Finder freezes every 10min or so, necessitating Relaunch to continue working

I have a MacBook Air (purchased Aug 2013) and am using OSX version 10.9.5.
Processor = 1.3 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory = 4GB 1600MHz DDR3
Storage = 8.75GB available out of 120.47GB
At the moment I am sorting through photo files (.jpg) on an external portable hard-drive (Seagate Backup Plus 2TB), and am simply copying files and moving files between folders. Every so often (say every 10min or so), when I am copying a file, or dragging and dropping a file from one folder to another on the external drive, my mouse freezes and turns into a spinning ball.
The only way to continue is to hit Command-Option-Esc (Force Quit); I am told that "Finder is not responding" and I am then given the option to "Relaunch" the Finder. My screen then goes blank for a second or two, but then all the icons on my desktop re-appear and I can re-open my external drive and continue "normally" for another 10min or so until Finder freezes again.
Can anyone tell me what is going on / what I should do to find out more about what is going on / what I can do to fix it?
Many thanks! mmorsink

Hi ..
Might be corrupted Finder preferences.
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.finder.plist file to the Trash.
Restart your Mac.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Finder freeze - firewire hard-drive?

after upgrading to 10.4.10 I ran into a sticky issue. finder freezes every so often. what it is trying to do is to access my external firewire drive. it doesn't respond. but...all I need to do is to unplug the firewire connection to the computer, re-attach, and the drive is now recognized. any idea what is happening and how to solve? things we fine with 10.4.9

    Hello,
Your Finder is freezing? Try this. Locate this file: com.apple.finder.plist
It's HERE: /Home/Library/Preferences. Open the Preferences folder, locate that file and drag it to the Trash. Reboot. Your Mac will create a new preference file for you.

  • Finder regularly freezes every few hours

Before I begin, this is a video of what happens:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7k97XgwawY
The finder freezes up, most applications still kind of work. When I hover the mouse over the default menubar items {airport, time, spotlight}, the beach ball appears. Some of the other menubar items work. I ultimately have to force shut down, and reboot. I'm safe for about two hours, until it inevitably happens again.
I explained this all to the genius bar at Apple, and they said they would keep my computer for diagnostics. They said everything was perfect, and the hardware was running fine. They insisted it was a *software issue*, and that I reinstall Snow Leopard. I do a clean install, and back up from my time machine - the problem still persists.
I then attempted to isolate the problem, by killing one process/application at a time to see if it makes a difference. I've officially *tested every process* in Activity Monitor, and neither one seemed to make a difference. (Some processes I couldn't kill, and some would freeze the computer when I did).
So what do I do next? What could this possibly be? Anyone having a similar issue?
    WHO ELSE IS FRUSTRATED??!!

Ah! The missing information. Then, you need to resolve the conflict or corruption within the original account, normally between preference files.
Since the issue is specific to your original user account, you can proceed in two ways. One is to log into your new account, make a list of the preference files (plists) located in /username/Library/Preferences/, including any in the ByHost subfolder, log back into the original account, move everything not on that list into a newly created folder on the Desktop, log out and back in, and see if the problem goes away. If so, you can copy the ones in the Desktop folder (a couple at a time) back into /Preferences/, restart, and see if the problem returns. If so, you've identified the corrupt/conflicting one. Continue with all of them until isolating the bad ones. That'll save you the trouble of resetting preferences.
The second way is much more detailed and I'll not burden you with the steps unless the above doesn't fix the issue.

  • Finder freeze when opening folders of my Western Digital external hard disks

I'm facing a big issue. I'm runnin' Mac Os Lion, I realized a clean install a few days ago. Everything is going fine, but every time I plug an external hard disk on my MBP, I can see the disk appearing on my desktop or in the finder, and when I open it, the finder freezes, I have to reboot manually, or wait to relaunch the finder. My disks are in HFS format, used to work great on Snow Leopard no longer than a week ago... What is weird is that my time machine (external hard disk usb) works fine... Moreover, I can see the disks in the Disk Utility, I can't click on "verify permissions" but on "verify disk" and it says that the disks are fine... Any idea ?
PS : I could have erase everything on them and reformat, but I need the files inside...
    Thanks

    Hi!
    Here's a suggestion from BDAqua:
In finder, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes".
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra number on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a number, and reboot.

  • My macbook pro freezes every few seconds

    Hi everyone!
About a week ago my MBP started freezing every few seconds showing the well known spinning beach balls every time, even when running no apps, I've sepnt plenty of time looking for a solution, I've read this problem might be due to a physically damaged hard drive, bt I've tested it several times using different apps and it shows no error, I've read from another discussion about Etrecheck as a useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem, so I hope some of you guys can help me checking the log output. • Crystal Reports freezes every time I try to open a report.

