Firefox file asoociations won't work in GNOME

I want Firefox to use the file associations from my GNOME desktop. I am using GNOME as the DE. As such, I obviously have libgnome installed. I've tried the other various fixes, including installing mozplugger, deleting mimeTypes.rdf, and using a clean profile, but Firefox is still using very wrong file associations. I have no intention of defining these all by hand in the Firefox properties window, I just want to figure out why it's not inheriting associations from the DE correctly. gnome-settings-daemon is running and the rest of the desktop works fine. I am using firefox-nightly, but don't have this issue elsewhere. Folders open in Cervisia, which is unhappy.
All help appreciated, thanks.

Try editing /usr/share/applications/defaults.list (or create it if it doesn't exist) with your default applications. Here is an example
[Default Applications]
application/pdf=evince.desktop;
image/svg+xml=eog.desktop;
image/png=eog.desktop;

• I have spent hours trying to install Adobe Flash on Firefox and it won't work.

I have spent hours trying to install Adobe Flash on Firefox and it won't work.

Seems a common problem.
What OS are you using, Windows 8 64 bit or something? Win 8 has an embedded Flash Player on it, and I have been told here that if this is the case, installing a new version of Flash Player is not necessary, but Fire Fox needs the plug in. They came out with a Flash Player plug in for use with Fire Fox that includes a debugger, but I have not tried it yet. (see below).
I have tried installing Flash Player 11.8.800.994  and 11.7.70.224...... and all crash. I think maybe some anti virus software needs to be disabled to allow installation, or the anti virus thinks its malware. I am also not sure if I need to also install Shockwave Flash for the whole thing to work?
Not sure the following will help and I am about to try it because I am going round in circles, too.

fromg googling it might have something to do with messed up fonts. I can get firefox to work as root though! 0_o.

Just an idea: Have you tried to use Firefox from Mozilla. I mean, download it and give it a try?
I have always done that, from my days in Slack, till this day and have to say that I NEVER have had a problem with Firefox, Java or plugins.
It may be a very biased opinion (since I have never had problems) but I think it may be worth to try.

• Firefox upgraded, shortcuts won't work

I recently upgraded Firefox and now the shortcuts for Facebook won't work. (ie. pressing Enter to post a comment). Also, after posting at Facebook I'm not able to delete the post either. I tried clicking the "remove post" button and it was just loading. Photo upload doesn't work either. Maybe both Facebook and Firefox have problems regarding the new upgrade.

The G5 is a PPC Mac. Chrome and Fx require an Intel (architecture) processor.

• How do I transfer my TV Shows from my iPad to iTunes if File Transfer won't work?

I just got a Macbook 4,1 from ebay which came out in early 2008. Ironically, this machine is way better than my Netbook from 2009. I couldn't store all my videos on my old Netbook because I didn't have enough room and am now trying to transfer all my videos to my new Macbook. Since my Macbook is old enough, all I have on it is Leopard and not Snow Leopard, so I can't just transfer everything the easy way. I tried to transfer videos off my iPad onto my Netbook, which has had almost everything deleted off it, but iTunes won't let me. How can I transfer the files if file>transfer doesn't work because it says I don't have enough room?

How much free space do you have on that Mac ? If you don't have enough space on it then you will either need to delete more of your content off it (an hour's long HD programme can be about 2.5 gig), or if you have an external drive you can could try telling iTunes to use that for its library (Advanced tab in iTunes > Preferences, command-comma).

• Firefox 5.0 won't work with mcafee site advisor-will this be fixed soon?

When I downloaded firefox 5.0 it checks for incompatible add on etc. and it deleted mcafee site advisor which shows which web sites are safe to use. I went back to firefox 4.0 because it works with site advisor. I'd like to use the newest form of firefox, but want mcafee site advisor enabled. Will this be fixed?

It will work again if McAfee does a full update...

• I reinstalled Firefox and it won't work anymore

I reinstalled firefox since Adblock had stopped working. Before that, apart from adblock, everything was fine. Once reinstalled, Firefox opens and all I get is a black screen. I am still able to reduce it or close it bit nothing else comes up. I ve reinstalled it again and exact same problem. I have no idea what happened...

hello MOIM, maybe that's an issue with hardware acceleration - first please try updating your graphics driver, or in case this doesn't solve the issue or there is no new version available at the moment, start firefox into safemode by pressing the shift key while the application is launching & disable hardware acceleration in the firefox menu ≡ > options > advanced > general (that setting will take a restart of the browser to take effect).

• Mouse or keyboard won't work in Gnome

Hello,
Since a system update I made yesterday, there is no way to interact once logged in Gnome 3.4. The Super key won't open the shell, Alt+F2 do nothing, there is no element of the upper panel I can clic on (calendar, system...) - but I can see mouse pointer and it moves. I can however access the ttys by Ctrl+Alt+F1. I don't know if this is relevant, but GDM is launched as a daemon and I can type in GDM.
The update went from Gnome 3.4.1-1 to 3.4.2-1. Last update before was on may 6th. Pacman log follows at the end of this message.
Can someone help me on this ? Thanks by advance !

