Finder would not load

i have a client that is running os 10.2.8. When he booted up, finder would not load. It loaded for a second then closed and repeated this indefinitely. I could access any of the items in the dock and those applications would open and run correctly, but the finder never seemed to load. I eventually fixed the problem by reinstalling 10.2 and that fixed the error. However this gave rise to another peculiar symptom. I could not install the combo update for 10.2.8. It would start and then just fail and ask me to try again?
Does anyone know what might have caused his finder not to load properly?
how might i install 10.2.8?
O and if it matters, he was running all of this on an old powerbook G4.

Jag and Puma were notorious for having permissions problems. They have decreased in Panther and I understand that Tiger is even better. When the system that is booted won't do what is supposed to do then try the install disk.
X is a strange beast. I don't know if it still happens but in the earlier days it was frequently necessary to not only erase the hard drive but zero it. Somehow the left over files were recognized (or something) by an install or clone and raised havoc with the new system.
It's weird because without a directory, which erase is supposed to do, how can it still find files???
When I have problems cloning to a partition with stuff on it, I erase it and the clone proceeds but I always wonder if some left overs are still being used somehow.

10.2.8 Finder does not load after getting into OS X

I am pretty sure this happened to a lot of people, as I have read many many messages on this issue.
My computer is a Powerbook 867 with 128built in DDR and 512 added.
40Gb internal HDD and a 40GB firewire 3G ipod (the old 3G).
Here's the problem:
Last night just when I finishsed watching some divx on VLC running on 10.2.8, I quitted VLC using apple+Q, then closed the finder window i opened with apple+W. They both closed, but then the finder just did not respond (or have quitted). There isn't a little triangle below my finder icon on the dock. Everything else on the dock works perfectly fine. Desktop icons have disappeared.
Now I have restarted, nothing helps; went on apple discussion and found some "HELPFUL" solutions - deleting the finder preferences. First how was I suppose to delete it? ok... I installed a 10.2.3 on my ipod and boot it through there, also did a repair permission on my internal HDD. Finally deleted the com.apple.finder.plist.. So I booted up using my internal again. But still... finder DOES NOT LOAD after I got into my OS X.
Please if anyone can give me a solution to this problem!
P.S. the finder on my ipod is working fine. AND I do not want to reinstall OS X on my interal because I only did it last week after it went to service after a HDD fail (it has been replaced).

Check System Preferences - Accounts
Choose you account - login items: If iTunesHelper
shows up - remove it it will prevent re-installation.
It did not have iTunes in the list, just mail and iCal alarm. Deadlines and emails are vital in my home office.
Now that I think about it, adding Mail to the list was the only thing that I had changed to the computer when this happened, but I can't imagine how that would alter permission to install on the OS.

Take another look. A (nominal) 10 GB hard drive only has about 9.31 GB to begin with. The OS takes up some room, as do other applications.
Please check out how much space has been used and how much remains available.

You recently updated iTunes to v.11.4? This message has popped up on many a Mac screen when this version was first made available, because this kext was obviously faulty.
You should try to download iTunes 11.4 again from Apple's website: the new version bears the same name, but this kernel extension has been updated, and the issues it was causing are now a thing of the past.
Should solve your problem, too...

What is the best/easiest way for me to put all the pages back into iWeb on my laptop so that I can update them. Because iWeb is so easy and I'm stumped when anything starts HTML-ing me!

There is no best or easy way to get webpages back into iWeb because you cannot import webpages.
Copy/paste the text and objects from your existing pages is the only way.
But just to be sure, check the domain file in this folder:
~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/
(where ~ is our Home directory) and see if it still there. Double click the file to open it in iWeb.
If it fails, then you're out of luck.

Non-native printer driver would not load

Hi,
I have a PowerPC G4 and two printers, an Epson Photo R220 and an Epson C60. The OS is 10.4.8. Several days ago I reset my printing (using the printer setup utility) and then tried to reload the Epson drivers. The drivers from Epson would not load. The only drivers that do load are the ones that apparently come with the OS and are labeled with ' ... Gimp-print v5.0.0-beta2'. These drivers do not produce the same quality of printing as the Epson drivers I had before.
Downloading the most recent driver from Epson did not help, neither did any order of resetting the printer utility, re-installing, and rebooting the computer.
The gang at the local Apple Store could not solve the problem either!
Any suggestions?

