Firefox updated twice without permission. Why? I set "no auto update"!

I am the only account besides admin.
Firefox updates after shutdown even though automatic updates are disabled.
I rely on certain plugins and telling me they are disabled after an update is unacceptable, with no easy way to revert to older version.
Posting this with SeaMonkey which still works.
Google update doesn't show in plugins and has been disabled through windows.

Thanks to both of you.
I am grateful for your efforts and realise that Firefox is volunteer based.
However well intended, forcing someone to accept updates is too much like Microsoft/Big Brother.
I never install xx.0 of anything and offering work arounds for this isn't acceptable.
I don't want to give up on Firefox as many folks I know have.
Please just make it comply with "Check for updates, but let me choose whether to install them".
That's clear enough, and I'd still be notified.
Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease.

  • Why does firefox update itself although the update setting is deactivated ?

I've seen that firefox updates itself although it is deactivated via settins dialog. This happens since i have installed firefox in June 2014 beginning with version 30.x. Now I've firefox 32.0.2.
I'll do updates only when i give the command update manually !
Therefore i ask the question and hope somebody can give an answer an describe this behaviour.

  • Firefox 30 installed itself WITHOUT permission and I am SEETHING.

I'm on XP. I have Firefox set to let me know when there are updates, but to let me manually choose to install them. I had Firefox 28. It kept bugging me multiple times a day, usually when I was in the middle of something, to first install 29 and then 30.
    I NEVER let it.
I came back from a break, pressed the space bar, and a Firefox pop-up was on the screen saying it was downloading an update. I pulled the wire cable connecting to the internet out, severing any connection, but it was too late. Firefox said it was installing update.
When I install updates from Firefox I use portable apps so I know it doesn't insert itself into other directories. This keeps my machine clean. I did not ask for or want an auto update.
    What Happened?
Is this a new Mozilla policy, to badger users many times a day and then install even if they say, "No"?
Is there a virus in some new Firefox programs?
I run multiple antivirus scans, and don't think I have anything bad on my machine.

Thank you, Tyler. Yes, there is an important reason(s) I don't always upgrade.
Stability. The value of my time. Privacy.
With respect, every software maker thinks his or her company is the most important software on my computer (and rightly so... to an extent). I'd say 90% or more of the updates have no effect on the way I use my machine, but say, a 10%* probability of causing a conflict with other things on it that will require hours, sometimes days of my time to resolve, which your company is not going to pay me for. Very little or no accurate or complete information is provided as to what a given update will do.
*10% chance of problem means each update has a 90% chance of updating with no problem. Then after just 5 program updates (I'm talking about any combination of programs on my machine, not just Firefox) my reliablity is, what .9x.9x.9x.9x.9 = .59? You can see how stability drops rapidly for the user who regularly updates all of his or her programs all the time. And that doesn't count potentially unique plug-ins.
In this instance I just finished re-building my computer after hardware faults were causing it to randomly shut-down. This took hours of time over several days trying to troubleshoot. Took everything apart, checked, cleaned, reseated things and rebooted.
Then once I finally get it stable, Firefox after nagging and nagging and nagging and nagging and nagging and nagging (get it- nagging?) for 29 goes and upgrades itself to 30 without me being able to take a snapshot of my registries or doing the protective back-up steps I normally take before bracing myself and going through a round of multiple software upgrades as a part of regular maintenance.
I tend to respect Mozilla, but it is turning into a nagging shrew of a program. If it continues to take time away from my work, which by the way is not for Mozilla, volunteer or otherwise, I'll have to research and find something that works better for me.
I am particularly fearful and suspicious of any program that takes liberties with my system without my permission, as Firefox apparently just did. I am less likely to let a program like that on my machine at all.
As for the actual upgrade, there's nothing I can really do about it now, is there? I didn't object in theory, but you didn't give me the choice.
Please leave this post visible in case someone else experiences the same issue of Firefox upgrading itself without apparent permission.
    Thank you.
PS, Assuming it is complete and accurate, It is good to know that Firefox installs in only one location (eg. no floating dlls, history files, etc) similar to using portable apps.

  • HT1918 Hi, I have registered at apple site, and i have submitted the credit card information, they deducted some ammount without my permission, why they did that? how can i remove my credit card details from that site or deactivate my account?

