Finder Freezing for many reasons

Hello,
For 2 days now my finder has begun to freeze whenever i try to:
-Select a file from it, whether to open the file or attach it to an e-mail. (There may be more but these are the ones i know of for sure).
-Get info, whenever i press get info it freezes
These are what i have noticed to cause it to freeze so far, although there may be more. I have no idea why this began to happen and i can't link anything to it that i can think of. By freezing i mean that i get the never ending spinning rainbow/ loading icon.
Going down to the task bar at the bottom of the screen i can right click on finder and select "relaunch" and it will start working again, however it still won't have opened the get info window, attached the file to the e-mail or opened the file (although on occasion the file will open prior to the finder freezing).
Does anyone else have this problem or have had it happen and know how to fix it? It is basically stopping me from doing anything and i really need this computer for school.
Oh, and opening files from the desktop does not cause any problems or opening programs does not seem to cause it to freeze.

Still might pay to do this...
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), off the HD & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.

Macbook pro freezes for no reason even after installing 10.8 on a brand new hard drive.
Tried to reset pram, smc, nvram.
    Tried installing new RAM.
    Tried installing new hard drive.
You should know that my internal drive is installed in a cheap external case and plugged in a USB 2.0 port because i am waiting for a new hard drive cable.all
Yep all good things happened to me...i don't know if all these problems are linked, ahh and also my trackpad is behaving very erraticaly sometimes, it's like it is possessed by a ghost. My computer is not under warranty anymore so i'd like to avoid a trip to the Apple store but i'm close to doing just that.
    Any help appreciated...

It's diagnostic software. It's supposed to help you find problems. I don't think anyone is making any software yet that fixes hardware problems.
    That said, the two comments:

would lead me to think it's the logic board. On older MacBook Pro's both the USB I/O ports and the keyboard/trackpad are fed out of an integrated USB controller integrated into the South Bridge I/O controller. On newer models, the USB ports come out of an integrated North/South bridge controller and the keyboard/trackpad are handled by an SMC controller, which itself interfaces with the I/O controller. All of these items are on the logic board, and they're all unrepairable.
...unless of course the "internal drive [that] is installed in a cheap external case" is itself causing the problems. Another thing to try might be a different USB port, if you haven't done so already.
I didn't know the price for Scannerz went up. I could have sworn I only paid 30-some bucks for it. Maybe it was on sale at the time. I don't remember.
    In any case, good luck.

  • I just noticed that I can no longer select photos out of my finder that are located in my Aperture/Iphoto Library.  I used to be able to attach photos to my gmail out of the aperture library in the finder and for some reason, no longer can.

I just noticed that I can no longer select photos out of my finder that are located in my Aperture/Iphoto Library.  I used to be able to attach photos to my gmail out of the aperture library in the finder and for some reason, no longer can.
I can't access these images except to go into the applications.
Also, I'd like to import my iphoto library into aperture, and move aperture library to an external drive.  I tried the import first, but there wasn't enough space.  Then I tried copying over the aperture library onto the external drive but it failed bc it said file was in use.
As it is, I only have 50gb left on my imac, and the aperture library is 150gb.  Also, I have over 10k images in both libraries combined and there are tons of duplicates that need to be sorted, and hopefully not messed up because I've organized most of them.
So in short, I need to know how to do the following:
-select photos in finder in aperture/iphoto libraries
-move aperture library to live on external drive
-import iphoto library into aperture library
    -eliminate dups but maintain organization
-moving forward i need a better workflow so that I import images from camera, and can organize right away into albums rather than creating projects by default and then creating albums so essentially the photos are in 2 different places, even tho they are referenced
    -live happily ever after
Thanks in advance for any support you can offer!!

