Finder crashes when accessing hard drive

Everything was working fine until I installed Font Doctor and started using it to examine my fonts. It would crashed when I hit this one folder. I tried it again and identified the exact font folder that was causing the problem (or so I thought). I restarted the computer and decided to get rid of that font folder, but all my fonts are on my main hard drive, and everytime I click on the hard drive the finder crashes and comes up with a default window, so I can't access it. I can access files/programs through applications or user, and I can access specific files on the main hard drive through the programs but can't get into the hard drive directory.

I thought it was the answer, especially since I had an old version of Stuffit on my system so I deleted Stuffit using the link enclosed. But when I did a search afterwards (after emptying the trash and restarting) it still showed stuffit things on my hard drive, not in the user or library folders which I can access, but on my main hard drive which I can't access.
I looked at the code and it showed some of the same things that the previous poster mentioned.

It did identify problems it couldn't fix with a lot of the files that were in my suspect folder (a font folder) but since I can't access the files directly on my hard drive I can't get rid of them.

Yet, while typing this, I just found a creative way to solve the problem!!! I was able to access the font folder in Bridge even though I couldn't access it otherwise. I deleted it in bridge and now things are working as normal!!! Thank God for Bridge. Amazing. Especially since that font folder has been on this machine for months, and the previous machine for years without ever causing a problem...

Finder crashes when accessing network drive

We have four macs on our network. When trying to access a volume on our network drive Finder crashes. The drive is accessible via FTP as well as From Windows Machines. Its only on Finder that we are having the problem. Everything use to work.
Im on an iMac, my Finder totally spazes out. Blinking off an on. On another system it just crashes. On the other two systems it just won't access the drive & Finder closes.Just started today.

hi RSB--
i would try a few things for this. go to utilities > disk utility and then select the macintosh hd. click on "repair disk permissions". also i would boot to the install disk for your current operating system and run disk repair. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214. another thing to try is to select any of the drives (just highlight, don't double click) and then press the apple and the i keys on the keyboard to bring up an information window. at the bottom portion of the window you will find your read/write/execute privileges. try to make sure everything is owned by you if possible and that you have full privileges. you may have to unlock the window to make changes. let me know if any of that helps the situation. Finder crashes when accessing my external hard drive

I have a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1TB external hard drive where I keep a lot of my extra data. Very recently, I can't pin-point exactly when, the hard drive has been causing Finder to crash, most of the time irreparably -- and by irreparably I mean it will crash and I'll try to relaunch it but it won't work, in fact it won't actually relaunch unless I then click the Finder icon (which had no dot under it), after which it will immediately launch into an "Application Not Responding" state.
The reason I believe it is the external hard drive is because I have two computers, both of which have the same problems when doing stuff with the hard drive, and neither have problems when the hard drive isn't plugged in.
Some weird things: I have been accessing an excel document on the drive and have been saving the document this entire time -- before I began to think that it was the hard drive causing these problems. It seems as though I could open that document and save it without any apparent problems. Same sort of thing when I used Ableton Live recently. I could access my sample library on the external drive through Live's browser and it would seem to work just fine. However, with Live, when I tried to save a project it would immediately crash Live (presumably because Live is trying to save via Finder or something?). I can't remember if Finder would subsequently crash or not, but I remember having terrible issues with Finder crashing around the times I would be using Live and trying to save.
I tried doing a Repair Disk on the external through Disk Utility, but after it was showing only the stripey progress bar down at the bottom and only saying "Verifying and Reparing Disk," for a little while I stopped it and tried to quit Disk Utility, only to have Disk Utility crash and now Finder crash as well.
Another couple of things to note. Finder is not able to copy something to or from the external, or move something from the external to the trash. It will be stuck at 0 percent progress and if I press the x it will say "Stopping" and never go away. However when I do that and then just unplug my external I immediatley get a "Disk removed improperly" dialog and Finder will work again right away.

Is the goflex a usb-attached enclosure?
Remove maudio, specifically that com.maudio.usb.fasttrackpro.driver. If you just move that out of /System/Library/Extensions (or if there is an installer) you need to reboot after adding/deleting kext's.
If no software was installed by you then somehow that external got that com.seagate.SeagateStorageGauge.plist installed in your /Library/LaunchAgents. If the maudio removal doesn't change anything then this segat launchagent is the next to go.

Finder hangs when accessing external drive

My finder hangs when accessing an external drive.
It is specific to a drive the I created on my TC disk.
That drive and TC work perfectly unless I mouint it and alter anything on that disk (I can read ok but writing causes a freeze.)
The writing that I do is always ok; if I trash or move something it always ends up where I wanted it after a restart.
The process looks like:
I drag an item to the trash (or another directory) and the progress bar shows success down to 3 or 5 seconds and then it stops (curser becomes a spinning beach ball.)
I can hear the tone of a successful transfer if I wait a little while but the finder is unresponsive untill I restart.
Once restarted I can check the external disk and the file transer (to a directory or the trash) appears to have completed without corruption.
I have repaired drives and permissions all over the place with no results.
Can I just say that I tired of constant unnecessary updates that slow my computer, rearrange my settings and cause crashes and other problems that have to be researched and chased down through hours of online troubleshooting. I would love to have thoroughly tested software and hardware that just works without the hassle of having to constantly tweek my machine to get it to work consistantly.

Are you saying you have this problem only with one drive, not with others?

