Firmware update problem solved after Win XP SP3 -upd

I'm one of the numerous victims of ZEN firmware updating problem. At the start I had Win XP SP2 and WMP. My player is ZEN Micro 5gb and after trying to update firmware it had firmware problem and stayed in the recovery mode. Firmware updater and ZEN Media Explorer couldn't recognize the player. So that's how I got it work again:
1. Rolled back WMP to WMP9, updated it to WMP0.
2. Removed ZEN Media Explorer and Jukebox driver (all Creative stuff) from Add/Remove programs in Control Panel.
It didn't solve the problem. I also tried my player with couple of other computers, but it didn't help either.
3. Installed Win XP SP3 -update.
4. Reinstalled driver for ZEN Micro in Control Panel.
5. Ran the firmware updater and this time it did recognize the player.
(6. Updated WMP back to version and the player's still working.)
Hope this will help you too.

I can start the upgrading process, but at around 95% it stops, and says "firmware upgrade failed." I didn't uninstall WMP though, because I have Vista, and I hae no idea how to do it. I can only get my computer to recognize my 6G Zen when I go into recovery mode and choose 'reload firmware' then I connect it to the computer and I can start trying to upgrade it. If I dont go into recovery mode, its just a blank screen, the computer doesnt recognize it, and I can't even turn it off without reseting.
?I've tried so much, now when I try to upgrade, it loads a little bit and jumos to the end quckly and says "firmware upgrade fails" and nothing works. Do I have to try to do all the things you listed to fix this?

  • Xcode and firmware update problem

    Hi all,
i've been working on my app for a few month now and i have about two more weeks until i finally submit it. everything went very good during development.. untill -
by ACCIDENT i've upgraded my firmware to 3.1.2
since my OS is 10.5.7, as i understand, i must install xcode 3.2.1. but this version also needs mac OS 10.6
so it's realy frustrating for me...
do i need now to upgrade/purchase OS 10.6 and also my xcode environment in order to continue working ?
can't i make a rollback to other firmware version supported by my current 3.1.2 xcode ?
i've searched the net endlessly and just couldn't find anyway to downgrade my firmware (i have a 5.11.7 baseband and 6.2 bootloader)
    please...
    any help ?

    Welcome to Creative forums!
Try booting the player in the recovery mode.
. While the ZEN is off, press and hold down the play/pause button.
    2. While holding down the play/push button, push the reset button slowly using a paper clip/pin. You should feel the "click" sound when press it.
    3. Slide the On/Off switch towards the power button and hold it down until the recovery boot screen appears.
Choose Clean Up then Reboot. If problem still persists, you may need to format the ZEN but take note that formatting will delete the contents of the device. To format the ZEN, boot the ZEN in the recovery mode again and choose Format this time.

  • Zen 8G This device cannot start code 10 and firmware update problem

I have read the threads in the forums on the same problem that I am having. It seems that there are few solutions for this and the ones that have been posted I have tried. Basically the problem is this, I made the silly mistake of trying to update the firmware on my Zen 8G since it was listed as a critical update. I downloaded the firmware but it failed and took me to the recovery screen. Instead of working with this, again silly me, I tried to use the Creative recovery tool. This downloaded the firmwary and started rebooting the player. At this point it just hung. I left it on for about 3 hours and nothing happened and it wouldn't turn off so I hit the reset button on the player. Now when I connect it to the computer it recognizes it as a creative zen but if I try to download the firmware the software says the player is not connected when it is. When I check the device driver, even though it shows it as a creative zen it says "This device cannot start code 0"? I have the latest Microsoft device driver loaded and it still doesn't work.
I have tried this on two different computers, one using XP and the other using Vista. I get the same problem with each. It appears to me that the problem is not really with the device driver but somehow with the firmware. However, I am not an expert at this stuff.
If anyone could please help I would appreciate it. This was a gift for my wife for the Christmas of 2007 so it is just out of warranty and the service people won't help.

