Fire wire Harddisc crashes when first on G4 later on Macpro
Its the third harddisc now which i have formatted and filled with 20 GB of files with my Powermac G4 (Dual 1,25 GHZ Power PC G4 1MB L3-Cache pro Processor 1,75 GB DDR SDRAM) . When I eject it and plug it in at a new Macpro 2x Quadcore 2,8 GHz it is mounted. As soon as I copy files to it the system freezes. After a restart the Firewire Harddisc will not appear any more. At none of my Computers. Also Data Rescue is not able to identify any connected Hard disc.
It happened two times. Both Hard disc drives can not be mounted any more.
a brody! Thanks for your fast answers! I thought about this possibillity, too. But I didn't want to use the Hard discs internal . In both Macs I already have internal drives. I wanted to use one external harddisc on each Mac for backups and storage of big picture files.
The Firewires appeared first, they vanished/ crashed when files were copied to them at the newer MacPro.
There must be a bad incompatibility between the Powermac and Macpro. That sould be known!? I can't believe I'm the only one with this trouble.

I'm using iTunes 10.6.1 on an iMac 2,66 Ghz intel core Duo with8GB DDR3 and Lion 10.7.3 I have 260000 mp3 stored on a My Book 3 TB external fire wire 800 Drive - when I play songs I get short interruptions every 20 to 30 seconds. Can't iTunes handle that number of songs?

Safai crashes when first launched
I am not sure if this is the correct place to put this question, so I apologize in advance if I am not in the right place.
I work for a school district that uses Safari 2.0.4 on eMac’s running 10.4.7 and 10.4.8 and the students use network home folders.
When the students log in and launch Safari, it will immediately crash (Safari crash.log below). It will continue to crash until the student logs out and logs back in. Most of the time it will work fine from there on out, but sometimes it still crashes. In WGM, the Internet preference is set to have Safari as the default browser (FireFox is loaded on the computers also) and the homepage and search page preferences are set.
I have not been able to find any discernable pattern in the crashes. It won’t happen to an entire class, then it will happen on five machines the next class. I have them move to a different machine and it works fine. When the next class comes in and logs into the machines that just crashed, they work fine, but a different three crash when Safari is launched.
I am thought that it might be the cache files and am looking for a way to have them removed automatically when the user quits Safari or logs out, but I am not sure if this is the right path or not.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

We were also having an issue with Safari frequently crashing under our network home directory setup. My solution was to make Camino the default browser. Apple should keep Safari more up-to-date instead of waiting for Leopard to give us Safari v3... see http://webkit.org/ for the latest version of Safari. This may not answer the issue you're having, but it's a quick fix to install Camino with ARD and then in WGM set it as the default browser, enter your desired homepage, and pull Safari out of the dock. -
Why does my macbook pro crash when I connect my external hard drive?
When I connect my external hard drive to my macbook pro (with fire wire) it crashes my computer... Any thoughts or help??
Thanks for the response. I tried both methods with the same end result.
I'm in safe mode now. It doesnt show up as being plugged in. It worked fine when connected with the USB-I went to disk utilities and repaired the disk.
I tried to plug in with the firewire, again and it shut down my computer..
Any other suggestions? -
I have tried several times to test my fire wire port on this mac mini. I tnever does anything differently than boot up.
I am hooking up an audio interface and cant seem to get it to recognize the unit. I have tried testing the port, different cables and even purchased a 2nd interface thinking my original was the problem
Help
Mac Mini
M box pro
pro tools 10
ChaseJust for the record, I have friends that have the exact same setup as I do. It works flawlessly. They are using the same OS in both pro tools and apple. This seems to be a hardware connection issue. My Mac Mini does not recognize the M Box Pro audio interface I am using.
I have 2 m box pros doing the same thing. I have used 3 fire wire cables.
I first want to test the fire wire port on the mac mini, I need to know if it works at all. I tested it once and have not been able to conduct the test again. I believe this is some sort of internal set up issue. All of the software and hardware is identical to what several friends have. -
Importing Help from fire wire hard drive
Hi
I have a Canon HV20 and a My Book 500 Gig Hard drive and I'm using a Ibook G4.
Here's my Problem , I only have one Firewire Input so I Plugged My Book In it and Put the Cameras firewire in the Hard drives fire wire out and When I try to Import Final cut Express can never find that it is plugged in to my Hard drive but when I go to Imovie It Finds it Easy.
So how can I import My footage directly to my Hard drive with out using Imovie?hey there Michealbak, welcome to Discussions,
i've used a Belkin Firewire hub for 5 years w/ no issues because i needed more Firewire ports on my G4 iMac connecting FW audio, Sony cam & ext FW HDDs. then i used it briefly on my MacBook for the same purpose as you, needed to connect a FW HDD & my video cam. as Tom states Canon cams can have issues w/ multiple devices on the same FW buss. the hub may or may not help, as others have reported issues w/ the MyBook line of HDDs.
good luck -
Computer not recognizing camera is plugged in (fire wire)
Help! I need to down load some video from a MiniDV to my computer ASAP -- I'm new at this, got the right fire wire cable but when it's plugged in and turned on, the computer is not registering that there's a camera -- it's a Panasonic miniDV.
Hi
my list
Cable
• Sure that You use the FireWire - USB will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin FW one ?
• Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
Camera
• Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
• Toogle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
• Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
Connections
• Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
Mac
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
(Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minmum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.
SoftWare
• Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
• Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
• FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
Using WHAT versions ? .
• Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
• QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
• iMovie 8 (7.1.?) ?
• iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape.
• Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
• If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE Mac OS Exchange formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)
from LKN 1935.
Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935
from Karsten.
in addition to Bengt's excellent '9 yards of advice' ..
camera set to 'Play' , not rec/computer/etc.?
camera not on battery, but power-line?
did your Mac 'recognize' this camera before...?
a technical check.
connect camera, on, playback, fw-connected...
click on the Blue Apple, upper left of your screen ..
choose 'About../More..
under Firewire.. what do you read..?
More
• FileVault - Secure that it’s turned off
• Network storage - DOESN’T WORK
• Where did You store/capture/import Your project ?
External USB hard disk = Bad Choise / FireWire = Good
If so it has to be Mac OS Extended formatted
----> UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange is NOT Working for VIDEO !

