Finder not displaying right disk space????/

Hi,
In Finder, the available hard drive space seems to be wrong.
My system:
MacBook
2 gig of RAM
OS 10.4.7
I have run both WhatSize and OmniDiskSweeper. These apps say I have used 11.3 gigs of space.
But according to finder I have used 27 gigs of space.
Where is did that 16 gigs go?
If anything, when I installed Tiger I did a "lean" version with less programs, printer drivers etc.
Also, my "all files" back up on my external likewise shows only around 10 gigs used as back-up files.
I am now pretty much convinced (from the two apps and my external space used for back-up) that Finder is the problem -- not invisible files, virtual files etc. I even logged on as the root to see if any invisible files were being shown. Nope -- same view.
I should add that I also looked in actyivity monitor and things did not seem to add up. It said 27 gigs used, yet did not show anything suggesting that much should have been used?
What can I do? I really do not want to "lose" 16 gigs just like that.

"Not Enough Free Disk Space" error message, but Finder shows plenty of disk space available

Apologies if this is a double post, but I have been searching all over and can't seem to find this issue in the forums.
I have a 256GB Macbook with a fresh copy of Lion installed, am going through the process of migrating files back over, after which I have approximately 125GB free. However, whenever I go online and try to download any type of file (PDF, sofware install files, etc.), an error message displays saying:
Safari could not download the file “blahblahblah.dmg” because there is not enough free disk space.
Not sure how this is possible since the .dmg file is 18MB and Finder is saying there is over 125GB free. I've tried repairing disk permissions, booting off the Lion recovery disk and repairing the startup disk, all to no avail. Anyone had this issue before?

Thanks for the suggestion. That wasn't the problem, but your suggestion did shed light on something else. I was able to perform a right-click action and Save File As... to my Documents folder. On further analysis, it appears that the "Macintosh HD", Downloads folder, and Desktop are showing the "pencil with a line through it" icon in the bottom left of the Finder window, which would suggest those areas are read-only for some reason.
My user account is the only one on the machine and it's an admin account. Any guesses as to why that might have set itself that way, or any suggestions on how to change it? I've already tried repairing permissions on the startup disk in Disk Utility.

I have a 15-inch MacBook Pro (Late 2011) with OS X Mavericks 10.9.5
Last week, my 500 GB Harddrive had 120 GB free space. I was feeling crumby and decided to make productive use of taking a day off to lounge around. I snuggled up with my laptop and dedicated hours to meticulously combing through my iPhoto Library. I had 13,000 pictures, and I got rid of those I didn't want. Having said "sayōnara" to about 6,500 pictures, I then emptied the iPhoto trash and the Finder trash. I took delight in the iconic paper crumpling sound of them vanishing into the digital void.
Everything seemed perfect: the photos I loved were still there, the photos I loathed were gone, both trashes were beautifully empty. Having thrown away all of those awful, boring, and unflattering images of poorly light lunches and selfies gone wrong, my iPhoto library was half the size as before! I felt renewed, a little lighter, somehow more free, and I expected my hard drive to be a bit different to.
I eagerly checked my storage stats. My heart sank to see that my 120 GB of free space, was still only 120 GB of free space. I restarted my MacBook; this did not help. I restarted it the next day; this also did not help. It's been 5 days and the hard drive still has 120 GB free space. This is not an emergency and it will probably be a good while before I clutter my laptop to the brim. Yet while I am glad I don't have to see cringeworthy pictures of my ex's unmentionables every time I'm showing off things I do want to remember, I'm still disappointed and now obsessed with solving this mystery.
What is going on? I don't see them, so where are they hiding? How do I get the free space I should have earned from throwing away 1,000's of photos?!

Yes, I only emptied the trash when it was really full, once I waited until the trash cans contained 2,600 photos and then I emptied them - Oooops! In the future, I'll keep in mind your suggestion of deleting less than 100 photos at a time.
I downloaded the iPhoto Library Manager and used it to rebuild my iPhoto. After a few hours of rebuilding, it generated a new copy of my iPhoto Library. This versions was nearly identical to the original (it was missing 5 photos and was therefore only 5 mb smaller). I guess my Library wasn't defective.
I checked my storage stats, and interestingly, using iPhoto Library Manager did help with the problem that developed after I re-indexed my hard drive. My hard drive is able to properly recognize data categories again, instead of listing almost everything as "Other". Understandably, my free disk space changed from 120 GB to about 60 GB, because my hard drive now contained a second copy of my iPhoto Library as well as iPhoto Library Manager. It seemed like all I needed to do was throw these away, but when I emptied the trash, my problem was not solved. My Hard drive now looked like this:
It appears to me that when I empty the trash, the things I throw away are just hanging around as backups instead of leaving! I went into System Preferences and turned of my time machine OFF. Now my hard drive looks likes this:
The back ups of the iPhoto files, and the program which I deleted, are still on my hard drive some where but now they are listed as "Other" instead of "Backups". Do you know where they might be and how I can delete them for good?

