Firewire drives disconnect on their own

I've tried setting up two different Firewire 800 drives (1 Maxtor MyBook Pro II and two LaCie d2 Quadras). With both the drives aren't recognized right away. I have to reset the bus on the computer first.
Once each was recognized, they would disconnect at from what I can tell are random times, throwing up warnings that disks weren't disconnected properly and that data may have been lost. This happens with minutes of initially connecting to the disk. The disk will reconnect automatically a few minutes later, only to disconnect again in a few minutes.
Both the computer and the LaCie drives have up-to-date firmware. I returned the Maxtor because I thought it was faulty.
Help. Thanks, Bob

I undid the RAID and things were stable for a few weeks. Then, when I tried to set the screen saver to display pictures from one of my Firewire 800 drives (I have 2, daisy chained), the disconnecting / reconnecting started again.
Would appreciate any insights.
Here's an excerpt from the system log showing disconnect, reconnect, disconnect:

  • I'm having problems with thunderbolt adaptor for seagate 3tb external hdd. faults include drive disconnecting on its own etc

im having problems with a new thunderbolt adaptor bought for seagate ext drive 3tb.
It came with some software which i installed but the drive disconnects on its own etc.

There is a whole lot of bad going on there.
There are problems both drive errors and USB errors.  I don't believe it.
I have a hunch the drive is starving for power.
USB devices are supposed to function all the way down to 4.25V.  Not all do.
USB ports are supposed to be able to deliver 4.25V at the end of the cable at 500mA.  Not all do.
USB 2.0 devices are not supposed to draw more than 100mA unless they negotiate for more.  Some violate that.
USB 2.0 devices are never supposed to draw more than 500mA. Some violate that.  Especially disk drives.
My guess is that your drive is drawing excess current and the voltage drop through the port and cable are dropping you below 4.25; or at least below the voltage that your drive goes "Tango Uniform"[1].   Does your drive have the option for external power?  If so try it.  Following up on wtx's comment;  USB 3.0 is capable of delivering more power.   Also, some drives have used a cable that violates just about every aspect of the USB specification:  A "Y" cable that plugs into two host ports to provide more power to the guest.  I despise this solution with every fiber of my electrical engineering existence; never-the-less, you might try one.

  • External Harddrives disconnecting on their own

Ok, so, I've got this very goofy problem where I have 2 seperate external hard drives that disconnect themselves from the usb all on their own. So basically what happens is I'll be working and then get the error pop up to make sure I eject my external device blah blah blah.... Does any one know what is causing this? is it software or is there something royally messed up with my usb ports?
    thanks,
    James

I would first contact  Seagate's tech support for a possible solution. If that doesn't prove successful then I would try a different product or consider building your own.

Get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Carbon Copy Cloner

Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives

All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • Random daisychained Firewire drive disconnects under Snow Leopard

OK... so I thought this was specific to my hard drives. However, we're not starting to see the problem though out the studio.
Plugging a single firewire drive into a machine running Snow Leopard has no issues. However... if you daisy-chain firewire drives then they will randomly disconnect. The connection will last 2-5 minutes tops before it just drops the drives as if someone had unplugged them.
We finally verified this on a total of three machines using various hard drives.... ensuring that we were taking specific drives out of the mix.

Next time you plug in the drive, see if it shows up in
Disk Utility.  Want to see if the OS is recognizing it
and just not mounting it.  If it doesn't show up there,
try the command line version by using the following
    command:
    diskutil list

  • Boot process hangs if external firewire drive disconnected.

I have an external firewire drive connected to my desktop at work. Time machine has been working well until someone disconnected the firewire drive. I didn't notice that it wasn't connected, but what I did notice was that the computer would hang at the grey screen during the boot process. Sometimes, I shut down the machine and then started it again, it would boot normally.
Then I noticed that the firewire drive was disconnected. Once I reconnected it, there were no longer any problems. I haven't seen any posts about this topic but I have heard from other folks at work that they have had the same experience.
So my real question is this: if I set up my MacBook Pro (which I carry back and forth to work on a daily basis) to have Time Machine back up to the Time Capsule at home, will the MacBook Pro be reluctant to boot when I'm not at home and Time Capsule is not available?

