First windows only safe mode boots. Now system won't power up. :(

First A Hearty Thank You
First of all, thank you all for helping me with my issues here( https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?threadid=50738&sid=&hilight=Bamaboy ).  And thanks Bas for the heads up on the 1 Gig of RAM thing with Windows98.  That's one possibility I hadn't even considered.  (But it still seems strange that it would even go into safe-mode witth the 1gig, does it not? )
But A Whole New Gremlin Rises To Challenge Me
But now I have a whole new issue that may prevent me from even trying your suggestions from before.  While experimenting on different ways to get my system running, I took off one of the front panel USB connectors and inserted the D-Bracket thingie, and the system booted once normally (well, normal meaning I could access the BIOS/Windows Safe mode, etc ).  And after that, it won't boot at all!
*sigh*
How do I kill THIS Gremlin?
Does anyone have any idea what the problem could have been?  I didn't smell anything fun, so I don't think anything fried, but I could be wrong.  I've tried turning off and disconnecting the power supply, but nothing.  The fan don't come on, and I don't hear anything powering up at all.
Any ideas?

Not sure exactly what I did to do the trick.  I unplugged one of the front panel USB connectors as suggested, and I turned off and unplugged the PSU and restarted.  And everything powered up!  I still have no idea why this worked, but I'm not complaining.
Now I'm at least back to square one of trying to figure out how to get Win98 to load up.

  • I tried to install latest OS update. Recd error installing. IT tried to load the upgrade in Safe Mode. Now system will not boot up. IT says I have to do a clean install which loses all data.

After receiving an error when I try to install the latest update of OS-X, I took my laptop to oour schools IT dept. They tried to run the update in safe mode and then they got an error saying the system could not find the hard drive. Now they want to run a clean install which loses 1000's of docs and pictures. I have Block I exams in med school next Monday and all of my notes and slides are on that hard drive.
The IT dept took the hard drive out and tried to back it up and they said they other computer could not connect or find my hard drive.
    Major panic....
I have Norton antivirus and have never found any viruses on the system. I also have a program called ExamSoft which some other students here have noted they had similar crashes. Not sure if that is the issue...

    Several take home messages here:
always back up before you update.
always back up anything you don't want to lose. Kind of like flossing. Only floss the teeth you don't want to lose.
Norton is very, very bad software, and you should get rid of it.
You don't need antivirus software on your mac. Antivirus software on macs causes more trouble than it is worth.
Your hard drive may be failing and thus may not be salvageable.
You could try booting into the recovery partition and seeing if you can repair your hard drive.
If that doesn't work, then there is a small chance that a third party utility (like Disk Warrior or TechTool) might be able to fix your drive (if it is not failing).
If that doesn't work, you may be able to send your drive and a lot of cash to a drive recovery service and see if they can get your files off it.
In the mean time, get notes and slides from a (smart) friend.

  • Firefox 22.0 ONLY connects to Internet in Windows 7 'Safe Mode' (IE does connect)

FireFox 22.0 only works in Windows 7 'Safe Mode'. Any other program on computer that needs the Internet connects fine; i.e. the Internet connection is good.
Have not recently installed an update, nor 'Add-On'; this is PURELY a FireFox problem. The problem started "suddenly".. no new installs of programs etc.
    Actions:
    - Deleted Firefox; Re-Installed it → Same result, FF does not connect
    - Reset Computer to earlier time/date → Same result.
    - Created new FireFox Profile; signed in with new profile → Same result.
    - Renamed 'Firefox.exe' to 'Firefox1.exe' → Same Result
    - Run 'Norton Antivirus' scan → no problems found; Same result
    - Deleted "Norton AntiVirus' → Same result.
    - Run latest updated 'Malwarebytes Anti-Malware' scan → no problems found; Same result
    - Deleted 'Anti-Malware' → Same result.
    - Cleaned Registry of any 'Mozilla' and 'FireFox' reference → Same result
→ Checked in 'Safe Mode' 'Task Manager - Processes' ... few files there.
→ Checked in 'Normal Mode' 'Task Manager - Processes'.. a lot of files there...
    > In 'Normal Mode' deleted 'Processes' files to bare minimum, testing FireFox after each deletion → Same Result.
    Note:
In Windows 7 'Safe Mode', there are two files which are NOT shown in 'Normal Mode' in
    'Task Manager - Processes';
    - ctfmon.exe &
    - dllhost.exe.
Can't find info on them if they're needed by FireFox or not to connect to the Internet.
    > In 'Safe Mode': they are present, and FF connects.
    > In 'Normal Mode': they're not present, FF does NOT connect.
    Could still be coincidence.
As for the "Troubleshooting Information" that's associated with the Question page for posting this question ("..This information gives details about the internal workings of your browser that will help in answering your question...."):
"...A window will (NOT) open in the top corner..."...
Because it ONLY works in FireFox webbrowser.. and guess what?...
My Mozilla FireFox Web Browser can NOT connect to the Internet... (See Top of this Question Page).
And guess what happens when I click on "...Try these manual steps..." to provide troubleshooting information?!?!?!?
Another "..Fill in the details of your question.." page opens up...
Anybody any thoughts? Pascal Finette? Jamie Zawinski? Dave Hyatt? Joe Hewitt? Blake Ross?
Maybe anybody else from the Netscape Navigator days still around??!?! ;-)

