Flash Frame Sizes in YouTube

Hello There,
I’m back in video after a decade long absence and I’m completely new to YouTube because I’ve been living on a continent that rarely even has Internet.  I’ve got some old footage I need to put on YouTube, but YouTube’s specs are a bit contradictory at times.
Starting from the get go, I have several questions and I hope you can point me in the right direction.  It sounds like an FLV file is what I should go for, so I’ll base my questions on that.  Don’t hesitate to answer between the lines.  And don’t hesitate to tell me to change tracks.
The most clear export I can make from my old Avid editing program is an uncompressed QuickTime movie.  I can’t find anything in the YouTube specs about QuickTime moives.  They don’t say they’re good.  They don’t say they’re bad.  Can I convert to an FLV file and upload to YouTube with good results?
When I export non-HD material from my editing program, what frame size do I export?
When I convert to an FLV file, what size do I re-size to?  Or does YouTube resize whatever I send to them to the right size?
When I convert to an FLV file, what’s a reasonable bitrate for video?  How about audio?
Or do I even need to bother with the above?  In one YouTube information sheet, it sounded like I could just upload a plain old MPEG2 file and YouTube would go from there.  Correct or not?
What’s the benefit of an alpha channel?  It seems like the files get smaller, but I can’t get them to play at all after I’ve ticked alpha.
If anyone needs the information, I’m using Avid Xpress Pro 4.3 and have access to both AVS and TMPG 3 for MPEG conversion.  My computer has plenty of horsepower.
And I'm using CS3 from Adobe.
Thanks beforehand for your help.

Hi There,
I'll mark as answered.  Seems like we're on the right track.
I'll upload a small video as a test.  But I feel a little bit guilty about that, since I'd be taking up YouTube computer space for something that's essentially worthless.
Is there any way to test a video on YouTube before a final submission?
Thanks again for your help.

  • Advice on sequence settings - frame size for VHS video in FCP

    Hello,
I was hoping that I could get some advice on editing and output for video captured from VHS Tapes to ensure the best quality possible.
My current workflow to digitize the VHS tapes is:
VHS signal from JVC S7600u with TBC into ADVC 300 (no de-interlace or other filters set) into a Mac Pro via firewire.  Capture preset in FCP is DV NTSC 48khz.
Once in FCP - the captured VHS video frame size is 720 X 480, Vid rate is 29.97, pixel aspect is NTSC-CCIR 601 and field dominance is lower (even)
    My questions are:
If my final destination is for You Tube sharing , are these the best sequence/ frame size settings or should I convert the sequence frame size to 640 X 480, or should I leave at 720 X 480 while working in FCP and then output to Compressor and select the H264 you tube sharing video setting and change the frame size to 640 X 480?
Should I de- interlace for internet/youtube destination?
    Should I de-interlace for DVD/TV destination?
If I want to burn the finished project to DVD and watch the video on a progressive montitor/ TV screen, what would be the best settings/frame size for that?
If any of you out there have experience with editing vcr/analog video in FCP and have a good workflow to ensure best quality, I would really appreciate  any advice/suggestions.
    Thanks in advance.

Digitize to 720X480 frame size in FCP. In compressor, your YouTube preset will automatically deinterlace and a square pixel aspect ratio. No deinterlacing for DVD.

  • How do you know what frame size to make your movie?

    Hello everyone,
I know this is probably an easy question, but I just need someone to sum it up for me
If I'm going to compress my movie (Shot in 4:3, 720x480) and I want to put it on someone else website... which I don't know there frame size... like youtube, can I just submit any size and their website will fit it for me?
    Does that make sense?
Like I know youtube says you can submit a file size of up to 1 gb, but what frame size should it be? Or do I just make the best looking movie I can from compressor and then just submit?
    Thanks...

Most sites such as YouTube will resize it for you, yes. For specific YouTube encoding, this may be of assistance:

  • Screenshot a frame in a Youtube video?

Sometimes I want to take a screenshot of a certain frame in a Youtube video, so I was looking for a way to take a screenshot of just one frame in the video, not the window, and not a selection, just the frame in its exact size. I was playing around with the key combinations for screen capturing and suddenly I managed to capture just one frame, and it was automatically saved to the desktop as a png file. The sad thing is that I can't remember which exact keys I pressed, and I haven't managed to do it again. I remember that I saw the little camera icon (from Grab utility I guess), and that I clicked the video frame in the Youtube player, and the screenshot was saved to the desktop. I have tried several key combinations since then, but all I have managed to do is either capture the whole browser window or bring up the portion selector. Please anyone, what key combination is it I'm looking for?