Has no problem booting when disconnected from time machine

  • Problems with External Seagate GoFlex Firewire Drive Disconnecting on Sleep Mode

I am Running a 2.8Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo 24" iMac running Mac OS X 10.7.3. I run time machine to backup to an external Seagate 3TB, FreeAgent GoFlex Desk, FireWire Drive. When the Mac goes into sleep mode, the Seagate drive un-mounts. When the Mac wakes up, I get an error that the drive was not properly disconnected and the drive is no longer mounted. The only way I can get the drive to remount, is to remove power from the drive for several seconds and then reconnect it.
I have seen several people talking about this issue in various forums with many various makes and models of FireWire drives, but I see no answers to this issue from Apple. Does anyone have a resolution to this issue, or are we just stuck with this problem? It is terribly frustrating!!!! The lack of response or interest from Apple is even more frustrating!!!

Wish I had an answer, or even a clue about this one. I have a Western Digital MyBook Studio that I've had for a fair number of years now and finally had to resort to just plugging it it as a USB device. Since it's only used for Time Machine backups and storing things I rarely need, it's not a huge burden, but I'd love to hear from anyone with a suggestion as to how to fix this. I recently upgraded from a 17" late 2006 iMac to a Mid 2011 21.5" iMac and would really like to go back to FireWire if it's not going to be a big-ole-pain in the hind end.

  • Firewire drive disconnection warning

I am on a new Mac Pro with three Gtech drives daisy chained. All software is updated and current. The last couple of days I have come back and awakened the Mac to find the frightening alert about drives having been disconnected and possible data loss. I am guessing it has something to do with the sleep function. How can I avoid this automatic disconnection problem, and what causes it? The cables are also new and came with the drives, which I bought at the Apple Store.

Disconnect them before sleeping the computer. I have owned 5 macs and have 3 now and in all those years I haven't "slept" one of them as I don't understand the point of bothering since they boot up in 30 seconds.

  • Firewire drive disconnects

I am having an intermittent problem with my aluminum iMac (Mid 2007/24"/2.8 GHz). I have an external drive that I use for Time Machine backups (Hitachi Deskstar 500 GB Serial ATAII in a Firewire 800 SATA hard drive enclosure (Part # SS-M120). The problem I see is that sometimes when the computer goes to sleep, the drive isn't mounted when the system wakes up. When I hit a key (usually in the morning), the drive will spin while I log in, but it doesn't appear on the desktop, and I get the "Device removal" warning dialog box. This has happened using both FW400 and 800, and on system software from 10.4.11 to 10.5.4, and seems to be happening more often. I tried putting the drive on another iMac for a while, but no problems were seen. Any ideas as to what the problem could be?
    Thanks in advance.

Excellent. This isn't an isolated problem. I'm assuming that there are few people out there that are doing work that stresses the I/O as we are doing, so it's not a well-known issue.
I think I discovered the cause of the problem last night:
My FW400 drive has valuable project data on it, so I left it off. I transfered my current video project to a USB drive to do my Final Cut work from (ugh) USB. First, I went into FC to make sure the project was still fine on the FW800 drive. What I'd forgotten was that the 003 (also FW400) was still powered down. Out of curiousity, I imported a large .MOV and did a render. After 5 minutes, no disconnect. So I waited and came back 30 minutes later.
The render was done, and no disconnects. I inspected things to see what was different and discovered that the 003 was off....meaning ALL FW 400 devices were powered down.
I then did the reverse; I shut down the FW800 drive, and began using Pro Tools and the FW400 drive. Everything worked fine.
Problem: FW400 and FW800 cannot be active simultaneously. Turn off ALL FW400 or all FW800 devices. Is the problem solved?
To me, this is a minor configuration problem. I can live with it. However, Apple needs to recognize and address it.
I've been working in FC for almost 4 hrs now, no problems.

