Firefox wants to add something to my software, but I would like to know what it is and why I should download it.

I didn't think to make a copy of the message I got, and now it's not coming up. It just showed up on my screen twice when I opened Firefox today (10/28). So, for now at least, I don't have the specifics, but let me make this more general: I'd like to know what I'm getting any time I get a message from Firefox that there is something to add on to the software. I have only recently been using Firefox, and have gotten update messages several times.

By the way, Help > Troubleshooting Information opens a new tab.
Could you check whether you have the 16.0.2 update? You can look at Help > About Firefox for that.
If you get other messages, they could be generated by add-ons or web pages. It's good to be cautious about clicking!