Had deleted '''HideMyIP-P''' from computer recently, and didn't have problems untill I re-started computer... Which, come to think of it now, wasn't until a few days after deleting ''''HMIP-P''''... (computer is 'on' 24/7).
Then, on start-up, it wouldn't allow FireFox to connect to the Internet.
After reading through the website you recommneded, which mentiond ''HideMyIP-P'', I re-Installed ''HMIP-P'', then turned the "hiding" 'off' and was allowed(!) with FireFox to connect again.

Pop up window: "Firefox Safe Mode". says: "Firefox is now running in Safe Mode, which temporarily disables your custom settings, themes an extensions". Pls. help what does this mean and what should we do. Thank you

On what kind of computer (Operating System) and with which Firefox version does this happen?
You seem to have posted this question with a iPad according to the system details list.

  • Since I upgraded Windows Vista to Windows 7 iTunes only works in Windows 7 "Safe Mode".

Since I upgraded Windows Vista to Windows 7 iTunes only works in Windows 7 "Safe Mode". it will not run in the normal mode. (It ran properly in Vista)  I spent several hours with the Microsoft Technician going through the "1717 suggestions, but to no avail.  On my own, I tried iTunes in Windows 7 "Safe Mode" and was successful!  It ran like a charm.  Unfortunately, I can't run iTunes properly in "Safe Mode"  I have not tried moving one set of the files yet.  But if iTunes works in Safe Mode, do I need to relocate anything or do I need to find what is causing the conflict between Windows 7 and iTunes?

    Which Satellite A205?
Which Windows 7 (64-bit)? What about the other laptop?
Which printer model, version, and so forth?

  • Safe mode boot?

hello, i am trying to start photoshop CS6 in safe mode to solve some strange application behavior..Can someone give me instructions how to do it?

It's an interesting idea though.  One issue might be screen resolution.  Photoshop needs a minimum screen size in pixels, and you probably going to be looking at SVGA (according to your monitor's aspect ratio).  You can give it a go though, and I think 1024 x 768 was the minumum spec for Photoshop so you might be OK.
F8 on boot is a common switch for Safe Mode with PC systems, but Google your particular hardware if that doesn't work.  You may find you have to repeatedly hit F8 while starting the computer to hit the right moment.
Note:  Your desktop icons might be scruched into a corner when you next start the computer normally after Safe Mode.

  • POSReady7x32 F8 Safe mode boot

I have just done a clean install of PoSReady7 32 bit.
No additional drivers or Windows updates installed.
    OS boots to desktop ok.
However, when I press F8 and select a safe mode boot option, the OS boots as far as the Welcome screen with the animated circle. At this point it reboots! No error message displayed.
Does the same reboot when I use MSCONFIG to force a safe mode boot.
When I use MSCONFIG to force safe mode boot and also select F8 boot option 'Last known good configuration' then OS boots into safe mode ok.
Anyone got any ideas as to why I cannot get into safe mode by just selecting it from F8 boot menu?

    Thanks for the suggestion.
The usual Windows boot menu is already being displayed ok when F8 is pressed before Windows OS starts loading.
Anyway, I entered 'bcdedit /set {bootmgr} displaybootmenu yes' which completed successfully but it hasn't stopped the OS from rebooting when I use the F8 safe boot option.

If it works in Windows Safe mode then you have a problem with other software, possibly security software or a system driver, that is running on your computer.<br />
It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • I put my macbook into target disk mode and now it won't start up in regular mode

I put my macbook into target disk mode and now it won't start up in OSX. I have used my install disk and repaired the drive. I have held down the option key to choose the system. I have tried to start in safe mode with same result. The apple screen appears, but the gear just keeps turning. I can get it back into target disk mode by connecting it by firewaire to my macbook pro. It will start up in Windows when I choose that system. What can I do to get it to start up with OSX?
    Thanks for your help.

Try this from MacFixIt as well:
In the case of drive directory damage or problems with permissions, the solution is usually to use Apple's Disk Utility to repair the disk. Of course, you won't be able to perform this operation normally (simply launching the Disk Utility application, located in Applications/Utilities, and initiating a disk repair) if your system will not startup. So two options exist:
    * Insert your Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) media (DVD or CD) and restart the computer while holding down the "C" key. Once the computer has booted from the installation disc, select "Utilities" from the menubar and open Disk Utility. Repair the disk, then quit Disk Utility and restart your system.
    * Alternatively, you can repair the disk while booted in single user mode if you do not have access to a retail Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) DVD/CD. To startup in single user mode, hold down the "Command" and "S" keys simultaneously at startup. Once properly booted, type the command fsck at the prompt. Repeat these process until no errors appear.