Yes - This is important.
Free Space - Must be on the Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk and can not be used on any other.
My safe level is a minimum of 25Gb free space - to let iDVD and Mac OS run OK.
This is due to that Mac OS X is in reality UNIX and there by needs lot's of temporary space for temp. files and so does the application iDVD. And this can not be addressed elsewhere.
So to free up space - one thing is to move iMovie Events to an external hard disk BUT THIS MUST BE DONE Right Else all can be lost ! !
• Never move or adjust any folders Named - iMovie Events or iMovie Projects - on Desktop/Finder - links will breake and can be hard to impossibly to heal. ALL movings must be done within iMovie Application (it goes for iMovie'08 to 11)
• External Hard Disk - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange will NOT WORK FOR VIDEO - nearly everything else BUT NOT VIDEO.

Captivate 4 shortens timeline - elements are not displayed right anymore

I already searched the forum but couldn’t find an answer. Maybe someone of you can help me.
I have a weird problem with the timeline – in short: it changes.
I have some slides, based on imported Power Point slides. Within captivate I add some Audio (TTS), let appear images & textboxes simultaneously, add buttons etc.
Sometimes I extend the slide duration (for example when slide transition is set to automatically).
And now the problem that occurs: Captivate shortens the timeline – exactly to the length where the audio ends. Doing this causes that elements which are placed at the end of the slide are also shortened and not displayed right anymore.
This is shown in the following screenshot. On the left side of the cursor you can see an image element that normally should fade in directly after the audio ends and should stay for 4 seconds.
I couldn’t figure out when this happens. This means that I have to check every slide again to make sure that all elements are displayed right. Locking elements or the slide itself doesn't help.
Does anybody know why this happens and how to avoid this? I am using Captivate 4 and publish as an .exe or an .swf

If you click Edit > Preferences > Global > Defaults do you have the option Calculate caption timing enabled?
If so, that's likely your issue. Clear the option and your timing should stay put when you make edits.

What does this error message mean. I have pleanty of free disk space - Safari could not download the file “Firefox 20.0.dmg” because there is not enough free disk space.

That misleading error message can be the result of moving a download while it's in progress. Right-click the download package and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. The file you downloaded may be in the folder that opens.

I've tried downloading Windows Media Viewer, StuffIt Expander, and Adobe Reader however when I do I receive an error message as follows (example is for the StuffIt Expander -similar message for the other programs): Safari could not download the file "nstuffitexp12.01.dmg" because there is not enough free disk space.
There is PLENTY of free disk space on my hard drive. The hard drive has 20 GB of Used space and 129 GB of Available space.
A few simple fixes I've tried, that did not help: I cleared my Cache, I emptied my Trash, I restarted the computer. (sorry, I'm a Mac novice -not sure what else to try)
What's wrong? How do I download these files??

Mac OS X can open pdf files fine without Adobe's bloatware, they open by default in TextEdit - the whole of OS X's display system is actually based around pdf technology so it's easy for the system to integrate pdf tools. There are alternative tools available on MacUpdate but for reading TextEdit is fine.
wmv files should be opened with the Flip4Mac Quicktime plugin, Microsoft no longer support their own player on Mac and even supply the F4M plugin from their own download pages.
For Stuffit files (which are thankfully much rarer these days) I'd use The Unarchiver instead of Allume's fat cat.
To fix the other problem you could try changing your download location in Safari preferences, General - it may be that the location you are downloading to has the problem. You can pick anywhere you like just to test it out.

Issue 2: Not enough free disk space

Well, now that I'm here, I will try to figure out all my problems.
Ignoring the fact that my MacBook won't turn on, once it goes back to normal, I hope I can solve another thing. Two or three times, while I've been working in heavey Word documents in my Macbook, a message box appears when I click on save or when it tries to do "Autorecovery". It says there's not enough free disk space for me to save that file. What I do every time is I select all, then copy and then quit word. I open it again, paste and save. Everything is fine, but I'd really like to know *** is wrong since I do have a lot of free disk space and this doesn't happen unless it's a heavy file in word. Should I get rid of some apps? Unused files? I don't have that many... I think my Macbook is acting weird since I've almost got nothing stored in it but files, pictures and songs. Any ideas on how to prevent this from happening again?

Get Info on your hard drive or open a finder window and see how much space is available on your drive - that's at the bottom. Music, pictures, movies use more disk space than most files. You might have enough space sometimes because various programs - like Safari - cache material and the caches can get large. Some caches empty themselves and others need to be emptied; you can empty the Safari cache from one of the menus.

