Firefox has always opened with an extra tab that says "server not found." How can I fix this?

Several years ago, I downloaded Firefox for the first time on my Xp machine. The browser opens to the home page, but up in the tab area, there is always, and I mean through EVERY version and upgrade since that first one, including the most recent version 4, there is a second tab just to the right of the home page tab that says, "server not found." Now, since the home page loaded, it is obvious to me that the server WAS indeed "found." what I don't understand is why this second tab is there. Any ideas? I have read through the FAQ about not finding the server, and nothing there is relevant to this, as far as I can see.

Why is firefox saying "server not found" ?

I am connected to the internet, Im actually using my work computer for this questions because I can not get on at home. My wireless connection IS CONNECTED and I double click mozilla firefox to web browse and it says " server not found" Im so frustrated about this considering your website is not very helpful in solving this issue at all. FireFox isn't working right on my Mac. Sometimes it won't load at all( says server not found) and sometimes pics and video won't load. If I switch to IE or safari it works fine.

I just got a Mac ( I have always had a pc) and I loaded the most update version of Firefox on it. Many times during the day I will go to a website and it will get a "Server not found" message. I can't refresh the page and fix it, but if I go to IE or Safari the webpage shows up fine. It's not just the webpage cause it is never the same one and it can happen to any site. Also when using Firefox there are many times when I go to a page and not all the pics load or if there is a video on the page the video doesn't load. Again if I then go to IE or safari everything is there and works fine. I have uninstalled and reinstalled FireFox and nothing changed. I cleared my cache, cookie, history and still nothing. I love firefox so this is really frustrating. Any help please.

What do you mean ''shut it down'' ? Did you close Firefox, or that window.

Every time I open Firefox and type in a URL, I get the message "Server not found. Firefox can't find the server at..." All I have to do is hit the "Try again" button and it finds it. However, this is getting tiresome. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

This is an ongoing issue.

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process.

Are you sure that's what the error message says? Can you provide a screenshot of it?
If it says you don't have enough privileges, it's because you are on a guest-style account. Contact your system administrator for support on that, or change into an administrator account to install Firefox.

Cannot connect to my home page,says server not found

my homepage is www.googlemyway.com when i click on my icon i get a message saying cannot connect to the above

It is a problem with the site, the googlemyway site is down. I have no idea if it is just temporary or if the site has closed down permanently.

Firefox (& Safari) redirect both Google searches and web addresses to an undesirable Chinese website (www.5542.com). They have both become very slow and often give a 'Server not found' message when accessing various sites. I believe it could be malware(?) or similar. I've tried to block the unwanted site but it keeps on appearing. I'm running two macs and it's happening on both of them. Thanks for your help Moses but these Malware removal links are for Windows and I'm on Mac OS 10.4.9 on the laptop and 10.5.6 on the main machine.
One of the problems is that I can't do too much Googling for help before I run into the www.5542.com or 'Can't find the server' problems. Any more suggestions or other useful forums I could try?

Im using windows Vista. 3days ago, I launched firefox setup3.6..exe internet connection and mozilla worked fine.
when i restarted my laptop, I just can't connect to the internet- it says SERVER NOT FOUND but I am sure Im connected (my brother's laptop is)
so I uninstalled my NORTON,
i also UNINSTALLED my MOZILLA and reinstalled it.
stil NOT WORKING
checked my firewall... checked mozilla TOOLs- use no proxy

Did you empty your browser cache before typing in your url into your web browser?
Did you type in the url directly rather than clicking on the visit site button?
Have you actually published your site?
Are you using iWeb built in ftp? If you are then perhaps try publishing your site to a local folder from iWeb and using an ftp client such as Cyberduck to upload your site to your server.

FMS Admin Console Won't Load - Server Not Found

Hey,
Randomly on Sunday night the FMS Admin Console which you can access via http://SERVER IP/fms_adminConsole.htm stopped working, as in it would not load.
It times out and Firefox says 'Server Not Found'
It was working fine on Sunday morning and has been doing for a year now, I rebooted the server and that did nothing.
I have no idea why it will not load as the server runs fine and I can still stream and everything.
Any ideas?

From your desktop and on your server try the below. That is if you have installed using the default ports, if you have changed any on install (or afterwards) reflect the changes below.
telnet <IP of your server> 80
telnet <IP of your server> 8143
telnet <IP of your server> 1111
telnet <IP of your server> 1935
If any fail on your server, you have a service/install issue.
If any fail on your server, you have a firewall/IP issue.

Firefox 5 gives "Server not found" for all URLs - fresh install of Fedora 15 x86_64

Under a fresh install of Fedora 15 x86_64 on an Intel box, Firefox 5 (firefox.x86_64 5.0-2.fc15) will not display web pages. Internet connection and DNS resolution function correctly. For instance, I can correctly 'ping fedoraproject.org' but giving Firefox the URL 'http://www.fedoraproject.org' reults in a "Server not found" message. What needs to happen to get the URLs to resolve in Firefox?

No, that was my fault. I updated my release scripts yesterday and the new ones did not create the database signature symlink. I just fixed it about 10 minutes ago.
Change the SigLevel back to Required, otherwise Pacman will not verify the databases. Everything should be working again.
