Finder dialogues not appearing with external HDD plugged in - 10.5.6

Hi there,
I'm having an issue with Finder when I have my external HDD plugged in. When trying to delete files and empty the trash, nothing happens because the dialogue box which usually appears to confirm the delete is not appearing. When I pull the HDD out the dialogue appears...
Can anyone help with this?
Thanks in advance.

Has been temporarily solved by creating a new user account but still do not know why this is happening?

I have a weird problem. My late 2008 Macbook Pro won't start with external HDD plugged either FW or USB... The screen stays white until I unplug it and then the Apple logo is there.
Anyone know any solution for this? Or anyone have the same problem

yeah I had the exact same issue with one of my 750GB externals too. I just left it for a while (about an hour or so) and it was fine..
I believe its so slow because the system is indexing the drive, which can be a very slow process if the drive is big, has a complex folder-hierarchy, and/or is fragmented.
Does the hard-drive appear quite quickly in Finder once OS X has started up? if its slow it may confirm what I've just said.

  • Mount not working with external HDD

So basically my External HDD is not mounting and i have tried using disk utility..... please help getting me to mount it please without reformating

Why did you start a new thread for the same question?
Your disk is dead and unless you pay for professional recovery help (which may not work) your data is gone.

  • Why i can't find the external HDD plugged to airport extreme. i already format it with mac OS extended (journaled)

Why i can't find the external HDD plugged to airport extreme. i already format it with mac OS extended (journaled).
Does only certain branch of HDD can be connected to aireport extreme?
I collect some information and i knew i have to partiion the HDD into Mac OS extended (journaled),
and i did so. Still the usb HDD cannot be found.
The other question is, can i partition the HDD into two sections, one of it is Mac OS extended(journaled) while the other is Fat32?
I want to share Fat32 section with another PC with windows system.
Thanks a lot if you have any suggestions.

I had tried to set up the connection via usinb a powered usb hub as the bridge between external HDD and the airport extreme. i still cannot found the HDD in the "airport utilities".
    This is my setting.
    1. Set airport extreme  as "sharing-single-ip" mode. The wireless network functions correctly.
    2. Connect external HDD to MBA. Partition it into single-partition with Mac OS extended (journaled).
    3. The HDD can be found if i plugged it directly to my MBA.
    4. Connect a powered usb hub to airport extreme.
    5. Connect external HDD to the powered usb hub.
    6. Open airport utilities.
         a. Select "airport extreme" in the sidebar.
         b. Change the "Disks" sheet.
    7. Cannot find an external Disk
    Is there any problem here?
Please help me. Thanks a lot!!

  • On certain sites, some lines have the lower half missing. Changing the font or its size does not help. The error does not appear with Iceape or Chromium.

On some sites certain lines appear with the bottom half missing, as if obliterated. Changing the font or its size does not help. The error does not appear with Iceape or Chromium.

I looks that the whole line doesn't fit in the container, so the bottom part is cut off. The usual cause is that a font is used that takes more vertical space, so any increase or changes from the font in what the website prescribes can cause this issue. I've seen web pages that were even affected by changing the minimum font size from none to 1 (!). If you do not have the font installed that the website specifies then Firefox will fallback to another (default) font that may have different dimensions.

  • Ken Burns effect with external HDD

The movie I am trying to edit is too big formy powerbook G4 hard drive and so I have it saved on an external hard disk drive. I am trying to "edit in" some still images into the movie and apply some "Ken Burns" effects but, once set, they will not appear when I drag them to the timeline or, if they are already in the timeline, the effect is not applied when I click the "Apply" button.
Has anyone come across this before?
Incidently, the ken burns effect works fine if the movie is stored on the internal HDD!!
    Please help.
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The suggestions already offered should have solved this problem, Andy. We're getting into "weird" territory now.
It would help to know whether the problem is with this iMovie project or all iMovie projects. Create a new project on the external drive and try Ken Burns there. Does Ken Burns render okay?
    1. If it renders successfully, that suggests the problem is with this project. It's probably not a software problem.
You have moved the project from one drive to another, so this may be a permissions problem, where you don't have permission to modify a file or folder inside the project. This can occur after moving a project from one drive to another. iMovie may think you don't have permission to add files in the way Ken Burns wants to add them.
The easiest solution may to tell your Mac to ignore permissions on the drive. Use the checkbox in the Get Info window of the drive to do that. Click on the drive in the Finder and choose File>Get Info. You'll see the checkbox at the bottom of the window. Relaunch iMovie and try again.
Another solution is to manually change the user permissions of the items inside the project. That gets a little complicated, for unlike a normal Finder folder, you can't easily apply the permissions of a package to its contents. Follow the instructions here, working on a copy of your project:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2811543&#2811543
    2. If Ken Burns does not render successfully in your initial test, that suggests a software problem affecting all iMovie projects, at least all projects on that drive.
Try creating a new user account. Re-boot your Mac, sign in as that user, and test a new project on that drive. If the problem goes away, that suggests a software conflict exists when you are the user. Rule out conflicts caused by third-party QuickTime add-ons and iMovie plug-ins. Their locations are described here:

Please let us what what you find.

