Firewire pci card in B&W Expansion slot #1?

I am using my Blue & White G3 as a server, including a role as backup server to an external firewire hard drive which is connected to a firewire PCI card in expansion slot 3.
The first expansion slot on the B&W runs at 66mhz, the other three at 33mhz. Since I run the server headless (access through Remote Desktop), I do not need to have the video card in slot one but could put it in another, slower, slot.
My questions are:
1.) Can I put the firewire PCI card in slot one and
2.) Will I get higher throughput?
Thanks,
Rich
G5 Dual 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

FireWire 400 is theoretically capable of 400 MegaBits/sec. At 8 bits per byte, thats a theoretical maximum throughput of 50 MegaBytes a second.
A 10,000 RPM drive can source a single burst of data off the platters at about 50 MegaBytes a second. Write bursts can be slightly faster, because the data goes in the cache, but you have to write it to the platters eventually.
The 33 MHz slots are talking multiple bytes at once, so there effective speed should be quite a bit higher. I have seen a rumor here that bugs in the firmware limit the 33 MHz slots to a mere 53 MegaBytes/ second.
My assessment is: everything is topping out around 50 MegaBytes a second. Unless you are using a 15,000 RPM drive in the FireWire enclosure, you do not need to do anything extraordinary. Connect it in the usual way and it should do fine. The extra theoretical speed from the 66 MHz slot is unlikely to be seen in daily use.

Nonsense on all accounts. Your local guy is, umm, misinformed.
Bad FW manifests as a binary situation. It either works or it doesn't. While an open connection on the motherboard's FW port section is possible, it is a result of mishandling and is a physical condition that is repeatable and therefore easily found by a competent tech.
Fluctuating FW status indicates software or OS problems that are difficult but certainly not impossible to diagnose. The major FW support sites (use google) can assist you to establish a test procedure that will save you lots of money and wasted time. You carefully eliminate all possible causes and then just as carefully examine what's left. If you do not set up a good test procedure, buying additional PCI FW cards may not fix anything.
Failure to communicate with your deck can be caused by dozens of things and we've been discussing them for years around here. An overloaded FW bus is not on that list unless you've got a bunch of other FW devices hooked to the same bus. That qualifies as User Error.
Buy any PCI FW card that says "Macintosh compatible" on it. That is not a problem because they all say that; PCI is PCI. They range from $10 to $200 at CompUSA, choose your connectors and bus speeds and just take your pick.

  • Recommendations? USB 2.0 & Firewire PCI card for MDD Dual Boot G4 (1.25 Ghz

Can anyone recommend a good USB 2.0 and Firewire combo PCI card? (at least 3 USB 2.0 ports and 2 FW) for my G4 MDD Dual Boot- 1.25 Ghz)?
I have an Orangelink+ Micro USB 2.0/FW PCI card from the days of OS 9- that's supposed to be USB 2.0 under OS X, but isn't (it shows up as max 12/mbps in System Profiler). I'd like to get an external Hard Drive and most of them are USB 2.0 now.
    Another question:
Under system profiler, it shows that I have one USB 2.0 port. I'm assuming it's an internal port, because all of the external ports show transfer rates of 12mbps. Is this a correct assumption?
Thanks in advance for any help!

  • Can anyone recommend a good Firewire PCi card for G5??????

I want to expand my number of Firewire ports on my G5 dual 1.8ghz. Anyone know which is meant to be the best in terms of Compatibility, quality and price. I would like a couple of 800 and 1 more 400 preferably.

I would agree with that, go SATA if you're an island. That's what the majority of my system is set up with.
However, I also have a DSR-11 connected via firewire, and I get firewire drives shipped to me by clients, so I need an additional firewire bus. I bought the cheapest fw400 card I could find, and haven't had any issues yet. I think I spent $35 at CompUSA.
Are there issues that would make me want to buy a better card?

  • Dead firewire Ports & PCI Card

Well here i go. Today I hooked up my firewire external drives. I am in the process of cleaning and reorganizing. The drives did not mount. The deck was next to be hooked up and is not recognized?
Okay so next its the forums alot of info. too much for me. Zapped the pram rebooted numerous times. Shut down let everything rest unplugged everything rebooted and plugged everthing in, nooo go. One of the LaCie fwdrives does work in my Mac Book Pro, so I realize it is not the drive or the cable. Reset the pmu button. NADA.
Okay so now its off to Staples for that Belkin PCI Firewire card. Installed it nothing. The system profiler recognizes it but the drives don't mount, and Disk Utility does not see the drives. Called Belkin tech support and I don't even want to go there, no we diffently do not want to talk about that.. anyone had a similar problem I would greatly like to hear what you have to say. It is real obvious that I would like to have the ports....BOTH FW PORTS THAT SHIPPED WITH THE APPLE G 5 work, however I quess that will not be and it seems everyone just settles for the PCI workaround, I will also if I can get it to work.. Thanks. I'll need the practice for when my USB ports LUNCH...

