Finder relaunching all the time

Just loaded the last Security update and now the finder keeps re-launching itself every 90 seconds or so in the background. Have run Onyx and used disc utility to repair permissions. Programs are unaffected. Any ideas?
(iMac G5 1.8 running 10.4.11)

I had the exact same problem over the past couple of weeks on this older PowerBook that I use at home to read basically email. I finally decided to look up for a solution and this was the second link I read, which did the trick! I still do not know what triggered it, since I had StuffIt installed since forever and I don't recall making any changes in any preferences (at least consciously). Maybe some combination of keystrokes that I did not really intend to type had turned on this option. It's probably a good idea to ask StuffIt folks if they know about it or can do anything to prevent this from happening. It's really annoying and I do not know what controls the interval between the relaunches. Thanks Miriam, good job!

  • Finder Crashes All The Time - Mountain Lion.

    Helo there,
My iMac used to work just fine, but now after a year I got it, Finder crashes all the time. It doesn't show my folders, only some of them. I have to search to see them. When I open Finder, and try to work with it, I will get the loading colloured cirkel. Also Finder's sidebar doesn't show my favorites, airdrop or all my files. I can only see shared computers and extended drives and usb's. I've got two extended harddrives connected to my Mac, both of 1TB. One of them is my TimeMachine and the other is my old drive with movies. When I open the TimeMachine drive, I works just fine but when I open my older drive it will load very long and then show nothing. If I want to upload a picture on facebook or something like that, and I get the window to choose the file, it will lagg, stuck and not work, cause I can't see anything. I have to search it then with spotlight, and then select it. When Finder chrases and stuck with the spinning wheel, I restart Finder with second mouse option. Then I will have to wait very long until it opens again. The stuff on the desktop dissapears and I can't draw a selection area anymore. Also other programs crashing a lot more often, like disk utility and activity monitor. I thought it was immposible to work with a computer that crashes all the time. So what I did was:
Checking my harddisk with disk utility, and recover the things
    Still stuck with the problem
    Then
    Make a TimeMachine backup.
Reboot the iMac holding the option key
    Erase harddisk
    Reinstall Moutain Lion
    Reinstall backup
Repairing disk with disk utilities again
After this, I got the same issue and it drives me crazy. I've been to two local Apple resellers and told them my problem. They told me that it probably was a hardware issue. I have no idea my self so I ask you guys if you can help me out with this.
    By the way:
one time when I restarted Finder, it wouldn't open and I got error code 600.
Last software that I installed was Paragon, I thought that it was causing the problem, so I deleted but it dind't helped. Now I got Paragon again.
Is this a software or a hardware problem and how should I fix this?
    Thanks.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Finder crashes all the time

Since last friday I got a problem. When I try to open a file or even look for the specifics of a file Finder crashes and I need to restart it. When I open the files with excel or word or something everything is OK. I never had this problem before.
Can anyone help me to solve this problem?
    Thank you.

All depends on what you mean by a clean install. If you back up your data, and ONLY your data, erase the drive, install Leopard and DO NOT use migration assistant, rather setup your account from scratch, then reinstall your applications (and do this judiciously, one at a time, test, then install the next) and reset your preferences and the info for your email and so on, and then copy your data back, then yes, that would undoubtedly fix all your problems. If you mean something else, such as using migration assistant to move everything for you, it is quite possible that it will move your problem back too.
As far as tediousness goes, it seems to me to be about 6 of one and half a dozen of the other, between a genuine clean install, and attempting to sort out what is different between your account the working account.
Running the full updater for 10.5.1 certainly won't hurt anything. Doubt it will cure your problem though.
One non-destructive thing you can try is start in safe mode (your account is working then, right?), and move your HOME Library folder to the Desktop, then restart normally. If the Finder is then working you can move things you absolutely must have from the old Library on the Desktop back into the newly created pristine home Library (probably the Mail folder and preferences, and Safari's stuff and Application Support).

  • Things I place in "Places" on sidebar in finder, disappear all the time.

Really starting to tick me off. I drag folders for jobs I'm working on in the Places area. I come back the next day, all gone, every one I added. This happened when I was on Tiger too, different mac. What's the point? I did a search and found nothing on these forums. Am I alone? Is there a solution?

AFAIK, those are controlled by Finder->Preferences->Sidebar->Places. Are Documents and the others checked? Alternatively, Finder->Help->MacHelp->search for sidebar and review the returns.

  • MacBook Air doesn't find router all the time

My MacBook Air fails to connect to the router and I have to restart the machine several times before a connection is made.

  • Ever since I upgraded to Mavericks the Finder freezes up on me all the time. Does anyone else have this problem?

I recently upgraded my 27" iMac from Mac OS 10.6.8 to Mavericks 10.0.1. Now my finder freezes all the time, usually when transfering a file from one folder to another. Most recently I simply double clicked on my Macintosh HD icon and got the spinning beach ball. I then am forced to force the computer to shut down, and start up again.

Sounds like the backup you're using to restore from is corrupt. Restoring from a corrupt backup will continue to restore the problem. I'd suggest you start fresh and delete all of your current iPhone backups(there should only be one). You can delete them here: iTunes>Preferences>Devices.

