Firefox ( =1.0.5) + Java Plugin (1.4.2_08) can't run applets

Hi
I'm using gentoo linux and i've been using firefox with the sun java plugin for some time without any problems. however, in the last few weeks there suddenly appeared the following problem with the java plugin:
Whenever I try to open a page with an applet, there is the java logo, and after some time, there's a red "X" in the place of the applet. When I subsequently open the java console, I always get the same error message (Encyclo.class contains the applet):

I have no Idea what could be wrong. Please help.

One of my colleagues found a workaround.
This problem is maybe related to selinux.
If you disable selinux, applets will work well.
[ To disable selinux find the line beginning with "SELINUX="
in your /etc/sysconfig/selinux file and change it to "SELINUX=disabled".
And then you perhaps have to reboot. ]

I am using Mandriva Linux now.
But I am using Firefox 3.6.8, but I cannot install java plugin in it.
Can anyone please help me how to install it?

The plugins folder in the Firefox installation folder doesn't exist by default. There is no default plugin in Firefox 4, so that folder would be empty and in thus not included. If you want to use that location then you need to create a plugins folder.
    Did you try /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins ?

Nope - you need the 32bit Java to go with the 32bit Firefox if you want Java to run

  • Firefox won't accept java plugin

I need to get firefox to accept a java plugin to print to my dymo labeler in Amazon seller "scan and label"
Amazon support told me to download java 7 which I did and it did not work, then I was told to go into the java settings under the "Advanced" tab and enable "Mozilla family" for "Default java for browsers" Every time I try to do this this setting will not save and I think that the firefox browser is stopping it.
Amazon support also says that after doing this I should be able to go to firefox add-ins and I will see it under plugins and I cannot.
I think that firefox is blocking this. Is there a way to unblock this?
Using64 bit OS, windows 7 and and the latest firefox 30.0

There has been a change in the Java security settings, see:

  • I am running 10.5.8, and just updated my java to java 5 update10. Now my firefox is missing the Java plugin, and I can't load any Java applet at all. When I try it with Safari, it hangs when certain Java applet loads. HELP!!!

Suddenly my Java plugin is missing and i can't load any Java with Firefox at all, even though i have it enabled in the browser! i've tried loading in java embedding plugin, but it doesn't work. what should i do???

It's not in Tools> Add-ons >plugins?  Should be Java Plug-in 2 for NPAPI browsers 13.5.0. What are you seeing there? I don't think it's called the embedding plugin any longer.
Might try getting the Firefox 5 standalone application. Trash the current one and replace it. Doing this won't affect your Profile or any settings.
    http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
If it's enabled, how can it be missing?
If this doesn't work, ask here. No need to register. Make sure you put (Mac) in the title.

EDIT. Oops, may be different for 10.5.8. Was thinking recent Java update for 10.6. But try installing a new app anyway. In the past, this got me the latest Java plugin.

  • Firefox will not recognize java plugin that has been installed and worked 1 day ago.

I have an IMac with OSX 10.5.8, Firefox 5.0, One day ago it worked fine, today when going to a specific site that requires Java, Firefox will not recognize that Java is installed. I checked for updates and there are none. Java is installed and the site works fine with Safari, which requires Java as well. How can i get Firefox to recognize Java installation.

Apple has removed support for the Java Plugin2 with the latest Java Update 10 for OS X 10.5 Java version, so the Java plugin is no longer available for Firefox versions and other browsers like Google Chrome that require the Java Plugin2.
The Java Plugin2 plugin is still there, but he softlink to it has been removed with this update, so Firefox doesn't find the plugin.
There will be fix for this in the next release (Firefox 5.0.1 or 6), so that Firefox will find the plugin again.
I don't know if all Java applets will still be working on OS X 10.5 with that JP2 plugin (Apple recommends updating to OS X 10.6 for OS X 10.5 users with an Intel Mac).

  • Since I installed yosemite I get a window to install legacy JAVA SE 6 RUNTIME and can't run ADOBE Illustrator Cs6 without it .

So anything LEGACY means it is probably not supported and chocked full of security  issues.
what JAVA flavor do I need to install?
    WHat do I do ?
I have a lot of work to do...

    Hi,
    Try this:
Download Java for Mac OS X 2014-001 from http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1572.
Install the Java update using the downloaded .dmg file.
When installation is complete, a Software Update dialog box appears. The dialog box asserts that Java SE 6 Runtime is required to run Adobe Illustrator CS6.
In the Software Update dialog box, click Install.
    Launch Illustrator.
In Adobe Illustrator CS6 some plug-ins has dependency on Java, therefore Java is required for them to function properly.