Regarding having to disconnect every FW connection before hooking up a Canon (GL2 in my case) I'd figured it was my Echo AudioFire 2 FW audio box that was causing the strin on the system, but as you quite rightly pointed out it's the Canon.
I just got back from buying a no brand "IEEE 1394A Card" from a local PC centric store and hooked the AudioFire up to it thinking it would end the problem, but as soon as I connected the GL2 the connection to my 1TB external LaCie was severed and my Lexar Professional card reader started flashing on and off (maybe it was flashing in sympathy with the pulses coming from the GL2 - a communication signal of some kind).
Anyways, I now have the following connections which is working great:
    1. Firewire PCI card hooked up to the GL2 exclusively
    2. Built-in G5 Firewire (rear FW400 port) hooked up to the FW breakout cable on my Cinema Display.
2a. (Cinema Display FW400 port 1) to Ext 1TB Lacie
2b. (Cinema Display FW400 port 2) to Lexar Professional card readers' FW port 1 and then from port 2 to the Echo AudoFire 2.
The only downside to this is that I was hoping to start using an iMac as my main machine but I can't now because I need two FW busses, and when I upgrade to a new Mac Pro I'll have to use up a PCI slot for the FW card.
I'm surprised Apple's pro machines only have the 1 FW bus, and even stranger how FW400 and FW800 share the same bus!!!

  • PCI card

I have a PCI card in my old G4 power mac. When I tried to fit it in my newer mac, which is a powermac g5 - the card doesn't appear to fit. It's a PCI card, but the little notch is in the slot to put it in. Is there any cure? This is a Delta 66 - enabling me to hook up my tape player to my computer and recording voice with music. Is there any help out there? Thanks

    HI-
Your machine is a dual 2.5GHz PCI-X model:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermacg5/stats/powermac_g5_2.5dp.html
The expansion slots accept PCI or PCI-X cards with either 32-bit or 64-bit address and data buses.
The expansion slots support universal and +3.3 V cards, but not 5 V signalling. The cards are required to use the standard PCI fence described in the specification.
Note: 5 V keyed or signalling cards do not work in the Power Mac G5 computer.
The computer’s case has four openings in the back for access to I/O connectors on cards in the three expansion slots and the AGP slot. Each slot has room for a full size 12.335-inch or short 6.926-inch card. The numbering on the casing is 1 through 4 and corresponds to the label on the PCB. *Number one is the AGP slot* and numbers *two through four are the PCI or PCI-X slots*.
    PCI/PCI-X Developers Note
PCI or PCI-X cards cannot be installed in slot #1.
This is reserved for the AGP graphics card only.
M-Audio lists compatibility of the Delta 66 with most G5's, with a couple of exceptions:
    http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=support.faq&ID=b9f145c1c2ef3fd398ae0c17b1a4c b48
There should be no physical reason for the PCI card to not be installable in slots 2, 3, or 4, unless the PCI card is 5V keyed.

  • Shopping for PCI cards

    I'm looking for ::
    USB 2.0
    Firewire 800
    SATA controller
    Gigabit ethernet
I'd love to get combo cards if possible. i.e. USB/firewire and Gigabit/SATA. Really any combination of those 4 would be fantastic.
any recomendations? I'm tired of searching eBay and "screening" every auction to see if the PCI cards are compatable with my slots.
    OWC has a limited selection
anyone know of any *tried and true* devices?

    Mike Lowry wrote:

not a whole lot of firewire 800 products. not to mention cards compatable with my G3 desktop.
    helpfull still.
That may be the difficulty in getting the latest USB2/FW800/Gigabit/SATA cards, since when the PCI hardware was introduced with those newer standards the beige G3 was already a dinosaur, so they were likely designed for official support and compatibility with the current computer models at the time and since.
You might have better luck with compatibility with the older USB1/FW400/ATA card for example. (Not sure why you need Gigabit, if the on-board Ethernet is still functional anyway.) That's not to say the newer cards won't work at all, but you may be the guinea pig who finds out if they do. I'd be interested in your results with the SATA, if you can get that to work or not. I haven't heard of any one using them in the G3 here, if so I must have missed it.
Sonnet had a Tempo Trio card that combined USB/FW/ATA, not sure what the latest version of that is now. They provide a good support section with the latest Mac drivers and firmware updates for their older products, also the ACARD brand has several Mac hard drive controllers. Go for a hardware RAID card if you really want to boost disc read/write performance, all the other interface theoretical speeds are still limited by the hard drive read/write heads. With a striped RAID 0, two heads are better than one, as they can operate simultaneously. Let me know if you can get those 250GB SATA working in a RAID 0, I am thinking about going that route when I run out of space with my 2x120GB ATA66 RAID, if I keep the computer going that long. Although the ATA133 card may work just as well.
Anybody using either of these SATA cards in their Beige G3?

  • PCIe 2.0 Expansion slot / Available lanes for 1.0 card

OK , Heres the question :
In the PCIe 2.0 expansion slot { Slot number 2 } , Can I put an X8 1.0 Raid card in there ? and how many lanes will slot 2 support at 1.0 ?
I know that it is backward compatible , but , it NEVER states how many lanes it will support in that slot.
    Is it like slots 3 & 4 ? and goes down to x4 or even x1 ??
I called Apple today and spoke with 3 different tech guys and no one REALLY knows !!
They sent me some files to read , but none of them specifically states that a x8 1.0 PCIe card will be given an 8 lane throughput in slot 2 !!
So , how about guys ? What's the true and accurate answer here ?

