FireFox 3.6.8 & ThunderBird 3.1.2 check for updates never connects, nor does plug-in update or get plug-ins

FireFox 3.6.8 & ThunderBird 3.1.2 check for updates never connects, nor does plug-in update or get plug-ins
I am doing several re-installs.
I installed FireFox 3.6.8 and ThunderBird 3.1.2 on a fresh install of Windows XP Home SP3 x32.
All Windows updates and IE8, etc were done first after the WinXP install.
IE8 works fine.
Firefox can connect to the internet to view webpages, but NOT do a check for a newer version.
(by going, on the main menu at the top, to Help --> Check for updates...)
Neither can Tbird.
See screenshots below.
Neither Tbird nor Firefox will complete the add-ons check nor updates nor 'Browse All Add-ons' feature.
(by going, on the main menu at the top, to Tools --> Add-ons --> Get Add-ons {upper left} or Find Updates {lower right for any of the selections})
Another computer, same 'build' (different hardware, but WinXP SP3, etc) using a connection from the same router going out to the internet works fine, so it is not an overall connection problem outside of the individually affected computer.
There is not yet any anti-virus nor firewall, etc installed that could be blocking things, except for Windows built in firewall, and there is no blocking action showing. Disabling it did not solve the issue.
6 hours of searching has not found an answer. Trying some of the search results just to see has not proven to be successful.
Thanks.

dianej,
Try this, go to tools, add-ons, extensions. if you have more than one (the latest) Java consoles, uninstall them. You only need the latest console and it should match the Java Platform in Plugins.
I had a VERY similar problem displaying weatherunderground. It would not display the pages correctly and I would get pages of errors that stated
"window.addEvent is not a function" I spent the last two hours fixing this problem. All I did was remove the 6.0.18, 6.0.19, 6.0.20 Java consoles from my 3.6.8 Firefox. After a FF restart, no more errors.
There should be more information in FF when you update Java. No one tells you that you should go in and delete the older consoles.
Good luck
Mick

Firefox can't open normally without going through the "this is embarrassing" routine; nor does it close down properly; I get the "end program" message and have to say "end now"it also sticks frequently, i.e. screen freezes for a minute or more; should I uninstall and re-install to try and debug?
- I've used Firefox exclusively for around 2 years.
- My outlook express has no problems
- other programs seem unaffected; it seems peculiar to Firefox.
- my main use is surfing the net, primarily entering competitions on line via specialist competition sites.
- every day at some stage(s) I have to switch computer off as Firefox has got very slow/sticky/freezes.
I'm not techy by any means, but I can only thing of un- and re-installing to hopefully start with a clean slate.

Sounds like something is keeping Firefox from closing properly. See this: <br />

• Firefox 3.6.10 died it will not launch after clicking the icon nor does it launch in safe mode, unknown causes W XP.

(Laptop runing W XP SP3.) Firefox 3.6.10 died, I mean totally dead. It does not launch from any of the icons in the desktop or the quick launch bar, nor does it launch in safe mode either. I uninstalled it and tried with 4 older versions of Firefox to no avail. I defragmented the disk, I ran a full antivirus scan, also ran chkdsk but the issue persists. Looked all over the internet and Mozilla KB but found no answer, nothing that worked for me.
Going crazy because I like my Firefox browser and I can´t believe I will have to use another browser which is not as fast and which I am not used to. Please help me find a solution, I like my Firefox Browser.

The quote below is from a previous thread where several people solved your same problem with the stated technique. Maybe it will work for you. Good Luck.
iTunes 7.0.2 FIX ("Have tried all 'fixes' suggested but iTunes STILL not opening").
1. Uninstall iTunes and QuickTime.
2. Do a search in the C:\ drive for "QuickTime". Delete EVERYTHING that pops up.
3. Restart the computer.
4. Install QUICKTIME ONLY
5. THEN install iTunes......and IT WORKS.....Just remember to install QuickTime FIRST.

• Since I upgraded Firefox the gold security lock symbol that shows up for internet banking, etc. has disappeared. How do I get it back. I'm nervous not seeing it there.

the bank site does have "https//:" on it, but no security lock shows in the lower right hand corner. It always was there before.

The Padlock is no longer part of Firefox; it was removed beginning in Firefox 4. The padlock shows that there is a secure connection but does not supply additional information. You could have made a typographical error and still have been connected to a secure connection. The padlock was replaced in Firefox 3 with the Site Identity Button. • How can you set Firefox to, or tell if FF is always checking for certificate revocation?

I am anticipating a number of certificate revocations related to the heartbleed voulnerability, and would like to be able to check whether Firefox is checking for revocation, and tell it to if not.

For this heartbleed issue you can also temporarily disable OCSP Stapling by setting the <b>security.ssl.enable_ocsp_stapling</b> pref to false on the <b>about:config</b> page.<br />
Make sure to check in a few days if you still need this workaround and if necessary reset the pref to true.

• Setup failed - Thunderbird failed to find settings for your email account, what does that mean?

After completing the setup i get the following message:
Thunderbird failed to find settings for your email account. I don't know where to look for a solution to this problems & it's very frustrating since I'd like to start using Thunderbird.

Knowing who is your email provider would be a good starting point.
Your ISP?
One of the big free providers? e.g. googlemail, live mail/outlook.com/hotmail, yahoo, gmx/1and1?
Your webhost?

