Finder freezing under Update 10.5.5 in connection with pdf-Files

Since the update to 10.5.5 I have this problem:
My Mac will freeze ever so often when viewing pdf-files or even the directory containing such files.
MY OBSERVATIONS
* Problem inked to 10.5.5
* Occurs when opening pdfs or simply opening directories with pdfs
* The freezing is progressive: at first I might be able to view like 5 pdfs, then the mac starts to freeze when opening just one. At last it freezes when simply opening the directory.
MEASURES TAKEN
* Anti-Virus Check (Norton v11)
* Disk utility repairs
* Disk Warrior full repair
* Complete formatting of HD and complete reinstallation
* MAC Hardware test tool
* OnyX full repair suite
* TinkerTool System full suite
RESULT:
* 10 nights of work, lots of frustration an settings lost, functionality not reestablished
MY CONFIGURATION
Mac: Dual 2.3 Ghz PowerPC G5
OS: 10.5.5
Software: Only original Apple Software and MS Office installed (asside of above ment. SW)
The files are now - after reinstalling the System - on an external HD
I wonder how long it will be till Apple publishes a statement and/or workaround.
My hopes are on you guys!

I had similar weirdness with the finder freezing or getting the spinning rainbow wheel of death associated with pdfs and various applications that utilize that file type. For me, it did not have to do with OSX 10.5.5. I finally narrowed it down to the updated version of Acrobat Professional 6.0 I was using, which works and is likely not compatible with an intel based mac, but who want to shell out another few hundred bucks. It was not opening after it was updated, stating the international language preferences were not selected. But i was able to open pdfs using preview, adobe photoshop etc. So I deleted the updated Acrobat Professional 6.0, and reinstalled the original and it works. Also if the pdfs are really huge and multiple pdfs are open at once, they and use alot of different images, fonts etc. It places huge demands on your ram, processor etc. causing the application to freeze as it searches your hard drive. Maximizing your RAM will help. Repairing permissions using disc utility from the hard drive (not the OSX install dvd) may help. Sometimes when I click on the desktop the finder does not open, so i relaunch from the force quit in the apple menu. It may have something to do with the applications you are using to work on pdfs. Hope this helps.

    Chester31,
Thank you very much for sharing your file with us!  Now that we are able to reproduce the problem at our end, you may stop sharing the file on Acrobat.com.
Do you know when this problem (for not being able to add new highlight/strikeout/underline) has started?  Did you update your iOS from 7.x to 8.0 recently?
We will continue investigating the problem and let you know what we find.
Thank you again for your help.

  • Firefox freezes when opening a window with PDF files, etc., yet it works perfectly when using explorer as browser.

I think Firefox mozilla is having issues with Adobe reader. It frequently crashes. I think this may be why my computer freezes when pulling up a PDF file or other text windows, yet, everything works perfect when using Explorer as my browser. It is so frustrating using Mozilla because it gets stuck when opening windows which require pulling up certain types of texts or applications, then I have to wait forever, or, reboot, and once in a while it gets so stuck that I have to take out battery and remove all power sources then start from scratch, and set my computer back to all settings previous to failure. Like I said, this only happens with Mozilla, all other browsers work perfectly well, but I love my Mozilla and it is my preferred browser. Please help. Thanks so much,
    susan

    Hi Susan,
The Adobe plugin in Internet Explorer is a bit different from the one in Firefox, however they're all made by Adobe and they usually come with Adobe Reader.
When you open a PDF file in Firefox, it "calls" Adobe Reader to help it read the file. In this case, the Adobe Reader takes over, and it is responsible for freezing your browser.
I suggest you try the last 4 solutions presented on the [[Opening PDF files within Firefox]] (start with "Re-install the plugin" through "Re-install Adobe Reader").
    Good Luck :D

  • Software update causes iPhone to not connect with iTunes

I did a software update this morning. The three updates were: "iDVD Update", 'Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update", and "Safari". After that my two iPhones (one is my wife's) can not connect to iTunes, nor iPhoto. I switched cables and the connection port with no success. Had to be the updates as there is nothing else different that I did. And yes, I restarted both the computer and iPhones, several times. Need help!

I had the same problem. My update was the new itunes along with your listed updates and my iphone takes over 3 hours to sync if it actually syncs at all. I get the spinning color wheel and can't use the rest of my computer. iPhone 3G, macBook Pro with all the available updates. Please help.