  • Installation Problems, Permissions Problems, SW Update Problems, Solved

I'm posting here to relate some problems I've had and how I ultimately solved them, in the hope that it might help somebody.
The following relates to OS 10.5.4 on an imac PPC 1.8.
It started (at least the first symptom I noticed was) with Super Duper not working to auto-clone my drive, because the first thing SD does before running a clone job is to repair permissions on the subject drive. The repair permissions task failed with "the underlying task failed" error.
So I tried the manually repair permissions from Disk Utility and got the same "the underlying task failed" error. It's a bit alarming not to be able to repair permissions. I tried a reboot, no change. This persisted for at least a week as I didn't have time to aggressively go after it.
Then I purchased DiskWarrior (again - owned it years ago in Sys 9 days), as in my experience that was the "if all else fails" fix for everything directory-related. I booted from another blessed drive (do people still say that anymore? lol, showing my age) and ran DW on the drive in question. Sure enough DW found and fixed about 150 problems. Great I think, reboot from the original drive, run Disk Utility, repair permissions...nope! Same error. What now? I checked the console installer log for more and all the errors looked like "failure to write" permission type errors. Grr.
Verify Disk ran OK. I checked the SMART status and it was OK, as I was by now worrying about the physical drive.
Then along comes the 10.5.5 incremental update in Software Update and I get the following error: "The Installer could not install some files in "/" check permissions". Doh! Same thing with the Java update. Since I can't repair permissions I'm stuck.
So now I have only one course of action (well maybe there were others, but this is what I did) which was to do an Archive and Install. My OS X DVD is 10.5.0 so that is what I got of course when I reinstalled.
Running Disk Utility after the A&I allowed me to repair permissions successfully. Some progress. But now I had a slew of updates to get back to the present version of everything. Most installed successfully, except the 10.5.5 combo update. For that I got "package contents could not be validated". Rats.
So I decided (after reading here about SW update problems especially with combos) to manually download the 10.5.5 combo. For some reason running SW Update under 10.5.0 gave me download rates of 32kb/s, where I am used to 1.1MB/s. Projected download time 3 hrs....no way! So I booted back to my 10.5.4 clone and downloaded the 612MB at normal speed there. I downloaded the 10.5.1 incremental as well just in case.
Finally I was able to run the 10.5.5 combo (manually downloaded) successfully. Check Disk Utility and repair permissions...all good. Run SW Update and get the Java update, all good.
    Deep breath. Phew.
So there you have it. I was able to fix it all. I probably didn't need to buy DW (but it's so great I'm ok with that) as I conclude now that the A&I ultimately was the real fix. It was a very frustrating experience though, especially with SW update giving me a bad download.
I'm hoping that this post might now show up in searches and help somebody out there.
    Cheers

I don't think you have either of those kernels... as they don't exist.  I assume you meant that you are using 3.10.5 and supposedly have 3.10.6 installed.  You issue is a bit of a catch 22, as you are unable to mount the ESP (no vfat module matching your running kernel), yet mounting the ESP would be required in order to properly udpate.  I imagine that you actually have the correct kernel as /boot/vmlinuz-linux.  But whatever mechanism you use to copy it from that location to the ESP didn't work.
You are going to have to boot from live media, and fix this from a chroot.  Please search around for how to do this, as this information is all over the place.
Looks like I'm in for a treat. I chroot-ed, did a full upgrade in case there was an even newer kernel (and there was, 3.10.7). After the upgrade I copied /boot/vmlinuz-linux, /boot/initramfs-linux.img and /boot/initramfs-linux-fallback.img to /boot/efi/EFI/arch/ renaming the files vmlinuz-arch.efi, initramfs-arch.img, initramfs-arch-fallback.img respectively. I unmounted everything and rebooted. Now reFINd freezes as soon as it tries to boot Arch.

  • 10.6.8 Macbook Pro firmware update problem

I installed a couple of updates for my MBP 10.6.8.  One was Safari, the other was brand new, released within the last week, I think it was a firmware update, and now the machine will not boot into OSX.  I have a Bootcamp Windows 7 partition that starts fine.  But if I let it boot, or select the Mac partition, it shows the apple logo, then a little progress bar below it that gets to maybe 5-10%, then starts over, then the computer powers down.
I have tried clearing the flash by holding option+command+P+S.  Didnt work.
Is there a way I can boot to a command prompt and clear this update out or something?  Or anyway to fix this myself?  From the Windows partition maybe?