Mac users using Word 2004 who receive a Word 2008 for Mac, (or Word 2007 for Windows) document, will not be able to read this without having the Open XML Converter installed, which can be downloaded from Microsoft.

This opens a window at the bottom of the page. Scroll that to the bottom and click on English.dmg, and it will download for you as a disk image, which can be installed in the usual way.
After installation you can open and read .xml formatted Word 2008 documents in Word 2004.
Update: This link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976831 takes you to a newer version 1.1.3 (released Nov 10, 2009).

Windows-- not enough free disk space

Hi umm i have a dell and everytime i try to convret a song it says that there is not enough free disk space? is there anything i can do about that because it relates to my whole computer like when i try to put more picture on my computer it also says that error i was just wondering if theres a way to fix that because i have deleted every program and folder that i dont need on my computer so im not sure what to do next please help!!

Go to My Computer, hold your cursor over your hard drive(s) it should tell you the remaining free space. If it is less than 500 MB you should definitely delete some big files; i.e. videos, movies, and maybe music and pictures. It sounds like you can't find any big files to delete so just do a search for 'All files and folders' that are larger than say 100 MB. Then just delete what you don't need.

How to find out the unused disk space?

I want to know if there is any way possible by which I can find out the amount of disk space that is available. I have to write an application that checks for the disk space under Windows and Unix platforms. If anything is possible please let me know as soon as possible.

I know that there is no Java API for it. I tried using the Runtime.getRuntime().exec("cmd /c dir") method to find out the available disk space. But it returns the value through the InputStream which would have to be parsed to get the unused disk space value. If there is a way to write a shell script (for Unix / Linux) and a batch file (for Windows), please do let me know of the same. Also please let me know how to execute the script / batch. Awaiting your reply.

Unable to install SCCM roles - reporting not enough available disk space on to complete this operation

Hi.
I am having a strange problem with my SCCM 2012 R2 installation running on Windows Server 2008 R2.
I am not able to add any new roles to the server.
Event log reports: "Product: Application Web Service -- There is not enough available disk space on to complete this operation. Installation requires at least 10MB free disk space."
awebsvcMSI.log reports: "Product: Application Web Service -- Configuration failed."
and
"Windows Installer reconfigured the product. Product Name: Application Web Service. Product Version: 5.00.7958.1000. Product Language: 1033. Manufacturer: Microsoft Corporation. Reconfiguration success or error status: 1603."
I have three disks in the server.
C: (OS) ~8.7 GB free space
D: (SCCM) ~7.69 GB free space
E: (data) ~52.4 GB free space
I have NO_SMS_ON_DRIVE.SMS files on C: and D:. I tried removing it from D: and restarting the server without any effect.
Does anyone have a solution to this?

Finder not displaying all files in remote directory

Sorry, this is a repost as I have gotten no response from my original request here: Finder not displaying all files in remote directory
I've exported pictures from iPhoto on my iMac to a shared directory on my mac mini. When I access that directory from my iMac, I can see some but not all of the pictures. I know the pictures exported properly because I can see them all from the mac mini. I can open up a terminal window on my iMac and see all of the files; I can also open those files from the terminal.
I'm running OSX 10.9.4 on both computers, with the mac mini also running OSX Server. I've placed a screen grab below from my iMac of what Finder sees vs what I can see from the terminal.
Why isn't Finder displaying all of my files?

Adding a new file to the shared folder results in me being able to see the new file from my clients regardless of where it was added from, however the "hidden" files do not suddenly pop up.
I tried a few more experiments that had interesting results, but still didn't lead me to an answer.
First I tried copying the files from the remote directory to a local directory; I did this in 2 different ways and had different results. Method A) I copied files from the mounted share to a local dir: "cp /Volumes/MyShare/dir/*.JPG .". Method B) I copied the files using secure copy: "scp user@server:/path/to/dir/*.JPG .".
Method A resulted in Finder not being able to see the files in the local directory, while Method B did. This was interesting and lead me to suspect an issue with the way I am sharing the directory on the server. From Server settings I have both afp and smb checked. I tried enabling only one or the other and reconnecting; but this did not fix the problem.
Next I tried exporting the photos from iPhoto again. Exporting them locally results in files that Finder can see. Exporting them to my server results the same bad behavior
Getting desperate, I also tried renaming all of the files from "*.JPG" to "*.jpg" but this didn't help.
One last experiment, I see the same behavior from both another Mac and a PC on my local network... FTP works fine.
Any more ideas?

From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Time Machine
If there is a closed padlock icon in the lower left corner of the preference pane, click it to unlock the settings and authenticate. Turn Time Machine OFF, then back ON. Close the window.
Restart the computer. Try the download again.
