Finder Windows Will Not Close

I have strange behaviour appearing since I have been using Snow Leopard, and it manifests itself on at least three different Macs. I cannot find any references to it, but I intermittently have Finder windows that stay open (I cannot close them, either with the button, the Close Window command or the command-W key combination). If I log out and in again, I am able to close them, and I am also able to do it by force-quitting Finder (though once that managed to fail to restart the Finder at all, so I don't like doing that - I then started to just leave the "extra" windows open - I don't think I have ever ended up with more than two "stuck" windows). It doesn't happen to all windows, only some of them, and I have not yet been able to work out why they get "stuck". I run my Finder with the sidebar turned off, but sometimes turn it on temporarily using the keyboard to go to another computer (on our "network" of connected Macs at home). I tend to have several Finder windows open at once, using command double click to open additional ones. I am not sure, but I think the windows may get stuck when I command click the sidebar to open Finder windows showing details of other computers. No matter where I navigate to in the window once it is open, using the sidebar or not, I still cannot close it. When I try to close it, I can see the close button flash in the top left-hand corner of the window, but it doesn't close. The Close command on the menus is visible (not greyed-out) but also just makes the corner flash before failing to close the window.
Does anyone know how to shut the windows down without force-quitting the Finder? Has anyone else got similar behaviour? It is the way I use the Finder? Has anyone reported this? I could not find any similar mentions of this on the discussion forums or in any of the Support section of the Apple site.

OK, I have tried deleting the plists suggested, which actually doesn't fix it. I have also managed to find a process that seems to "break" it on Snow Leopard. The process is as follows:
• Have your Finder windows set up so that the sidebar is not shown.
• With one Finder window active, press commandaltS to open the side bar.
• Command-click on a different computer on the list (in my trial, this was a different Mac also running Snow Leopard with sharing active and me accessing it as a logged-in user with the login details already present in my Keychain) and it opens a new window with that Finder selection with the sidebar active.
• In that new window, press commandaltS to close the sidebar.
• Click on the "original" window to make it active.
• Press commandaltS to close the sidebar.
• Click back on the "new" Finder window and double click on the user folder that you are logged in as.
• Double-click on a folder within this.
Sometimes when I do this, the Finder will appear to crash out and restart (at least all the windows disappear and re-appear), and other times, this "new" window will now not close at all without restarting the Finder.
It seems a bit of a long way around, but since I don't like the sidebar cluttering up the real estate on my desktop, and I want separate windows open to copy things between different Macs in my house, I tend to do this sequence a lot, and hadn't realised this was causing the Finder windows to "stick".
Can anyone else replicate this with Snow Leopard? In other words, is it something specific about the set-up in my house, or is it more generic? I have done this with three Macs in my house, but I am not sure if it is something about my home network or something else about how I have them set up that is causing it.

  • My Safari Windows will not close

My safari windows will not close. I can use the internet fine, but safari will not allow me to close or minimize the window. This is also stopping me from shutting down my computer without removing the battery. Should I take it in to get repaired, or is it a setting on my computer that got turned on? Is anyone else having the same problem? Thank you! - Kristen

    Hi Kristen,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Which version of OS X are you using?
For possible relief, go to your Finder. There, navigate to your User Account's Library>Preferences Folder. You'll see a file com.apple.safari.plist. Move it to the desktop and restart Safari.
Please let me know if that changes anything.

  • Facetime window will not close. (iPhone 6 iOS 8.1.3)

Recently and quite frequently, after a FaceTime call has ended the window will not close out to the normal FaceTime call history screen. Even when I double tap the home button to close out apps, the FaceTime window, still showing my live face and "call with whomever as ended or ending" (it switches between ended and ending when clicking back on the window) will not swipe closed; it just moves up and right back down. I can't even swipe it closed during a live FaceTime as I could before. The only way I've been able to close out the FaceTime app is to power down the phone then turn it back on.
Anyone else experience this? Any suggestions?

    Hello nelly_eastside,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that your FaceTime application is not fully closing after a call. In this situation, I would recommend forcing the application to close and then resetting your iPhone. To complete these steps, please follow the instructions in the attached articles. Please let me know if the issue continues.

  • Finder window will not open

Finder window will not open from the dock unless I right click and click "New Finder Window".  Currently running Yosemite 10.10.3 (14D87p) public beta (iMac - 27" late 2013).
    Tried the following fixes:
    1.  Deleted finder.plist and restart.
    2.  Force quit Finder - when I do this, I get the "Finder not responding" and have to restart computer and right click for "New Finder Window".
    3.  Perform "disk permission repair".

