Finder not responding when opening folders: Beachball spins for 2 minutes

Hi, whenever, I attempt to view the contents of my folder (Any folder, folder with a few items in it or a folder with a lot of items in it), I get the beachball of death spin. Then, I try to force quit and I notice that the finder is not responding. After a good two minutes the beachball stops spinning and then I can view my folder contents. When I attempt to view the folder's content, it doesn't freeze up my application use, however it does stop me from trashing objects.
Any suggestions

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Locate the file in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder, drag it to the Desktop, and log out/in or restart and let us know what happens.
That recommendation presumes that you can ultimately open the windows required to accomplish that task
If you are unable to open the necessary windows, start up in Safe Mode and try the same thing.

  • System Preferences not responding when opening desktop

After installing Lion 10.7, I find that whenever I try to change the desktop wallpaper in system preferences, it freezes and I have to force quit it.
I tried to find the systempreferences.plist, as seen from google searches, but I can't find it anywhere, and those seem to be solutions for SL, L or Tiger.
    Help appreciated.

I've been having the same issue with system preferences in osx lion freezing and not doing anything for the past week.  Your post solved the problem; all I had to do was move the iphoto library and the photo booth library to the desktop, then I moved them back to my pictures folder in the finder window.  Now system preferences works like a charm, even if I restart the system the system preferences utilities are all accessible.
This solved the problem; whereas other posts that had me use disk utility to repair the hard drive or repair the disk permissions didn't solve the issue.
This now saves me a call to apple tech support
    Thank you.

It has to do with a problem accessing the images on the home>images folder. To solve it, just move its content (iphoto library included) to another place. Then, restart System Preferences. Moving your iPhoto library to another location seems to fix the problem. I am sure Apple will issue an update to correct this problem. But, for now this seems to work for me.

  • Lots of programs does not respond, when opened

Lots of programs does not respond, when they are opened, Apple store, Mail, Photo Booth and VideoConverterPro and some moor.
To close, I have to click on finder first. What to do ?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • "Not Responding" when opening Captivate v4

I am having real problems when connected to my company network and trying to work in Captivate (v4, Windows XP).
The problem does not always happen when I am working with just one project, but if I open another project (e.g. to copy a slide or text etc), I get at least two, often three or four messages at the top of the Captivate screen telling me "not responding".
My question...when you launch Captivate when online, does it go off and connect to an Adobe website somewhere, for online help, updates etc?  (sorry about non-tech speak)
Maybe this is the problem and if so, is there anyway of turning off this auto link to Adobe when working on-line?

    Hi Rick,
I only get this sort of delay with Captivate.
I have turned off the "auto update" checker option some time ago, so now I wonder if it is possible to turn off the area you highlighted...the flash gizmo that checks the Adobe server?
I reckon that is what is causing the problem.
If it cannt be turned off, then I will have to ask my IT (unhelpful) help desk to take a look "behind the scenes" to see what is happening and where the blockage is....but I know already where that will get me.

  • "Not responding" when opening multiple files

I just installed Adobe Acrobat XI Pro. I can open one file - most of the time, but if I try to open two PDF files simultaneously, the reader hangs and I get a "Not Responding" message. I tried to open a single file and open the preferences dialog box under Edit and the reader hung again. I've registered my product with my license #.
FYI, I'm running Windows 7 pro

This will most likely due to hardware acceleration. There are a number of bug reports that are still being worked on to improve startup times with hardware acceleration turned on.
You can turn off hardware acceleration to improve startup times. To do that in the Tools menu select Options to open the options dialog. Select the Advanced panel, and then the General tab. Uncheck the setting "Use hardware acceleration when available".

  • Not responding when opening FireFox 4.0b7

    Hi there,
When opening FireFox 4.0b7 the browser hangs for about a minute and I get (Not Responding). If I use FireFox 3.6.13 I have no problems at all or if I use any of the other browsers, link IE9 Beta. What is going on?
The opening webpage we use is: I have changed the opening homepage to and the same thing happens.
Thanks for reading and any help you can give.

My FCPX isn't responding when I'm trying to create and edit a new project. I just bought this tonight and it's giving me the beach ball and not responding. What is going on?

And now I tried to open a link from an email, and the same fucking problem.