Hi, I have registered at apple site, and i have submitted the credit card information, they deducted some ammount without my permission, why they did that? how can i remove my credit card details from that site or deactivate my account?

    From that HT3702 page :
If you update your billing information, the iTunes Store or Mac App Store will place an authorization hold on your payment card account, usually in the amount of 1 USD or the local currency equivalent, to verify your account information.
You might see authorization requests on your online statement. These requests aren't actual charges; they are tests to confirm that your payment card account is active and has available funds to accommodate transactions. Authorization holds are removed by your financial institution shortly after your purchase clears. The time it takes to remove authorization requests varies by financial institution.
The number of days that it takes to diappear varies by bank, but it's usually a few days - though with the weekend coming up it might take an extra day or two

  • At launch Firefox updater keeps asking permission to update, how do I permanently stop that?

In the past when I've updated Firefox it has made my add-ons stop working, however I've never had any virus problem as I have other programs to handle that. So for me, updating Firefox is more of an inconvenience than a benefit (not to mention changes in layout that I'm used to and stuff like that). I do not want to update, and I've gone into the settings and turned the Update settings to never. Yet, every time I open Firefox I get a popup first from Windows telling me that Firefox updater wants permission to update Firefox. It's annoying, to the point that I'm going to switch over to Chrome if there's no way to solve this, but I'd prefer not to as I've always liked Firefox.
How do I tell Firefox Updater once and for all that I do not want to update and do not want to be asked about it ever again?

Just for the record, the two security updates released in the past few days were due to vulnerabilities exposed at "Pwn2Own", an annual hacking event.
I actually don't understand why you are getting those prompts from Windows. It sounds as though the update was already downloaded and staged before you started Firefox up again. I vaguely recall reading some threads a year or two back about clearing out a downloaded update but the details elude me.
Unrelated: Your More System Details shows you have a an optional user.js settings file. If you did not create this file yourself, it may contain settings added by other software that override your previous session preferences at startup. You may want to investigate. This article describes how to hunt that file down: [[How to fix preferences that won't save]].

  • OSX reboots without permission on update install

    OS X 10.9.1 (13B42)
Is there a setting in Mavericks to tell it not to install updates and reboot without permission?
For many years, one of the reasons I liked Macs was that my Windows PC would often reboot overnight because Microsoft would decide it was a good idea to put out an update, losing me data in the process. That never happened with my Mac.
Now my Mac does the same thing. Last night there was an update to parts of the system I simply don't use (mostly Mail) and apps were forcibly shut down. My specific beef is that Chrome incongnito tabs can't be restored once closed, and I had a dozen or so open doing various things.
To cap it all, my Windows PC now asks for permission and gets rebooted once every couple of months.
Is there a setting in Mavericks to tell it not to do this? (Naturally, I Googled it, but nada...)

I managed to boot into safe mode (by holding shift), but what should I do now?

  • Ios updates download without permission?  AGAIN?

Is anyone else having an issue where iOS updates are downloading automatically without permission?  I've checked my settings and ALL of the Automatic Download options on my iOS devices are set to OFF.  But 8.3 has downloaded automatically without asking on several.   I know that it's easy to delete the download without installing it, but doesn't this just defeat the point?  I thought we were past this after the undeletable iOS7 forced-download debacle.

iOS downloaded (occupying space in the device) automatically and ready to install...

Also - my battery has been telling me "service battery" for a LONG time and then it switched to "replace soon" som time ago. Can't really see what this has to do with anything but whatever.
That could conceivably explain all the problems you're describing. Replacing a Mac's battery should not be postponed since a failed battery will cause other problems to occur. It is also possible that its hard disk has failed, which means the information on it may soon become unrecoverable.
... my latest TM back up was from April 2014, can I just run this when I have rescued everthing and then it might not be as slow?
If that Time Machine backup remains intact, it may be the only viable means of recovering that Mac's information. I suggest you do not attempt to restore its contents to your ailing Mac.
Given that you are having trouble creating a newer Time Machine backup you should stop using that Mac immediately and have it serviced as soon as you are able. Do not take it to anyone other than Apple or a service facility authorized by Apple, for the very reasons you explained. If there are no Apple Stores in your vicinity search for an Authorized Apple Service Provider using the Contact Us link below. Use one of the options that appear under Contact Apple Support. The language on that page will be different for your location.