If you're using apps like iPhoto or Aperture then they replace the Finder for managing your photos. The point is that you use the (many) options available via these apps for the things you want and need to do with the Photos.
So, simply, you don't select the photos in the Finder. I'll append the supported ways to do this - which are faster and will yield the current version of your Photos - to the end of this post.
-move aperture library to live on external drive
Managed or Referenced Library? Managed -
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit Aperture
    2. Copy the Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching Aperture. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
Referenced -  relocate your Masters first.
These issues are covered in the Manual and on this forum hundreds of times.
-import iphoto library into aperture library
FIle -> Import -> iPhoto Library? Have you done this already? If so are you trying to move the Masters to Aperture from an  iPhoto Library? Or Consolidate them?
-moving forward i need a better workflow so that I import images from camera, and can organize right away into albums rather than creating projects by default and then creating albums so essentially the photos are in 2 different places, even tho they are referenced
You can't. Every photo is in a Project.  They’re the basic building blocks of the Library.
You might want to spend a little time with the manual or the video tutorials. I'm not sure you've grasped the app  you've purchased.
The following is written for iPhoto, but about 97% works for Aperture too.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto/ APerture:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics. This is what you use to attach your shot to your GMail
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto/ Aperture.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto/ Aperture not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser

Hello .. I've been subscribed for ic;oud for 20$ per year and I found it useless for many reasons: that I can not disconnect my mobile while the uploading process and it takes long time for uploading my data .. Its not a reliable system that's why I need to deactivate the space service and take my money back .. Thanks

The "issues" you've raised are nothing to do with the iCloud service.
No service that uploads data allows you to disconnect the device you are uploading from while uploading data. Doing so would prevent the upload from completing. It is a basic requirement for any uploading service that you remain connected to it for uploading to be possible.
The time it takes to upload data to iCloud is entirely dependent on how fast your Internet connection is, and how much data you are uploading. Both of these things are completely out of Apple's control. Whichever upload service you use will be affected by the speed of your Internet connection.

  • ITOUCH TURNS OFF/ FREEZES FOR NO REASON!

my itouch that apple just sent me cause my broke turns off or freezes for no reason at all! why is this?!?!

I had a simlar issue with a fairly full battery. It'd loaded an app and assumed that this was the cause. Getting the iTouch to switch on was trial and error pressing the two buttons in sequence etc. I was pretty worried. That was a few days ago...since when I haven't been able to sync

  • My MacBook keeps freezing for no reason!

So I bought a MacBook about 3 weeks ago and I was super excited and I love this thing, but it keeps freezing for no apparent reason! I will just be on the internet, or listening to music on iTunes or chatting, and it will freeze. I can't get any response from the keyboard or the mousepad and if music is playing, it sounds like the track is skipping. I have to force shut it down by holding the power button down everytime this happens. Sometimes it will happen after 30 minutes, sometimes not for 3 hours. I took it in 2 weeks ago for a hardware check and it came up clear and they told me it should be fine and might be my wireless internet connection. I have a NETGEAR wireless router. So, I turned off airport and did other things on the computer and it ran fine for over 3 hours without freezing. I was convinced it was my internet. BUT.... I had my friend come over and hook up to my internet connection and we both were on our macbooks (she has the exact same model as me) and mine froze and hers was completely fine the whole time! I was really angry and confused, so I brought my macbook back in again last friday. They told me there was an airport update, so I downloaded it and it seemed to be working. But that night, it froze once again. I was so frustrated and didn't know what else to do, so I did a complete system reinstall to clear out any programs that may have been causing the problem. I was so sure that this was going to work. And it seemed like it did. It's been working all week without freezing. Until tonight. I was sitting at my desk, reading my email, listening to music on iTunes, and chatting on iChat. I wanted to move my computer, so I unplugged from the wall, sat in a different chair and didn't plug back into the wall. It was fine for about 2 minutes in the new location, and then it froze once again. I honestly don't know what to do other than just bring it back and ask for a new one. Has this happened to anyone else? Does anyone have any idea what might be going on? Any other suggestions? I just want this to stop!!!

    Hi Stephen,
There seems to be alot of threads about this issue.
I just put 'freezes' into the search and loads came up.
It sounds like you've had a bad start with your new MB.
Does it get extra hot before it freezes?
There is a thread about the heat issue and freezing here...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4710316&#4710316
Have a read and see if any of your problems are similar.
If it persists much longer I would get in touch with Apple again and get it sorted.
    Hope this helps!

  • IPhone 3GS Keeps freezing for no reason.