So...fixed my issue and it was not related to the updates, it was just coincidence.
What I finally did was take a video of the startup screen and was able to see that what was happening was fsck was failing, and then the system just halted.  This info presumably makes it to dmesg, but not to system.log (huge oversight IMO).  So its not easily discerned.
Once I figured that out I googled around and this guy's page helped me fix the problem:
    http://blog.jbheren.com/post/2011/02/09/repair-hfs-volume-on-osx
Specifically I had to boot into single user (command+S at the startup sound)
    and issue:
    fsck_hfs -ypr /dev/rdisk0s2
    Then I did
    reboot
    and here we are

  • Firmware update problem-- my macbook pro will not start

I think I took my finger off the power button and then put another finger down which turned my macbook pro off when I was installing some kind of firmware update... all I get now is a blank screen but the power button is on and it "feels" like something is going on inside but nothing... can some help? Thanks

I did explain how long to hold down the 'C' key in a previous post. Anyway, you should hold it down until you see the start up screen.
You could have a dirty or even a bad install DVD. If you could try it in another machine that would let you rule that out as a suspect. It's also possible that your DVD drive is damaged or bad. At this point it sounds like a trip to an Apple Store is in order.
Good Luck!! And please post back with your outcome, it might help someone in the same situation.
Edit: Did a little more checking around and found that this may be a common problem as in this other post...

  • My Xperia S (LT26i) firmware update problem and slowing problem

Hi, I have Xperia S (LT26i) and i tried to update my phone to 6.2.b.1.96 firmware using PC Companion bu couldn't accomplished. It gave a error after long pressing the volume down button and starting the firmware update process. So i had to turn back to old firmware. Secondly my phone is so slow. Facebook is opening approximately 20-25 secs. and gives "facebook is not responding" messages while using. Same is for telephone and browser. I factory resetted the phone a couple months ago and i dont want to reset the phone regularly. Can you give me an advice? Thanks in advance...

    A clean update
Performing a system repair using PC Companion - This will factory reset your phone and erase all data
Switch off your phone and unplug from Pc (Hold volume up and power for around 10 seconds)
Start PC Companion and select Support zone then Update my phone/tablet then in Blue Repair my phone/tablet and follow the on screen instructions - When prompted connect your phone still switched off holding volume down or back button - This should start the repair or reformat process
If you are using Windows 8/8.1 or a 64bit operating system then adjust the settings for PC Companion and run in compatibility mode and chose Windows 7 or XP

  • Firmware update problem ?

    Help !!!!!!
We purchased an eMac about a year ago and just recently decided to upgrade the old 400mhz G3 iMac to OS X 10.2.8, so my wife could use it as a stand alone for design stuff. Problem is that stupid me forgot to upgrade 9.0.4 to 9.1 and do the firmware update. Now we have a machine that won't recognize music CD's at all. I removed 9.0.4 when I installed OS X, because I didn't think we'd need it, now I can't reinstall it.
    Questions:
    1) Do I have to completely wipe the hard drive and start from scratch ? Install 9.0.4, upgrade to 9.1 or 9.2, perform firmware update, install OS X, updrade to OS X 2, update to OS X 10.2.8 ?
    2) If so, how in the name of all that's sainted do I do it ? How do you format the HD to start again ? Can I save the design programs on there, or do I have to do them again ?
    3) Is there no firmware update that can just be used with OS X 10.2.8 ?
Many thanks for any help you can give a technophobic ignoramous
    Cheers,
    Bryn

    1. Only if you erased the hard disk from the Disk Utility without installing the Mac OS 9 drivers. Otherwise, proceed as follows:
    1. Insert your iMac's Mac OS 9 installer CD into the drive and restart with the C key held down.
    2. Open the folder System:Library:CoreServices on your hard disk and drag the item named System to the desktop.
    3. Start installing Mac OS 9.
    4. Use the Startup Disk control panel on the CD to set the Mac OS 9 system on the hard disk as the startup disk.
    5. Restart your computer, download and run the 9.1 update, restart again, and update the firmware.
    6. Select the item named System on the desktop and choose Put Away from the File menu.
    7. Download this control panel to your machine and use that to select your Mac OS X system as the startup disk.