  • Where can i find the magnetic lasso tool in adobe photoshop touch? i used it all the time before but suddenly cant find it please help

i started my photoshop touch after some while and now i cant find the magnetic lasso tool it used to be there i used it all the time for editting but now i cant find it maybe i disabled it somehow. can anyone tell how to enable it again?

I honestly don't remember a magnetic lasso tool. (I've been using PS Touch since version 1.0.) The closest things I can think of are the Quick Selection Tool, the Scribble Selection Tool and the Magic Wand Tool, all located under the same set of tools (3rd set from the top in the tool panel).

  • Maverick has messed up my computer. Slow scrolling in I photo. Bookmark icons are blue all the time and not marked with the company symbols. I cannot find out how to solve this.

I switched to Mavericks two weeks ago and have had nothing but troubles. Scrolling in I photo is slow and very inaccurate. When I click and drag a photo the ones above it all flicker, making it hard to find where to put it. My bookmarks bar Icons are all blue. Before they used to show the symbol for the company they represented. Now I click on one, it changes to what I want, then a few minutes of hour later, it goes back to the blue ball, which I hate. My font size is different with every page and I have to click Zoom in all the time. I tried adjusting it in Preferences in Advance settings on the right, but this does not solve the problem permanetly. I have one web page, a hockey one, which tries to load, then I get either a black page or a white one. Driving me nuts. I need some help. Been to Apple at the store, talked to them on the phone for four hours last week. Rebuilt the I photo library with no luck. Would appreciate any help. Please Thanks. I even keep a fan behind my computer to keep it cool, that is how much I look after this baby. Some say it might be Safari? Not sure. I have little computer experience, so please it you are kind enough to reply, do not use tech talk or short forms as I will not understand any of it.

    Rick,
I have a few of your issues as well: 1) Safari popular icons are all bue making them very hard to distinguish from each other. 2) My font size is also different with each page / window.        What I have been able to find out is that in the Maverick OS - Apple removed one size of display resolution 2048 x 1152. Whether this is the cause of my 27" screen clarity & font size issues, I do not know - but it seems like a contributing factor.  Maybe help is on the way - maybe not. Cheers

Check Finderr->Preferences->General and ensure that HDs are selected for display. If so and they still don't, Reset the NVRAM/PRAM and Reset the SMC, and see if that does the trick.

  • I recently upgraded to Lion and i find that my computer is running slow and applications are crashing.  For example I have Word 2011 for Mac and it crashes all the time I end up losing my work.  It often happens when I'm in notebook trying to record.

i recently upgraded to Lion and i find that my computer is running slow and applications are crashing.  For example I have Word 2011 for Mac and it crashes all the time I end up losing my work.  It often happens when I'm in class using notebook and when I press record my computer starts thinking and it freezes.
Also, I feel that it overheats often and my battery runs out pretty quickly.  I had the macbook (black) and this never happened before.  I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if there is something with my computer.I bought my computer summer 2010, I don't think this should be happening. Please Help......

This is exactly what keeps happening to mine too.  I was at a conference taking notes, and I was
using the Notebook template, and doing some audio recording simultaneously.  About 3 hours into the conference (not consistently recording, but on and off with the sessions) my file wouldn't save anymore, saying something like "File cannot be modified while in use with another program" and "Invalid file name" when I would go back into my folder to look for it). I tried installing some updates from Microsoft, and when I restarted, I was at least able to open my old notes again, and so far it looks like the audio was working.  However, today at the conference, the same thing happened again, but I wasn't actively recording any audio (though after I had copy and pasted my second file of notes into the original, I went back to using it after re-naming it).
Does the crash happen to you under similar cirucumstances?  The update might help a little, but it is definitely not the solution.  Does anyone have any solutions?  Lion shouldn't be this buggy... I moved to Mac to get away from the garbage of bugs and compatibility issues...

  • Do I need to leave location services on all the time to use the "Find my iPhone" app?

Do I need to leave location services on all the time to use the "Find my iPhone" app?

The Find My IPhone app is used to find OTHER lost devices, it does nothing to make your device "findable".  To make it findable, you must turn on "Find My IPhone" in settings. And than you need location services on.  This however does not guarantee that you'll always find it if lost. A thief can set it to factory settings, even remove the sim card. Then it'll be unfindable.

  • I recently upgraded to ML and now I find that CS5.5 programs crash unexpectedly all the time. Help

I recently upgraded to ML and now I find that CS5.5 programs crash unexpectedly all the time. Is anyone else having this issue and what's the best way to resolve this. Help.

You might check and see if there are any Console entries about what happened when you attempted to launch a CS 5.5 app.
Adobe links its apps with the particular volume on which it is running, and altho' I can't recall specifics, I know in the past I have had to reset Adobe's settings after OS upgrade. I do recall that it's a fairly easy procedure; just don't exactly recall what it is.
BTW, CS 4 runs on Mountain Lion for me.

  • Safari quits all the time, can't find server, garbled texts

Safari can't find server, will not browse, quits all the time, garbled texts, don't know if I am using  safari and snow leopard or safari with ox lion which i have upgraded recently.

SOMETHING ABOUT THE HARD DRIVE  SYMBOL START UP?
    I don't understand this.
I also disabled third party addons, is that wrong?
If you mean Safari extensions, that's OK. Extensions are not necessary in order to use Safari.
