Firefox is becomming a liability

In the past I've really liked firefox, because it was easily adapted. But recently I've noticed that almost every update results in at least one of my addons stopping working. The latest was "control-t" to duplicate a window (unless I copied a URL in which case I got a copy of that window).
I literally can't work without this keyboard shortcut. So I've had no alternative but to go back to version 12. But I've already spent several hours trying to get around this. And, it's not the first time. I've already turned off automatic updates, I'm now stuck with version 12 with no idea if there is a security issue.
There are a number of solutions to this and I want serious consideration because I've been reading a lot of adverse comments about firefox updates on a load of different plugins.
1. Less updates, less feature changes. I know you guys love to meddle, but we users can't afford to suddenly find our browsers stop working in the middle of an important job. NO UPDATE IS BETTER THAN THE CURRENT SITUATION!
2. The option to update only when all plugins are compatible. Or perhaps better, the option to select critical plugins which have to be compatible.
3. A stable version. I can't think of a useful update in ages. As I said, I've stopped auto-updates. I would not mind at all just stopping with the current version and only having security updates. At least I would know my plugins would keep working (AND IS IT FAIR ON THOSE PRODUCING PLUGINS TO KEEP BUGGERING UP THEIR WORK LIKE THIS?)
4. A common complaint seems to be the way shortcuts keep changing. Surely you must realise that add-ons use short-cuts and should find a way to at least know which addons are affected. Come one, all you need is a list of shortcuts used by addons! One way around the TabNewURL problem would be to have a configurable set of shortcuts. I installed "Customizable shortcuts", but this does not have any action for "duplicate tab". Firefox can do this (control drag a tab), it is all the more annoying because it is so close, but yet so far.
5. The other option is to disable addons. I know this sounds radical, but I wouldn't miss what I never had. If I had never had the superb ability just to press control-t and duplicate the current window and make browsing such a pleasure ... I wouldn't miss the prospect of loosing something I never had.
AND TO BE HONEST, THE MORE ADD-ONS I INSTALL TRYING TO FIX THIS PROBLEM, THE MORE I KNOW I WILL HAVE PROBLEMS IN THE FUTURE BECAUSE OF THE ABYSMAL RECORD OF REPEATED UPGRADES WHICH DESTROY IMPORTANT FUNCTIONALITY WITH NO WARNING.

That is a far more sensible reply than I was expecting.
Yes, with a family of 5 very different computers it might be easier.
But the real point is that there appears to be an attitude problem that sees add-ons that the developers themselves aren't using as not so much unimportant as unnecessary.
How would you like it if, I suddenly took away the "T" key on your keyboard? There's a workaround (using the special characters facility). Therefore it is not a problem.
Unless you happen to be someone who uses that key all the time. And these constant changes to short-cuts seem to happen repeatedly to many add-ons. I read one post from someone with a welsh keyboard who said they repeatedly found they could not use "control-c" because it the welsh equivalent closed the keyboard.
First you need to have some kind of register of key-board shortcuts.
Then you need to have an architectural that allows action to be separated from keyboard so that keypresses can be simply reassigned to new actions.
Finally, you have to have some way to allow the user and/or add-on developer to gain control of which keyboard shortcuts to what.
And, you know what the reason I'm writing this is because I'm trying to remember what I was doing when I made the stupid mistake of upgrading firefox.

Firefox has become internet explorer or google chrome, with their icon and everything on my windows XP computer. I cannot uninstall or redownload Firefox without it saying "Firefox must be closed to proceed with the uninstall/install. Please close Firefox to continue." It says that when I dont even have Firefox open, and I closed everything with task manager. How can I get Firefox back? It's the only brower I ever use.

Please try a reboot of your pc and if that doesn't work, try the following:
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

  • Firefox has become slow and bloated.

Since using the add-ons my once elegantly swift Firefox has become nonreactive and the height of the toolbars, bookmarks and the rest takes up too much space over the screen.

It's neither, it's using the "add a keyword for this search" button that appears in the context menu of most in-page search fields. This creates a bookmark with the place in the GET request where the query should be replaced with %s.
I've imported both of those files into my new profile, and the bookmarks do indeed get imported, but the keywords do not, so I can't use them to search.