  • Firmware Update Problems

I was trying to use the Migration Assistant on my new Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro to move data from my old reliable G4 AGP Power Mac. The Firewire connection couldn't be made and the MA suggested I needed to update the firmware on the G4. I accordingly downloaded firmware update 4.2.8, re-booted the G4 into OS 9.2.1, and started to use the shutdown-programmer-switch-power-on routine in the documentation. This didn't work: the G4 put me into programmer's mode and I re-booted the machine and started over. That's when the trouble started.
I re-booted into OS 9.2.1 and started the firmware update again. This time the tone sounded, the progress bar appeared, and all appeared well for the moment. However, when the progress bar disappeared, I didn't get the message I was supposed to get about the firmware being updated. Instead, the machine suddenly gave the tone again twice and the power button blinked orange twice. Then it did the same thing again.
Now the G4 is completely unresponsive. I tried a restart and then a cold boot (power disconnected, re-boot). Nothing works. The start tone sounds, as usual, and the hard disk starts to spin, but then stops. I tried to re-boot from the CD drive using the OSX 10.4.8 install disk that came with the Macbook Pro, but there was no response at all, after the initial startup tone and an initial click or two from the hard disk. The CD drive never started to spin. I'm at a loss as to what to do next, but I'm going to try the OSX 10.3 install disk next. If I can't get any response to the drives, however, I'm not sure that will do any good.
I called Apple, but they no longer support my G4. Their suggestion was to try to retrieve the data from the hard disk. I'm hoping someone here has a better alternative than that; I was planning to use the G4 for other work. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Hi, Tracy -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
...the machine suddenly gave the tone again twice and the power button blinked orange twice.
That may be the clue. According to Apple KBase Article #58442 - Power On Self-Test Pt. 2 that would indicate there is no usable RAM available.
Unfortunately, several years ago some 3rd-party manufacturers of RAM sold a number of modules which did not quite meet Apple's design specs, but which were good enough to pass the startup self-test criteria at the time.
One of the things that the 4.2.8 firmware update does is to tighten down on the requirement that RAM modules must meet the original design criteria (I understand this was done in consideration of the pickiness of OSX about RAM quality and performance). Many of the sub-spec modules won't meet that requirement - having the startup test, they are locked out at startup. If all the RAM modules are of that type. there is no RAM left with which to boot the machine.
If you have any of the original RAM modules that came with that machine (from Apple, not from a 3rd-party reseller), try putting that module in it and booting to OS 9. You may need to borrow a good module from a friend.
Once you get it booted to OS 9, download and run DIMM First Aid - this utility can perform some basic tests on RAM modules, but more importantly it can often repair the coding on many sub-spec modules that used to work prior to the 4.2.8 firmware update, thus recovering them. Swap out modules as necessary (shutting down between each swap) until all are repaired that can be.

  • Post-Firmware Update Problems--HELP

Several weeks ago I downloaded the Firmware update for my MBP. My MBP had an intermittent history of going to sleep and not waking up. When I ran the update, my MBP crashed and would not reboot. I had to obtain a copy of an original firmware disk from my local Apple dealer and load that in order to get my computer to operate.
Thereafter, using "original" firmware, my MBP had a regular problem with unexpected shut downs. I just got around to re-downloading and installing the recommended firmware update, and I am experiencing the unexpected quits again! Quits occur without regard to battery charge level. Since the update the quits happen within a couple of minutes of use. Before update the quits would happen later than the first couple of minutes of use. These unexpected quits are tethering me to an outlet and making me crazy.
    1. Was the firmware update suppose to correct my original problem (not waking from sleep occassionally)?
    2. Was the firmware update suppose to correct my new problem (unexpected quits)? If so, why didn't it?
    3. Is it possible that the crash several weeks ago caused another software problem that is causing confusion regarding power availability?

I sent my computer in last week with that same problem, and another case issue. They repaired the case and replaced some sensors.
But when I called Apple because I was STILL having unexpected Quits when I got it back, they said the Apple Care technician couldn't duplicate the Quits.
Does anyone think this is a power supply issue? Because when I plugged it in and started it up, it seemed to be okay. Or is it a motherboard issue? It seems to be working now that I've run disk utility from the install cd, and since I've plugged it in. Should I send it back in?

