Fix PC Card slot on PowerBook G4

It works when booted off of the Leopard install disk so I decided to try putting the driver off of my iBook G4. now it just says that the driver cannot be used

Yes is there a way to fix it without reinstalling Mac OS X?

  • How and if I can update my airport card slot in my Powerbook G4.

I bought a used powerbook G4 a week ago, and it was in good condition, but it did'nt come with an airport card. So I went out and bought the new airport extreme card from london drugs, and read my manual on how to install it. Then I took the laptop apart and tried to fit the airort extreme card into the slot but it wouldnt fit, so then I kept on reading the manual and found out that my laptop is equiped with the original airport card slot for the original airport card that apple has discontinued, and that the airport extreme card does not go in that slot so I was just wondering if I have to buy and install a new slot that fits the airport extreme card? Can some one please help me out thanks!
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

You cannot use an AirPort Extreme card in your model of Mac. Your options for wireless access are:
    1. Use the original AirPort card.
    2. Purchase a third-party wireless card which will fit in your computer's PCMCIA slot.
    3. Use an Ethernet adaptor such as this one.
    4. Use an USB wireless adapter. This should only be done if you can't use any of the other options.

    Dear Romko,

I ordered an eSATA card at OWC and I am keen to find out, whether this will be my solution!

  • A faulty AirPort Express card slot

    Hey everyone,
I was wondering if someone could help me with a problem I've been having.
I have a 15 inch powerbook G4 aluminum. I bought a airport extreme card about 8 months ago. it's been working perfectly fine until a few days ago. One day, I lost all connection to the internet, My MAC can't read the airport card anymore. So it thinks there is no airport at all. I tried taking out the airport extreme card and installing it back in, but my MAC still can't read the card. I double checked to make sure I put the card in correctly. But still nothing. Then later that day, i went to the apple store to see if it was my airport card. They tested the card on another MAC and it worked perfectly fine. They also checked to see if my software was a problem and that was fine. So I assume there is something wrong with the airport card slot itself??
Is there any way to fix this without paying an arm and a leg to have the apple tech people fix it?? Your help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

hngodesign, Welcome to the discussion area!
It sounds like your PowerBook's motherboard has a defect in the area of the AirPort Extreme card connector. The only solution to that is to replace the motherboard.
An alternative is to forget about the AirPort Extreme card and instead get a compatible wireless PCMCIA card for the PCMCIA slot on your PowerBook.

  • Hi, I have a Lenovo 3000 n100 that does not recognize the dvd player or SD memory card slot

Hi, this is my first time on here so forgive me if I don't give all of the right information, I will try.  Until about a month ago my dvd player and SD memory card slot worked fine.  I was attempting to download pictures from the SD memory card to my laptop when for some reason it not only stopped reading the memory card but it erased it also.  I tried to watch a movie on it to see if it was working and it is not.  I checked the computer to see if I could manually turn it on and neither the memory card slot or the dvd player show up at all.  Is this a driver problem and if so how do I fix it.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks, Linda

I have struggled with the same thing, until about 1/2 hour ago....And its real simple.  I'm not a techy but here's what worked for me.
Since Lenovo doesn't send boot discs you are going to have to create one.  I went to http://www.ntfs.com/boot-disk.htm and downloaded the trial version - good for 10 days.  If this works for you then you should buy the software (that goes w/o saying).
Once loaded to your machine you will need to create a DVD (CD may work as well, all I had was DVD's handy).  Just lauch the application and it will do this for you.
Then you need to insert the DVD/CD into your player and restart the machine.
Once lauched the Software will lauch the Active@ Boot Disk menu.  One of the options (going from memory here) was to give you a windows prompt.  I simply typed c: and took me to the C drive.  Then I typed chkdsk /f c:
I was then told my c drive was locked (sounds familiar I bet) but this time I was given the option to dismount the volume which I did.  And it finally ran chkdsk, found and corrected all errors.
I rebooted my machine, launched diskeeper,  and guess what - I can finally defrag my harddrive now which is sorely overdue!
Good luck.  I hope this works for you!

You can try out this process and see if it helps:
Troubleshooting Audio Problems with External Speakers, Headphones, and HDMI Sound Devices
I assume that you probably already have seen this, but for your convenience, here is the support page for your notebook: HP 15-r029wm Notebook PC Drivers
The newest audio driver I could find there for your notebook has these parameters:
    Released: 2014-02-21
    Version 6.0.1.7156
    Realtek High-Definition (HD) Audio Driver
The version number matches the one you gave but the date is different.
You can always try the Realtek site, for their drivers, however, they are not going to be customized to match the components in your notebook, but you could try and then go back if it does not help.