  • Issues with .pdf file in Finder

Could anyone suggest a solution to my problem?
    Problem:
A .pdf file (lecture note) size about 1.5 MB. This file seems to be 'printed' from a powerpoint file. It is heavy on colors and diagrams. When 'previewed' in Finder (not QuickLook), spinning rainbow wheel appears and Finder Not Responding thereafter.
The file only poses problems when in finder preview, no problems with quicklook or opening up in Preview or Acrobat Reader.
    Things tried:
Restarted, Logged out. All the sane things that I could think of so far, but it doesnt help. I tried on some other .pdf that are of the same size or larger, but they did not have the same problem, seems to be this file? Or is it?
Thanks for any solution in advance! I can provide the file if you want to see if it does the same thing on other machines/OS/configuration/situations.

You say it opens in Preview: have you tried just doing a "Save as.." out of Preview? Does the resaved file still cause a problem for Finder? Does it contain the same info? If it will resave and work, you could then trash the original.

  • How to find which port on the switch that it connected with Mac address?

    Hi,
I am trying to find which port of the switches it connected to thru mac-address?
I am able to get the mac-address from the ip address when i do
"show ip dhcp binding snooping" at the core switch.
But when I move on to the Edge switch to check which PC with this Mac address connected to the port,i returned with no result.(onli trunk port result)
I use sh ip arp | inc 000d.60cb.445d
but didn't give me which port it connected to.
    How to solve this problem?
    thanks!
    KL

    Hi KL,
If you are already on the edge switch you can run a command "sh mac-address-table address " and it will give you the port number.
Incase you get a port which is a trunk port that means the end device does not exist on this switch and exist on some downstream switch. So you can just find out the ip address of the downstream switch with "sh cdp neigh detail" command and connect to that downstream switch and then again issue the command "sh mac-address-table address " and check the port number and follow the above steps till the time you get the switch on whcih end host is connected.
HTH, if yes please rate the post.

  • Finder freezing after update

My new macbook has started having problems ever since I installed the latest recomended update for Macbook Pro's with retina!
I cannot open any folders or files in the finder... trying to find files or open a new window just causes finder to go off and not come back (stop responding).
I'm having to "ctrl + alt + esc" to get out of the loop, but it is seriously limiting my ability to use the machine!
    HELP!

I thought this was stored in the library under preferences
It is (in the home folder in both OS X 10.7 and OS X 10.8).  ~library>preferences.
    Barry
P.S.  That is not a cure all, but it cannot hurt.
P.S. #2  I strongly recommend that people NOT use terminal commands unless they are completely comfortable with the arcane UNIX commands.

  • I want to edit the application associated with pdf files, but the pdf file type is not available on the Applications tab under edit preferences. How do I add file types?

I am running Firefox 5.0 (Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu canonical - 1.0) under Kubuntu 11.04.

Thanks jscher2000, I tried your suggestion, but no joy (as expected). None of the extensions were .bin, and in fact, I can't find a single listing for handling the .bin extension in the entire (unfiltered) list.
That's why I'm so confused. Where is Firefox getting the name "VLC.bin (default)" from in the first place?
cor-el, I checked out the link that you posted.
I don't have an entry for "browser.download.pluginOverrideTypes" and the entry "plugin.disable_full_page_plugin_for_types" was empty (default setting).
My bad, but I forgot to mention in my first post that I had also tried renaming the mimetypes.rdf file in my "Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxx.default\" to .old to no avail.
Firefox created a new, almost empty file, but it didn't change the behavior for .bin files. I removed the new file and put the old file back in place after determining that clearing the file did not help, since I am otherwise happy with my current file-type options.
However, since the option to "Always perform this action" is grayed-out, I am looking into the possibility that the website is sending a misconfigured MIME type or is assigning "Content-Disposition: attachment" to the download. What's odd, though, is that I've never had problems getting binary files from the site in the past, and the problem started when the VLC player was installed.
I'll post back after I check into the server header data.

