Hello all
I am thinking about getting the new 60GB iPod video soon. I have a lot of music (1500 CDs, mostly Classical). I noticed in one review that I read that the new iPod no longer supports Firewire but only a USB connection. I have an old G4 iMac (10.3.9) with the standard 1.1 USB connections. Will my old USB ports be OK for this new iPod ? How much faster (transferring data) was the Firewire compared to the USB connection ? I want to make sure that my old G4 iMac (3 yrs.old) can handle this new iPod. I also have the newest version of QuickTime as well. Thanks in advance !

Maybe my indications were wrong, but I had 2.975 , so a little bit less than 3.

Also, if you know that the solution you get from the formula is decimal, and minutes and seconds are always on a scale of 1/60 (I don't know how to explain it, 'cuz I don't know how to tell it in English) you have to transfer 2.975 (which is still less than 3) to the other scale. I used my calculator for this, but you can also do it ofcourse by using your computers own calc program.

You need a network connection and a product such as ScreenRecycler. All such products require a bootable OS on the iMac.

Premiere Pro CS3 Capture Question (Firewire to USB Converter)

Does Premiere Pro CS3 support capture through a Firewire to USB Converter? More specifically, we have one particular PC laptop that does not have a firewire port, only USB 2.0. So we were thinking of getting a firewire to USB converter. Will that work for capturing footage from our Mini DV camera?
Camera is Canon XH-A1S HD and a firewire cable will be running from this camera to the firewire to USB converter, then a USB cable will be running out of the converter into the dual core laptop with Windows 7, 4GB RAM, Nvidia 460M video card.

Might work then again it might not. Have not heared of any positive results. In other words imo its a waste of money.

Firewire to USB adapter?

I recently purchased a iMac 27 i5. Love it. But it has only USB and thunderbolt ports. My beloved Nikon 4000 film scanner only has firewire connectivity. I found a firewire to USB adapter online and purchased one. It came from China. When I plugged it into my self-powered USB hub, I got a message saying a USB device was drawing too much power and it shut down one or more other USB devices to protect the computer. I couldn't print. I realized the adapter might be the problem and when I disconnected it, my printer came back online.
Q1 -- has anybody found a firewire to USB adapter that works?
Q2 -- is there another workaround to connect firewire devices to the new iMacs?
Q3 -- is it possible to have a USB port put into the scanner hardware?

Thanks, Niel. That makes sense ... should have thought of that ... assuming that will reduce the excessive power draw? I see Apple sells the 400-800 cable.

Firewire to USB or Thunderbolt cable

Need to get an adapter to bring video from firewire to USB or thunderbolt. Suggestions?

Apple has announced (on 6/11/12) a Thunderbolt-Firewire adapter for use on the Air, but it is not in the Apple Online Store as of yet. This would seem to be the most practical solution.

Capturing Hi8: How do I do this if my camera has no Firewire or USB port?

So I have a "Sony Handycam Vision" old skool camera that records on Hi8 tape. I want to transfer the footage onto my MacPro, but I realize there is no Firewire or USB port.. What should I do? Is there another way?

Firewire to USB?

I probably already know the answer to this question but i would like to be sure.
I have an external firewire drive that i used in the past to make a bootable clone of my MacBook Pro, using SuperDuper. The MBP developed some serious problems so in early 09, i replaced it with a new MacBook (2.4Ghz). I didn't like the lack of firewire but i was really tired of struggling with the size of the MBP and wanted the cuddly quality and one handed convenience of a 12", like the good ol days of my powerbooks. Who knew Apple was going to come up with a 13" MBP?
So now, i need to have a bootable copy of my MBP. I have one on the firewire drive which i made before i got the MacBook. My question is, is there any way of being able to connect this drive to my MacBook through some kind of adapter or hub so that i can boot from the MBP clone?
Or, is the only way i can have a bootable back up of the MBP that i can use from my MacBook to do a new SuperDuper backup on a USB 2 external drive?
In other words, is my old backup/clone on the firewire drive completely useless as far as accessing it through my MacBook goes? (as i suspect). I searched this forum for the answer but most of what i found was about video transfer/editing. There was something about a hub, but it didn't make sense to me.

BTW, i have a couple of those external drives that are dual, both firewire and USB. So the bootable backup should work with either connection, right? that is, IF i had the back on it which i don't. But maybe there is some way to transfer the copy i have on one firewire connection drive onto the drive that has both? I don't suppose i could just drag the stuff from one drive to another while both are connected to the MBP? Is there any easy way to get the data wiht its bootability from one drive to another? Probably not, i know, but have to ask. thanks

Keep your eyes open for the Thunderbolt hubs and adapters that are starting to come out Some of them have multiple jacks with USB 2, USB 3, Firewire, etc all sharing the Thunderbolt port. Some even have internal disk drives and one has a Blu-ray DVD drive. Some are kind of pricey, but gives you lots of options for connectivity.