  • Where can i buy an airport extreme card for my powerbook

Where can I buy an airPort extreme caed for my powerbook? are they even available, if not how can I go wireless ?

eBay is a good source, though as ever, buy wisely and make sure you get the right card for your specific model.
Alternatively there are wireless cards available that go in the card slot. Again eBay is full of them but be sure they're OSX compatible -  its a good idea to put this phrase in your search terms.
I can vouch that this one works as I'm using it now:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SAGEM-PCMCIA-AIRPORT-54MBPS-WIRELESS-WIFI-CARD-MAC-OS-X-/4 00124141388?pt=UK_Computing_Apple_Mac_Accessories&hash=item5d2941df4c#ht_3229wt_ 886
It just plugged straight in and was recognised as an Airport Card. This is from the UK site but I'm sure you can find the same thing wherever you live, or at that price just have it shipped.

  • New Draft-N Card for Legacy PowerBook (PPC based)

Any words yet or recommendation on a wireless card for legacy PowerBook (PPC-based) systems? I know the newer systems have the updated AirPort Extreme (using the Draft-N enabler), but what about others who have older PowerBooks with a user-installable card. Will Apple be creating a new wireless card for use in these systems? Or is there a 3rd Party compliant card to use in the PC Slot of the PB G4 that is Draft-N and works with the new AirPort Extreme base station N?

    I doubt it.
When Airport was upgraded the last time (from 802.11b to 802.11g), the older hardware was stuck with integrated cards that could not be upgraded.
Is this Apple being mean? Not really.
The new n hardware needs two or three antennas to work. Older laptops with 802.11g have only one antenna built into the case - so you can't simply upgrade the card.
The only way to upgrade is if a third-party manufacturer produces a mac-compatible version. Which could happen. But it would be the sort of card that sticks out of the PC-Card slot.
It's not ideal, but remember that laptops get upgraded all the time, and you can't upgrade the processor or the screen either.

  • HP 6910p laptop with Matshita ujda775 dvd drive and SIM Card slot

    Hello everyone ,
I have an HP Compaq 6910p with Windows 7 ultimate 32bit installed, the laptop has Matshita ujda775 DVD Drive,
After a search about its specifications I found on ehow - Matshita UJDA775 Specifications that it can write to CDs  but when I try it says "Blank CD/DVD not detected " .
how can I do it, If it is true that it can write to CDs?
Another question is how to use the SIM card slot in my laptop to connect to the internet?
    Thank you.

Yes it should burn CDs. Try the fix linked in this prior thread:
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-e-g-Windows-8/Optical-Drive-Will-Not-Burn/m-p/2795995...
The SIM card slot takes a WAN card that must be registered on a network like Verizon or Sprint and will give you access like a smartphone. There is a monthly charge involved.

  • Satellite P300-150 PSPC4E: Cannot get Express Card slot working with XP

    Hello.
I have downgraded to XP on my machine and unfortunetly I am unable to get the Express card slot to work.
The Intel chipset drivers on the Toshiba site haven't dont anything.
I am trying to get an eSata port working via the express card like I did with Vista but no joy at all.
    Any ideas?
    Regards
    Rob

Go to Device Manager and check if the express card is installed properly, or if its reporting an error.
You should update the BIOS to the latest version. BIOS updates can sometimes fix problems like this.
And ensure you have XP Service Pack 2 or 3 installed.

  • PC card adapter for Powerbook

My wife's employer would assign her an old 15" Powerbook or buy a new Windoze laptop, so she did the right thing and took the Powerbook. Now, the problem is that it doesn't have an Airport Card installed, isn't Airport Extreme capable, and I'd like to add 802.11b (good enough for her needs) or better.
There are several brands of PC card NICs for .11b/g, and elsewhere in this forum I saw a recommendation for a Linksys, but most mfrs. including Linksys, don't show compatibility with OS X (10.4) or offer driver downloads. Could I guess that the Airport driver will run them or should I continue searching for someone who makes an OS X compatible PC card & driver? I have standard Airport in my iBook to run Admin Utility for the home network, so that isn't a consideration - more improtant to have compatibility with hotels and convention centers that she visits.
    Thanks!
Dual USB original white iBook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Yes, all PowerBook G4s are Airport ready. The Aluminium PowerBooks require the Airport Extrememe card while the PowerBook Titanium (I'm not entirely sure if it's all in this case) require the original Airport card which is no longer available.
Presuming your wife has an Aluminium she will find the slot for the Airport card in the battery bay. You can find the installation instructions here…

