Firefox: check for updates to addons at startup, inform user, but don't download and install, as before new addon-manager - how?

Before the new add-ons manager it was possible to let Firefox check for updates to extensions at startup, and get information about available updates without having them automatically downloaded and installed. It seems that this is not possible any more - either updates are automatically installed without chance to review, or one has to open the add-ons manager to see the result of the update check. How can I get the old behaviour back?

Mac Books have their own repair routines. I would suggest going to the Macbook usage forum and post there. Perhaps someone there can help. I would suggest a DiskRepair.
Cheers!

Everytime I click on a video it says I need to update to the newest version of flash, but my computer doesn't support the updated version. So I feel like I'm in a Catch-22.
Any suggestions?

Jay, you may very well be up a creek without a paddle.

• Firefox checks for updates to add-ons every time it starts?

Every time I click my shortcut to open Firefox, a window pops up. This window scans my installed add-ons and checks for updates. Then, Firefox opens. One of my add-ons, "Zotero Word Integration" tries to install itself every time. If I have an instance of Microsoft Word open, this installation fails, but ultimately, Firefox opens and runs fine. The add-on scan takes approx. 30 seconds, so if I accidentally close FF, it's a big hassle. This first started happening after I updated to FF 8. I downloaded and installed FF7 but the problem persisted. Now, I am back to FF8, but, alas, nothing has changed. None of my other add-ons are having problems except for the ones that aren't compatible with FF8 yet. FYI, I do have Roboform, but it is the current version, both to-go, and everywhere.

See:
* http://kb.mozillazine.org/Preferences_not_saved
Delete the files extensions.* (extensions.sqlite, extensions.ini, extensions.cache, extensions.rdf) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry.
New files will be created when required.
See "Corrupt extension files":
* http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_install_themes_or_extensions
If you see disabled, not compatible, extensions in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the Tools button at the left side of the Search Bar (or click the "Find Updates" button in older Firefox versions) to do a compatibility check or see if there is an update.
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile:
* https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Basic+Troubleshooting#w_8-make-a-new-profile
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)

• I cannot update software on my iPhone. I am missing the Download and Install option. Could someone please help?

Please help. I cannot update the software on my iPhone c.
I go onto software update but the Download and Install options is not there.
I have tried deleting apps to make space so this doesn't appear to be the issue.

iOS 8.1.3 is the latest version. There's nothing to download.

• Firefox.exe has "disappeared" so I can't open it. If I download and install new version will I lose all my bookmarks etc?

I've had a lot of crashes, some just firefox, some the whole computer. In process of migrating to new machine so wasn't overly concerned. But after a restart today, I found I could not get firefox to open at all. After finding the system searching for firefox.com, I checked program files\mozilla firefox and firefox.exe is not there. A search showed it not to be anywhere. Not ready to stop using this machine just yet. Any way to get firefox.exe reloaded without losing all my related stuff??

As long as you do not delete your Firefox personal settings or application data, they should remain after a reinstall.
Don't run the Firefox uninstaller, simply run the installer that you download. This will just install over your previous installation.
Note: To be 100% safe, I would recommend backing up your Firefox application data folder.

• When I close Firefox then try to open it again, it informs me it is already running and continues to do so regardless of how many times I restart the computer.

I bought a new computer. I installed Firefox 7.0 then updated to 8.0. When I was finished with Firefox, I closed it. Later when I attempted to open it I was greeted with the message Firefox is already running. It suggested I restart the computer. I did so and continued to receive the same message. Surely, shutting the computer off should close Firefox. I have to use Internet Explorer to contact you.

• On mozilla's OWN WEBSITE I get the message 'Your Firefox is out of date and may contain a security risk!" but I just download and installed the latest version?

I have the latest version of firefox to date (10/15/2014 v32) and I still get messages while on various websites (Youtube, Google, Gmail) telling me that Your Firefox is out of date and may contain a security risk.
I even get that message on the support pages of mozilla.org??
I've tried the about:config reset the useragent(s) fix but that doesn't work.
I've tried browsing in safe mode and still get the error.
Why is this False/Positive happening?
Thanks

hello your useragent (the information the browser sends to websites to identify its version) - apparently mistakenly - shows this:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:2.0.1) Gecko/20140923 '''Firefox/4.0.0; xs-A30GTmfXR3o;CkHZPf;'''
probably some sort of unwanted software has overwritten it. please refer to this article in order to reset the user-agent settings in firefox:

in case this does not help, please try to reset the whole browser:

• Can I maually check for updates but prevent them from being automatically installed if it turns out one is available?

