Finder "Open with" not working on 10.6 any more

Hi,
I am experiencing some issues with finders "open with" > Change all function.
It does not work for .doc files any more since Snow Leopard. The "Change all" button is disabled. I can change to pages via the drop down menu but that's it.
The button is working fine for other files types (eg. PDF). Is there any solution or explanation for this yet?
How could I manually tell SL to open all .doc files with pages in order to avoid the bug?
Thanks in advance!

Okay, I get it and it works.
- Select file & select "Get Info" from right-click menu
- Change the default Application *for this file*
- *Close "Get Info" dialog*
- Select file & select "Get Info" from right-click menu
- Now the "change for all" button is active
The "change all" button was active instantly in previous OS X versions iirc. Anyway, it works this way.

  • 'Open With' not working

Hi - I'm having problems with the "Open With' options in the Finder.
Rather than having repeat Applications listed as experienced by others on the forum, I don't get the Open With option at all. It's listed in the menu when I right click but it doesn't open to reveal any applications.
The same occurs with Automator when I right click on a file - in fact any option with a triangle next to it to indicate further programs does not work any longer.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Just a quick update - I've also lost the ability to select an option on anything when I right click - for example right clicking on the dock brings up the usual options but I can't highlight any of them........
So it seems to be on any files or programs.......

  • Open With Not Working (Almost)

When double-clicking a .jpg resource in DW it would not show
in PS CS3. Also, Open-With-->Photoshop did not work. In the DW
Preference menu I noticed the PS appeard twice. I removed one of
them (fortunately the older PS CS version) and then all was fine.
The DW Preference dialog box for File Types/Editors seems very
poorly designed as there is no way of showing the path were it will
find the Editor, hence PS showed up 2x but was unclear which one was
CS3 and which one was the older version on my computer.
Am I missing something here is this just bad UI?

  • Users changing 'open with:' not working/permanent

We have an issue with 'open with:' (within get info options) not permanently remembering any changes.
We have Lion Server set up as OD and when users login any PDF or EPS files are set to open using Preview, users then change this via 'get info' to 'open with:' (change all) Acrobat and iIlustrator. But, this only works for the present session. If they move to another mac or a mac is restarted, the options revert back to Preview, not a permanently change to Acrobat and illustrator.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

We have now changed to a new Server running ML Server and still having the same problems, is there no-one who knows how to solve this???

  • PSE 11 - Trying to Use "Open With" not working right

Hi - I just bought PSE 11 and have installed it on my computer.  I am trying to right click on a file and use the "Open With" option to open the jpg in the program.  However, the program opens but not the photo.  I can open files within the program by going to "File - Open" just fine.  The program that is on the "Open With" list isn't the right one (it's Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 rather than PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe).  However, when I try to browse to and select the correct file it doesn't show up when I get back to the "Open With" screen.  I've tried uninstall and reinstall.  I've also tried using the program on another user and it works fine there but I don't want to switch all of my info to another user just to open photos.  Photos open just fine in PSE 9 with the "Open With" method.  Any help would be *greatly* appreciated.  Thanks.

Go to the Editor application in the programs or programs (x86) folder and right-click on it and choose properties. Select the security tab and make sure you have full permissions with read/write capability.

  • Group Policy For 2008 Terminal Server Users Default Open With Not Working

I'm trying to change the default open with behavior for jpg files on my terminal server. I created a Group Policy that changed it to MS Paint to Office 2010 Picture Manager. The policy appears to apply correctly but jpg files still open in
Paint. When a user is logged on, if they look at the properties of a jpg, it shows Photo Gallery as the program to open it but when opened, it opens in Paint.
Has anyone seen this behavior before?

  • Always open with not working

Some of my .kmz files are opening with Google Earth (good) and some are opening with Adobe Photoshop CS4 (bad). I tried the following
    1) Rebuild launchservices database in Onyx
    2) Delete ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist and ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.QuarantineEvents per the advice at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11031322
I still get the following in the Finder
    a) Select a .kmz with the icon that indicates that it will open in Photoshop
    b) Get info, select "Open with: Google Earth"
    c) Select Change All...
    d) Confirm that I am sure that I want to do this
    e) WATCH THE FINDER REVERT TO OPEN WITH ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CS4 for this document!
Any thoughts, or is this just a bug I have to live with?