  • Remote firmware update problems

I am a newbie to our school G5 Xserve and have been just recently updating and getting my feet wet. From the Server Admin program I have come across the firmware update but can't seem to get it to actually run. I have read and tried any and all items I have found around the Apple site to no avail.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93980
Is the doc that I keep referring to but get nowhere.
We are running our Xserve headless and as such no video card or any other of the usual options like keyboard, etc.
The biggest help would be the proper protocol for Terminal on my Powerbook. I am a newbie to Terminal overall, only played a little with it as needed in the past. I have repeatedly read and typed, as well as copied and pasted, Apple's example and get nowhere. Keeps coming back with:
-sh: fg: %: no such job.
I have looked and the updater file is indeed in the Utilities folder on the startup drive as stated by the 93980 doc.
I know I am missing something rather simple. Any kick in the right direction will be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

  • GeForce 7300 Firmware Update problem

When I tried to run the GeForce Firmware update today, I got this message:
"Necessary resources are missing, corrupt, or do not have the correct permissions. Delete the GeForce 7300 GT Firmware Update and re-download it and run it again."
So I delete it, re-download it, and I get the same message. Any thoughts on why this is?

Normally I feel ready and prepared to do any update, always backed up and such, but of course updating firmware is special, whether SMC, EFI, or for a controller (or disk drives).
I held off until now, did the other updates that came out this week, did a Safe Mode restart, and... updated fine.
I do wish something more technical was given for why it is needed or what is changed as a result. I don't like being in the dark.
Do you have a small "emergency" boot drive should also consider creating one (with just Apple software and your disk utilities). Might need it from time to time. And get into the habit of doing some preventative maintenance.

  • Firmware update problem with raid mirrored drives and solution

Note this - the firmware update will not install from a software mirrored boot drive. It will install just fine from a non-mirrored clone. So, make a clone, set it as your boot drive from system preferences, and all is good.

Well this is a pain, this is what I figured I would have to do but c'mon apple, I am sure people are not going want to hassle with making a clone, finding or buying a single drive to install the OS to, boot that drive, install the firmware patch, reboot, make sure it took, tear down the system, swap the soft-RAID set of drives back in etc. etc. etc.
This is another reason why Apple need to take note from the PC world, I know they like to "Think Different" when it comes to things like this but they really need to give access to and write a driver for the supported on-chip hardware RAID controller located in the Motherboards Southbridge chip of THIS motherboard, just like all other woodcrest Xeon based systems running the same intel motherboard chipset!
I am sure this post will get me a long list of flames from the Apple fanboys explaining how what Apple is doing is really better, or telling me that if I want hardware RAID 5 to just go and buy $6000 xServe RAID setup.
Well I better quit typing so I can tear apart my system, find a hard drive to install OSX on.....See you guys in a few hours

  • IMac G3 Firmware Update Problems

I just got an old iMac G3 from a school I work at and I would like to put OS 10.3 on it. It already has OS 9.2.2 on it, and I am trying to update the firmware to 4.1.9, but I can't seem to find the Firmware Updater program on my Mac. As I said, this was a school computer and it has a program called FoolProof on it. I don't know if this matters. Please help, because I am stuck. Thanks a lot in advance.
    iMac G3   Mac OS 9.2.x

this was a school computer and it has a program called FoolProof on it.
I recommend you turn off FoolProof. It is a program which will prevent you from doing certain things. It's a hassle you do not need.
Hold down the shift key when you poweron the mac. I hold down the shift key on the left. A large icon with 9.2 will appear. You should see the words extension off when you booted.
    Look in
harddrive > system folder > extensions
    for the foolproof programs:
    FoolProof Shared Lib
    FoolProof Remote
    FoolProof INIT
What you need to do is move these program out of the extensions folder. You will probably see a folder like extensions (disabled). If not, create this folder. Move these three files to extensions (disabled).
When foolproof is running and I try to move an icon, the icon bounces back to it's original position.

  • [PROBLEM SOLVED] After last update, Can't use keyboard in Xorg

Apparently the last system upgrade installed "xf86-input-keyboard-1.3.2-1-i686" but I reverted back to "xf86-input-keyboard-1.3.1-1-i686" and everything is working again.
Lesson learned: put all xorg related packages to hold because my geforce2 mx440 won't need updates.
This is just frustrating. After doing a system upgrade (which upgraded xorg to version 1.5) I can't use the keyboard anymore. In fact, my screen would freeze also, as long as I was using the latest Xorg version. This machine's card is a geforce2 mx440.
So I downgraded xorg-server with pacman -Rd xorg-server and pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/xorg-server-yadayada1.4yadayada; Fine, I can use the mouse and open X just as normal as before. BUT the keyboard seems helpless.