  • Firefox is not detecting Java plugin

A few weeks ago I installed updates and updated to Firefox 3.6.13 on OpenSuse 11.1 (yeah, I know, I should upgrade, but I'm lazy). No more Java functionality for me. So I installed a new version. I followed all of the instructions on this page (I've tried both from the RPM and the self-extracting file and get the same results either way): http://java.com/en/download/help/linux_install.xml but I got nothing. Next I tried this: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/manual-plugin-install-linux-136395.html The /firefox/plugins folder (which I should note I have installed in my home directory) shows the symbolic link. Still not registering in Firefox, at all. When I go to about:plugins, I'm not seeing anything about JRE.
At this point I'm at a loss. I'm ashamed to admit that as long as I've been using Linux, I still know very little about it as I only use the very basic functions on my machine (email, internet, office applications; no need for much other than that). But I've never run up against this problem before, and I'm not sure what I'm missing here about what I did wrong. I have this sneaking suspicion it's something simple, but...
    thanks!

Make sure that you create a symlink to the Java JP2 plugin (libnpjp2.so) that current Firefox version need.

OpenSUSE 11.1 has reached end of live, so you won't be getting any updates as you probably noticed.

  • I have downloaded Firefox 5 but I keep getting told that I can't run certain programs (egEvernote Web Clipper) because I am using Firefox 3

I accepted the offer to download Firefox 5 and followed all the instructions. Everything seemed to be ok until I tried to install the Evernote Web Clipper. I was then told that I was running Firefox 3.xxx...
If I have downloaded Firefox 5 how do I make sure I am running 5 and not my earlier version?

    Please do the following.
Click '''Help '''| '''Check For Updates'''. The option to update should appear and version 3.6.17 should download and install.
However, sometimes things go pear-shaped and you get version 3.5.19. If that happens, repeat the same steps to update to 3.6.17.
Once you have 3.6.17 installed, you'll get the opportunity to update to the current version which is 4.0.1 ''Please don't do that for the moment because you first of all have to update your plugins''. To do the latter, please do the following.
Go to http://www.java.com/en/ and install the latest version of Java.
Update Adobe Shockwave for Director via http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/
    Update Adobe Flash via http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
    Update Adobe Reader via http://get.adobe.com/reader/?promoid=BUIGO
For security details regarding the Adobe updates, see: http://www.adobe.com/support/security/advisories/apsa11-02.html
Once you've updated all those, go to '''Help '''| '''Check For Updates '''again to update to version 4.0.1

  • Java Plugin does not initialize

    Hi,
I am trying to run a web based tool called Infoview through firefox and it involves java plugin, but when I try to create a new report in InfoView using firefox browser it says no suitable plugins found.
I do not know how to fix this. Currently I have Java 6 update 26 on my system. It is a Windows XP 32 bit machine.
    Please suggest
    Thanks,
    Rishabh

I suspect that the link you provide is out of date. First, there is no plugins subdirectory in the distributed Firefox 12 tar, and the ~/.mozilla/plugins directory is empty, yet I do have plugins for Adobe Reader, Citrix, and Shockwave Flash. Furthermore I did the find command that the page recommends (as root) and there is no instance of a null plugin on my system. Furthermore I did try placing a link to the java plugin in all of the recommended places with not change in effect, java is simply not appearing as a plugin.
So, in answer to your question, where would that location be for Firefox 12?
And, not trying to get to snotty, but any links to out of date help pages will be ignored.

  • Java plugin support discontinued

According to some techinical articles released by Apple, Java update 10 for OSX 10.5 no longer supports the java plugin.  As a result, java will no longer work with Firefox or Chrome unless users update to OSX 10.6.  Although there may be valid technical reasons for doing this, it is really inexcusable that this was not CLEARLY communicated to users in plain and simple language before the update was uploaded.  Here is part of the explanation released on one of Apple's mailing lists (but not the general public):
"Firefox and Chrome users are currently unsupported on PPC since the current versions of those browsers are = Intel-only. Anyone with an Intel Mac should upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard to continue to receive any updates at all.
Plugin2 in it's current state was barely usable when run under J2SE 5.0 anyway, so in the end, anyone who was relying on applets on Leopard was probably already using Safari anyway."
I think it's pretty arrogant that Apple assumes no one using Leopard was using FF or Chrome to browse sites supporting java and to not even bother informing them that support was going to be discontinued.
    Just saying....

