, post over at the Final Cut Studio forum.
    Good luck.

If we assume that what this guy says is true, and Apple is going to fix the things he says they'll fix, it still doesn't get rid of the idiotic "Magnetic Timeline". I can't imagine a single situation where that feature would be advantageous, except maybe for wedding videos or you're home-made vacation youtube videos.
I edit projects that are absolutely, positively locked in time. All the time. The magnetic timeline isn't something new. Lots of systems have that feature. The difference is: other systems have an off-switch!! Or rather; an on-switch! Because using this feature is unusual; I only turn it on once or twice, per project. And I might spend up to several weeks on a single project.
Oh, and another thing. Why would you even consider releasing a "pro" app, without having support for true HDSDI-output for monitoring and scope? No professional shop in the world will even consider using FCPX before they fix that!
I so agree, the Magnetic timeline is what kills it for me. And not just why you said. The non-assignable tracks kills it for me. I cut commercials and regularly have 18 video tracks and 12 audio tracks and each one is for a specific thing. Not only with audio, but video, like all texted on specific tracks so that a textless can be quicly and easily made. Without this, no matter how many features they add, the program will never work for me for video, ever.
What makes it ever funnier to me, is that the old FCP timeline was so good that Media Composer 5.5 added a function to switch to it, and now Apple has basically killed it. Looks like I am doing the $999 upgrade to Media Composer from FCP 7!

  • I have just upgraded from the old G5 to a new one, however I can't log and capture on the newest FCPs off my Sony Z1.. please help, deadline coming soon

I have recently just upgraded from my old white powerpc G5 which did not allow me to edit in HD and I had to down convert all my footage to edit in DV. I have  bought the newest FCP studio, and I had to order a new firewire as my new desktop does not take the old one that I had before. The new firewire that I have which is the only one that fits into my iMac from my sony Z1 is a Firewire IEEE1394-B (800) 9 pin to 4 pin .
My Mac : Processor- 2.8 GHz Intel Core i5
                   Memory- 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3
All my settings are set to HD and the ilink convert is off, and VCR is set to auto. Why is it not reading my Z1???
Please someone help me, i have been using FCP for years now and have not come across this problem before...

camera not recognised in system profiler just says maximum speed up to 800mb/sec
still says "unable to locate the following external devices:
HDV (1440x1080) 50i" in FCP when i try easy setup
Try a different cable first ... it might be a connection problem
    VCR HDV/DV- Auto
    Component- 1080i/576i
    i.link convert- off
    down convert letter box
    A/V-DV OUT- off
Bit of guesswork here - haven't used a Sony in a while - but try these:
    • HDV/DV to HDV
    • downconvert off/none?

  • Is everyone happy with the latest FCP?

I know just about nothing about editing video on a Mac, but about a year ago I was ready to make the jump from my dedicated editing appliance to Final Cut Pro.  At the time, FCP was updating to the new X version.
The reason I didn't move forward on switching editors was because I read among the many unhappy reviews that the one feature that I was most looking forward to using in FCP was suddenly no longer in the program.  In my older editing machine, it's called "quad-cam" ... being able to enter four videos at once, cue them up, and then edit "on the fly" as those you were switching between four cameras.  I don't know what it's called on FCP.
I also remember reading that Apple acknowledged that it should not have removed it and was planning to put it back in.
Does the latest FCP have this thing back in?  Can I now edit multiple video streams at once?
And in general, is the latest version of FCP back up to speed, after all those nasty user reviews I read when FCP X first came out?
Or should I still hold off longer and keep using my old machine another year?

Well, there are a LOT of us who don't like it... here's just one example of a thread of what's wrong with it.  It is LONG:

Multicam.  Not in the current FCPX.  Apple promised that support in early 2012.  So if you want to use the latest version of Final Cut...and you need multicam support...gonna have to wait.
    >Can I now edit multiple video streams at once?
Nope.  Well, not without stacking the old fashioned way.  But how that works with the magnetic timeline...?
    >And in general, is the latest version of FCP back up to speed, after all those nasty user reviews I read when FCP X first came out?
Nope.  Far from it.  FAR FAR FAR from it.  I doubt it will ever be up to speed, because Apple has said FU to all the pros that used to use it.  Apple now is making it for the low end pros...not the high end pros.  For those wanting more than iMovie (note the IMPORT PROJECT FROM iMOVIE option), but not for those coming from FCP (there is NO WAY to import a project from FCP 7 to FCP X...unless you go through other apps like Resolve or CatDV.  And then it is ONLY sequences.
    >Or should I still hold off longer and keep using my old machine another year?
Depends on your needs.  DO you use what FCX has to offer?  Does it lack what you need?  If so, use what you have...look at the other options (Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer) and see if they will suit your needs.  And see what Apple does in a year or two.
Personally...I am not holding my breath.  I'll use FCP 7 for another year, but moving on to other options.  Apple blew it.