    Hi,
You said IPhone 5s down the bottom, is this an issue on your computer or your IPhone?
Im assuming computer, from the key combinations, though I don't think there is a way to capture a specific part of the web-page, unless your browser has a function for that. The easiest alternative I know of would be to use Command + Shift + 4, and then select the relevant area, you can do the same with Grab, but I don't know of a way to capture only youtube, unless it's full screen, in which case, you can capture your entire screen by pressing Command + Shift + 3,

  • Question: PE4 -- missing presets, project settings frame size disabled

Hi -- I'm running PE4 and with YouTube's new widescreen abilities, I want to make some widescreen (16:9) videos, rather than the ol' 4:3 ratio.
However, in the intitial set up when I'm creating a new video, when I attempt to change settings, I discover that all the presets are missing. Using windows explorer, I discover that they are all no longer available. Where did they go?
And by the same token, I can't seem to edit my settings, either. From the edit menu, then preset settings, then general... The frame sizes are disabled and no amount of fiddling with the other settings will enable them.
    Am I missing something obvious?
I also feel that the simplest way of fixing the problem would be for someone running PE4 to create a wide screen video in 16:9 and e-mail me the working files. I should be able to clone that over and over for videos. Just an idea.
    Please help!

You can only change your PROJECT presets when you start a project. You can't change them mid-project.
As for output presets under the Share tab, if you're not finding those, then something is wrong with your installation and you probably need to either uninstall and reinstall (you won't lose any work if you do) or at least do a repair install -- do an installation without removing the program from your system.

  • Export Media- matching frame sizes to codec formats

The short version of this would be "what are the most common settings for compressed video at 720p"?
Reading the suggested settings for youtube and other sites simply leads me to more questions, as the presets from premier that get close to matching these recommendations all seem to have odd framerates and frame sizes...
    The long:
Producers that have me scoring audio to some short bumper intro clips have had me download the quicktimes from vimeo. Revealing the Inspector in quictime, i see the specs on the video files ("Photo- Jpeg" compression format, in what I've been told is 'true 720p resolution' (1280x720), at 59.94 fps). Yet cant seem to find similar export settings as presets in Premiere. I am aware of the very useful function of being able to match master project settings from within the Media, but other people who recieve the preview clips note 'why are these in Photo- Jpeg'?
When I use premier presets that contain 720p res, they are often an odd frame size, which again renders questions from the recipient (why is this 720p at 24drop?) etc. So wondering why the difference between what I recieve and what's available from the same video format preset.
For instance When choosing "Photo- Jpeg" as a preset, the res is indeed 720p, yet the frame is nowhere near 1280x720 (not in front of my rig right now but its something like 900x720). In fact quicktime presets come up with these odd frame sizes as well. The presets Im able to locate so far that hold full-frame HD output settings are branded DV and HDV camera options...meanwhile '720p NTSC' is also in odd frame sizes under presets, not sure what to make of that...maybe I was mistaken in thinking 720p NTSC runs at 59.94?
I understand that Youtube, Vimeo and other sites we may be using have their 'recommended settings' faq pages. However my main concern is whether these are also typical settings for compressed quicktimes that producers may want delivered offline as well? Is there a 'standard' at all?
Read alot of FAQs over the past couple days, but these mainly discuss the options available and how to get to them, not finding alot of info regarding
"when to use export settings and why".so I come to you for your expertise...
Thanks for your patience and your insight folks!

    >  Is there a 'standard' at all?
    No.
Sorry, but that's the simple answer.
    Regarding Photo-JPEG versus H.264:
Photo-JPEG codec in a QuickTime container is rather common for such purposes as stock footage---when the quality really matters, but file size (for bandwidth purposes) has to be considered, too.
H.264 is much more effective at compressing a file, but usually at the expense of some image quality. YouTube---to put it bluntly---doesn't care about the quality of movies the way that a stock footage website does, so YouTube prefers H.264. If you upload a video in a nice, high-quality, perfect file, YouTube will recompress it behind the scenes for playback---so you might as well give it what it wants in the first place so that you at least have some control over how your image is destroyed... er... compressed.
There's some more general information about output formats and codecs in this movie that I made:

  • Canon HF200 - variable output frame sizes???

    Hi There Peeps,
Has anyone had a Canon HF200 put out frame sizes 1920x1080 and 1440x1080 from the same shoot?
Not worded that too well but my client came in with his shots on flash drive and as AVCHD is a native nono in FCP the MTS files were converted to MOV with the Voltaic conversion beastie; MOVs into FCP and ho! ho!; different sizes all over the shop.
    Any one got any thoughts?
    Cheers all

I thought the camera shot 1920 and outputs 1440; what is it with 1440 anyway?
The camera might have a full 1920 sensor, but the FORMAT...the HDV format, the codec, is 1440. It is an anamorphic format. This is one way they compress the footage into a small space. I mean, you are getting HD quality on a DV tape...they are compressing the **** out of it. One way is to make the footage anamorphic rather than full raster.
Was it developed by/for US TV networks to more ably use materiel originated on HD @ 16:9?
No. It was designed by the camera manufacturers when they created their codecs.
The Sony Z7 seems to shoot 1920 and output 1440.
Correct. 1920 sensor, 1440 compression type.
today I converted these to 1920x1080 Prores 422 with Compressor, but now have to render any changes in the timeline
That means you have a sequence/clip compression mis-match. Your sequence settings do not match your clips settings. They need to match exactly in order to bypass rendering immediately. If you have FCP 6 and create a new sequence and drop a new clip into that sequence, FCP will ask if you want the sequence to conform to the clip...click YES. Otherwise, choose an Easy Setup that matches what your footage is, then make a new sequence.
I should go back to the AIC .MOVs I guess but I'm not that thrilled with using the AIC.
I wouldn't. AIC lacks timecode...and is lower quality than HDV, and much lower than ProRes.
I think I am confusing myself with round-tripping sequences to Color in Prores and not getting a good return to FCP.
You need to render as PRO RES first in FCP...by either converting the footag to ProRes, or changing your render settings to ProRes. Render, then SEND TO COLOR.

