Finder not showing every file

I noticed today as I was trying to locate a folder on hardrive that Finder cannot find it. The folder in question is a library folder for an application and when i view it from within the application, i can see it and all of its contents. However, if I open finder and go to its supposed location, it is not there. To add to the mystery, when I had first installed the application i was able to locate and modify the directory via finder and now 2 weeks later i cannot. In addition, I have also noticed several other folders in the library/application support/ directory are not there as well, but show up in my application's file list. Any help would be appriciated. I am running a mid 2010 MacBook Pro 13 with OS X Lion.

Use the Songs view. Hold down alt/option and use View > Show Exact Duplicate Items, sort the resulting list on Date Added, then delete the most recent additons, leaving the originals behind. Ideally you should take a complete backup of the current state of the library & media folder before you start just in case you select more files to delete than you should.
Oops, I've seen where you say the files have the same date added values... In that case you either need to manually select all but one of each repeating group to remove using CMD-clicks, or look to third party tools such as Dupin or Dupin Lite from Doug's Scripts.

  • Find not showing all files

    Why is this happening?

Sorry - I did finally find the App Support folder in my hidden Library folder, but for some reason since my address book crashed, it opens up blank now even though the address book file is there.
I even tried replacing with a backup I did a couple of days ago and it still comes up blank.
I am not iClouding, but I do use Bento, which does show the records.  It's just that recently changes I had made to the address book file (via Bento) must not really have updated the system address book file (which Bento uses) because when I synced by iPhone the new changes did not show there.
In any case, my main problem is that Address Book shows no records even though I know they are there because the abcddb file is 9.8 MB (4000+) records.
Anyone have any ideas?  Many thanks.

  • Finder not showing individual files

When I am looking at finder, there are no files in any folder. Applications is empty, Downloads is empty, folders I have created are empty. Yet if I I do a search on a file or application it shows it being there. I am running 10.9.4 on an 2009 iMac. Any help is appreciated.

    Hi there amorse,
If you can find the file in Spotlight, you can use the "Show All in Finder" option to help you track down where that file is located. Take a look at the article below for more information.

  • Finder Not Showing All Files in Folder?

I have had this happen to me in Tiger before but in the past week or so I have come across two instances where Finder is not displaying all the files in a folder. On the first occurrence, I was moving files over from a samba share and for some reason Finder was not reading a few music files. Thus, those files did not get moved over, and just now I was reviewing some bank statements and one of the PDF statements I saved yesterday did not appear until I did a "killall Finder" in Terminal. Has anyone else experienced this? This seems to be a serious flaw that could bring about data loss issues.
    Thanks,
    James

Latest Mac OS X 10.5.1 build fixes Finder data loss issue
    By AppleInsider Staff
    Published: 04:00 PM EST
Apple Inc. on Monday continued to pound away at its first maintenance and security update to the recently released Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard operating system, issuing a new test build to developers that fixes the much publicized Finder data loss issue.
People familiar with the ongoing testing process for Mac OS X 10.5.1 Update say the new build, labeled Mac OS X 10.5.1 build 9B16, was accompanied by a note to developers that specifically mentions a Finder-related fix affecting files that are moved between directories.
It was widely reported earlier this month that Leopard's Finder is affected by a glaring bug in its directory-moving code, which could lead to horrendous data loss if a destination volume disappears while a move operation is in progress.
Those people familiar with pre-release builds of Mac OS X 10.5.1 also added that the software update will deliver an enhancement to Leopard that will allow Apple's Software Update and installer applications to make revisions to application files which may have been moved outside their designated "Applications" directory on Leopard volumes.
As was the case with build 9B13, which was released for private testing last Monday, Apple is reportedly asking that its developers test the latest build broadly, paying particular attention to Time Machine, Mail, iCal, Back To My Mac, Bonjour, AirPort, gaming graphics, networking and the Finder.
Mac OS X 10.5.1 is expected to be released as a free update within a few weeks' time.

  • Finder is not showing correct file in cover flow mode. The files shown in the top panel are one file off.

finder is not showing correct file in cover flow mode. The files shown in the top panel are one file off.

This problem occurs after I move a file or files to trash. If I remove one file, then the sequence is one file off, if I move two files to trash then the sequence istwo file off. For example, if I delete file 1 and highlight (click on) file 3, then the cover flow panel shows file 2, when it should show file 3.

  • Finder dose not show all files

finder dose not show all files and is not open.
nothing is shown on the desktop.
    how is it fixed?

Could be disk corruption or bad perference file (s).
You may want to run these "standard" fixes if the problem persists.
    1) Check the amount of free space on your harddrive.  You should have a several gigs free.
    2) You should run disk utility
         Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility
         a) verify the disk
         b) update your permissions.
    3) Try a safe boot.
Shutdown your machine.  Hold down the shift key.  Poweron.  Wait awhile Wait awhile while you harddrive
          is being checked.

    4) Define a new account & see if the problem occurs on that account.

  • Open/Save Dialog does not show new files?