Can I maually check for updates but prevent them from being automatically installed if it turns out one is available?
Background:
In options I have "check for updates, but let me choose whether to install them" ticked. This works fine, in that I periodically receive a notice of an available update, and it will ask me whether I want to I want to install it.
But there are certain times -- for reasons I won't go into here (unless requested as part of seeking a solution) -- where I want to manually check for new versions, but RETAIN the ability to decide whether or not to install it. But if I click Help/About Firefox/Check for Updates, and it finds an update, it will immediately proceed to install it without asking for permission. While that seems quite inconsistent with my update preferences in Options, it is apparently normal behavior as described in https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/update-firefox-latest-version#w_how-do-i-manually-check-for-updates.
So is there any way I can manually check for new-update availability but then refuse the update if I so choose? Once an unwanted install begins, I'm concerned that if I click cancel I could end up with a partial installation or some "messed up," duplicated or corrupted FF files (e.g., multiple versions appended with (1), (2) etc, similar to what sometimes confusingly happens when I do an XP System Restore).
Thanks.

I think what needs to be made very clear here is that when a user clicks on "check for updates" the software should bloody well CHECK for updates and most certainly SHOULD NOT proceed to download and apply any updates. this is misleading and intrusive.
I just wanted to check if there was an updated version but I DID NOT want to actually update at that moment. the software downloaded data, costing me money and tried to apply the update which could have potentially messed up my settings if I had not checked everything was ok first.
I actually discovered how to prevent the update by searching through windows and manually deleting the files but why should anyone have to go to such lengths?
the software should simply do as it is asked, not do things that have most certainly not been asked.

• Checking for updates tells me that current version 17.0 is the latest when I know there is a new version. How do I update?

When I check for updates in Thunderbird, it tells me the version is 17.0 and that this is the latest version. I checked on the Mozilla website and the latest version to download is 24.5.0. How can I upgrade to the new version without having to download the entire program from scratch? I am running OS X 10.9.3
Thanks

Why the objection to "downloading the whole program from scratch"?
How do you know this isn't what your Updates Manager does anyway?
If there is no update path using a patch from one version to another, then you ''have'' to download the installer for the newer version. In this case there would be no "upgrade" path; it would be a re-install.
It is an ongoing irritation with Thunderbird that occasionally there is a version change which the old version doesn't "see" and so you have to download the new version. Possibly this is deliberate to force a complete reinstallation rather than apply a patch, perhaps because there has been some fundamental change which is beyond the capability of a patch. In the past, some updates have changed the profile structure, and the new version of Thunderbird "knows" how to update the profile too.
But reinstalling "from scratch" is no big deal; your data is stored separately in Thunderbird's [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-tb?esab=a&s=profiles&r=1&as=s profile], which persists from one install to another. Indeed, you can uninstall Thunderbird, install a newer version at some later time, and it'll pick up your old profile and work as if nothing had happened.

• Acrobat 7 - Check for updates ends at 7.1.0

While updting some older copies of Acrobat I noticed that the Check for updates now... feature in Acrobat 7 only shows updates available up to 7.1.0. Three newer udates are available, 7.1.1, 7.1.3 and 7.1.4. Since I see this behavior on multiple machines I assume this is standard behavior for Acrobat 7 Update Manager per Adobe. If that's the case this kinda defeats the purpose of having a check for updates comand in the app if users have to go manually download the updates anyway. Can anyone shed any light on what's up?

Acrobat 8 was introduced at the time of the 7.1.0 Update.
There were no added features were in the updates after.
And most of the updates that followed were bug fixes and security updates.
the very most recent ones were security Updates.
Most "Reputable" Software companies will do Security Fixes on software for many years until they feel that no one is or should be using that product.
Its just recent that Apple has stopped supporting OSX.4.11. (Now I've got to find X.5 to put on the slow computer myself.)