Crystal Reports freezes every time I try to open a report. I feel like it has something to do with trying to locate the default printer, but Im not certain. Crystal Reports opens just fine, but the moment I try to open any report it just hangs. Please help!

My problem is very similar to this person's. I have 2 laptops with CR XI installed (same problem from original R2 through SP 5).  The old laptop is an IBM Thinkpad R51. The new one is an HP Elitebook 6930p. Both have the exact same software and versions of Win XP and network security.
If I try to open a report that has an "invalid printer" selected, it will open in the old IBM (with the message, 'This report uses an invalid printer. The default printer will be used instead'), but on the new HP, it freezes and I have to do a CtlAltDel to get out.
I've tried everything Don Williams suggested, but the only thing that is logged in Admin Tools when this happens is a Security/Privilege Request" with no errors.
Clearly, when CR in the HP looks for the printer selected in the report and doesn't find it, that causes CR to freeze.
Any idea what difference between the 2 machines could cause this?
This is a royal pain, because I can only be on one computer at a time.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Macbook OSX 10.7.4 Finder Freezing/Crashing Unusable

My Macbook has been slowing down progressively over the last week and is now virtually impossible to use.
Takes a long time to boot and when it does the finder freezes for long periods before refeshing itself and freezing again.
I have booted in recovery mode and run the 'Repair Disk' utility which finds no problems. I have also Repaired permisions which always finds the exact same cycle of errors with every run.
I would like to do a clean reinstall but have come to a dead end with ways to get the files off the computer and back it up.
If the computer is booted it is now impossible to get eh files off.
In recovery mode when I try to create a 'New Image' it always crashes or gives me an error so I was hoping someone might have soem advice on how to proceed?
The macbook only has USB ports so I don't think I can boot it in Command-T mode and use my other computer to get access to the files.
Run out of ideas here so would appreciate any help.

    http://gigaom.com/apple/when-to-reset-your-macs-pram-and-smc/
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
They show you how to reset the PRAM and the SMC
I followed the instructions and now my mac is working fine.

  • Droid Razr freezes EVERY TIME I do anything...ongoing problem for 9 months!

My Droid freezes every day. It has done this since I got it "new" under my warranty when the previous TWO phones of the same model did the exact same thing. They all freeze up daily. I usually cannot even answer the phone or make calls. Checking email or using the internet can take in excess of 10 minutes! I'm not exaggerating. This phone is so unresponsive that I am cancelling my Verizon account and moving to a new brand and provider.
So my question, "Which phone and provider has proven to actually work for you?"
I've tried and enjoyed the stability of Blackberry before making the poor decision to switch to Verizon.

We definitely do not want to see you leave the VZW family, mobilephonesneverwork. Since all three phones have reacted the same way, have you ever tried running the devices stock, without any added applications from the Play Store? There very well may be an application that may be the cause of a lot these repeated issues. One thing you can try is safe mode, to see if this helps stop these freezing issues. http://vz.to/1iu4gV2 Do you ever notice any patterns with the freezing? Please provide us with more details so we may all work together in finding a solution to these ongoing issues.

  • Finder freezes when trying to move files to external hard drive

Whenever I try to move files from internal hard drive to my external finder freezes it. I have over 5 TBs of free space on my external, so I know it's not a space issue. This happens no matter the size of the file. It starts the copy and then will freeze before it finishes. If I try to force quit and select relaunch it acts like it is relaunching but my icons never re-appear and the command bar at the top never returns. So I end up having to hard boot.
I just reinstalled the 10.5.8 combo update and verified both hard disks, if any repairs came up I repaired and then did the same with disk permissions....it's still freezing on me. I am frustrated because there are some files I'd really like to move to my external raid hard drive but I'm not able to.
The freezing happens if I'm trying to transfer files from a disc or an additional external HD. My internal HD is only so big and the external Raid drive is for my capture scratch on Final Cut Pro and I'm even having issues capturing to that drive. Everything wants to be on my internal HD and that doesn't work for me.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Sean Dale1 wrote:
Do you get any error messages and if so what are they? Do you have any problems copying files off the problem drive back to your Mac or do the freezes only occur when copying to the external?
No I don't get any error messages, the finder just freezes and when I try to relaunch finder it doesn't relaunch properly..all icons are missing and I'm not able to access the the task bar to properly shut down so I have to hard boot.
It happens only when trying to save files to the external, whether through drag and drop or within programs. I am able to access files on the external and copy files from there to my internal without problems.
Have you tried attaching this drive to another Mac and if so do you get the same issues?
I don't have another Mac to attach the drive to.
How is this RAID attached, SCSI, FireWire, SATA or what? How was the RAID created, Disk Utility or third party software and have you verified the integrity of the RAID?
The RAID is attached via SCSI. In an attempt to solve this finder issue I re-installed the drivers to the most current drivers available and in doing so updated any firmware....and there was no change. I was not the one who set up the RAID so I don't know how it was created. It's an Enhance UltraStore R16 and I've been using it without issues since January 2007 and this freezing thing has been intermittent for a few months now but now it's constant and annoying. I've verified the disk through disk utility but I don't have any software to check the integrity otherwise. Do you have any recommendations as to what software I could use to do this?