  • Built in SD Card Slot issues - Canon XSi

I have had a Canon Digital Rebel XSi for a few years now and it has always worked well with my macbook and iphoto. I recently upgraded to the Macbook Pro (early 2011) and was pretty excited about being able to leave the USB cable behind.
    Here's where it gets interesting:
When I pop the SD card out of my camera and put it into my macbook pro the SD card shows up on the desktop and in iphoto 2011, however it doesn't have anything on it except for the default folders that the camera creates. No photos.
I could also see that there was occupied space on the SD card, no files but used space
When I put my SD card back in the camera and got an error of "Cannot create folder" so I couldn't use it or see the photos anymore
I used a restore program to get all the photos I'd taken over the weekend trip off the card
Next I decided to reformat the SD card in the Canon XSi, I popped off a few pics and put the card back in the Macbook and I was able to import them
Cool it was fixed... well, actually I put it back in the camera after importing and "Cannot create folder" again! Again the card is useless
I updated the firmware on the XSi to the latest 1.1.0 version and tried it all again, but still the same results
There is a fix and it's simple enough. If I just continue to use the USB cable everything works normally. I will of course do this, but I'd love to use the new SD card slot and not corrupt my card. I'm curious if anyone else is having similar issues. I'm also concerned that when I grab photos from a friend's SD card that I'll break it, and that just aint cool.
Thanks to anyone who reads through this exciting post and offers any suggestions.

You could have a faulty slot, aluxious.
Have you tried inserting the card in the slot as quickly as possible, rather than gently, though. I've found a couple of mine at least don't mount if I insert them too slowly. (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3553 seems to confirm the need for this).
Checked with various cards, and made sure the contacts on the cards are clean and undamaged, I guess?
    Cheers

  • SD card slot not workin

I have an HP Touchsmart 15-r053cl running windows 8.1. Im having an issue with the built in SD Card reader. It was working fine when i got the laptop, but it stopped working some time ago and I have not been able to get it fixed. I've tried alost everything. I've uninstalled and reintalled the driver several times. Even tried different kinds of drivers and still no luck.  the computer does not recognize when an sd card is inserted at all. it makes no sound. no messages pop up. Is as if i had not inserted anything. I've also tried different SD cards and still nothing. no response from the notebook whatsoever.

    Hi  ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. It is a great site for information and questions. I have looked into your issue about your HP ENVY TouchSmart 15-j053cl Notebook and your SD card slot not working correctly. Here is a link to help troubleshoot the Memory Card reader. The section you need to look at is SDHC card locks up or the SDHC card cannot be read.  You can do a system restore. System restore will help if something automatically updated and did not go well on the Notebook. When performing a System restore please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices as they can cause issues.I would also check into the device manager to see if there is anything in there that shows a complication. What is the manufacturer of the SD card as your does only 32GB for Secure Digital cards? Hope this helps you out. Thanks.

  • Sd card slot not working. HELP

hi I have had my macbook pro 13'3 for 5 months
just now I have tried to put my SD card in the SD slot and it goes in lopsided and doesn't read
do i take it to the genius bar or what?
also it is hard to fit in and it has had some more problems like a dead pixel which I haven't got fixed yet and it doesn't go to sleep properly (and i'm not an uncareful person it has never been droped or any thing.)
really need an answer on this guy's
    Ben.

I purchased an iMac Friday July 27. I think I may have a solution that worked for me but requires a delicate touch and good eyesight. What the issue was the first time I insert a SD card it would read it no problem. Then when I ejected to insert another, it would not mount unluss I restarted the iMAc with the card inserted.
In searching the forums I found one user said it is a microswitch contact n the iMacs internal SD card that detects a card is present.
The remedy is to work this switch a bit. If you look inside the SD card slot on the side of the iMac, you will see a variety of contacts that engage the SD card's contacts. But on the very top in the back is a small metal contact that lines up with the 45 degree angled edge of the SD card.
So by using a tooth pick or another non-conductive piece, VERY GENTLY work this switch in and out. First couple times I did it, it would reset the switch, but card would remount again on the second try. But as I did it more it finally started working.
The other thing I did was shut down the computer, unplugged it from the wall for at least 15 seconds. plugged it back in and waited 5 more seconds.
Then on start up I reset the PRAM. By once you hit the power button, immediately hold option(alt)+command+P+R all at the same time. Keep them held down until you hear the second chime. Was told reseting the PRAM resets the hardware memory that sometimes can become corrupt. Can't say for sure this helped, but right out of the box I installed new RAM into my iMac. So it's possible something got screwed up in the process.
But I think massaging thecontact did the trick.
It's not hard, but be carefull to damage or overly bend the contact. Take it in if you feel uncomfortable doing this.
