Firewire from camera to MBP 15" cable

How do I connect my video camera (Sony FX1E) using Firewire cable to the MBP firewire port (which I see is Firewire 800). Is there a cable or adaptor for this please?

This one should do the trick

  • Cannot download video from camera to MBP

MBP running 10.7.3 will not download video from camera SD card either in SD slot or SD in camera. Thanks.

iPhoto does not support mts files, you need to convert them to mp4 using Handbreak, and then you can add them to your iPhoto/iMovie gallery.

  • STP won't recognize audio via firewire from camera

    Dear all,
I am trying to record narration using a microphone attached to my Canon XL1S and import the audio live into Sound Track Pro via firewire. This method works fine for Quicktime. Quicktime recognizes the XL1S and records the narration as I am speaking, but STP does not seem to recognize the firewire input and I get no meter levels or any indication that my audio is registering. Any suggestions? I have tried all the preferences and settings I can find. Do I need another interface for STP? Seems strange that I would if Quicktime recognizes it.
    Thanks much.
    Barb.

It cannot be done. STP (and other DAWs) doesn't natively support Firewire devices in that manner.
Instead, try the Quicktime or FCP approach, or even record it to tape, then import it. The better way would be to get a dedicated soundcard and mixer for that. Believe me, you'll appreciate that!

Your profile says you have 10.6, so why bother with the original 10.5 OS?
But to your question, before you erase anything, make a backup of your data for safe keeping and restoration. Having an external hard drive for this purpose is most useful.

  • Digital camera and MBP

I just bought a new Canon Powershot S3 IS digital camera.
I haven't used it yet, just opened the box.
It comes with a CD, "Digital Camera Solutions" that they say
you need to install in order to be able to download pictures from camera to the computer.
My question is this: do I really need this program?
Or can iPhoto take care of downloading my pictures?
I don't really want to install something that I don't need.
    Thanks!

  • Unable to use camera with MBP in cradle?

    Happy New Year,
Posting this for my Dad, who finally saw the light and dove headfirst into the world of Mac: appears he is having trouble getting the camera on his 24" ACD to operate when connected to his cradled MBP. We're trying to use Skype or iChat AV, and though he can see me, I can't see him. Audio works fine, and we confirmed the mic on the ACD is being used when the USB is plugged in.
To isolate the problem, I had him disconnect his MBP USB cable from the display to operate the MBP as a stand alone laptop. We disconnected, he woke up his laptop after he opened it, I called him back, and voila- I was able to see and hear him fine on the MBP (green light is lit). He can also successfully see himself in PhotoBooth using either the laptop alone or with the ACD, so no problem there.
I read through a related post (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10425681&#10425681) and two embedded Apple Support articles on the use of the camera, but before we pull the ol' SMC reset I want to make SURE I haven't overlooked something obvious. I know it shouldn't be this hard!
    Thanks,
    Eric

Thanks- answers to your questions in order:
    -Not a dock, and no other piece of hardware involved- he just sets the laptop beneath the ACD in a small, plastic shelf;
-Good question. While on Skype with him, I was wearing headphones. The sound was quite rich and clear while we were talking with his MBP closed and hooked up to his ACD. Upon disconnect from his MBP I noticed that the sound had changed quite dramatically- more tinny and muffled. Then, when I asked him to reconnect the USB cable to his MBP I discovered quite loudly that the built-in mic is nearby, what with all the sudden noise coming from his fumbling with the cable.
-I confirmed with him that the lid is down on the MBP. He is running Apple Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.
Most interesting to me: when the MBP is hooked up to the ACD the Skype preferences page states that the camera is "unable to be accessed or is in use". Yet he is able to open up Photo Booth and take his own picture from the ACD camera. Hmmmm.

  • Loss of quality on Import from Camera

    Hi
Im importing footage from my camera to FCP, they are mini DV tapes, and Im just coming in through the fire wire using capture. When the footage gets in to FCP it looks a bit grainy and darker. Does the quality of my camera have anything to do with it?

Never ever judge the quality of your footage using the computer monitors. They do not show you what the footage truely looks like. Connect a TV to the system:
    #8 External Monitor Viewing.
    Shane's Stock Answer #8:
A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

I would say that odds are high that you have a bad cable. Maybe that is why they returned it.
I would suggest trying a different firewire cable.
You can find Firewire cables inexpensively at monoprice.com. You need a 4 pin to 9 pin firewire cable.
    Here is a link.