Well I'm glad that I"m not the only one with the issue. I'm also running Yosemite 10.10.3. About 2 days ago Finder stopped responding. I have reported it via "Feedback Assistant".
I did create a new profile and it does open with a new profile. Which is kinda strange. I have also done items 1-3 listed in the original post.
I will keep an eye on this post to see if anyone solves the issue at hand.

  • CS6 & CC versions - file window will not close

Out of nowhere, PS will not close any file windows I have open. In CS6 or CC. Been fine until today.
Not with the pull down menu, or command-W, or by clicking the top left x of the file (or if not saved yet, the red ball).
Same for any filetype; jpeg, psd, tiff, etc.
Have restarted a few times, plus started PS while holding down shift-option-cmd and telling it to delete preferences.
Then it worked for one window, then immediatelyback to the no-closing behavior.
Running: MacPro, latest Mavericks, latest udated Photoshop CS6 Extended and Photoshop CC (and a slew of other Adobe apps).
Any ideas? Thanks in advance, Richard

You need to save backwards. CC 2014 (which is version 13) can save back to version 12 (which is CC). Then you would open it in version 12 (CC) and save it back to version 11 (CS6).

  • Clicking in the "Finder" window will not work

Hello everyone! I'm hoping you guys will be able to help me so I won't have to make ANOTHER trip to the Genius Bar.
Recently I had my trackpad replaced at the Apple Store because I found that it was not registering when I was clicking (however, it would allow me to "tap" on it). I just got my computer back today and I'm happy to say that my trackpad is clicking perfectly...for the most part. It's registering when I click in all the programs, Firefox, Word, etc. HOWEVER, whenever I click on the "Finder" window icon on the bottom of my screen, my clicks aren't working. I can click outside of the box and to other "devices" or "places" in the window, but when I'm trying to click on "documents", "music", "pictures" etc within the "finder" window, it doesn't let me click (even when I change it to "tap" clicking, it won't even open the folders). Does anyone know why this is happening? I'm hoping it's an easy fix so I won't have to go all the way to the Apple Store, however, I'm a teacher and I often use "MY DOCUMENTS" frequently, so me not being able to click on it is quite aggrivating.
    Thanks everyone!

  • Items in Finder window will not show alphabetically while in columns view

I am running a Mac Pro Yosemite 10.10.1
a couple of weeks ago I had some kind of glitch since then it takes a long time to save items having a continuous spinning beach ball.
Also in the Finder window items will no longer listed alphabetically while in columns view  they list fine in the other views.
Is there an easy way to fix or  could I fix it by reinstalling the operating system?

    Hi tundrabob,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it sounds like Finder takes a while to save and you need to sort a window. I would recommend that you read these articles, they may be helpful in troubleshooting your issue.

  • The "none of your preferred networks are available" setup window will not close

I (obviously) am set up on the internet but there is a setup window that stays on top of the screen saying none of my preferred networks are available and will not go away.  My mouse will not click in it to cancel, choose a network etc.  How do I get rid of this?
    Thank you,

Is this in system preferences/networks? If so try a force quit press  OPTION  COMMAND  ESC  from the menu that pops up select the offender and clcik force quit.
    Try rebooting.

  • Finder Window Will Not Auto Scroll

I have one window on a separate partition that has a folder which contains 1800 sub-folders. For months now (through several OS upgrades) this window consistently misbehaves. If I open the window in List View and then type say "Z" on the keyboard, the scroll button on the right jumps to the bottom (which is normal); however, the list of folders itself does not scroll in the window? If I then click on the scroll button that has moved to the bottom, the list then syncs with the scroll button position.
I have tried repairing permissions and even deleting the DS Store files using Xspport - still no fix.
    Any ideas?

  • I converted an album to a slideshow: I exported it, selecting itunes as an export option.  A window comes up that says iphoto at the top, but nothing happens.  Also, this window will not close with the red button - I have to "force quit" and reopen iphoto

I can't seem to export a slideshow from iPhoto.  I go through the export routine, but an iPhoto page comes up with other slideshows I've sent to iTunes, but nothing happens.  I've waited, hoping something was happening, but nothing does.  Further, once this page is up, you can't click out of it with the red button - to get it off the screen, I have to "force quit".

With Firefox 23 and TabMixPlus 0.4.1.0 installed, an additional box is added to the Tabs options panel that allows 3 options for the tab bar:
*One is to '''Always''' hide the tab bar. I do not know whether future versions of TabMixPlus will remove that option. I have tested in Firefox 23 and it is possible to completely hide the tab bar regardless of the number of tabs open.