I have the exact same issue. It occurs with every file type I've tried.
    Any suggestions?

  • Wacom Intuos not working in PS C5 any more

When I first installed the tablet software into the computer, I used it in PS just fine.  I used it successfully to adjust a logo; all features worked nicely.  Recently, I pick an action, it is highlighted, but all it will do is the erase function.  I have clicked paint bucket, picker, scissors, etc, and all the stylus does is make white marks across my art.  When I click under "History" it just shows a long list of "erase" functions.  I have updated the software for  the tablet, but it hasn't helped.  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

I figured it out by accident.  Obviously I am not an expert, sigh.  My stylus has two different tips on each end.  I prefer using the wide tip for many applications, as the fine tip is really scratchy feeling on the surface of the tablet.  However, the fine tip is the one that is used to choose functions.  All I had to do was turn the stylus around.  Problem solved.

  • Cannot create new folders on desktop. Cannot drag new items onto desktop. Desktop in Finder opens with Terminal. Not sure if this has anything to do with upgrading to Mavericks but I need help if anyone has ideas. Thank you.

I can no longer create new folders on my desktop. The option to do that is now light gray on the drop down menu and can't be selected.
I cannot drag new items onto desktop any longer either.
The Desktop in Finder opens with Terminal.
Folders and items on Desktop open and work normally.
Not sure if this has anything to do with upgrading to Mavericks but I need help if anyone has ideas.
    Thank you.

Take these steps if the cursor changes from an arrow to a white "prohibited" symbol when you try to move an icon on the Desktop.
Sometimes the problem may be solved just by logging out or rebooting. Try that first, if you haven't already done it. Otherwise, continue.
Select the icon of your home folder (a house) in the sidebar of a Finder window and open it. The Desktop folder is one of the subfolders. Select it and open the Info window. In the General section of the window, the Kind will be either Folder  or something else, such as Anything.
If the Kind is Folder, uncheck the box marked Locked. Close the Info window and test.
If the Kind is not Folder, make sure the Locked box is not checked and that you have Read & Write privileges in the  Sharing & Permissions section. Then close the Info window and do as follows.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    xattr -d com.apple.FinderInfo Desktop
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You should get a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”). Quit Terminal.
    Relaunch the Finder.
If the problem is now resolved, and if you use iPhoto, continue.
Quit iPhoto if it's running. Launch it while holding down the option key. It will prompt you to select a library. Choose the one you want to use (not the Desktop folder.)

  • In OS Yosemite the search function in Mail, Finder, Spotlight- does not work

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)
    2,6 GHz Intel Core i7
    16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB
    OS Yosemite,
    Finder versión 10.10.1
    Mail Versión 8.1 (1993)
In OS Yosemite the search function in Mail, Finder, Spotlight… does not work. Messages or documents with the search criteria are there and one could find them manually, but the search function fails to find them. Following advice from Apple Support (728965377):
    1. I applied an Apple protocol for adware removal (Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac); I had none, because I had formally utilized a similar protocol that I had found in Internet, actually an app that implemented automatically Apple's adware removal protocol.
    2. I rebuild the post boxes in Mail (Mail (Yosemite): Reconstruir buzones); It took a while but it functioned properly
    3. I re-install the System (OS X Yosemite: Reinstalar OS X); It took about 4 hours but there was no problem whatsoever with the installation.
Afterwards I searched for messages in Mail, and documents in Finder and Spotlight, without any difficulty. The search function in all of them was working properly. But the next time that I needed to search messages or documents, an hour later or so, the problem reappear and a couple of new issues occurred:
    1. in app RagTime 6.5.2 (Build 1821), www.ragtime.de, the menu bar disappears (it is invisible), when one performs certain operations, e. g., calculating a value with a formula, whether it is in a spreadsheet or some other component (text, drawing, etc.). After touching with the cursor the menu bar is visible again.
    2. after reading an e-mail in Mail or copying an address, this is seeing as a floating object in the finder and over every application. There is no logical way to get rid of the floating object and neither copying or deleting or cutting it. It is not a big issue but nonetheless bothersome.
    3. In Mail, messages with Flag or in VIP contacts cannot be seen in the appropriate folders, only in the Incoming mail folder, together with other messages. It seems to me, this issue is part of same search function problem.
    4. The preview function within Mail does not show the attached documents to a message, whether it is in the IN, OUT or Draft boxes.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try again to re-index Spotlight. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