  • Why is my lightroom not downloading.  Just sitting and spinning for 30 minutes

Why is my Lightroom install just sitting and spinning for over 30 minutes?  Not downloading

I decided to back up my photos to an external drive just in case my
computer doesn't turn on one day. I backed up the catalog to my hard
drive, was this wrong of me to do?
Backing up your catalog is never a bad idea. In fact, you should do so frequently. BUT, don't confuse backing up the catalog with backing up your photos. The photos are not "in" the catalog which is nothing more than a big ole' list of information about your photos - where they are on the disc, what edits you will want done to them when it comes time to export them, what tags or collection memberships are associated with them, etc. - but the photos themselves are in whatever folders you put them into.
If your original catalog file got moved or deleted, LR will give you a notice that says something like, "LR cannot find the catalog. Do you want LR to make a new catalog?" If you "OK" this, it will create a new empty catalog. If you then reimport all your photos they will be without edits (or more precisely with default edits). What you need to do is to either find your original catalog on your hard disc (a file that has the extension .lrcat) or copy the backup that you made back to somewhere on your internal HD. Then double-click on the .lrcat file and LR will open with the catalog that contains all your edits.

  • Safari Not Responding When Opening New Tab

For the past few days, every time I try to open a new tab in Safari, I get the spinning pinwheel and I have to force quit Safari. Every. Single. Time.
So far I've tried upgrading to OS X 10.8.5, turning off extensions, clearing the cache, restarting the computer. It still happens every time I try to open a tab. I have no idea why this is happening all of a sudden. The only thing I've downloaded recently is the FlipClock widget. I can't think of any reason for this to start happening out of the blue, but I'm about to flip my lid. Help?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Has anyone noticed Finder not responding when you try to shutdown?

No problem when I turn my machine on, but 30 minutes later the problem emerges.  Another symptom seems to be that the pictures of icons start to disappear in folders.  The files are still there, but the icon picture is blank.  Then I can't delete things, or move things...and when I try to shutdown it hangs on not being able to sutdown Finder.

Mostly 1080p 24 fps .mov files, plus some images and then animated titles.
I've managed to find an early version from before the "toxic" animation so I'm working from that but it's incredbily slow.
Playback and rendering is seriously slow, but looking at the Activity Monitor that seems to be because my CPU is at 200% whilst RAM has around 1gb free. I'm on a 2.53 ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, would an i5 or i7 make a huge difference?
I can only go as fast as Firewire 800, would you reccommend editing from there? I was thinking of getting a G Drive 2tb... My MBP doesn't have USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt capability unfortunately.

  • Logic Pro not responding when opening a new song

I just got my logic Pro and I want to learn how to use it so I am using Apple Pro Training Series book. I installed my lessons like shown and when I open Logic and click File>New a dialog appears asking if you'd like to close the currently open song before opening the new one. Then that is where Logic doesn't respond. I have to force quit and then restart the app. Also, I tried to save my own Modulation Delay setting and it froze up again. It's like when it tries to open the file in the hard drive it has trouble.
What is the problem? Can someone please give me some advice so I get start having fun? Thanks
    iMac 24   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

What is Faces 3 exactly? A sample? If it is a sample or audio file...  Is it present on your system? Does it load if you simply open it from within finder?
Have you also made sure both your plugins are updated to the latest versions?  (and that they are indeed at the latest versions?)
GR5 in particular had been a little fussy for me recently... until the latest update came out and now it seems to have settled back down again...
The fact that without CoreAudio, LPX opened correctly indicates either an issue with a 3rd parry plugin or device or.. some form of corruption with a project...
Have you tried using the Selective Track Import (STI) feature in LPX to import the tracks of your problematic project in question, one by one into a new project... to see which, if any, single track and it's contents... is the cause of the problem?
This is for LP9 but STI works much the same way in LPX.. ro-9--audio-3181

  • Iphoto '11 not responding when opened

I open iPhoto '11 and the white line light up in a circle for a few seconds, but then where the photos should be, its just grey. I have let it sit for days, but it doesn't respond. It doen't respond to any where I click on the window either.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Finder issues - crashing when opening folders.

When I try to open a folder from my desktop all my icons dissapear then reappear seconds later. I can only open a finder window by clicking on the Applications tab in the Dock then click open in finder. Also I cant open minecraft or use the technic launcher to play tekkit. I have tryed resetting the pram and repairing the permissions but to no avail.

I have disabled all the apps in the menubar exept one that will not go. I have even tryed to delete it using AppCleaner but it created no sucess. Also I have found that it works in SafeMode but not in Normal mode.
    Thanks for your help