• I have java. It does not work w/firefox. Need to enable BUT it does not show up in firefox under tools-option-content. I need to "enable" but can't when does not appear. How get java to play with firefox?

Firefox version 3.6.12
Java - I believe 6 update 22 something like that - have verified have most up-to-date available.
I am running on windows xp with upgrade 2. (I can not upgrade to 3 without crashing my system. Not even with hp's "fix" unless they've licked that calf over again.)
Restarting computer has not solved either.

• If firefox starts, the startingpage (whitch is google) shows up for a few seconds, and then go away, and i get a white background with nothing on

Hello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
* Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.
Thank you.

• Running 3.6.13 on MAC OS 10.6.7. Firefox wants to install updates but updater never connects. It's in eternal "connecting to server" mode. Now I get a message that says I don't have permission to make updates on this computer, I'm the only user. Ideas?

Not sure what to do....

If you get an error message that you do not have sufficient permissions or have other problems with updating to update then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop

* Firefox 3.6.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
* Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
* Install the new version that you have downloaded

• Every time firefox starts it opens a second window to check for Plug in updates!

The first time, I updated all but the Adobe Reader. It crashed.
I have turned off adobe, and still, every time I start Firefox the update plugins opens as the second window

That is a bug with blocklisting plugins that has been fixed.<br />
You can correct this issue by forcing the file blocklist.xml to update or wait until Firefox updates the file.<br />
That update will remove the severity="0" flags in the file that cause the problem.

• On startup, Firfox checks for add on changes and then goes to a Firefox page. I have selected to open in a blank page and I have disabled checking for add ons. This does not help. How do I fix this?

As above. I am not an expert and do not know how I can give more info. Please ask what you need to know further. Thanks.

• The icons for html files are blank . . . how do i get them to show the firefox image

on the desktop and in directories, the icons for html files are blank . . .
firefox is my default browser . . .
how do i get the icons to show the firefox image ?? . . .

You can check for issues with the Windows icon cache and try to rebuild the icon cache.
# Open the Task Manager (Shift+Ctrl+ESC)
# In the Process tab, right-click on the Explorer.exe process and select End Process.
# Open the file picker via "File > New Task (Run)" and click the Browse button.
# Type or Paste %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local (%LocalAppData%) in the File name field (AppData is a hidden folder).
# Select the IconCache.db file and use "Delete" in the right-click context menu to delete the file.
# After the IconCache.db file has been deleted, start a new explorer.exe process via "File > New Task" to get the desktop and Taskbar back.
The IconCache.db file is a hidden file, so make sure that you can see hidden files.

• Firefox opens up "you are updated to newest firefox version" page every time i start. Does the same for for updated extensions. Also checks for add-on compatibility everytime i start. Please help me.

Everytime i start Firefox (version 9.0.1 -release version) it checks for compatibility with the add-ons just as if i just installed firefox. It also opens up "you have successfully updated to the latest version" pages for firefox (and extensions. ie flashgot and downloadhelper). My homepage was always blank and firefox was always set to load the pages from the last session. A similar issue was covered in this support but that solution (setting the homepage to default) didnt help me.

Hi meric07,
You should look at this article about that specific issue and the article Preferences not saved. These should give you all the information you need!
If that doesn't work:
# Type about:config in the address bar
# Click I'll be careful, I promise if prompted
# In the Filter input field type startup
# Double click on startup.homepage_override_url
# Delete the text string and click OK
# Close Firefox and reopen the window to verify that it has worked.
Hopefully this helps!

• When I try to send a webpage in Firefox (file-email link), Thunderbird crashes. If I copy & paste same link by hand, it works. Why is this?

When I try to send a web link in Firefox (file-email link), Thunderbird hangs, or I should say the email with the link hangs. The new email shows the link, I add an email address and click send, Thunderbird hangs and never completes the send. I have to copy and paste the link by hand in a new email and then it works. It seems to be an issue regarding how Firefox and Thunderbird are communicating.
My server uses IMAP. I don't have this problem with POP, but I prefer to use IMAP.
Thanks for any help!

• Is there an "insert all links" type of feature or add-on for Firefox that works with Thunderbird?

Hello Firefoxies,
Is there an "insert all links" type of feature or add-on for Firefox that works with Thunderbird or any email app? I want to be able to insert all the links from a Firefox bookmarks folder automatically in to an outgoing email and include the names that I have given to those saved links / bookmarks.
I searched for this add-on on the Firefox and the Thunderbird sites, but I don’t think the one that I found is for what I am thinking of.
What I would like to do is to be able to add all the links in a saved tabs folder, or any bookmarks folder, from Firefox in to the body of an outgoing email preferably in Thunderbird, or any email app... so I could just click and all the links and hopefully all the names that I have given to those links will then appear in the body of an outgoing email automatically, ready for me to then write what I want, plug in an address, and send.
When I did a search of add-ons on the Firefox and Thunderbird sites, I found something called “Open all links 0.3.1” on the Thunderbird site that I think is for the opposite of my description... I think this add-on is to automatically open all the links in an email that is received... which IS NOT what I want to do... I want to place all the links that I have in a Firefox bookmarks folder in to an outgoing email... the URL to the “Open all links 0.3.1” add-on is below for you to look at just in case I am reading this wrong...

Otherwise, I could not find any add-on that fits my description.