Hi everyone, I have Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I have been very very frustrated by this problem. [I could not create new windows, and anything that opens new windows, such as trying to see what Add-ons you have etc would not work]. I read about changing screen alignment to the top... I have one screen so the option does not exist. The above messages would not fix this problem. I searched hard and did find a solution in the end. I read stuff about removing Add-ons until the problem is fixed, but its simply not the case.
First of all open Firefox. next go to options: Help --- 'Restart with Add-ons disabled'. Tick the box for add-ons, restart firefox. Next go to Tools --- Add-ons. Next (In the Add-ons Manager' click on 'Plugins' on the left hand side pane. Look for the small blue writing that says 'Check to see if your plugins are up to date'.
Now notice it should say 'Missing Flash'. "For your safety, Firefox has disabled your outdated version of Flash. Please upgrade to the latest version". I followed this, reinstalled Flash and it now works as it always did, no problems. For people where the above fix didn't work, try this one out. Hope it helps people!

  • Why does a standalone program created in Labview 8.5 try connecting to the internet when the program only reads data through the serial port? Firewalls object to progams that contact the internet without permission.

why does a standalone program created in Labview 8.5 try connecting to the internet when the program only reads data through the serial port? Firewalls object to progams that contact the internet without permission.
The created program is not performing a command I have written when it tries to connect to the internet, it must be Labview that is doing it. How do I stop this from happening?
Any help would be very appreciated.

    It looks that way..
"When LabVIEW starts it contacts the service
locator to removes all services for itself. This request is triggering
the firewall. This is done in case there were services that were not
unregistered the last time LabVIEW executed- for example from VIs that
    didn't clean up after themselves"
This is not yet fixed in LV2009.

  • After firefox updated last time, adobe updated as well, now whenever certain sites load, I get the a program needs you permission to continue which is Adobe DLM. What's up with this and how do I get it to stop?

The problem started when firefox updated on startup. This screen is what vista puts up whenever you are about to load something new. I have already installed the adobe update twice and yet this continues.

The Adobe DLM is not required for Adobe products to work. You can uninstall it by opening the Windows Control Panel and selecting Add or Remove Programs. In the list of programs select Adobe DLM (may be listed as Adobe Download Manager) and click on remove.

  • The latest automatic update was accompanied by "You should update Adobe Flash Player right now". Having done this a few days ago a new Firefox update arrived with the same "request". Why and what do I need to do to stop this?

The latest automatic update (in March) was accompanied by "You should update Adobe Flash Player right now". Having done this a few days ago a new Firefox update arrived (today 7. March) with the same "request". Why does this happen and what can I do to stop it? Firefox 3.6.15 and Adobe flash player 10.1.82.76 are currently installed.

Shockwave Flash 10.1 r82 is not the latest version of Flash. '''r152''' is the latest.

  • Why does ff 4.0 beta come up with firefox updated scren everytime I use firefox? Shouldn't it bring up the homepage?

Everytime I open ff 4.0 beta. the first tab comes up with the firefox updated web page. the second tab is the home page. I am wondering why ff 4.0 beta has to bring up thr ff updated web page in the first tab everytime I start ff.

Make sure that you do not use that profile with other Firefox versions like 3.6.13

  • How can I set Firefox update preferences via script so I can configure our 200 Macs to disable checking for updates?

Most of our Mac users do not have admin privileges. So when they get alerted about Firefox updates, they don't have the ability to install them. We would like to disable Firefox for checking for updates, then push out updates from our software server as needed. We have about 200 machines to configure. Is there a way to disable checking for updates via script (bash or Applescript)? And if so, is there a guide or web site to explain the process?

Use a mozilla.cfg file in the Firefox program folder to lock prefs or specify default values.
Place a file local-settings.js in the defaults\pref folder where you also find the file channel-prefs.js to specify using mozilla.cfg.
    pref("general.config.filename", "mozilla.cfg");
    pref("general.config.obscure_value", 0); // use this to disable the byte-shift
    See:
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locking_preferences
You can use these functions in mozilla.cfg:
defaultPref(); // set new default value
pref(); // set pref, but allow changes in current session
lockPref(); // lock pref, disallow changes