  • Re-install Final Cut Studio 1 Probs with old fcp files and compressor

We crashed our G5 and reinstalled OSX 10.4.8 (Build 8N1430) and FC Studio 1 from original media. In the past (not now) the G5 was connected to the internet and was set to auto-update. I'm assuming and have been told by those working with the system at the time that both FCP and OSX were regularly updated online. We recently re-installed the OS and FCS 1. We have not re-connected the box to the internet; have not updated OS or App software from the versions on installs disks, have not re-registered any software online with apple.
When re-installing the OS, I archived the old system.
    My problems are:
    1) I can't open old fcp files (projects). These fcp files are projects saved both to an external 500G LaCie and saved on the macintosh hard drive. I cannot open old fcp files archived in the previous system folder on the HD. I get the message "General Error 41" when trying to open these files. I also cannot open old (pre-re-install) quicktime files made with old FCP assets.
I can open new projects and files saved since re-install.
    2) (probably related) Compressor will not open and gives me the message "Compressor quit unexpectedly..." I tried a second re-install of DVD studio pro Compressor package. I have a dump of the console crash log for Compressor below.
The G5 in question is currently Not connected to the internet and keeps trying to get online. We have Not re-registered with Apple via the internet either the OS or FC Studio 1 or any of the re-installed software. When I open FCP is asks to reg. Logs show the system trying to get an ethernet connection all the time.
Should I put the box online and register and update? Do I have to do this?
Are the pre-re-installed fcp projects "too-new" for the re-installed (older) FCP to read/open?
In general, I don't want editing bays to be online for these kind of reasons. Is this impossible anymore?
Is it know that Compressor and other elements of OSX and FC Studio can get into versioning issues with online updates such that re-install with cause incompatibility?
    Thanks,

    1) Use Software Update to update FCP to the highest version and you should be fine. Error 41 is saying the the project was created by a newer version of Final Cut than is installed.

  • Is there any way I can get final cut pro, the old version?

I want the old version because it's cheaper and I know how to use it better than Pro X... does anyone know where I can find the old version?

You need to look on Amazon or EBay, actually the price for a legitimate copy is likely to be much higher than FCP-X.

  • My editied soundtrack pro file only exports as the old, unedited version

I imported an AIF file that is the exported soundtrack to my FCP project. I had to export the soundtrack instead of sending the track directly to soundtrack pro, because the changes I made in sound track would not carry over to my FCP project. After I had edited my AIF file in STP I have tried exporting it as an AIF file to be imported into FCP, but everytime STP creates the file it is with the OLD audio. I have done this multiple times in different ways, but there seems to be no way to get my edited audio into my FCP project. Please advise. Thanks!

  • What happened to the old iMove HD? Bring it back, please

I suspect the reason it went bye bye was because it was cannibalizing FCP Express sales. But I really have no use for the new iMovie. A lot of useless effects and now this ridiculous Trailer feature. Forget the trailer, I wanna cut the **** movie! The old iMovie allowed you to do both. You could cut a movie with it, and you didn't have to learn FCP either. I can't cut anything in the new iMovie. Is there anyone else who's with me?

but it's basically aimed at people who just want to knock something together easily and quickly.
Yes You are absolutly right. BUT
When they done that - the forum fills up with questions on WHY isn't it Hollywood Quality ?
And this comes suprisingly soon. That's why me and others react with our spine
and blabing out the quality aspect before people burned away some tens of DVDs not
figuring out why they doesn't look as on the Mac screen.
Sorry - sometime more information than asked for - gives the Anti-reaction.
Enjoy iMovie'11 and if You by any chanse figure out - howto share the result in
a Professional Quality (as Your Camera put's in Your hand)
Please ! Please ! Share it with me - I love to share my "far from Master Pieces"
and at a quality I was used too.

First we need to know which one of the 9 different models of MacBook you have. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info (and then System Report if you’re running 10.7 Lion). When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.
The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody and the Late 2009 model 6,1 and Mid 2010 model 7,1 White Unibody have a Mini DisplayPort. The Early 2006 model 1,1 through Early 2008 model 4,1s plus the Early and Mid 2009 model 5,2s have Mini-DVI ports. Each would take a different adapter to connect with the TV.

I bought myself a mac book the other day and want to sync my iphone to it. However i have obviously put my mac book in a different apple id as i know pay for things i download myself, how can I sync my iphone to my mac book without losing all the music and pictures on it?  ive now put my iphone into my new apple id thinking this might help? ive also tried clicking 'manually manage music and video' but this doesnt seem to work, it basically says you have to erase your iphone to sync to a new itunes!
    HELPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

" how can I sync my iphone to my mac book without losing all the music and pictures on it?"
You cannot.  Copy everything you want form the old computer to the new one, then sync it.
it basically says you have to erase your iphone to sync to a new itunes!
Correct Iphone will sync, or manually manage, with one and only one computer/library at a time. Syncing, or manually managing, to another will indeed erase the current content.