FireWire vs USB at hibernate mode

Well I have the following task/issue. I have iMac and installed SamrtSleep 3rd party utility. It put my IMac in hibernate mode once system goes sleep. I have made for UPS setup so when power is off iMac will hibernate.
The problem is I have several external hard drives - FireWire and USB. Anytime I wakeup after hibernate the USB drives is unplugged and plugged again (software mode) and it breaks everything (if any) what was busy with this external drive and Not Properly Ejected warning appear. For example I have image file on external USB mounted before sleep. After wakeup it's unmounted like if I will just switch hard disk off while running.
However my FireWire works just fine the same way like internal hard drive. I have virtual machine image file on FireWire disk. I open and run it. Than go to hibernate and wakeup. The system stays same place where it was before sleep. Noting was unmounted/unplugged. I was able to continue work on Mac OS as well as in same place in virtual machine.
First I was looking for help here and All Over The Google but all issues is around how to unmount all external drives before sleep. But I don't need to unmount them I need hibernate them together with all system.
Also when wakeup my virtual machine notice me where to plug many USB devices (it always ask when new one is connected). It means when Mac OS wakeup from hibernate it "break" all USB connections however nothing happens with FireWire.
My question so far if its possible to put USB in some mode when it will not "break" on wakeup? Or maybe any other solution to hibernate USB disks.

Hard to believe there is such a cable. If there is such a cable, it's a scam. Firewire and USB are totally different, electrically and protocol-wise. Even if there is such a cable, it will not work for connecting your miniDV player to a Mac. miniDV (video) has always been a Firewire-based connection. Sony calls Firewire "i.Link"

Firewire or USB for Home Media Server

I have an iMac (2008) that I am going to use as an iTunes server for streaming to AppleTV. Since the iMac only has a 320GB drive, I am planning on buying a new external hard drive to which I will transfer all of my media, which I will always leave connected to the iMac (I will just point the iMac's library to the media on the drive).
My question is whether I should consider FireWire 800 or USB 2.0 as the external drive. I know most macs these days no longer come with FireWire, and in the case that I end up getting a new computer in the next year or two, I'd rather have a drive that utilizes USB 3.0 and have that faster option in the future.
That being said, if the stream quality to the AppleTV is going to be so poor that I hate it (using the USB 2.0), then I would consider a FireWire 800. Does anybody have any experience with this?
Also, it should be noted that all of my devices will be wired to the local home network (not wireless).

Personally, I don't think it matters. FireWire 800 is capable of almost 800 Mb per second and while USB 2 is theoretically capable of 480 Mb per second it only has an effective throughput of 280 Mb per second. If you have other uses for this drive, the difference between FireWire and USB may well be worth considering, however if you are just going to use it for movies to play to your Mac/Apple TV, you should remember that these movies will need no more than 10 Mb per second in order to play without issue.

FireWire to USB adaptor

Hello again. I posted earlier about problems with connecting a FireWire external HD to my new MBA, which only has USB ports. I searched some but couldn't really find a FireWire to USB adaptor cable although I read that they may have them at best buy.
Has anyone purchased such a cable for Mac and, if so, could you tell me who made it and where you purchased it.

OK, thanks. I did a lot of time researching and found some articles indicating that a couple of cable-making companies made such a thing (i.e., sima and tripp lite). Upon searching their sites and sending emails, neither of them sold such a product. I've read through my search that Apple may be eventually coming up with such a cable but who knows.

Could I just buy a usb cable and hook them up and use the ti book as an external drive or would it be more involved due to having different versions of usb (i.e., 2.0 usb on air and ? on the 7 year old ti book). The external drive I have only has firewire and I can't find a firewire-usb cable anywhere. If I could, then I'd just connect the external hd to my new mac air and do the transfer.

I need to hook up more peripherals, I need more ports for
scanner, printer, wacom tablet, external HD etc...
I don't know what is the difference about firewire or usb...or which one is faster...

Intel Macs can boot from USB or Firewire. PowerPC OS X Macs needed Firewire drives to boot (or a lot of complex fiddling to get USB to boot).

Take a look at The MiniStack v3, it offers a three port USB2.0 hub, and one extra FW400 and FW800 port piece (assuming you connect to the FW800 port on the iMac). It also has a bay for an SATA external hard disk of pretty much any size you could want and I'm told fits nicely on the iMac plinth under the screen.

No, you can't connect an external drive to the iPad - the iPad doesn't have a USB or firewire port and the camera connection kit only supports the transfer of photos and videos into the Photos app. There are some wifi-enabled drives that can be used to stream content to the iPad e.g. Seagate GoFlex Satellite

According to information Apple provided about Time Machine, yes, you can use either a Firewire or USB 2.0 external drive to backup your hard drive.
However, I would recommend Firewire as that appears to be more reliable and overall faster than the USB 2.0 counterpart.
