Firefox sync is rearranging my bookmarks. Those within folders are being moved to mostly one folder, leaving my other folders empty.

With the latest version of Firefox, 29, the sync rearranges my bookmarks. It never did under the old version - old version clunky and a pain, new version doesn't work!
I have tried Aurora, same. I have completely deleted my profile only importing my bookmarks from a backup. As soon as I enable sync, after a while the bookmarks are rearranged.
I keep all my bookmarks on the bookmarks toolbar folder, half a dozen folders containing a few dozen bookmarks. To the right of these I have maybe fifteen of my most used regular sites.
When I enable sync, the folders jump to the right of the links, and all but one of the folders becomes empty of their bookmarks, they all get dumped into one folder?
This is an essential part of sync for me, followed by the extensions, I love FF and don't want to go back to Chrome, where I defected to for a short while. Chrome totally nails the backup process, privacy aside.

Hi beardybuck
Thank you for your question. I understand that the new versions of Firefox appear to be rearranging the order of some bookmarks. If you can reproduce this from an earlier version of the places.sqlite file let's open up a bug with the steps. However there are some tricks to auto sort them [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/auto-sort-bookmarks/ add on for Auto Sorting Bookmarks] as well as a number of other add ons.
This may be useful as well:

  • How Firefox Sync is synchronizing my bookmarks in my four computers?

I'm running Firefox 4 beta 4 on four computers (a desktop, 2 laptops, and a netbook). I knew that when enabled Firefox Sync, I would need to "weed out" duplicate entries in my bookmarks. I enable Sync on each of the four computers (one at a time). Eventually, I sat down at one of my computers and "cleaned up" my bookmarks. I thought that would be the end of it.
Unfortunately, every time I start Firefox on a different computer, there are duplicate bookmarks and bookmarks out of order.
    What am I doing wrong?

What I do in this case is:
Suppose you have 4 computers ok (a notebook, and computers One, Two and Three). Than you travel for a month, using only your notebook. You got your notebook a lot of new bookmarks and passwords. It is too much different from the other 3 computers, then this (I guess) is the cause of firefox-sync (fc) confusion.
When you get home and turn on computer One, hoping sync will do the job, you get a lot of duplicates.
Now, to make it worst, the server also update itself to the duplicated set.
If you don't notice and turn on also computer Two and Three, you have all of them messed up. Your only hope is your local database stored in your notebook. If you lost this also, you must clean it manually.
But if you was clever enogh to stop the bleeding before the notebook (and hopefully before computer Two and Three also, so you just need to correct computer One), all you need to do is:
Step One: The Upload. Correcting the server data!
Using the computer you know is up to date, i.e., the notebook.
1- Turn on your notebook. Wait till the boot and all that little icons are completely loaded, so you have a fast computer to act.
2- Click on the Firefox icon.
3- BEFORE the sync start taking action to mess up also your notebook, go fast to: (Do it all at once, in a single breath! I recommend you practice in some other computer before you try for real)
menu Tools / Sync / Preferences / Manage account / Reset Sync /
-> Replace all other devices with this computer's data / next / Yes!
This will make the data on your notebook to be uploaded to the server, correcting it.
Now Step Two: The Download. Correcting the duplicated computer.
Again you need to be fast, before sync starts to mess up. But now, you will turn on the computer One, the one that has duplicated data.
Do exact the same steps but:
-> Replace all data on this computer with my Sync data
This will download the Sync Server data to your computer, without merging it with the local data. Merging is the problem that creates duplicated data.
Do the Step 2 in all duplicated computers you have. If you are not fast enough and sync merge again, you need to do step one again.
If you are slow in step one, and lose the original data, you need to clean manually.
I hope this helps a lots of people.
I also hope that the developers who read this do one of the two:
1- Tell me I'm doing a lot of work for there is another fast way to solve this problem, or
2- implement another fast way to solve this problem.
    Thanks!

  • How to mass moving iviews from one folder hierachy to another within PCD?

    Hi,SDN fellows.
I found that it is really not user-friendly to move iviews from one folder to another within PCD>
I tried to use Multiple Property Replacement to move some iviews in one folder to different folder hierachy in PCD, but I don't really know how to do so.
Do you mass moving iviews in PCD before? How do you able to do it more efficiently.
    Thanks for help.
    Kent

Kyle, the PCD Inspector seems able to faster my process a lot.
What if I want to mass edit some properties. (I thought Multiple Property Replacement would able to do some, but it couldn't)
Said I need to change the Id of a set of iviews:
    my_iview_a
    my_iview_b
    my_iview_c
    my_iview_d
    to
    iview_a
    iview_b
    iview_c
    iview_d
but the MPR doesn't able to use the asterisk (*) operation.
    Thanks.

  • I sorted 'Unsorted Bookmarks' and now there are 5 or more of each folder and bookmark

After Sorting my 'Unsorted Bookmarks', I now have 5 or more copies of each folder or bookmark.
How do I get rid of the excess copies without having to manually delete each one?