The problem is summarized and a workaround is given in https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=668639 (comments 4 and 8):
    Quote:
This bug is entirely Apple's fault.  For some reason Update 10 removes
the JavaPlugin2_NPAPI.plugin soft link from /Library/Internet
Plugin-Ins/ (and also the ability, in the Java Preferences utility, to
choose whether to run applets "in their own process" or "within the
    browser process").
JavaPlugin2_NPAPI.plugin is still present on the system, where the
Java Embedding Plugin can still find it.  So Java still works in FF
3.6.18 and earlier.  And so this bug is relatively easy for a somewhat
    sophisticated user to work around:
Just do the following at a Terminal prompt.  For it to work, you'll
need to be logged in using an account with administrator privileges.
    $ cd "/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/"
    $ sudo ln -s /System/Library/Java/Support/Deploy.bundle/Contents/Resources/JavaPlugin2_NPAPI .plugin

Now realised that this plugin is located in /path/to/java/jre/lib/i386/, so a symbolic link was created. Documentation should be changed accordingly.

  • Steps to create your own self signed certificate with java plugin working

You need two tools that comes with your jdk which are keytool and jarsigner.
Steps explain below in detail. Don't use netscape signtool, it will NEVER work!
    * keytool -genkey -keyalg rsa -alias tstkey -keypass 2br2h2m -dname "cn=Test Object Signing Certificate, o=AI Khalil, ou=Java Products, c=AU"
    cn = Certificate name
    o = organistation
    ou = organistation unit
c = country (first two letters)
If don't put the -dname, you can fill it line by line.
The -keypass has to be verify at the end, and you have to wait for it to create the rsa signing keys.
On NT by default it will put the alias information at D:\WINNT\Profiles\Administrator (if log in as administrator) with the default file called ".keystore". Windows 98 etc, don't know, search for .keystore
file. When you update it, check for the timestamp change and you know if you at the right spot.
You can store your alias information via the -storepass option to your current directory you work on, if you don't want to update the default .keystore file?
The .keystore contains a list of alias so you don't have to do this process again and again.
Another tip if you want your certificate encryption validity to be more than the default one month is simply
add the -validity <valDays>, after the -genkey option, to make your certificate usage for encryption to last much longer.
Note: You MUST use the -keyalg rsa because for starters the rsa encyption alogorthim is supported on ALL browsers instead of the default DSA and the other one SHA. Java plugins must work with the RSA algorthim when signing applets, else you will get all sorts of weird errors :)
Do not use signtool because thats a browser dependant solution!! Java plugin is supposed to work via running it owns jre instead of the browser JVM. So if you going to use netscape signtool, it starts to become a mess! ie certificate will install, but applet won't start and give you funny security exception errors :)
    * keytool -export -alias tstkey -file MyTestCert.crt
It will read the alias information in the .keystore information picking up the rsa private/public keys info and
create your self sign certificate. You can double click this certificate to install it? But don't think this step is needed but maybe for IE? Someone else can check that part.
If you make a mistake with the alias, simply keytool -delete -v -alias <your alias key>
If not in default .keystore file, then simply keytool -delete -v -alias <your alias key> -keystore <your keystore filename>
    * Put your classes in your jar file, my example is tst.jar.
    * jarsigner tst.jar tstkey
Sign your testing jar file with your alias key that supports the RSA encryption alogorthim.
    * jarsigner -verify -verbose -certs tst.jar
    Check that its been verified.
The last step is the most tricky one. Its to do with having your own CA (Certified Authority) so you don't
have to fork out money straight away to buy a Verisign or Twarte certificate. The CA listing as you see in
netscape browsers under security/signers, is NOT where the plugin looks at. The plugin looks at a file called
CACERTS. Another confusion is that the cacerts file is stored in your jre/lib/security AND also at your
JavaSoft/Jre/<Java version>/lib/security. When you install the Java plugin for the first time in uses your
JavaSoft folder and its the cacerts file that has to be updated you add your own CA, because thats where
the plugin look at, NOT THE BROWSER. Everything about plugin is never to do with the browser!! :)
    * keytool -import -file MyTestCert.crt -alias tstkey -keystore "D:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.3.1\lib\security/cacerts"
Off course point to your own cacerts file destination.
Password to change it, is "changeit"
Before you do this step make a copy of it in its own directory in case you do something silly.
This example will add a CA with alias of my key called "tstkey" and store to my example destination.
    * keytool -list -v -keystore "E:/jdk/jdk1.3/jre/lib/security/cacerts"
List to see if another CA is added with your alias key.
Your html, using Netscape embed and Internet explorer object tags to point to the java plugin,
your own self sign applet certificate should work
    Cheers
    Abraham Khalil

I follow Signed Applet in Plugin, and it's working on

How to make this applet working at another computer

    thanks in advance,
AnomYou must install the certificate on that computers plugin. Can this be done from the web? can anyone suggest a batch file or otherwise that could do this for end users?
I want a way for end users to accept my cert as Root or at least trust my cert so I dont have to buy one. I am not worried about my users refusing to accept my cert. just how do I make it easy for them? IE you can just click the cert from a link, but that installs for IE, and not the plugin where it needs to be.