  • I have been using firefox, then all of a sudden it will not connect says site is busy. I did an update but still will not connect with site

I have been using firefox for a while, then it would not connect, I have change nothing on my computer. I double checked the firewall and browsers .
I downloaded another exe and it still will not go to the page.
    What can I do

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

    Hi All,
I need your help for the following scenario.
I'll transfer data from 13 tables of SQL Server 6.5, into a XML

This 70 lakh records will be shared by 11 tables in Oracle 8.1.6

record each. How to transfer this XML file data into those 11
tables? Is any tool available to do so?
And before inserting that 6.5 lakh rows into a table, i need to
clear up that table (means delete all the existing data). In

Using SQL*Loader you can specify to clean up the old data before
insertion, but not sure about the rolling back to the deleted
    rows after insertion failure.
You can write a small application based on XSU to finish this
task. But note about the commit size. If you data volumn is

need to divide the data into small pieces so as to avoid running

  • Why my Mac freeze when PDF files in the FINDER

I have that problem since yesterday: when I try to either select or even just view the content of a folder with PDF files in it, my Mac freeze progressively after few seconds. Then, the only solution is to force quit by holding the power button. Really annoying! What should I do? My computer is only 4-5 months old.
I've uninstalled Acrobat, verified all my drives with Disk Utility, repaired my permissions and emptied my library cache. Nothing... Could it be the recent Firefox update ( yesterday )? Until 24 hours ago, everything was fine.
    Thanks for the help!

Since this is happening in the Finder... try this:
Locate this file: com.apple.finder.plist /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot.
If that didn't do the job, do a Spotlight search and look for any .pdf files you have downloaded and saved and DELETE them. Somewhere in your system you have a corrupted .pdf file.
And, check the hard disk. Even if you've done this already, try again:
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
Insert your Mac OS X Install disc in your computer’s optical drive or an optical drive connected to your computer, and then restart your computer. When you hear the startup tone, hold down the C key until you see the progress indicator, which looks like a spinning gear.
Follow the onscreen instructions until the menu bar appears with the Utilities menu in it, choose Utilities > Disk Utility, click First Aid, and then click Repair Disk. When it's finished, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Disk. In the Startup Disk window select MacintoshHD 10.x.x and click Restart.
Also, the best way to have Apple be aware of these issues is to send them crash reports. Here's how to do that:
    Reporting problems to Apple
When an application quits unexpectedly, you see a dialog that gives you the option to submit a report about the problem, called a “bug report,” to Apple.
When you submit a bug report to Apple, it includes information about the problem and your computer’s configuration. Many problems are directly attributable to the hardware and software configuration.
No personal information is gathered about you or your computer. No information that can be used to identify your computer is sent, such as volume names, network addresses, or hardware addresses. For more information, click the link at the bottom of the page to see Apple’s customer privacy policy.
To submit a bug report to Apple:
    Connect to the Internet.
In the dialog that appeared when the application quit, click the Submit button.
Type a description of what you were doing when the application quit. List the applications that were open when the problem occurred, and any steps or hints to reproduce the problem.
Review the report in the Crash Report window.
Click “Send to Apple” to submit the report.
You won’t receive an immediate response, but Apple greatly appreciates your taking the time to submit a bug report. As the software is revised, these reports are reviewed to help improve the software.
Your computer also records details about the problem in a log file. You can use log files to troubleshoot problems with an application, or you can send a log to the application’s developer if it is requested.
You can view the logs in Console, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.

  • Finder freezing on folder display (icon draw issue)

I've got a weird issue with one computer. MacPro totally loaded (12-core, 16GB RAM, RAID card w/three drives as RAID5). Fast as anything as you might expect.
Problem is with the Finder freezing when opening folders. It can happen with any folder, but it's inconsistent. Computer is used by a photographer so most images are image files (jpeg, tiff, Canon raw). I suspect the issue is with icon drawing and/or some cache related to that. I have, however, seen this happen with folders that contain nothing but other folders.
Specifically, the user will open a folder. The Finder will begin to draw its icon previews. Most of the time no problem. Some of the time the Finder will freeze midway through the drawing (some icons remain as generic icons at time of freeze). Activity Monitor says Finder is at 2400%, which is a bit startling unto itself. Only way out is to restart the Finder.
To test, I wrote an AppleScript which opens and closes a large series of folders (roughly 50 different folders). I'm able to duplicate the problem using this script. It's a different folder each time, and one interesting thing is if the script makes it through all 50 folders fine once, it'll do it fine forever until the next reboot (I stopped it at 2000 runs on two occasions). I can post the script if anyone is curious.
The system is pretty clean, Photoshop and a few other regular apps, nothing tricky. I cleaned all the caches with Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner. I repeated the test with a freshly created user on the same system, with the same results. Repaired permissions, ran DiskWarrior, etc. Ran the extended hardware test from the OS DVD, no trouble.
I thought it might be a Quicklook think, but I don't see any third-party plugins at all.
I have not done an OS reinstall, as I'd like to actually solve this problem. If I run out of ideas I'll do that.
Looking for any thoughts or suggestions.
    Thanks,
    Mitch