In the PCIe 2.0 expansion slot { Slot number 2 } , Can I put an X8 1.0 Raid card in there ? and how many lanes will slot 2 support at 1.0 ?
The answer is yes. An 8x PCIe 1.0 card will work in slot 2. It will perform the same as if the card was installed in an 8x PCIe 1.0 slot.
This use to apply to all PCIe 1.0 cards. However, when Apple released Mac Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.3 it caused 1x PCIe 1.0 SATA host cards that utilize the Silicon Image 3132 chip to no longer work in slot 2. These cards will still work in slot 3 and 4.
Unfortunately, users cannot retreat to the Mac Pro EFI 1.2 firmware if 1.3 has already been installed.

  • Employee at the Genuis Bar told me to get pci-express firewire 800 card

told me any card would work in my new.......well it WAS new till they announced upgrade, 2x3ghz quadcore xeon.
I want to add another firewire 800 bus since I have the AJAHD hooked to the existing bus.
So I went to Fry's and got the "PCI-express firewire 800/1394b controller card 3 ports".
put it into one of the empty slots, rebooted, and got nothing, just some dull chimes, that don't stop.
it fit within my macpro, but it was a lot shorter than the SATA card, that had no problems.
So I guess I need to know exactly what type of firewire 800 card to I have to get.

I installed 1 of these in an 8 core OS 10.4.11 FCp 6.0.2 QT 7.3.1 dedicated to io HD
don't recall a driver disk for mac, however I rarely if ever use the supplied driver disk for anything anymore 'cause it's almost always out of date. go to mfg site and get drivers etc.
this is the first link I saw googling siig
    http://www.smalldog.com/product/42566/atfgc
by the way it worked great. needs a 1 lane slot. you'll need to check expansion slot utility. typically goes in slot above gfx card or slot4 (top) slot

do they make cards readers for p2 and sxs cards that fit into

    Hi indore,
Yes DV is a good starting point,P2 is great, there are some small issues to get to know about all formats out there these days, use what your comfortable with, or use what your clients will pay for that's a better rule to use.
I posted my results to date at-

More testing to make sure all is good is still under way, may be a few weeks yet, i'm getting some colleagues to test on their Macpro's as well. So far all is good.

I need to fit a Firewire pci-express card or adapter of some sort to my computer...

    hi pshdo,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
Can you take a photo of your mainboard slots.
the reason is, Your system board might be different from this photo i found for H530,
but if it is the same then, here it is
Your system has 1 PCIE x16 most likely for GPU or Graphics card.
Then you have this three small PCIE x1.
check if that firewire adapter supports PCIE x1 then you good to go,
    Hope this helps

  • PCI Express Expansion Slots

I noticed that the Mac Pro offers 3 extra expansions slots for PCI Express graphics cards. How is it possible to SLI three graphics cards with no nForce MCP? Are the other slots even usable and how can you combine four graphics cards with no Crossfire or SLI?

SLI and Crossfire are not supported at this time.
The possibility to run more monitors is there with the extra slots, but not to combine video cards for faster frame rates on a one monitor.
It's not Apple's fault, it's the limited capabilities in the Xeon chipset supposedly, not all slots can be 16x. A pair can be 8x though.
I lost the link where Ars Tech explains it.

  • MSI 890FXA-GD70 - Can you use all 6 PCI Express expansion slots at once?

    Hey all,
I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to use all 6 PCI Express expansion slots on the motherboard (the 5 Full x16 slot and the 1 x1 slot) at the same time?  I know I'd lose the capability for x16 bandwidth but does using any of the slots automatically disable any of the other slots?  I have 6 single wide x1 PCI express cards I want to use at the same time and they do not all seem to be getting recognized by the OS (W7 x64).
    Specs on the machine are:
    890FXA-GD70 Motherboard - BIOS 1.9
    AMD Sempron 145 CPU
    4 GB DDR3 Kingston RAM
WD 160 GB Blue SATA HD
    Win7 x64
    Thanks!

    • 5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 slots
    - PCI_E1 supports up to PCIE x16 speed (when PCI_E3 is empty)
    - PCI_E5 supports up to PCIE x16 speed (when PCI_E6 is empty)
    - If you want to install two graphics cards, please use PCI_E1 & PCI_E5 slots
    - PCI_E3 & PCI_E6 support up to PCIE x8 speed
    - If you want to install four expansion cards into PCI_E1, E3, E5 & E6 slots, these four PCIE x 16 lanes  will auto arrange from x16/ x0/ x16/ x0 to x8/ x8/ x8/ x8
    - PCI_E4 supports up to PCIE x4 speed
All PCI-E slots can be filled at the same time with no problem.
    They will run at x8,x8,x4,x8,x8
The question mark is the small PCI-E x1 slot.
It's not clear if will affect others or will be disabled, or will work fine with x1 speeds as adverted.
What hapends if you fill 5x of those cards into the five of the PCI-E slots, except the small PCI-E x1 slot?