Say you are working on a logic file in a folder and you have
a few audio and movie files in that folder, and you launch
Logic and via the open/save dialog window you add a few
files to your song and in that dialog window you can see
all the files in that folder.
Then, in the Finder you add a few more files and movies to
that folder and again use the open/save dialog window to
add more files BUT the new files you added since launching
logic are NOT SHOWN in the dialog window ! ?
    What's the deal with that?
Every other app can show files added since the launch of the
    application, why not Logic?
    PowerBook G4 1GHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    project manager
    um, yeah.
Should not need the project manager simply to see new files added to a directory in a Open/Save dialog window since last opening the app.
I did a scan, a extended scan, opened all the little turn down arrows of the
full path to the directory I knew there to be the new files and yes, Logic
shows them there in the "Project manager".
BUT Logic still does not show the files in the Open/Save dialog windows.
This is strange because even simple app like TextEdit can show
new files in it's Open/Save dialog function windows without the need of
    a project manager.
I have to quit and re-launch each time to see any new files?

    Hi ..
    Might be corrupted Finder preferences.
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.finder.plist file to the Trash.
    Restart your Mac.

  • Mavericks 10.9.1-Problem with finder not showing peripheral hardware

After upgrading to Mavericks (10.9.1) my Finder doesn't show new hardware in Devices. For example, Finder not showing iPod when i plug into the keyboard's usb. i have other examples  of the same problem, such as trying to find a hard drive detached from an old computer. anyone know if i can configure Finder to show all peripheral (hardware) devices? maybe i need to plug the peripherals into back of the iMac rather thatn into my keyboard usb (which i have not tried.) Thanks in advance.

I had a similar issue as you did -- for a few weeks now I've been suffering through agonizingly slow Contacts performance.
The way I resolved it was:
    1) Quit Contacts
    2) Go to system preferences and go into iCloud, then uncheck contacts -- choosing to delete from mac.
    3) Go into system preferences and to Internet Accounts and again uncheck contacts under any of the accounts it's enabled on (gmail, yahoo, etc).
    4) Go to your user's library folder (easiest way is to open a finder window, hold down the option key on the keyboard and from the Go menu, select Library).
    5) Delete anything referring to Address book or com.apple.address book....   -- check these folders in particular:
         - Address Book
         - Application Support
         - Caches
         - Preferences
    6) Restart your computer
    7) Go back into System preferences and enable contacts from wherever you want (iCloud, etc.)
    8) If it's not quite enabling (appears to enable, but checkbox doesn't show), then do one more restart of the computer.
    9) Now open Contacts and allow it to sync

  • CS3: Bridge does not show dng-files

First it started to refuses to show NEF files, and now, it will not show dng files - or at least some of my dng files.
What the H.... is wrong with this crap?

But I do not understand, why Bridge suddenly cannot see them - when it could a couple of days ago
CS3 is known for being the worst version of Bridge with very strange behavior. Might be preferences or cache related or some other strange reason. Fact is that using old software for new digital cameras has the only advantage as being cheap. You do miss a lot of functions, options and especially quality for developing your Raw files. CS6 has a complete new Raw process version called 2012. And since you use CS3 you still will be at process 2003 and already missed process version 2010.
So you seriously should consider buying CS6 ( you missed the option for an upgrade since this was shut down per december last year due to new upgrade policy) if you want to get the most out of your expensive new dSLR

a lot of these USB disks are garbage. Remove the hard disk from the case and connect it to an available desktop which will be able to read the disk.

Application "FINDER"not responding,Desktop files disappeared & " also "Trash" not working svn after relaunching several times.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process (Finder) in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Finder not displaying all files in remote directory

Sorry, this is a repost as I have gotten no response from my original request here: Finder not displaying all files in remote directory
I've exported pictures from iPhoto on my iMac to a shared directory on my mac mini. When I access that directory from my iMac, I can see some but not all of the pictures. I know the pictures exported properly because I can see them all from the mac mini. I can open up a terminal window on my iMac and see all of the files; I can also open those files from the terminal.
I'm running OSX 10.9.4 on both computers, with the mac mini also running OSX Server. I've placed a screen grab below from my iMac of what Finder sees vs what I can see from the terminal.
Why isn't Finder displaying all of my files?

    thanks for responding
Adding a new file to the shared folder results in me being able to see the new file from my clients regardless of where it was added from, however the "hidden" files do not suddenly pop up.
I tried a few more experiments that had interesting results, but still didn't lead me to an answer.
First I tried copying the files from the remote directory to a local directory; I did this in 2 different ways and had different results. Method A) I copied files from the mounted share to a local dir: "cp /Volumes/MyShare/dir/*.JPG .". Method B) I copied the files using secure copy: "scp user@server:/path/to/dir/*.JPG .".
Method A resulted in Finder not being able to see the files in the local directory, while Method B did. This was interesting and lead me to suspect an issue with the way I am sharing the directory on the server. From Server settings I have both afp and smb checked. I tried enabling only one or the other and reconnecting; but this did not fix the problem.
Next I tried exporting the photos from iPhoto again. Exporting them locally results in files that Finder can see. Exporting them to my server results the same bad behavior
Getting desperate, I also tried renaming all of the files from "*.JPG" to "*.jpg" but this didn't help.
One last experiment, I see the same behavior from both another Mac and a PC on my local network... FTP works fine.
    Any more ideas?

  • Finder Not showing Sidebar

In my finder not showing sidebar.
I have checked finder preferences etc..

Finder menu > View > Show Sidebar.
    Does that help?
Sometimes I have to select it twice to get it to appear (Finder likes to ignore simple requests with no explanation ).
You may also be able to drag from the left edge to make it appear too, but that can also be hit or miss.
