Flash for Linux?

The latest Flash Player for Linux has major version 7. More
and more Websites exist for which version 7 is not sufficient
anymore. Are newer versions of the Flash Player ported to Linux? If
so, does anybody know any release date?

That's nice for you :)

Personally, I'm quite happy with Windows, and as the software
I develop is
for Windows, and it has al the tools I need for doing that ..
so it makes no
sense for me to use anything else. So I will decline your
invitation, it
really would just be a waste of time for me with my current
job etc.
And for others, such as yourself, Linux can very well be the
better choice
(for the various reasons you outline).
Its all a matter of your requirements and what the various
platforms offer
to meet those requirements.
> Evidently you are a mainstream user, and there is
nothing wrong with that,

to Linux.
I do understand, but it really is irrelevant to the
complaints here. Noone
is saying that Linux is a bad operating system, or that
people should not
use it. Its a personal (or business) decision for what
operating system to
use.
But as part of that decision, one should take into account
that availablilty
of software. If you can get what you want with Linux, that's
great. If
not, then maybe you should look at a platform that DOES
provide it. If
developing flash applications, or visiting Flash-based
websites, is what you
need to be doing, then Linux does not seem the correct
choice.
As an analogy, if you were buying a home entertainment system
that did not
include a provision for a DVD player, and you wanted to play
DVD's, then
your decsion to use that system would not be a good one,
depite how much
better the sound or video quality might be.
Other people (the Linux whingers) do seem to think that,
because they feel
Linux is the best operating system, and that they have chosen
to use it,
that EVERYONE must feel that way, and that all companies
should make their
software for Linux etc etc, and that to no do so is somhow a
bad business
decision and that indicates membership of the secret
anti-linux society that
is headed by Bill Gates etc etc. Really.. people that make
those sort of
claims and complatins are either naive, fanatics, or insecure
in their
decision to use Linux.
> Simply put Linux is a better OS In My Humble and
Educated Opinion
That may well be.
But, again, it is completely irrelevant regarding the
availability of a
Linux version of Flash Player. And certainly irrelevant to
the complaints
that porting to Linux should be trivial and that Adobe are in
some
clandestine arrangement with Microsoft to kill of Linux (or
whatever other
conspiracy theories they seem to have).
If Adobe/Macromedia are wanting to get their Flash platform
onto as many
users computers as possible, then it is sensible to develop
for Windows and
Mac first, and port to less popular (consumer) operating
systems after that.
Especially if they are in the situation of having a codebase
that was not
originally written to be cross-platform (its quite an old
codebase), which
makes porting to other OS non-trivial. Ideally, if Adobe was
starting on
Flash Player completely from scratch, they would certainly
develop it to be
cross-platform from the ground up so porting WOULD then be
trivial. But
that is not the way things are, whinging about it isn't going
to change it.
Anyway .. good luck with Linux, patents etc etc, and I hope
the Flash Player
for Linux platforms works well when finally fully released (I
think its
still in Beta).

  • Flash for linux .tar.gz package is still the old 346 version

i trid to upgrade my flash, so i download the .tar.gz package from http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ , after the file was installed, i loaded a flash video in firefox, and found the version is  11.2.202.346. i also downloaded the rpm package, the version is 356.
i think the .tar.gz package should also be updated and i suggest that the version should be containded in the file name so that it is easy to distinguish.

11.2.202.346 was and is the last version to be developed for Linux. There won't be any more.

  • Adobe drops Flash for Linux, except Chrome

    Hi,
    http://blogs.adobe.com/flashplayer/2012 … linux.html
How long until someone cuts Flash out of Chrome and provides the PPAPI for the other browsers? Or better yet, how long until this awful Flash will be a thing of the past and will be replaced by open concepts like HTML5.
    Alex

No. Companies don't need to change OS for this. They can always use Google Chrome (for Linux). However why should they discontinue providing a standalone plugin. They can provide a standalone plugin which any PPAPI implementing web browser can use (in the future if firefox or webkit based ones support the API). Why restrict it to chrome?
You're right, but i was thinking if half+ of the web is based on flash, there will be tons of linux users (like me) that couldn't see that half+ of the web content or doesn't want to chage their web browser. If linux is a poorly supported flash platform, why invest money on make linux friendly web apps and games?
Besides Mozilla said that they're not interested in support PPAPI right now...

  • How to give the root path in flash for linux os?

    hi all,
This is santhosh, I have a problem with xml path in flash. Iam trying to load some swf files into another swf file, it's woking fine in windows os but when I check this file in linux it is not taking the path which I gave for loading external swf files. So, any help on the same will be grate for me.
    thanks in advance.....

I guess the path you are using is wrong. It works on your mashiene as the src path is available. When you run the app on a server (jspx file) there is no src path as long as you don't include it in your WAR wich you should not do anyway.
If you need to access such data you can create a folder in your webroot folder and the the resources from there as /xml_folder_name or if the xml files shouldn't be visible from the outside put the folder under hte web-inf folder.