  • FF won't restart in safe mode...it won't even shut down.

you know that soft clicking noise you can hear in your computer? Mine stopped doing that a little while ago. It's eerily quiet.
Also, I keep getting hung up. If I watch a video on youtube (for example) FF freezes & I have to shut down the plug-in container to get things going again.
I've tried restarting the computer, but it didn't help. My system idle process is showing the number 99 in my task manager's CPU column, & I think that's related to my problems. Sometimes when I open task manager I can see that CPU Usage (at the bottom) is at 100%, but in a second it usually goes back down to 15% or less.
SO I came to the FF support page, where it was suggested that I '''restart my browser in safe mode. But it won't restart. '''It won't even shut down all the way. FF & the plug-in container are both showing as open in Task Manager.
SO when I manually shut them down, & then open FF again & check my plug-ins, none of them have been disabled (as they should be if FF had restarted in safe mode).

By soft clicking noise, what exactly do you mean? If you are hearing a clicking noise in your computer that then stopped, it is possibly your hard drive dying, or a fan in the computer that dies. You shouldn't have "clicking" noises in a PC.
As for system Idle Process, that is just the percentage of the CPU that isn't being used, if that is at 99%, it means that only 1% of your CPU is being used at that moment.
Now, as for starting Firefox in Safe Mode, let's try this. Restart your computer, then while you start Firefox, hold down the Shift Key. You should have a small box open up with a bunch of checkboxes. Don't check any of them right now. Just Continue in Safe Mode. This is Firefox safe mode, all customizations, themes, addons, etc. will be disabled. If you don't get the freezing here, restart Firefox, and disable your add-ons one by one until you find the culprit.
Also, you can try updating your graphics driver to see if this is an issue with Hardware acceleration. [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-upgrade-my-graphics-drivers https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-upgrade-my-graphics-drivers] has more details.

The following support article is somewhat outdated. Where it refers to booting from an installation disc, you should boot from your recovery partition (if running 10.7 or later) by holding down the key combination command-R at the chime.

  • KT3v MS6712 System Won't power up after RAM upgrade

hello this is my first posting to this forum and I hope someone might be able to help on this as I am totally stumped.  I have been running my KT3V MS6712 mobo with 256MB since it was built. The manual for this mobo says it can handle up to 3GB RAM in any order or size. I have 3 DIMM slots and thought it would be more cost effective to just
purchase 1 DIMM leaving the other 2 slots free.  So I decided to  upgrade to 1GB and I bought a Kingston 1Gb PC2100 266MHz DIMM and installed it on my system.  Now my system won't power on at all. When I press the power button on the PC, the CPU fan spins for like 1-2 seconds then stops.  The system appears to be completely dead.  Cos I thought the problem was down to the new RAM installation I thought better put my old 256 DIMM back, however I still get the same problem. I have tried swopping both DIMMS into different slots but still doesn't work. The system was working fine until I did the RAM upgrade. I tried resetting the CMOS by moving the jumpers around in case it was a BIOS issue, still hasn't made a difference. Dunno if its the PSU which has suddenly gone, however seems strange. There are no beeps from the system or lights flashing to indicate anything.  I don't have
the D-Bracket installed either. I have also never upgraded the BIOS on this system as it has always been stable. The CPU is not overclocked. Has anyone had this problem before after a RAM upgrade?  Hope I have given you enough information

Suntek is perhaps not the best of PSU makers, but a sudden collapse is not so common. You normally notice problems earlier.
I took a big beating last time I said this , but it is important that there is no power in the system when changing memory sticks.
It sounds a bit like the processor went away for holiday. Have you any data on the processor temperature? Is there any activity at all? Does the processor heat sink get warm?

  • My MBP crashes with diagonal video issues, and will only boot in Safe Mode. Now what?

My 17" MBP (2007, 2.33 mHz) crashed the other night as I was trying to copy some music off a friend's iPod. Now, on boot, it will show the gray Apple logo, then clear the screen, but never go farther (and the fan starts up a terriific rumble after a few minutes). It is also showing distorted diagonal lines across the display.
    Things I've found:
    * It won't boot to the OSX Leopard DVD, just spins, and spits out the Snow Leopard DVD
    * If I put it in FW Target mode it will mount on my iMac, but the FW 800 port is so skitchy/loose it loses connection eventually
    * If I boot it in safe mode, everything works--no video distortion, can connect to a USB drive, which I did to back up the entire contents, and I can mount the Leopard DVD
    * During that backup (using Chronosync), no disk errors except for an Aperture library failure.
I'm not sure what to do next. Boot to the Leopard DVD via safe mode to renistall the system, hoping that it'll work after it restarts? If I were in OS9 I'd be using extension manager to turn features on and off to see what's crashing, but it doesn't look like I have that capability with Safe Boot.
Any thoughts would be welcome, let me know of any other info you need.
    Thanks!
Oh, two other things: I ran disk utility and repaired permissions, didn't fix the problem. And I don't have one of the video cards from that era that was covered by Apple even after warranty, one of the first things I checked