What I came to was that I needed to uninstall the direct usb driver set up I had made for my printer and then start from scratch. While I was doing this (which turned out to be very difficult) with an HP tech he mentioned an HP wireless printer that he thought would work much better for what I wanted.
So I exchanged the HP officejet Pro 5400 for a DeskJet 6980 and this is a great solution, because I don't even have to connect through the Airport with a USB cable. It's all wireless and the quality of the printer is good and price is reasonable. Set up was difficult but HP has good tech support even for mac and they helped me out.
Now if any in my office wants to add this printer it's available as a bonjour printer and they don't even have to load to drivers.

I used to own a macbook then i got an iMac and copied everyting to it. now when i use iphoto or other programs music from my itunes library would not load. only the content purchesed from itunes store. any one can help?

Which version of GarageBand are you using?
You should be able to drag iTunes songs directly from the Media Browser to the track area in GarageBand. There are two exceptions - you cannot drag protected songs to GarageBand (with Kind: Protected AAC) and you cannot drag songs, that are not locally stored on your Mac but in iCloud.
All there songs should be visible in the Media browser and you should be abe to drag and drop them, at least in GarageBand 10.

The 301 error code would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced. This is also consistent with the start-up issue and is a pretty common occurence after a 'fall'..
If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - you can check your warranty status Here.

Websites would not load unless I move my cursor for Firefox RC

Whenever I load a website, I notice that unless i move my cursor a little, the website would not load. I didnt notice this for previous versions of FF though.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
* Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

Photoshop files locking up Finder (preview not loading) and empty photoshop files... 18mb!

Hi all,
We've been having some problems with all of our Photoshop files recently. It seems to be a problem that's been duplicated throughout during the design progression.
When using finder to navigate through our design folders, it often locks up for 5 - 10 seconds per file while finder tries to load the preview thumbnails (and fails, showing just the psd icon). I checked compatibility was checked on save as. I also checked the colour profile was being embedded. On some files it wasn't so I checked this, but still having the same slowdown.
As a test I then deleted all the layers in the doc, saved it again - and even though the file only had one blank layer - it was 18mb in size!
I then made a new document of the same resolution, saved it - and boom. 120kb or so and preview works fine.
I then opened one of the problem PSD's with all the layers - dragged them over to a new document of the same size, saved it - and the file and preview in finder works fine.
Obviously there's something of around 18mb in weight in all of our old files that is causing a real issue with finder and previews. Other than layers (as there are none) - what could it be? We're using a mix of cs6 / cc and cc 2014.
Any help on this would be appreciated!

OK, that means that the Finder is having problems with that folder. That could be due to corrupt disk data structures, or you could be hitting some of the known (and not yet fixed) bugs in MacOS's Finder related to thumbnails and metadata parsing.
As for file size - other metadata (especially image history, and sometimes color profiles) can really add to the file size.

Photoshop stopped working when I tried to download CC which would not load either!!!

I AM VERY FRUSTRATED. First...My CS5 would not read RAW on my new Canon T3i camera so I tried to find a fix. Then...that did not work s I decided to upgrade to the CC! Well after trying to get it to load I am told the I need to close the "Bridge.exe" in Photoshop CS5. I can't find it. After a huge lot of frustration I decided that I would delete and reload all of the Photoshop programs!!! Well that made it even worse...NOTHING WORKS! THIS IS MY TRAVEL COMPUTER AND I NEED TO BE ABLE TO WORK ON MY IMAGES.
I NEED T TALK TO SOMEONE WHO CAN WORK WITH ME. So Far I have spent a lot of time trying to get the help I need as your site is not user friendly and I don't like "Blogs" with information from someone who can't help with my problem directly. Also I upgraded to Element 11 and can't get that to work either. So far I have spent a lot of money and I am not happy.

Random pages would not load on Safari

My computer needed updating last week, and I downloaded the suggested update. Ever since, Safari "load" wheel keeps spinning in all tabs regardless if a page has actually loaded or not. However, there's a bigger problem: many websites I normally visit would randomly not load at all.
The process looks something like that: I open a new tab, enter an address, click Return, and the address just hangs there without any progress. I close the tab, re-open it, re-enter the address, and this time it may or may not load - it's all quite random.
Any help would be appreciated!

From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...

Since you are running Snow Leopard, *make sure Safari is opening in 32-bit mode, not 64*. Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. Also, (in that same window) *make sure Safari is NOT running in Rosetta.*
  Web pages now include a small icon or 'favicon' which is visible in the address bar and next to bookmarks. These icons take up disk space and slow Safari down. It is possible to erase the icons from your computer and start fresh. *To delete Safari's icon cache using the Finder, open your user folder, navigate to ~/Library/Safari/ and move this file "webpageIcons.db to the Trash.*
Relaunch Safari.