    Hey All,
I bought a second-hand iPhone 3GS 16GB from Wicketgadget.com about... 6-7 months ago, the warranty has run out from that website and I doubt it's going to have the original apple warranty from it. I don't have AppleCare and I refuse to pay for support, that's stupid IMO.
Anyway, my problem is that my phone tends to just freeze up for no reason what-so-ever.. for example, I'll be doing something and it'll work fine, if I were to lock it and the screen went black like normal it'd be fine until I try to un-lock it 10 minutes later by pressing the home button or the lock button again and nothing will happen, infact I have to physically reset it by holding down those two buttons for at least 30 seconds or more before it responds. I then have to turn the phone off once it restarts and turn it back on again normally or else it continues to freeze no matter what I do.
    I've tried fully restoring it,
I've tried updating it (it's running iOS 5.0.1),
I've tried everything I can think of.
It's had the digitizer and lcd replaced at least 3 times, including a new dock-charger incl. speaker set.
    I'm currently on O2-UK,
The phone is running iOS 5.0.1,
    My serial number is 880304GJ3NP
    Help?

    Could anybody help me please?

    * Try this.
    * Type in the address bar about:config.
    * Accept the warning.
    * In the page that appears, in the Filter box, type network.http.max-connections.
    * Change the value to 32 (which is probably set to 256 in your case).
    * Close the about:config page.
    * Restart the browser.

  • My finder freezes for no apparent reason, What is happening?

The beachball appears and nothing happens, the most recent occurance was followed by a blank startup screen with no log in window and the only way to get anything working is to do aa hard reboot, which I hate doing cause that must mean something is seriously wrong...

I would navigate to the 10.6.8 update combo page and download and re-install 10.6.8. It's possible your download was corrupted somehow. After downloading and installing the update reboot from the 10.6.x install Disk, hold down the Option key at the startup tone and choose the Install Disc. Choose the language then click the Utilities menu and Repair Disk Permissions (2x) in Disk Utilities. Then exit and restart the computer normally.

  • Laptop freeze for no reason

Hello, I have a problem that has apperead the last two weeks.. I own a dv6-3150 hp notebook. I have it for 4 years. A month ago I had some freezing and then everytime my pc restarted i and t would check the c folder for errors. So I took it to service where the found a failed hard drive and replaced it. I thought that this would solve the problem now as I have a new HDD.Also they cleaned the laptop from dust and now it doesn't make any noise. However, what is going now is that when I am surfing on the internet or playing an online games randomly after 3 or 4 hours of use my pc  will freeze cursor as well and the only thing that I have to do is manually turn it off from the button. I searched a lot on the internet to find any reason for this, but the only thing I found was antivirus programs, failed hardware , drivers and overheating. As I got it back recently from the service I surely have no hardware issues , a clean laptop and I can't find something that make this freezing to happen. I even went to power management and lowered the maximum performance of my cores to 85% so now it doesn't heat at all. I also made a memory test and my card  and hdd seemed fine. Yesterday it didnt freeze at all and i was happy. But today when I turned it on it froze on the start up screen! I read somewhere that It could be useful to press f10 and access the bios but even there it asks me a password that I do not have.  I really don't know what 's the problem. As I sent it to hp service 3 weeks ago, it was checked. The only thing that come to my my is maybe false installment of windows but I don't even know if that is cause eveything works ok. Also I changed my iantivirus program. But I have a fear everytime I use my pc for a freeze that may happen any time. Can you help me?

You say "it started with iMovie", so I assume that up until two weeks ago your machine was running fine? I'd start by uninstalling Iphoto library manager as you say it doesn't work for you anyway.
Next thing I would do would be to create a new admin account, log out of your current account and in to the new one. Do the freezes continue? Report back your findings please.

  • Captivate 4 suddenly freezing for no reason.