FINAL CUT CRASH - FIRE WIRE PROBLEM
Alright, this is just my last shot.
I use final cut pro 3 to edit videos, and a miniDV sony camera too. (I even bought new fire wire cables to double check the problem)
Always worked with them, no sweat.
But once I upgraded my iBook with the latest OS version TIGER, my nightmare started. My iBook is the second latest one, still on warranty .....
Final Cut crashes every time I open the LOG AND CAPTURE window. No way, it's impossible .... I tried to re-install the software. The only way (it seems really weird and odd) is to use iMovie to import them.
It's very crazy. I tried the same in a friends computer, and apparently is his, just works fine.OHH Yes absolutly, I send my originals CD's to apple. I pay 49 dolars for the Crossgrade and Then I install everythiing. I have MY oun lisence all original. But I dont know what is going on.

Video capture stops when connected to FCP using fire wire
Captured video using Sony VX2000 using 48 khz and 16 bit audio stereo mode. Using Sony Premium miniDV tapes.
Video plays back fine when not connected via firewire to G4 dual 867 with 2 GB Ram.
Using default capture preset of 48 khz 16 bit, connect fire wire and video capture randomly stops stating it has lost connection or is missing capture data. If I switch to just plain capture using non controllable device, I have the same issue except the tape keeps playing but FCP stops capturing.
Tried other tapes and no problem.
Tried other fire wire cable and no problem.
I am having problems only on this tape and when connected.
When not connected it plays back on the camera with no stopping.
Steve BowersTo answer your questions--
Dumping preferences usually does not cause problems. More likely you updated some part of your system or are having other hardware issues.
No updates or hardware issues. The original problem (discussed in another thread) was one where the video is skewed inward on the lower right corner. Apple instructed me to dump the preferences and start from scratch. That I did and now I am experiencing problems I did not have before. If it is hardware problems, then I guess it is just coincidental that FCP is just now presenting problems. However, the other problems I am having are software related and does not involve the camera.
What software versions of FCP, OSX and QT are you running and have you updated any of them recently?
FCP version-5.1.2
OSX-10.4.8
QT-7.1.3
Is there anything special about the 'difficult' tape?
No.
Did you record it?
Yes
Was it the last of a bunch?
Not sure. I buy bulk so this was one in a box of 5 that is was in a case of 50 boxes.
Are you using the same camera as the playback device?
Yes
Does it work if you use another computer?
Not sure what you mean. I have only one MAC G4.
Was it recorded using another camera in a non-DV format?
No. Playback is through same camera is was recorded on. -

My albums and slideshows disappeared from the left column when I ejected a Canon camera after a download. My version of iPhoto '08 (V7.1.5(378)) had just crashed when I first connected the Canon camera to download. I restarted iPhoto.....successfully downloaded 22 photos, and ejected Canon camera, upon which albums & slideshows highlighted blue and disappeared from the left column. The photos still seem to be under the EVENTS and PHOTOS in the LIBRARY. Any thoughts?
Restore from your back up.