This can be a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • How can I re-arrange the items under "Bookmarks" i.e. put "SAVED PAGES" ON THE TOP INSTEAD OF NEAR THE BOTTOM. I ONLY NEED "BOOKMARK THIS PAGE" AND "SAVED PAGES" WHEN I CLICK ON BOOKMARKS. The rest are unnecessary for the most part..............Jim

Read troubleshooting info below............and Question above

App tabs are special tabs and are always displayed at the left end of the tab bar.
You can place all bookmarks that you want to see on the Bookmarks Toolbar in the Bookmarks Toolbar folder.<br />
You can do that in the side bar or the Bookmarks manager if you can't do it on the Bookmarks Toolbar.<br />
Most Visited is a special (smart) folder that shows websites that you've visited and that aren't necessarily bookmarks, so you can't drag them on the bookmarks toolbar unless you first bookmark them. You can do that by opening them in a tab and clicking the star on the location bar twice and choose the Bookmarks Toolbar as the destination folder.

  • Use Firefox Sync to store bookmarks in the cloud?

Can I setup Firefox Sync even if I only have one device? If so, can I use Firefox Sync to backup my bookmarks to the cloud (instead of using a third-party extension?) I'm guessing that Sync stores bookmarks in the cloud because how else would it be able to merge bookmarks with another device (e.g., a phone)?

Sync does indeed store the data you choose to Sync in the cloud.
Because you need to retain a lengthy unique code in order to recover that data from a different installation of Firefox, many users find it not to be a good method of backup because that Recovery Key was lost in a hard drive crash or reformat. Make sure you store the key in a safe location outside of your computer along with your username and password.
If you end up choosing to use a different cloud backup service such as Crashplan or Carbonite, you can point it to your bookmarkbackups folder so you have a number of files for potential recovery. To get the full path to that hidden folder, the easiest way is to access it from within Firefox.
You can open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using
Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button
Double-click bookmarkbackups. You should see numerous files that are date and time coded. You can click after the folder name in the address bar to select and copy the path. (This is based on Windows 7, but I assume Windows 8.1 is similar from the desktop side.)

  • Bookmarks in FireFox Sync

Currently, I have two computers syncing in firefox. I am only syncing bookmarks. The screen I will be referring to is when I hit ctrl + B to show all my bookmarks.
With Firefox sync, it separates the bookmarks for computer 1 and computer 2 with a line. It shows computer 1's bookmarks on top and then computer 2's bookmarks on bottom. Anytime I bookmark something in computer 1, it shows under where all of computer 2's bookmarks are, when it should bookmark to where all of computer 1's bookmarks are.
This isn't a huge deal. I can just move it, but if I forget to move it, then I'll have trouble finding it, because I expect it to be under where all of computer 1's bookmarks are since that is where I bookmarked it from.

Another similar question regarding this. I can make a new post if needed.
Is there anyway to default the new bookmarks to the top? Currently, I have lots of folders. Any new bookmarks I keep open if I'm currently using them. And then when I don't need quick access to them anymore, I place them in one of the folders.
So the active ones need to be top, otherwise, I continually have to scroll past all the folders to get to the active bookmarks. Thanks.

  • I don't have a problem. I want to understand how I can get the bookmarks imported to Firefox sync now that Xmarks will be discontinued.

I have all my bookmarks sync'd via Xmarks, across computers. Now that Xmarks is being discontinued, I want to have my bookmarks sync'd via Firefox sync. So how do I make sure that once I install Firefox sync, I get all my bookmarks from Xmarks into Firefox sync. I assume I import, but it doesn't say anything about this in the info about Firefox sync. Before I install, I want to know what measures to take with the bookmarks from Xmarks. Thanks for taking the time to answer this, I am sure, simplistic question.

As with Xmarks, Firefox Sync will import the bookmarks on your local computer. The bookmarks on your computer should be up to date and include any changes that are on the Xmarks servers. There is no need for Firefox Sync to import the data from the Xmarks server, it just needs to import the bookmarks on your computer.
For details on using it start with the [[What is Firefox Sync]] article. It has a description of what Firefox Sync does and links to how to use it.

  • Private bookmarks with Firefox Sync (NOT about private browsing)

Naturally enough, I have bookmarks on my home system that I don't want to sync to my work computer.
I can't find anything about Firefox Sync that tells me how to keep SOME bookmarks local to a single machine, i.e. prevent them from being Sync'ed.
How can I mark some bookmarks as "local" or "private" when using Firefox Sync?
If this capability was [ridiculously] omitted, how can I submit a change request?

hello Cornan, there is no such concept as "private bookamarks" in firefox - you can only exempt bookmarks as a whole from being synced (under ''firefox > options > sync'') if you want to keep different sets of bookmarks on different pcs.

  • Firefox Sync does not update automatically when I add a new bookmark.