  • Find my iPhone not working

My son's iPhone 4s was locked a few months ago by some friends who were playing a joke on him.  They input the wrong passcode over and over again until it was locked indefinietly.  I had to restore the iPhone using a method I found online and got his phone working again.  I didn't realize it until recently, but his Find My iPhone app no longer works.  It is on and logged in as my Apple ID (although I have to continually put the password in).  Anytime I try to use Find My iPhone to locate his phone, it shows me that his phone is offline.  Even when I open the app on his phone and try to locate his phone, it says it's offline.
I feel that this issue has something to do with the restore that I did.  I don't remember exactly HOW I restored the phone, but know I used iTunes.  I've checked his settings for Location Services and Find My iPhone...All are active and Find My iPhone is active on my sons phone. His phone is also updated to the most recent iOS software. The wierd thing is, I CAN find him or his phone using the Find Friends app.  He has a tendency to misplace his phone in our home and the Find My iPhone app is great because it allows me to send a signal to play a sound to help us locate it.  The Find Friends app doesn't have that capability.  Has anyone else had an issue with Find My iPhone not working after a restore?

Usually Apple recommended the below steps :
Why your iPhone (iPad, or iPod Touch) not appear in Find My iPhone?
    Here are some reasons:
Your iCloud account is not configured on your device. Choose Settings > iCloud and enter your iCloud account information.
Your device is not update. It needs to be running iOS 5 or higher.
The date is incorrect on your device. Choose Settings > General > Date & Time to check and set the date.
Your device has lost network connectivity. If you have access to your device, and it appears to have an active Internet connection, in this case enable and then disable Airplane mode or turn the device off and back on.
Your device appears in Find My iPhone, but is offline, the reasons:
Your device is powered off, such as when the battery has run out.
Your iPhone’s cellular service has been terminated by your wireless service provider.
Your iPod Touch, iPad, or Mac is asleep and not connected to a known Wi-Fi network. The command will be processed when your device is awakened and connected to the Internet.

  • Finder Open With Lists Some Applications Twice

My finder>open with menu lists some applications twice.
A minor annoyance I'd like to fix.
Example: If I choose a JPG file and go to "open with" the following programs are listed twice: Firefox, QuickTime, RealPlayer & Safari. Some other programs are listed once.
There are NOT two versions of these programs on my computer, but there is the System folder from my old Mac.
Is there a way to fix this little problem?
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   17 inch

The mac finder will pick up applications anywhere on your hard drive when you do the "open with".
If you aren't using your old System Folder you could create a .zip archive of it and remove the original Folder.
I'd be open to hearing other approaches, but this will work.

hi pls help me my iphone is forest i update but  after my iphone is  devices open is not working i click but sim card installed , attempting to activate this one coming pls help me answer me

Sounds like your phone was hacked to use with your carrier.  Updating it has relocked the phone to it's original carrier.  You will not get the phone working again without a SIM from the original carrier.

  • TA24770 Clear Finder "Open With" menu with VMware Fusion 5

    Hi.
I had same problem of duplicate Apps showing on Finder "Open With" contextual menu.
After following instructions on this link http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24770?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US  all Mac applications where OK, but could not see VMware Fusion Virtual Machine applications in Finder contextual menu.
    So follow these steps:
    Shut down virtual machine.
    Open virtual machine settings.
    Go to Default Applications.
    Click "Restore Applications".
    Start virtual machine.
This should reset contextual menu in Finder with the VMware Fusion 5 applications.
    Mac OS X 10.8.3
    VMware Fusion 5.0.3

    Great, post tip, thanks!

  • Weird Finder 'Open With' menu problem

I have a new Lion MBP -- I did not use the migration asssistant from my old MBP instead I installed apps manually - now the weird thing is that the Finder 'Open with' context based menu includes apps that were installed on my old MBP that are not (and have never been) installed on the new computer!!
How did that happen... anyone have any ideas and how I can get rid of these 'ghost' entries.
    Thanks