I believe I've solved this problem. Disabling the processor's hyperthreading was the solution.
To do this, I issued this command in the Terminal:
    sudo nvram SMT=0
    then immediate rebooted.
Finder hasn't frozen since. I've rebooted and run my test script several times.
Looks like Hyperthreading is an issue in many circumstances, including specifically the preview of large TIFF files. There's a developer tool called Processor.prefpane (installed with XCode) which can temporarily disable it. That's how I determined it was the cause. The above terminal command is permanent (the prefpane's settings reset to default after reboot).
I'll update here if I run across additional information.

  • Lose Apple TV wireless connection with latest Apple TV update

I purchased a new IPhone yesterday and tried to set up the Apple Tv software to use the Iphone as a remote. This involved updating to the Latest Apple TV version 2.1. However once I carried out the update the Apple TV lost connection with the Wireless network and displayed an ip address 169.xxx.xxx.xxx . I manually set up the system to the 192.168.1.xxx subnet and the Apple TV showed up in the Router client table but I wasn't able to ping the Apple TV from the router and the Apple TV had no connection to the internet and would not appear in Itunes devices.
I reloaded itunes and reset the Macbook pro etc but no success. I then restored the Apple TV to factory settings and it reconnected on version 1.0 . I then tried a further software update on the Apple TV to 2.1 and once again I lost my connection to the Local wireless network. Same DHCP address 169. xxx etc.
Can anyone help me to either get the Apple TV to connect under 2.1 or tell me if it is possible to restore the Apple TV to the previous 2.0 software which at least gave me the lastest updates without the iphone remote facility.
Apple TV worked fine on Version 2.0
Really getting anger with the continual crashes and bugs on the software updates now.
    Mac OS X (10.5.4) MacBookPRO
    iTunes version 7.7.1 (11)
    Apple TV (2.1)
    Appreciate any assistance

Ok Guys here's what i found.
*1. Disconnected ethernet wired connection, soft reset apple tv.*
ATV Continued to work and kept ip address 192.168.1.10x
*2. Moved Apple Tv unit back to original location and did a power reset.*
ATV Continued to work and kept IP address 192.168.1.10x
Tried movie trailers etc. everything still functional could see in Itunes devices etc.
    *3.Power reset router*
ATV Continued to work and still had correct IP address
*4. Powered down all network devices including the Router. then powered up router and brought up all devices individually , bring up the Apple Tv last*
Router DHCP client list showed Apple Tv with IP address 192.168.1.104
Apple Tv network setting showed DHCP ip address as 169.xxx.xxx.xxx
Apple TV could not see internet and I couldn't ping the apple TV from the router
*5. Plugged in the Ethernet cable to Apple Tv and Router*
Network setting on Apple tv instantly changed to ethernet and showed correct IP address 192.168.1.104 from DHCP on Router. Unit burst into life and connected to Internet.
*6. Disconnected ethernet cable from Apple TV.*
Network settings showed wireless network but no information on IP addresses etc just had N/A
Did a soft reset and all parameters appeared and they were now correct with IP address 192.168.1.104. apple tv once again started to work and showed up in Itunes.
    7. Final config is Wireless and things seem to be working but it would appear that when I intially set up the apple tv under 2.1 I have to first connect via ethernet to get the apple TV to configure with the correct IP address on the Wireless network otherwise it auto configures with a 169.xxx.xxx.xxx IP address and doesn't appear to be connecting to the network.
Please let me know if anyone else sees the 169.xxx.xxx.xxx address when they initially connect to the wireless network with ATV version 2.1.
I would like to understand whether I have a unique problem or if others are seeing the same thing.
Hope this helps , at least I seem to be able to use 2.1 and the iphone remote facility now , even although I have to mess about with the network setting to start with.
Interested to see what anyone else comes up with
    Cheers
    Alistair