I use one desktop and one notebook at the same time. Firefox Sync does not update bookmarks between my desktop and notebook when I add a new bookmark from one device or the other. Firefox Sync only updates when I manually sync my data from each device. When I used Google Chrome, the Sync feature updated my bookmarks almost instantly. Is there any way I can make Firefox automatically sync whenever I update my bookmark?

Your imported bookmarks from IE should all be in one folder named "From Internet Explorer". The imported Bookmarks are kept separate for easier identification by the user. You can move them to other folders outside of that folder if you wish; you can also delete any duplicates that you may have placed into Firefox Bookmarks/folders before the import.

i sold my old macbook and now my bookmarks seem to be missing. because the sync seem to have worked, i didnt bother saving the bookmark list file. now i dont know how to retrieve my bookmarks, any ideas?

  • Is it possible to recover deleted bookmarks in Firefox Sync?

I have reinstalled the OS on my computer, wiping the installed OSes together with all instances of Firefox connected to the Firefox Sync.
I installed Firefox on the new OS and set up the Firefox Sync using the Recovery key. However, either because the device name was the same as before (my bad), or it's also possible that I've theoretically possible that I've accidentally selected the option to wipe all data on the server with one in my browser (which is none).
As a result, Firefox Sync reports that my bookmarks now occupy 6.1 KB - i.e. all my bookmarks were deleted.
(Since this is a new OS install, I don't have access to any of the automated bookmark backups.)
Is there a way to go back to an earlier version of server data?

No, there are no backups available - no earlier version of server data.

  • Firefox sync worked fine until I upgraded Firefox to version 5.0.1, then all my bookmarks added since I started use Firefox sync dissapeared

Since I upgraded to Firefox 5.0.1 all bookmarks I added since I started use Firefox Sync dissapeared, only old bookmarks remain. Before upgrade syncing worked fine.

Install the following Add-on until Google releases a new version of their toolbar that is compatible with Firefox 5. Google needs to test their toolbar with Firefox 5 and change one line in their code to make it compatilbe. Most Add-ons that worked with Firefox 4 should still work with Firefox 5, but the developers need to update a line in their Add-on's code to indicate with which versions of Firefox the Add-on is compatible. The following Add-on adds a "Compatibility" button in your Add-ons > Extensions that you may need to click after installing it and restarting Firefox.

  • Firefox Sync loses bookmarks and places them in wrong folders

One version before updating to the version 31.0 of the Firefox, I began using Firefox Sync. I use Firefox mainly on my desktop computer, which has Windows 8 as an operating system. Occasionally I use Windows XP on a laptop, which also has the latest Firefox installed.
If I add bunch of bookmarks while using just the Windows 8 machine, Firefox Sync won't lose any of the bookmarks, but if I use the other computer's Firefox for a few moments and while doing that add bunch of bookmarks, problems arise:
desktop browser either a) lose all of the bookmarks from folders, which I had added last, but folders themselves are still there (they are empty) or b) if the bookmarks don't totally vanish, they are magically moved to a wrong folder (source folders don't get deleted).
This happens while not touching the desktop browser at all. Sometimes bookmarks appear again like they were never really gone, but I'm not sure does this happen every time as in most cases nothing appears after 10 minutes of waiting.
From technical point of view it sounds like there could be either counting or folder-id related error, but who would code something so silly like getting the placement of a folder in a hierarchy by counting? If it is id-related.. well, that would be equally awful. Also, there should be something wrong with the syncing itself, but is it really normal that bookmarks totally vanish for some time, before (maybe) appearing again later?
Or then.. I have an unknown remote user, who manages my bookmarks, while I'm not watching..?

Seems like things tend to get worse seemingly automatically as my desktop browser constantly merges the latest bookmarks resulting to few empty folders and one with the latest bookmarks (e.g. after adding 3 new folders and putting few bookmarks to all of them) . This happens only in the root of a bookmark hierarchy and thus I can add any amount of folders and bookmarks to the existing subfolders without them getting messed up. Bookmarks residing out of any folder seem to stay intact. I haven't tested what happens if I add subfolders to folders I added last.
The messing up of bookmarks happens with a delay, so I can happily add lots of bookmarks for an hour or more without anything suspicious happening. I can even close the browser and reopen it. I'm not sure what the actual delay is. Maybe few hours, maybe more. No involvement of other devices required.
I've tried to reinstall the browser by uninstalling it first which included deleting of the "Firefox" directories from the following directories: "AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\" and "AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox"
That didn't help either. I guess I could try to use another Firefox account for syncing bookmarks, but I don't have very high hopes toward trying such.
Simplest reasons might sometimes be the right ones, so in this case I actually could have a remote user, who does some "evil tweaking" to my bookmarks. Or would somebody claim that after being few years in development the Firefox Sync still can not handle the most basic functionality (keeping bookmarks in folders) -- for some people? I read that there are others, who have had similar problems, but that doesn't rule out the possibility this is something else than just a technical glitch.