    Other things to check:
Is your camera plugged in to wall power (not to batteries only). Must be hooked to an AC power source to import.

  • Firewire 400 camera doesn't work with 800 port on iMac

I have a firewire 400 camera that i'm using for a project and one firewire 800 slot on my iMac (Late 2009).
When I plug the camera in, nothing responds no matter what I do - tried resetting the PRAM and SMC.
Compare this to my older iMac (Late 2007) which has both firewire 800 and 400 ports. I plug it in and it pops up using the underlying Quicktime controller api on either the 800 or 400 port no problem.
So I figured after trying to install a firewire camera library (libdc1394) which I need for my project which didn't work, that it must be a hardware issue, so I took it to the Apple store. The genius at the store booted the OS (Lion) from a firewire drive via 400 to 800 cable (no external power to the f/w drive was used) and then using the spare 400 slot on the hard drive, he plugged (daisy chaining) in my camera and it loaded!
So this suggested 2 things - my OS is corrupt or my card can't read straight from my device but why a hard drive in between would change this is beyond me.
I came home and installed OS X on to an external USB hard drive and loaded up from it - so this is a fresh version of Lion, there should be no software issues.
Plug the camera in to the I/O board of the iMac but load the OS from the external USB hard drive - nothing happens, the profiler doesn't detect anything at all.
On a side note, I installed XP and Ubuntu Linux and they also can't detect it, which further suggests its the device or I/O board when interfacing directly with this camera. I've tried providing the devices with external power, daisy chaining 2 cameras, using a usb hub....nothing works.
Just for good measure, I tried to boot Lion off the external USB on my older iMac and again, it worked no problem, which to me really narrows it down to the hardware.
Can anyone work out this mystery? Driving me nuts!
I feel like perhaps the port is a bit dodgy and when the genius daisy chained it, it worked better, but no idea why.
Someone said I should get a firewire 400 to usb adaptor - I actually can't find any...do they even exist?

Maybe something in Apple's quick assist will hlp

  • No data received from camera

I am working with a canon XHA1 and as of late I have been getting an error that says no data recieved from camera. I will get around 7 seconds of tape then it errors out. I tried running on both Vegas 11 and HDV split. I have made sure my connections are tight and checked my after market fire wire card. Can anyone please give me hand.?

    Hello BSA,
You mention using an aftermarket firewire card.  Depending on how this is connected, if it's internal or external, may affect the connection.  If your system has an onboard card you should try using this over the aftermarket one.
If you own another computer it would be a a good thing to check to ensure that the firewire out on the camcorder is working as it should.  Another firewire cable should also be used for the purposes of testing the connection.

  • Why can't  I download pictures from camera through a usb hub

    Hi Folks,
I am trying to download pictures to Lightroom 4 in MacBook Pro and it will work fine if the download is directly from the camera to the MacBook via a USB cable from camera to computer.  However, when I use a USB hub from the camera to hub via USB cable (and then hub to computer), the computer (and Lightroom) does not appear to recognize that there is a source for picture downloads.  Anyone experience similar issues and any solutions (other than continue to use a USB cable between camera and computer directly)?  Thanks much in advance for any thoughts.
    Dave
    Fort Collins, CO

Yes, it is self powered.  Belkin F5U307.  Searching beforehand revealed there is compatability between this hub and MBP.  Also, it is a 7 port hub, I have two other hubs (not active simultaneously when downloading pics), that are used to connect to iPhone and iPad, and they work fine for all purposes.  I have also tried all of the other hub ports that are not tied up, and they also do not work when it comes to downloading pics from the camera (Canon 5D Mark 2).
    Thanks for your help,
    Dave

  • Can't upload photos from camera

Have 12 pix to upload from camera (Canon Eos 50 D) to my IMac.   Been doing this for over 5 years with no problem till now.  Battery is good,  even tried the plug in battery just in case.   Cable plugs into camera,  then to my keyboard,  turn camera on but nothing happens.   Even turned off my back up,  just in case.   Camera gives no indication that battery is no good,  since all systems work:  menu, slideshow, etc.
    Thanks.