  • Flash cs3 or 4 for linux?

i know this subject has come up 80 times before, however
recent news makes me wonder how likely it is that adobe will soon
    release flash for Linux,
news bit 1:adobe donated code to the Mozilla foundation
2:with the recent newcomer silverlight not supporting
Linux-browsers, it seems like adobes best move would be to cater to
true universal support and the growing Linux market
3:dells recent Linux endeavour, should be a sign to adobe
that the market for linux is expanding rapidly on the desktop
4:adobe joins open source development labs
it may be wishful thinking on my part but i think adobe is
    seriously considering this

Hmmm, perhaps they put a *true* minimum spec, and a recommended spec, because when I tried to install CS3 on a computer with 512MB RAM it wouldn't allow the install to go through.
Glad to hear it worked out for you though!

  • Konqueror browser for Linux has an useful CPU limitation feature for websites using Flash content. Can you add such a feature in Firefox?

I have recently found that Konqueror browser for Linux can help user to limit cpu usage while visiting a website using flash technology by changing settings in the Flash section and adjusting the slider from VERY HIGH settings to HIGH and MEDIUM and so on. It actually works, and it does not have a direct impact on the general performance for flash player but it may generate some conflicts if other extensions such as add-blocker or click-to-flash are enabled also.
Maybe you can add a similar setting in Firefox in the browser option section or just as an useful addon or extension.

Sorry for being late with my reply. I've just tested that addon that you mentioned in your post ( https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire.../system-monitor/ ) , it looks like a system monitor and nothing more than that.
As for the memory tip ( about:memory ) I agree that it can be extremely useful for users that have less than 1 gb memory installed on their system. I know very little about computers but I can tell your tip for optimizing memory usage in firefox has merits.
Me, I have another problem with cpu overload in Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera and most of the browsers with flash support enabled. Each and every time time I visit a page that features all sort of adds and gadgets based on flash technology, and each time I try to watch a video online my cpu goes all the way up to 100% and stays there until i finally decide to close the browser.
I am running winxp and also linux on a Dell Optiplex GX260 machine with 2000 MHz cpu, 1024 Mib ram and 128 Mib video card, it is not the best computer in the world but still 2000 MHz should be enough for a limited and uneventful web experience.
It is not as much an issue with the web browser, any browser, the whole problem is caused by funny people claiming to be deeply involved with web development, and promoting flash technology for ages instead of choosing other alternatives, more user friendly. All I am saying is that flash ruined the entire web experience making people to believe that they actually need dual-core cpu and coreduo and deepfreeze cpu and so on which is only partially true.
I always get better results for cpu usage when watching online videos that use media player as default player and not flash player, and my cpu stays below 70% usage which is not much but still it is not 100% usage.
Konqueror offered me a nice surprise, and I was able to limit cpu usage once I moved that slider from Very High setttings for flash player to Medium settings. I got something between 80-90% cpu usage as a result, and I was very pleased to finally see a working solution to my problem at least for linux if not for windows.
The only other browser that I can use for windows only, which handles both flash player and cpu usage well is Kmeleon browser which is a long forgotten project but does offer nice features once you find some plugins that it needs to make it come to life again.

  • Flash 9 for Linux

I installed the Flash 9 for Linux, and it works!
I'm using Firefox. The first time I fire up Firefox, it's at
Flash version 9 and works perfectly. But when I close Firefox, the
next time it drops back to Flash 7. Does anyone know a fix?
Normally I use Flash under WinTel, but I wanted to experiment a
little. It works great, except I have to install it again after I
close the Firefox browser, because the browser always reverts back
    to version 7.
    Thanks.

Okay, I found an answer to my own question. ;-) Download the
Adobe Flash plugin. gunzip/tar it. Instead of running the
installer, just copy flashplayer.xpt to path of
    /opt/firefox/components/ and copy libflashplayer.so to
/opt/firefox/plugins/. Change /opt/ to wherever Firefox is. Perhaps
the error happened due to permissions, or something like that, but
there was no error message; rather it worked the first time, until
you closed and restarted your web browser.

Under windows flash runs so much better, why does Adobe put a plugin for Linux when it is so buggy and crashy?

I checked blabbermouth.net and Flash is working fine for me. I've seen nothing but memory and performance improvements with Flash with every release. I have yet to find a page that didn't recognize Flash 10, but my Flash usage is fairly limited.
I just figured out that Adblock Plus was causing the crashes so I uninstalled it. Flash 10 RC seems pretty good at the moment.

  • Security updates for 11.2 Flash Player for Linux?