Finder crashes when selecting home drive or dropbox

I got a new MacBook Pro today and the first thing I did was migrate a backup from time machine. Then **** starts.
Cant open my home folder or dropbox folder. Finder crashes.

the instructions in this discussion might help with Finder crashing when you try to open your home folder or your Drop Box folder — if you choose to follow those instructions, note that its side effect is to reset the view options of all of the folders underneath your home folder, which includes your Drop Box folder.

Finder crashes when ejecting external drive

Hi have had my Macbook Pro (i5 early 2011) a month now and its crashed about 8-9 times, mostly it happens when trying to eject my external hard drive, the drive won't eject, so I tried a relaunch on finder, then finder disappears completely although everything else continues to work, I can access the Dock and utilities, Finder doesn't show up in Activity monitor. I have no choice but to do a hard restart. I thought it was the external drive as I had it partioned to MS-DOS and exfat but I just did a format and now its HFS with an exfat partition. Anyone any ideas? is it my Macbook, Lion or the drive you think?

I have the same issue by the sounds of it.
I am on clean install number three and all goes well, updates, move pics and music from external and reinstall all applications from fresh but when I complete a backup of the machine t an external drive, Finder seems to crash at random poionts or when thte backups try to eject the drive. I am at the end of my teather!

Finder Crashing When Accessing Documents Folder

When trying to open my Documents folder, I click on Hard Drive, Users and then my Account folder. Finder then instantly restarts. I have run Disk Utility and verified/ repaired disk permissions. Also have Verified disk but have been unable to run the repair disk as needed. Somehow I have also misplaced my restore CD so I need options to fix this.

Tough without a Tiger Disk, but try fsck...
To use fsck, you must run it from the command line. Unlike using your mouse to open an application to do something, you'll need to type a text command at the prompt (#) to tell fsck what to do. The Terminal application (/Applications/Utilities) and single-user mode are two examples of command-line interfaces in which you can type such commands. To use fsck:
1. Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line. Hold CMD+s keys down at bootup. Note: If necessary, perform a forced restart as described in the Emergency Troubleshooting Handbook that came with your computer. On desktop computers, you can do this by pressing the reset/interrupt button (if there is one) or holding down the power button for several seconds. On portable computers, simultaneously press the Command-Control-power keys. If your portable computer doesn't restart with this method, you may need to reset the Power Manager.
2. At the command-line prompt, type /sbin/fsck -fy
(space between fsck and -fy important)
3. Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. OSX crashes when glyph hard-drive is powered on or off. [crash log]

Hi, I'm having an issue where a Glyph hard-drive is crashing the whole system if it is ever powered on or off when connected to the system. It was currently daisy chained through an Mbox 2 Pro when this happened, but this configuration wasn't an issue in the past. It happens very consistently whenever the hard-drive is powered on or off after being ejected. I tried to copy and paste the crash log this time around and was curious if anyone can help me identify possible problems.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Took it to the Apple store and had it back in two days. They replaced the logic board.
All is well now.

Finder Crash when accessing SMB share

iMac 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo.
When opening a particular share on an SMB server, the Finder crashes and relaunches. Does not happen on other shares on the same server. Happens for all users on this Mac. Does not happen on other Macs.
Have tried deleting finder.plist and windowserver.plist, and cleaning caches with Onyx and Cocktail.
Note: also crashes on some DMGs.
Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I have also tried Techtool and Repair Permissions.

Time capsule locks up when accessing hard drive

When I use my Samsung notebook to wirelessly access files on my Time Capsule, the TC locks up and I have to reset it. There's no problem when it's connected via ethernet cable. Any ideas?

Try and see if there is a different wireless driver for the samsung.
Use SMB names.. not apple names.. for everything.. ie short no spaces.. pure alphanumeric.. absolutely no apostrophe.
This is for TC, wireless and hard disk..
Fix the wireless channel.
Use WPA2 Personal security only.
Set the WORKGROUP correctly in file sharing.

G5 crashes when External Hard drive is mounted

Hi, I hope somebody can help me. I have a 500G lacie portable external HD that I use to back up my files regularly. It worked until today, I plug it in, I was able to save some files, and then the computer shut down. I restarted it and it did the same thing. Black screen. nothing. I have another External HD with its own power supply connected to the same computer and that one works. I tried plugging the Portable HD to the back of the one with Power supply and it shut down as well. Then I plugged it in the back of my 19" LCD, same thing. So I though that the portable HD was bad, I went and bought another drive, a verbatim, and same thing happen. I then plugged my lacie drive to another computer, a G4, and it works which leads me to think that the problem is in the G5, any suggestions would be appreciated.

I would stay away from LaCie. And their units can damage FW ports, or require what they call "resetting FW ports." To me it sounds like LaCie is shorting out.
Power adapters are also an issue.
Unplug Mac and all cables and power off for a few minutes is support to reset the ports, though in 6 yrs of using OWC Mercury cases I've never once run into trouble.
And consider adding native SATA - case, controller - though not as portable.

Hard drive is USB connected to Extreme.

Reboot the USB drive.. assuming it is powered.. or unplug and replug a self-powered drive.. (you should not use self-powered drives on AE before the latest model.. always use a powered hub).
Does the drive now appear in finder..
If not reboot both drive and the AE.. it should now appear.
If it doesn't work with direct connection try a powered hub.. that can help.

I have been reluctant to install iTunes on the new hard drive out of fear that I will lose all the contents on the ipod if I try to synch to the new hard drive.

No backup is a huge mistake.
You can redownload some itunes purchases in some countries:

- Transfer iTunes purchases:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
- Transfer other music by using a third-party program like one of those discussed here:

- Connect the iPod to the computer and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
- Restore the iPod from that backup
Note that the iPod backup that iTunes makes does not included synced media like apps and music.