I don't have that hardware and use Parallels instead of Bootcamp anyway.

• Firefox 4 downloaded, won't work with my Mac, lost 3.6.10 where can I find this version to download

I was running Firefox 3.6.10 and received an update notice to download the latest version. After download and replacement(of new version) in Applications, I tried to open the new file and got a message that this version won't run on my Mac 10.4.11. I want to download Firefox 3.6.10 but cannot find it on the website. Any suggestions???

Here is the system requirements page: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/system-requirements.html.
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older has the latest 3.6.x version, and http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/ is another option.

• Is it possible to Sync to a new computer when Windows Easy File Transfer won't work - followup

This is to answer cor-el who emailed me and gave me links to transfer the bookmark files from the old computer (XP) to the new computer (Win 8).
The problem is that I can't even get to "trouble shooting" in the Firefox menu. There is some file corrupt before I'm even able to get that far.
We found his old bookmark files on the hard drive, but eventually, on the old computer, the correct bookmarks loaded in Firefox only way deep in the bookmark menu so I had to drag them onto the toolbar individually and finally the new computer synced up with the correct bookmarks.
I would love to find the files for the bookmarks but I've looked and only found the old bookmark files (even looked where it said to look in "help"). In any case, please don't send me another link unless it solves my problem; I've worked on computers since 1984 and I know when the computer freezes up (and it does when I go to "help" and then "trouble shooting"—when I click "trouble shooting" is when everything stops.

Hello,
Firefox automatically creates backups of your bookmarks, which can be helpful if your bookmarks are lost or missing. To recover them, follow the instructions below.
#Use <u>one</u> of these methods to open the Bookmarks Library window:
#* Firefox 29 and above: Click the Bookmarks button and select Show All Bookmarks.
#* Previous Firefox versions: Click the Firefox button and click on Bookmarks. (If you don't have a Firefox button, click the Bookmarks button or Bookmarks menu item and select Show All Bookmarks.)
# At the top of the Library window, click on Import and Backup and select Restore.
# Click the date of the bookmark backup you want to recover.
# In the new window that appears, click OK.
# Your bookmarks from the selected date should now be restored.
For more information, see the Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer article. For other solutions, see the Recover lost or missing Bookmarks article.
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

• I have Mac osx 10.5.8 and tried to upgrade firefox , now it won't work at all even my old firefox won't work

I need to be able to go back to my old version of firefox or get this one to work

See:
*http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installing_Firefox#Mac_OS_X
*https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Installing+Firefox+on+Mac
Make sure that Firefox gets installed properly.<br />
Open the Firefox disk image (DMG) file with a double-click if necessary and drag the Firefox program to the application folder on your hard drive.<br />
You shouldn't double-click the Firefox application to run it from the disk image, but drag it out of the DMG folder instead.<br />

• Why file.delete() won't work?

I looked throught the forum and I have seen that my problem isn't the most uncommon one. I'm trying to delete a file using file.delete().But it always return false. I have used the file for reading(and sometimes writing) before but I have closed the stream, I have checked that many time ;).
This has me a little confused. The file ins't write protected either. Is there perhaps anyway to close all streams assosiated with a certain file?

         try {
                boolean success = (new File(currentFile)).delete();
                if (!success) {
                   statusLabel.setText("Error");
                readPatients();
             catch (SecurityException se) {
                System.out.print(se);
             }Should work, shouldn't it?

• Songs of right file type won't work!

It's mostly with the songs I rip from CDs, even after I change them to an MP3 format. Sometimes it happens with songs I download (from Limewire) too.
It's not that they won't go from iTunes to my iPod, they won't even go on iTunes at all. When I tried opening the files in Windows Media Player, it said, "The file you are attempting to play has an extension that does not match the file format". Is this the problem? If it is, what do I do to solve it?

So, it seems as though you tried to change the file format by just changing the filename. If you're able to open them through iTunes, you'd be able to convert them to another type, if you can't, nor put them back to their original format you might have to re-import them all. I'd recommend Importing them through iTunes itself.

• File / Open won't work

Bonjour,
I am a Mac user (10.10.2) and for some reason, since Illustrator 2014 CC got installed on my computer, I am experiencing a very annoying problem. When I work in Illustrator, it seems that after I opened files twice (different files), the File Open option becomes not available and the only way to make it work is to quit and reopen the application or drag a file on the Illustrator icon.
I noticed that I can use File Open as many time as I want until I actually save the file I am working in.
I Uninstalled and Reinstalled Illustrator and I still have the same problem.
Any idea on what is causing this and how to fix it?
Thank you.

I just reset my Preferences and it works but also, my open/place dialogue was set to column view and sort by date. I might want to change it as well.
Merci Messieurs!