Hello.  I have been using Captivate for years.  I have a dozen completed modules developed in this software.  Today for seemingly no reason, Captivate (4) suddenly started freezing about every 30 seconds.   It doesn't seem to matter what type of edit I'm doing, I can only make one or two small changes and the software freezes up.  I have to exit and restart either by closing Captivate or ending the process through the task manager.   I don't believe it's the file itself, because this is happening on several different files... I tested it on four to make sure it wasn't a corrupt file issue.   It's extremely frustrating.   The only thing I'm trying to do is edit some existing captions... I'm not even trying to do something complicated with recording, pictures, audio or video.
I have 8GB of RAM running, and 176 GB of free space on my hard drive so it's not a memory or space issue.  The module files are under 15mb and under 30 slides, so it's not a module file size issue either.   The only new software that's been installed in the past six months is Adobe Reader X; which I've since uninstalled and rebooted - and it didn't solve the problem.  I'm running Windows XP with all the current updates and have no other software running except the Symantec antivirus.  I have exhausted everything I can think of to try to make this software function.
I checked for software updates and Adobe reported that there are none available that aren't already installed.  I can't work like this, and have 6 complete modules to redo.  Can someone please suggest something that might help?

    Hi there
You may need to clobber the settings file.
What operating system are you using?

  • Frame freezes for no reason

    Hi,
This must be a windows or java bug.
My application works fine, but from time to time when I open a AWT FRAME it FREEZES... (not the application but the frame)
I cannot click anywhere with the mouse, i cannot close it, and it does not show up in the Windows control bar. It is like it does not exist for the Windows OS and it doesn't accept any input from the mouse or keyboard.
It is a dead buggy frame. In some computers I have no problem. In others this problem happens, and the client that does not understand Java nor programming think I suck.
Has anyone ever seen this ????
    Sergio

    Hi,
Thanks for everybody for spending your time helping me here.
I cannot isolate this error. That's the reason of my desperation. All I can say is:
    - The frame shows up right
    - My application does not freeze, just the frame
    - By freezing I mean that it does not accept any input from the keyboard or mouse AND Windows (OS) does not show an icon for that frame in the control bar as it should.
    - I cannot close it, I cannot minimize it, I cannot type inside it, etc. It just sits there as an image in my desktop.
    - That's why I called it a dead buggy frame.
    - If I try to pop that frame again the new one freezes too, and it does not take too much moves to throw my whole application to the ground.
    - Again, it is just a simple frame, no multithreaded envolved, at least by my part.
    - It is not just with that frame, sometime other frames show the same behavior.
Well, that's it. I am switching machines (desktops), and I am praying that this bug stops happening.
I should have tried the scandisk/defrag process, but now it is too late, since that machine is gone. I will try that in this new machine if that problem reappears. But I don't even want to think about this possibility.
    Once again thanks for help,
    Sergio

  • When downloading itunes 10.5 it starts to load and freezes for no reason. Does anyone have a clue why?

When downloading itunes 10.5 on a windows 7 laptop it just freezes at about 98% for no apparent reason.  Please help?!

I agree with you that something needs to change.
I am a long time Macintosh user and Apple fan. I was using iTunes to download video podcasts to my iPod for a while before I realized that the list all buttons list all of the "Featured" podcasts only. I had no idea how much content was out there.
I also take issue with the listings on iTunes. There is a Tiger Woods podcast that is killing all the other podcasts in terms of popularity. The problem is, it isn't really a podcast. It is simply a commercial that is in iPod format. This hardly deserves the spot in ITMS that it has. It is not updated or new, but it is listed as new and notable. As if Tiger needs more press.
It seems that the big money podcasts get billing and premiere placement in the store. I hope they give some sort of fair time in the spotlight to podcasts that are regularly updated.

  • IMac keeps freezing for some reason?

Every time I try to watch a video or play an online game, (anything that moves) it freezes every 10 seconds. Even typing this message just now it froze for a second. What is going on? It isn't my internet because I have reset it many many times. Can anyone PLEASE help me?
P.S. It's a newer iMac, I bought it last year. I also just recently installed Snow Leopard. I think that's the problem? (By the way it froze twice more while typing this).

    HI Nick,
I assume you are using the Safari browser.
Try uninstalling the Flash Player Plugin, then reinstall it.
First, uninstall the Flash plug in you have now.
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157
Next, download and install the most recent version of Flash Player Plugin here.
    http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash
Quit any open applications. Launch Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities). Select Mac intoshHD i the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab and click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's fished, from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. They can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" .. you're done.
Do Safari Maintenance about once a month.