  • Finder freezes after dragging a file to the desktop

I am finding the if I try to drag a file to the desktop, it seems to move the icon there, but then freezes up... you can't do anything with finder at all..? I go up to "Force Quit" and select to "Relaunch" Finder, and it resumes normal operation... My work around is to copy and paste things onto the desktop, them trash the original file... a poor solution, but I'm getting by.. any ideas??  Dave

    I appreciate the update DJ.
Next I would verify and repair the startup disk using the Disk Utility. This resource should help you do that, named:
Repair a disk - Disk Utility Help
Print this help page so you can refer to it later. (You don’t have access to Disk Utility Help when you restart your computer in the next step.)
In the Disk Utility Help window, click the Share button , then choose Print.
Choose Apple menu > Restart. Once your Mac restarts and you hear the startup chime, hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys.
When the Apple logo appears, you can release the keys.
Click Disk Utility, then click Continue.
In the sidebar, select the disk or partition you want to repair.
    Click First Aid.
If Disk Utility tells you the disk is about to fail, back up your data and replace the disk. You can’t repair it.
    Click Repair Disk.
If Disk Utility reports that the disk appears to be OK or has been repaired, you’re done. Otherwise, you may need to do one of the following.
If Disk Utility reports “overlapped extent allocation” errors, two or more files occupy the same space on your disk, and at least one of them is likely to be corrupted. You need to check each file in the list of affected files. Most of the files in the list have aliases in a DamagedFiles folder at the top level of your disk.
If you can replace a file or re-create it, delete it.
If it contains information you need, open it and examine its data to make sure it hasn’t been corrupted.
If Disk Utility can’t repair your disk or it reports “The underlying task reported failure,” try to repair the disk or partition again. If that doesn’t work, back up as much of your data as possible, reformat the disk, reinstall OS X, then restore your backed-up data.
If the issue is not resolved, I would next re-install Yosemite. This will not compromise your data:
Reinstall OS X - Mac Help

  • 10.8.4 Finder freezes since upgrading

Ever since upgrading to 10.8.4, my MacBookPro freezes. At first I thought it was the back up device, but even when that is not running, it still happens. I don't know if it is just the Finder freezing everything or an application like iMail. When it freezes, no application will work, I can not click to quit any open apps -- I have to use my mouse RIGHT click to quit those apps or to restart or quit. A few times I ahve had to quit/restart with theON/OFF button on the laptop since I can not navigate at all. Sometimes, when it freezes I am in a Finder window and the mouse will scroll up and down and highlight all documents in the Finder window.
So, the mouse moves, but only works on right click.
I can not close any open window.
I can not quit any app unless I right click on the app icon in the app bar.
Quitting every open app does not help.
I have to restart the computer.
This can happen mulitiple times in an hour or just once every few hours.
Version 10.8.4, 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Any thoughts?

    Hey Chuck
There are a few things, one is to follow the steps in the article below to isolate if it is just your user or is it system wide. If it is user specific, the best advise is to back up the data and then copy it into the new user and remove the old one.
Isolating issues in Mac OS X
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1388
If it something that is system wide then you will need to backup and then reinstall the operating system. I have provided a link for that process.

  • Finder Freezing for many reasons

    Hello,
For 2 days now my finder has begun to freeze whenever i try to:
-Select a file from it, whether to open the file or attach it to an e-mail. (There may be more but these are the ones i know of for sure).
-Get info, whenever i press get info it freezes
These are what i have noticed to cause it to freeze so far, although there may be more. I have no idea why this began to happen and i can't link anything to it that i can think of. By freezing i mean that i get the never ending spinning rainbow/ loading icon.
Going down to the task bar at the bottom of the screen i can right click on finder and select "relaunch" and it will start working again, however it still won't have opened the get info window, attached the file to the e-mail or opened the file (although on occasion the file will open prior to the finder freezing).
Does anyone else have this problem or have had it happen and know how to fix it? It is basically stopping me from doing anything and i really need this computer for school.
Oh, and opening files from the desktop does not cause any problems or opening programs does not seem to cause it to freeze.

Still might pay to do this...
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), off the HD & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.