    Hello mingdurga,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you are unable to import photos from your Canon camera to your Mac because the Mac doesn’t recognize that the camera is connected. There are two different articles that I would suggest reading over in this situation. The first article has information, that you may already be familiar with, explains importing photos from a camera to your Mac.
Using a camera with your Mac - Apple Support
The next article is one that I would suggest reading over for troubleshooting. Please review the Top troubleshooting tips section of this article for assistance.

  • With icloud set up on my 4GS I deleted photos from camera roll. I run an older PPC G5 with Lion which wont run icloud. Can I transfer pics from i stream to camera roll to allow a non-icloud back up to my PPC? Precious photos are close to 30 day cut-off

With i cloud set up on my 4GS I deleted photos from Camera Roll to make space knowing I would have them backed up on icloud via Photo Stream. I now find that my older PPC G5 with Lion which wont run icloud. I have an ipad3 too, which of course does. I want to copy photos from Photo Stream back to Camera Roll on the phone so that I can back up "old school" to iphoto on my ancient mac. The controls seem to suggest that as an option but when I select multiple photos in Photo Stream and select "Save to Camera Roll" the photos do not appear on Camera Roll as expected. I am running close to the 30 day limit and do not want to lose hundreds of precious photos (or have to email them to myself individually). Can the ipad3 help at all? Any ideas good people? Dan

If only it were that easy Winston. I connect with a USB cable, iphoto opens and I can only see the photos in Camera Roll, not Photo Stream. There does not seem to be a way of aceessing other files in the phone from iphoto and, as in my initial message, I can not transfer the photos to Camera Roll on the phone. My iphone and ipad software is up to date, but my iphoto is '08 version 7.1.5 with my mac running 10.5.8 which is the best I can do on the PPC without messing everything up.  I dont have the dough for a new mac or I would have gone for that option...am I stuck?

How to move pics from camera role to photo stream?

before you fiddle with it you may want to back up your photos on your PC. This is how to move them from phone to PC.
How to Transfer photos from HTC memory to PC
    1) From the phone: select: Menu>settings>connect to pc>as disk
    2) Attach phone to pc with usb cable
    3) From pc open: Computer>removable disk F>dcim>100media
Note: you can also pull the mini sd card out of you phone and plug that directly into your computer. just make sure to unmount the disk through your settings options before you remove it from the phone.

  • Cannot copy photos from camera roll to a synch folder

I cannot copy any photo stored in Camera Roll to folder that synch's with my PC.  > "PC Synch Folder"<    I am using iphone 4s and iPad 3.   Happens to both iDevices.
On the iDevice the "PC Synch Folder" is greyed out when trying to do a copy.   In fact, I cannot even delete that folder from either iDevices.
For what it's worth, I can create a new folder on either iDevice and copy from Camera Roll to it.  Fine.  But that folder will not talk to the folder that I want to synch with my PC.  Strange?
The folder "PC Synch Folder" will indeed sych any picture I put in there from the PC side.   However, what is in there, does not show up in Camera Roll.  What I have in Camera roll cannot be transferred into the "PC Synch Folder"   It's like there is a wall between the folders.
Hence the problem is ...  pictures taken on either iDevices cannot be transferred back to my PC!   I don't want this !
This seems most odd.  Have I done something dumb and simple?
    /tom

I use Picasa. You don't have to use iTunes at all. Connect the phone with the USB cable and launch the app of your choice, such as Picasa. Click the "Import" button at the upper left. Your iPhone should appear in the dropdown of choices to import from. You can then import all or some of the photos in the Camera Roll. You should be able to do the same thing with Microsoft Picture Manager or any other photo management program.
The reason that Elements is the only choice is that's the only one that iPhoto on the phone recognizes albums in.
You cannot move photos INTO the Camera Roll from your computer; it's a one-way transfer. But you can sync photos to the Photos app on the iPhone. You either use Elements, or just create a folder on your computer for photos to sync, then create a sub-folder for each album you want on your computer. Copy the photos to each album, then go to the Photos tab in iTunes and select the top-level folder. When you sync each sub-folder will become an album on the iPhone.
However, I consider the photo app on the iPhone rather limited and klunky. Instead I use the app MyPics from the app store. It syncs photos from my Picasa Web albums directly to the phone over the air. I can also create albums in Picasa Web from the phone, and upload images from the Camera Roll directly to Picasa Web.
Another way to get photos (and other files) to and from the phone is Dropbox and similar cloud-based storage solutions.