  • Firefox has become extremely slow in the recent times

Firefox suddenly has become very slow. It takes too much time to load all websites and even the typed words and scrolling has a great delay in appearing. It becomes unresponsive very often. I tried reinstalling it and even reset it. Its becoming a pain to use this to surf the net. Please do help!!

I also have found that Firefox has become a dog. I've followed one thread that disabled the plugin-container with no help. 20.0.1 can hang for over a minute and actually hog my entire CPU so I can't even start Chrome! I like my FF plug-ins, but the performance problems of FF 20 are becoming intolerable and no one seems to know what the heck! Chrome does not present the problems and I have been visiting and working at the same websites. If many folks are encountering this mess, I suspect that FF is done for. I have actually found that the Android FF is also tending to slow down my smartphone - stall it! I am a few days away from just removing FF from my computing life.

Did everything you said and when given the option to start Firefox up after install and I declined hoping to be able to copy everything before things got on wonky but sadly they downloaded badly. When I attempted to open Firefox XULRunner Error popped it's ugly head up once again 15.0 is not compatible despite downloaded version 15.0.1 Personally I think Firefox has become so horrible the last 3 patches I may stop trying to use it. IE 9 is slower, has worse navigation but doesn't require restarting my computer every time I download Firefox and use it One Time before it becomes unuseable. This is BullS_ _t.

  • Now that I was sent by Microsoft to your download update site to get the latest version 4.0.1, Firefox crashes (becomes non-responsive) before opening any site page I try. When will you fix this problem?

For two weeks I have tried to use your automatic download of the latest version 4.0.1. It would sit there telling me it is trying to connect to the download computer for hours, several times overnight. Then, it became non-responsive and error messages were sent to Microsoft who directed me to your download site. After downloading your latest version several times, the new page would open. After selecting a bookmarked site, it would open (sometimes only partially) but when I tried to scroll down, it would freeze up and become non-responsive, again prompting error messages to Microsoft. They must be getting a kick out of this. I'm running a Gateway 7200S desktop with Microsoft XP and Intel single range Pentium 4 processor. I have been using your Mozilla Firefox as my default browser for several years with much satisfaction. Unfortunately, whatever upgrades were made have rendered it useless for me.

I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6.

  • Having more than four tabs open causes Firefox to become non-responsive, lagging for sometimes up to 5 minutes and can't close it without task manager.

If I try to open a fifth tab, or try to pin a tab Firefox mutes, or whites out and the mouse freezes. When this happens the title bar states that it is, "unresponsive." I either have to wait until it starts moving again to restart it because I have no close button, and this takes up to 5 minutes and sometimes even more, or I have to crash it using the task manager (ctrl + alt + del) when it takes longer. Also, any time I try to pin a tab it does the same thing with a single pinned tab. If I try to open firefox after a crash, it immediately becomes unresponsive for an even longer time.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

I use Firefox Version 3.6.6. I do not use McAfee software and I am having this issue. I can right-click on the "back-or-forward" buttons and get a history list to choose from (which is far from an improvement), but do not get any response from a left-click. The "back-or-forward" navigation buttons are greyed-out. Also, when I open Firefox (4), I get two title bars at the top with two separate sets of the "minimize", "maximize" and "close" icons. It appears as if one window is open within another, but if I click any of the commands "both" windows respond. It's annoying and cumbersome.

  • I've recently had problem with a popular internet radio site. Once the player opens and the music plays, all Firefox windows become frozen with no possibility of recovery.

When I load up the internet radio channel on http://www.cheriefm.fr, a new window opens with the player, the music starts playing, but all browser windows become frozen. When I force the closier of the player window, Firefox crashes. I thought Firefox 3.6.9 would solve this problem which has only been occuring recently. This used to work fine with previous versions of Firefox.

    Hi, babalku
Have you made sure that all the other drivers for your system are up to date? Unfortunately, there is not an update available for every device, but those that are available should be downloaded first to maximize compatbility with all devices. All drivers available for your system can be found here. The results can also be filtered by device and operating system using the dropdown menus at the top of the page.
Best of luck, and let me know how it goes

Only firefox works very slow... otherwise Internet Explorer and Zgoogle Chrome works fine. Earlier it was a reverse case... We used firefox due to some good features of easyness in usage...