  • External usb hard drives ejecting on their own

I have five different external powered hard drives. Two are Seagate 1tb, one is a segate 750gb I use for time machine and the fourth is a seagate 500, all of which are usb. The fifth is a simpletech 1tb firewire 800 drive. I'm connecting them to a imac G5. Some of the drives will eject when I xfer data to them. The simpletech hasn't ejected and the seagate 750 I use for time machine has only ejected once. the other three eject and will give an error message saying they weren't ejected properly. I went through tech support but they couldn't figure it out either.

Are they connected through a USB hub?
For the ones the disconnected without warning regularly, have you tried the drive with a different USB cable?
Are all of these external drives connect to power through the same power strip (surge suppressor). That many 3.5-inch external drive plus the iMac (and whatever else you have) would likely be too much for one power wall outlet connection. If this is the case, connect the iMac by itself or with only with a few low power devices. Spread your other devices, including those FIVE external drives, between TWO other wall outlets. Also, if a power strip is getting old, replace it with a new one.

  • Disc drives ejecting on their own

    Hello,
I have a 21.5" iMac and I have attached a 4 bay NAS device with two 3TB HDD's. When I power the device on my Mac see's them and then they disappear and I get a message saying they were disconnected incorrectly. They typically show up and disappear several times and then I get nothing. I go into disk utility to try and mount the drive again but this option is greyed out. The drives are formatted as exFAT so I could transfer the files from a PC. Anyone have a clue why these drives will not stay mounted?
    Thanks!

  • External Hard Drive Keeps Disconnecting on its own

Ive been working on a rather large project on Final Cut Pro for some time now and my SeaGate 1tb FreeAgent external hard drive im using keeps disconnecting on me, this makes it impossible to export large files because it will disconnect before they have enough time to finish the export. Some times the hard drive will stay connected for almost an hour, but usually it will disconnect at around 30 minutes.
Ive tried setting the Energy Saver setting so neither my computer or my display will go to sleep, ever. Ive checked the  external harddrive itself with disk utility several times and its always fine. Ive tried different cables, unpluging other unused usb and firewire cables, Ive upgraded my ram, just about everything i can find it the forums, and still no luck. I have other hard drives that i use that work fine.  What solutions are out there? Please help.

  • Connecting DV camera via firewire disconnects external firewire drive

All of a sudden this has started happening.
When i connect my video camera via firewire to my external Lacie harddrive, and turn the camera on, the drive I have it connected to goes off line. A window come up saying 'Device Removal'. When I disconnect the camera, the drive comes back online.
I have 4 drives connected inline and it happens to any one of them, whichever I attach the firewire to.
I trashed FCP permissions, but that didn't help. I'm running FCPHD 4.5.
    Any ideas?
    PowerBook G4 15 Titanium   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Its the canon camera. Firewire and canon cameras apparently don't play in the same sandbox very well. All macs have only one firewire bus. For a macbook pro you can use an express card slot, but the imac's you are kinda stuck. The best course of action is to copy to hard drive and then move it within imovie. I read this in Tom Wolksy's book on FCE. It is weird. I have a Sony HDV and an older imac and i can use one firewire port for importing and go straight to an external firewire drive--no problem. However, in his book on page 56. It states the firewire issue. I know this is an imovie forum, but i can assume its also the same for imovie.

  • By open sharing with a group, do they see their own hard drive when uploading?

I want to make sure if someone in my group and I are online at the same time and that person, who has full access, wants to upload a document, they will see their own hard drive directory and not mine.  Probably a stupid question, but I don't want anyone into my hard drive!  The other people in the group have full access to the URL and full editing, uploading, downloading rights.  Thanks.  Is there someone there who could answer this question  right away?  Thanks very much.  I love the product!!