  • FireWire Not Happy with external HD

I have 2 Acomdata external powered HD's for my photo editing and backup. They worked amazingly fine on my powerbook G4 but now on my 1 day old imac intel running 10.4.6 I plug just one of them in the firewire ports to transfer some data in the intel imac and the imac just freezes.
I tried re-booting and nothing happens. I unplug the ext hd and the mac runs perfectly. I then connect the drive in the other firewire port of the imac and the imac freezes just like the first time????
I wondered if it was the drive and then tried it in my G4 and runs the way a mac should.
    Any help would be great.

I experience the same problem with 3.5 inch FW Drives. The problem does not appear while reading data, it’s just while writing. The crash only occur with big amount of data.
I did the same check with my Mac Book Pro: almost the same result (it just does not crash, but the finder doesn’t respond and must be restarted).
To me it seems to be a problem with some type of drives. I have no problems with my 2.5 inch FW drives and no problems as well when using the USB 2.0 connection.

  • Windows 8 and Canvio Desk 3TB: System will not boot when external hdd is connected

    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Operating-Systems-e-g/HP-PAVILION-A6109N-amp-windows-8-System-w...
    Hi,
just recently upgraded to Win Pro on my HP PAVILION A6109N.  I also bought a toshiba canvio desk 3TB.  What I notice is that if I reboot my pc with the extermnal HDD connected, my system will not boot.
I have check my BIOS boot settings and the order of the boot.
I have tried disabling USB Legacy Support in the BIOS
I have reformatted the external HDD
but still my desktop will not boot if the external HDD is connected....If I disconnect the external HDD...the system will boot up ....
I am at a loss....*** scratching my head ***

Update:  The only solution for me was to format the drive as ext3 and plug it into one of my Asus RT-N66U USB ports, as most routers don’t yet recognize 3TB drives as NTFS.  It’s not much help to people who don’t have a router with this capability, and it also slows transfer rates to ~12MB/s.
Given the short length of the cable, your only other options are to have the 3TB Canvio sitting right next to you so you can unplug from a front USB port before each boot, or place it towards the rear of your desk and crawl under the desk to disconnect it from your PC prior to each boot.
It's a pity because Toshiba produce great internal HDD's, but my experience when it comes to external drives is they're simply junk.  I wish I had read the reviews before purchasing.

  • Does Time Machine only work with external HDD's and Networks?

I have a Mac Mini that I just replaced the optical drive with a hard drive. This second HDD is formated into two partitions, with one of them being for my Time Machine backups, the other a media scratch drive.
When I try to choose this volume in setting up Time Machine, I get an error message that says, +"Are you sure you want to back up to the same disk your original data is on?"+ The message goes on to explain that +"the volume you have chosen for storing backups is on the same disk as the volume containing your data... you should back up to a volume on a different disk."+
The volume that I have selected IS on a different disk than my start-up system drive and the data to be backed up IS NOT on the same disk as the disk storing the backups. System Profiler defines my startup HDD as "BSD Name: disk0" and my second HDD as "disk1," with the two partitions "disk1s2" and "disk1s3." Mount Point for the start-up HDD is "/" and the two partitions on the second HDD are "/Volumes/Scratch Disk" and /Volumes/Time Machine." These two volumes show up as options when I "Choose Backup Disk" in Time Machine, but not the Mini's startup HDD.
Does Time Machine allow the use of second internal HDD? I have an external HDD, but it has a clone of my start-up drive on it. Thanks for any help.

Chris, excluding the other volume could certainly be the issue since the two options that I'm given for a backup volume are both on the same hard disk. The start-up system HDD is not listed. Maybe the message is referring to this, rather than to the start-up disk.
Not until after I selected "use this volume anyway," did I get to the "Option" screen to exclude items from the backup. When I selected "+" I was surprised to find the other volume, Scratch Disk, listed along with the start-up HDD as being included in the backup routine. So I selected Scratch Disk as one of the items to exclude.
As V.K. mentions, the cautionary message is rather vague as to what exactly it is referring to. Thanks.

  • Lepoard freezing and crashing with external hdd

Long time ago I have upgraded even older Satellite M70 with SATA HDD (270 GB if Im remembering well) and everything was fine.
In my opinion upgrade with normal SATA HDD should not be problem. It must not be SATA II because it will not work faster.
I cannot say for sure but there must be some compatibility problem.
Lets see if anyone else had more luck with HDD upgrade on Satellite A100.
Have you checked this forum with advanced search option? Maybe you can find some older thread about HDD upgrade on A100.