The description is in the title: Premiere Pro CC Crashing when Scrolling Through Sequence in Timeline - Audio Waveform Goes Blank First.
Just started today, won't stop crashing now after a minute or two, and always does it when I scroll through the timeline of a sequence. The audio waveform goes blank first.

I have I pad first gen and have laded King App Candy Crush and all of sudden they keep crashing when I try playing them, any suggestions. king Forum was no help.
One of the basic troubleshooting steps for apps that continue to crash is to delete them and reinstall them. but you don't want to do that because you will lose all of your progress and have to start all over again. On the other hand, if the apps are unplayable anyway, what good is the progress that you have achieve if the apps won't work?
I would start with real basic things. Close all other apps on your iPad, reset the device and then see if that makes any difference. Since you are running iOS 5, you close apps by double tapping the home button to get to the multitasking tray at the bottom of the screen, hold down on an app icon until all of the icons wiggle, then tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the icon. Close all of the apps in the multitasking try this way. Swipe to the left to get to each and every app and close them all. After they have all been close, tap the home button twice.
Now reset your iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple Logo appears on the screen. Let go of the buttons when you see the Apple logo and let the iPad start up. Try Candy Crush or one of the other games and see how they work for you now. -
So firefox 4 crashes when opening in-browser pdfs and a whole host of other sites, even with no addons running.
I've found a fix: start in safe mode, then close and open in normal mode. This always solves the problem.
But '''why?''' What is causing this incredibly annoying problem. I went from happily browsing at high speeds (firefox 3.6) to suddenly finding myself propping my head on my arm, looking at a jammed firefox, trying not to go crazy, for about 2 minutes until it unjams (for pdfs - for the other sites it doesnt unjam) - and the pdf page ends up just black. God forbid I press F5 again lest I want to relive the experience.
This only happens on my work laptop. It's a top of the line laptop. It connects via a remote VPN. I'm not sure if that's relevant but I'm trying to give as much info as possible.1. You have a pre-release Beta 1 version of what will become Firefox 4 in like 5 or 6 months. Unless you are intending to test it for flaws and report those flaws to help in the development process, don't use it.
2. Did you create a new Profile for 4.0b1, and are you using that Profile with it? ''That isn't done automatically when you install 4.0b1, and those of us who have been doing the "testing" for many years consider a new Profile as the basis of doing out testing.''
IMO, Mozilla is making a huge mistake by directly offering these beta versions to the general public.
Also IMO. if you want to play with 4.0b1, use the Portable Firefox 4.0beta version to minimize any conflicts with a currently installed version of Firefox, and to eliminate the need for creating a new Profile for 4.0 Beta #:
Download Firefox Portable Test to your hard drive and double click the '''FirefoxPortableTest_4.0_Beta_#_English.paf.exe''' file. The entire installation (including a new Profile for "Portable") will be self-contained in the \Program Files\FirefoxPortableTest\ folder and won't interfere with an "official" version that you already have installed. Your Profile will be in the \Program Files\FirefoxPortableTest\Data\profile\ folder.
The "down side" is that Firefox Portable won't launch if any other version of Firefox is already running.

Unable to mount external fire-wire hard drive - help, please!
After working the last couple of days to resolve the failure of an internal drive, now one of my external drives (LaCie fire-wire) will not mount. I was using it to back up the bad internal drive, and probably forgot to eject the drive before turning it off; don't know if this really makes any difference, but just in case...
If I use Disk Utility I can see the LaCie drive, but it will not mount.
When I tried to verify the drive got the following message -
Invalid sibling link
The volume LaCie HD needs to be repaired
1 HFS volume checked - volume needs repair
Next I tried to repair the drive, and was told -
Invalid sibling link
Volume check failed
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
This is where I stopped. I read another post somewhere in the forums about making a disk image of the drive, but I'm afraid of making things worse by proceeding without knowing what I'm doing. Any ideas on how I can somehow retrieve the data in the LaCie drive?
Once again, thanks in advance for any help!Hi! Diskwarrior is always better at repairing drive directories which constitute 99% of all drive problems. I run it fairly regularly usually once a month. BUT I always run it at the first sign of weirdness or problems AND every time I have had a power failure or a forced restart or shutdown because those events usually always damage the drive's directory. Often even though the directory is damaged OSX can go ahead and mount it and it will work ok but eventually the damage builds every time one of those events occur and finally there is a failure to mount or boot.