Thank you.  May I ask if this would work?  (1) I set up my account, give people who work on the same documents my URL (2) They can come to the site at any time and view the documents.  (3) Then what I want is to have a master account where they can come to the URL at any time and they have editing, uploading, etc., privileges.  In a perfect world, I would like to have a master file of documents that a large group of people have access to not only view, but to edit, upload, download, etc., at any time they want.  They would not receive an invitation from me for each individual document.  That might mean many people on the site working on different documents at the same time.  From what I've read, and from what I understand from your reply, these are personal directories, and I think I may be dreaming up a process that doesn't exist!  Do you think this is the case?  And again, thank you very much for taking the time to reply.

Having issues with my MacBook. Even when the internet is disconnected, apps are still closing and opening on their own. I sometimes do not have control over my cursor.....any suggestions?

There are several possible causes for this issue. Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried until it's resolved. Some may not be apply in your case.
    1. Follow the instructions in this support article, and also this one, if applicable. A damaged or defective AC adapter could be the cause, even if it's the right kind.
    2. Open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and delete all pointing devices other than the trackpad, if applicable. Disconnect any USB pointing devices. By a "pointing device," I mean a peripheral that moves the cursor, such as a trackpad, mouse, trackball, or graphics tablet. A plain keyboard is not a pointing device.
    3. Start up in safe mode and test, preferably without launching any third-party applications. If you don't have the problem in safe mode, but it comes back when you restart as usual, stop here and post your results. Do the same if you can't start in safe mode. If there was no difference in safe mode, go on to the next step.
    4. Reset the System Management Controller.
    5. If you're using a Bluetooth trackpad, investigate potential sources of interference, including USB 3 devices.
    6. A swollen battery in a portable computer can impinge on the trackpad from below and cause erratic behavior. If you have trouble clicking the trackpad, this is likely the reason. The battery must be replaced without delay.
    7. Press down all four corners of the trackpad at once and release. If there's any effect, it's likely to be temporary, and the unit needs to be serviced or replaced.
    8. There's a report that a (possibly defective) Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter can cause the built-in trackpad of a MacBook to  behave erratically. If you're using such an adapter, disconnect it and test.
    9. There's also a report of erratic cursor movements caused by an external display that was connected but not turned on.
    10. If none of the above applies, or if you have another reason to think that your computer is being remotely controlled, remove it from the network by turning off Wi-Fi (or your Wi-Fi access point), disconnecting from a Bluetooth network link, and unplugging the Ethernet cable or USB modem, whichever is applicable. If the cursor movements stop at once, you should suspect an intrusion.
    11. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine and/or external trackpad tested.

  • Disconnecting daisychained Firewire drives

I have two MacAlly 100AC firewire drives daisychained. What is the proper way to disconnect one or both of them from my computer?

If you want to disconnect only the last one on the chain, you can Eject it and then disconnect it. And be very careful not to disconnect the first one.
If you want to disconnect the first one or both, you must Eject both before disconnecting.
After doing the software eject, it's a good idea to wait around five seconds before actually unplugging. Some users, including myself, have noticed that OS X sometimes doesn't register the eject right away, and you get the warning message about a device being removed without being dismounted even though you did it. Waiting always avoids this problem.
    Eject methods:
    A. File > Eject or its keyboard shortcut listed on the menu, Command-E.
    B. Click the Eject button next to the drive in the Finder window sidebar.
    C. Use Disk Utility to Unmount or Eject any mounted volume.
    D. Drag the volume to the Trash; this changes the Trash icon to an Eject icon in OS X.
I stopped telling Mac users to "drag to the Trash to eject" as the preferred method. This holdover from OS 9 is one of the most counter-intuitive UI ideas ever to come out of Apple and caused Apple to be the subject of much ridicule. Apple got smart in OS X and added more and better ways to eject. Dragging to the Trash is also the slowest way because you have to aim it there. Command-E or the sidebar Eject button are instantaneous.