  • Time Capsule and iTunes working with external HDD

    Hello all.
I have a situation I would to share with you and see if there is a solution.
I have a PC and a Macbook Air. I had a Time Capsule which had my iTunes library but the drive failed and I lost everything. However when it was running things weren't going great. Because the Time Capsule was a bit clever, it only spun the HDD when TIme Machine was backing my MBA.
This meant that I had trouble accessing my iTunes library because it wasn't always available. So I would have to locate the library on most occasions and on even more occasions iTunes lost the links with my media files and had to go through the time consuming 'Find files' process.
I was wondering if an answer to my problem would be to store all my music and other media on an external HDD (like the GoFlex). The I could plug it into my PC, then my MBA and if I wanted to make it avable to both I could plug it into Time Capsule and it would 'broadcast' it to both.
I was wondering if anyone had tried this and how it worked, Would iTunes see the HDD plugged directly into the MBA as the same as the HDD being plugged into the Time Capsule?
I look forward to hearing your suggestions.

  • Finder/Desktop not recognizing/seeing external Hard Disks

For 2 weeks, I've used two external hard disks for Time Machine. Both have Mac partitions, with GUID Partition table, and Mac OS Extended (journaled) format. Things worked for 2 weeks.
Then today, the Mac wouldn't recognize one of the Hard Disks, i.e. the disk icon does not appear on the desktop, and the Disk Utility does not see them either.
I thought the problem was one of the disks, so I attached the other disk, and that one doesn't appear on the Desktop or Disk Utility either.
Concurrently -- and I don't know if these issue are related -- I see that the iMac doesn't seem to turn on automatically when I press the on-button. Instead, I have to keep it depressed for a long time before it comes on.

A few hours later, it started working again. No idea why it happened, and no idea why it resolved.

  • Finder is not showing any external devices

I'm having problems with the Finder not seeing any external devices. First I tried to restart from a CD to run Tech Tools. Even though I held the "C" down, it kept popping out the CD and then restarting as usual instead. I gave up on that and tried to just run a backup to a Store-It drive (60 GB) hard drive by Hitachi, which connects by 2 USB connectors. Finder doesn't show it. Then to test, I tried putting in a small USB drive. Finder doesn't show it either. Any suggestions?
    Thanks very much!
    Satya

This is what I've tried so far:
    1. Check that the USB device is connected to the appropriate jack. There is a USB jack in the back of most keyboards, but it often only works with a mouse.
    2. Unplug any USB devices and wait a few moments before reconnecting them. You can often fix problems with your USB keyboard and mouse by using this method. Try restarting your computer if the malfunction persists after you reconnect the USB device.
    3. Test your USB peripherals in another computer. If the problem exists in the second computer, you may need to have the device serviced or look for an updated version of the firmware that supports your USB item. Check the manufacturer's website for these updates.
    4. Try different devices in the same USB port. For example, if your mouse if behaving strangely, see whether an external drive or an iPod is able to connect to the computer via that USB port.
    5. Disconnect any USB hubs that you're using and connect each device one at a time to your computer. You need to troubleshoot the devices individually to find out whether the USB hub or the one of the devices is causing the problem. Be sure to test each peripheral with a working USB cable.
    6.  Reset the SMC
    7. Reset the parameter random access memory (PRAM) and nonvolatile RAM (NVRAM) on your computer. Turn off your computer, then restart it and immediately press and hold the "Command," "Option," "P" and "R" keys on the keyboard. Release the keys after you hear the startup chime for the third time and your computer should boot normally.
I don't believe the controller is "dead" because I can still get some I/O, but no control.

  • Mac won't boot, stuck on grey screen if the external hdd plugged in

    as the title.
if i plug my external drive, via usb port, the mac won't boot and stuck at grey screen.
unplugging it, the boot process will continue.
the hdd is a LaCie mobile hdd
    any help?

    Hello jason(?)
It's a LaCie external mobiel hdd, formatted as exFAT. without adapter. take power directly from usb port.
i tested it on my iMac and it works fine. boot up as normal. the only difference is my iMac is on 10.6.8 and my Air is on 10.7.2
I tested on both USB port on my Air and the problem still persist.
the read/write speed is normal (bought it like a day ago).
another thing is I don't have this problem with my external WD drive.
One thing to notice is that, I accidentally left like for like 2-3 mins and it boots. So why the question now is why it's taking so long to boot? normally it just takes <20 seconds. Seems like it tried to boot from the external hdd, doesn't it?