When attempting to download an update for 11.2 Flash Player for Linux, I saw the note saying that there would be no new development, but security backfixes would continue to be released. I've seen the security warnings for months on my Linux install in Firefox (which is updated) but there does not seem to be a security patch that would stop these "Allow - Continue Blocking" warnings for Flash Player.
When can we expect these to be completed? Linux users may not comprise a large portion of your user base, but the alternatives are extremely expensive hardware and/or software if you want to use an Apple or Microsoft product.

I chose "Yum for Linux" and the file that was downloaded was:
    adobe-release-x86_64-1.0-1.noarch.rpm
I see now that if I select the "rpm for Other Linux" it downloads the flash-player rpm complete with the version info, so perhaps the Yum version is a wrapper. I assumed that since Fedora (and Redhat/etc) uses yum, that I should download the YUM version... in order for it to take effect, I had to perform the following commands after downloading the above rpm:
    sudo yum remove adobe-release-x86_64-1.0-1.noarch
    sudo yum localinstall adobe-release-x86_64-1.0-1.noarch.rpm
    sudo rpm --import /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-adobe-linux
    sudo yum -y install flash-plugin
That allowed me to get the newer version of Flash player to show (and no longer receive the security warnings) but it seems if I had used the Other for Linux download that I wouldn't have had to take those extra steps. I guess we'll find out when the next security update to flash player is released.
    Thanks,

  • Flash Player 10.2 Projector (debug) for Linux

The links on the flash player 10.2 download page for linux (http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html)
seem to still point to the 10.1 version.  At least, when I download and run those, the 'about' dialog says it is version 10,1,102,64.  Where are the 10.2 flash player links for linux?

If you download the Linux Projector from http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html and execute it, the About dialog states 10.2.152.28
The previous version with the ampersand problem was 10.2.152.27 and I had downloaded it from http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html (which is still there in that page, look for Flash Player 10.2.152.26 (65.9 MB), although it states .26, the Linux projector inside that archive is .27)

  • Not complaining, just asking - date for flash 8 for Linux?

    Hi,
Just wondering if there's a release date/month/year for flash
player 8 for Linux. I'm sure it is incredibly hard to port, blah
blah blah, but in all the software companies I've worked in, I've
had to work to deadlines, and give reasonable estimates. If you
have any vitriolic redneck abuse to add, please do it somewhere
else, I don't want to be associated with you. Thanks :-)
    Love, light and peace,
    Crispibits.

    > Why is this version not ready and available?
Because it is non-trivial to port the player code.
    > 64-bit processors have been out for quite a while, now!
Yes .. and that is why the port is being done .. but it will
    be part of 8.5
(now to be known as Flash Player 9) .. if they ported FP8
    then by the time
    it was ready.
    > The Adobe corporate culture isn't crippling MacroMedia
    products, is it?
It has noting to do with Adobe.. this all happened well
    before Adobe took
    over.
    > This is poor marketing and deficient customer service.
I don't see what it has to do with marketing. Is purely
    technical. And I
don't see that it is poor customer service either. Indeed,
    MM/Adobe are
being quite sensible and responsible about this by making the
    port part of
the new FP9 instead of delaying things for all concerned to
    get out a FP8
port that would then be immediately out of date.
    > Well . . . RealMedia has filled the gap for you!
RealMedia is no where near what Flash does .. its very
    simplistic .. and I
wouldn't trust Real as far as I could throw them (which isn't
    very far).

  • Flash Player 9 for Linux

Could someone at Adobe please update us with what is
happening with Flash Player 9 for Linux? I noticed that other Flex
components have been released for Linux, so obviously there is some
    groundwork to Flash Player 9.

Will alienate? They've already alienated users a long time
ago. That isn't the point, though, because it doesn't matter if
users are alienated, it only matters if the users need flash.
The only thing that could make flash player better is open
source. I don't see why they don't do it. They make money on the
authoring tool, not the player. All of my Linux machines are ppc
and x86_64, no flash there. I also don't have flash on my PDA, a
Palm T|X. If the player was open sourced, people would stop
complaining about how much flash sucks -- because, right now, there
are very serious, legitimate, complaints against it.
Anyway, for now I'm hoping that SVG matures quickly.
Although, I"m sure that once Adobe sees that train coming, they
will extend Flash (dev.) to export SVG movies containing embedded
binary data that can only play with their binary plugin.

  • Adobe flash player - no more updates for linux

    Hey,
I dont know if Im in the right place, but a week ago I discovered that Adobe is not going to provide new version of flash player.
I have the most recent one, Flash Player 11.2 for Linux, but some of my internet apps require 11.5 or higher. Im not a geek and Im still quite a newbie, but I was searching in several forums and all over google and I didnt find any other alternative.
Is there any chance to run these apps on Linux? I know I can switch to Windows but its a really stupid thing. Since Im on Linux I run Windows only for gaming or using Photoshop.
    Thanks for any idea

Didnt know its that easy, thanks