  • 32-Bit Windows 7 IE8/9 Flash Player Size issue.

I have a 24inch 1920x1080 monitor. I want to read the text on the screen but at the IE defualt of 100% it gets very tideous trying to read the wrighting and its the same with Adobe Flash player it becomes ridiculously small. I like to have my browser at 150% everything fits the screen better you dont have these giant borders on either side of what you are looking at and you can read the wrighting easier, but here comes the problem adobe flash player video (minus youtube videos) stays the same size as if I was still at 100% and doesn't fill the flash player margains. id expect the video to enlarge with the browser? No?
Before you ask ive turned off hardware acceleration and that did not work.

    Thanks for the reply.

I should have made that more clear. I went to Control Panel -> Uninstall a program and then removed it there. After that, the folder was still there in the system32 directory so I renamed it to be safe that the old is not being used. Then I went to Adobe.com and installed the flash player through the browser with their download manager.

  • Frame size doesn't match

I'm working on an animated project...doing the animation in Flash and then doing various effects and editing in Premiere Pro CS3.  I've been rendering my scenes out of flash as PNG sequences, and then bringing them into Premiere...and so far it seems to be working well for picture quality and what not, but I just noticed something weird.  I'm rendering frames from Flash with 1280x720 resolution...and in Premiere I'm working with a project size of 1280x720, so it should be a perfect fit, right?  But it doesn't seem to be.  If I render an image sequence from Premiere, the dimensions are fine, but if I render a video file it stretches the picture out horizontally for some reason, and also crops the left and right edges.  I also noticed that in Premiere if I choose 'scale to fit frame size' in the timeline than the image shrinks a bit and leaves a very narrow letterbox at the top and bottom...this solves the cropping issue when I export but the image is still inexplicable stretched...not to mention that if the clip size has the exact same dimensions as the frame size, 'scale to fit frame size' really shouldn't do anything at all.
Anybody know what's going on here?  At the moment it doesn't have a big impact on my project but when I finish and want to render out watchable video it's gonna be a problem, so I might as well figure it out now before I go any further.
    thanks in advance

Ya, all my footage is the same size, I actually made a template file that I open and resave whenever I start a new scene so that all my settings would
be consistant...and my project settings match my export settings.  The monitor in Premiere shows it cropped as well, but it doesn't get stretched until I export it...and then like I said if I export a targa sequence or something it's not stretched or cropped.
I'm not sure what you mean by par, thought.

  • Changing Photo Album Frame Size

I am having my first attempt at designing our business web page with IWEB. In reference to the My Albums Index page, the frame styles all seem to only suit landscape style photos. All our photos are portrait layout, and so they appear within the album frame with the top and bottom missing. I cannot see how to change this, without changing the photo format, which I would rather not do. Please help.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I don't know how to change the frame size in the album layout but you might consider using either SimpleViewer for Flash Album Exporter plugins for iPhoto which create flash based slideshows/galleries. This demo page has some examples of them. They appear to handle portrait oriented photos well. Instructions on how to embed them in an iWeb page is included.
There is one portrait oriented photo in each example.

  • How to apply "scale to frame size" to a bunch of stills in CS4 and most likely all PP pro.

Hello, I was looking for an answer to this procedure after trying to use the "paste attribute" function; that is ticking this option on one picture, and pasting (as attribute) it to the rest of the stills. As this did not work I finally found a Youtube video showing how simple (and embarrassing) it was. -  Just highlight all your stills on the timeline and right click anywhere on the selected area. Then click on the "scale to frame size" to put a tick against it. NB In my case though a few things happened when I tried, and one I remember was that my selection had already a still with the tick against the "resize..." (as I tried and erred various other ways) so it would not work, I guess because the program already could see the tick although it's only on one still. Most likely if I hadn't learned the "paste attribute" method I would have chosen this but here you are as an erratic user I opted for the less obvious possible method!  I hope this entry will help people who want a quick answer  to this situation. I'm a little surprised though as I thought I read somewhere that PP as "scale to frame size" as a default!

Yes that's right Bill, I think that's what the video did show and that I tried to share in "my discussion" But Ann explained to me how to turn it on as a default from Preference which is a smarter way to go about it, providing it's done before importing the pictures in the project window. Else, yes that the way to do it!
Actually it would be nice to be able to choose the size of the frame so to fit it directly into the safe area which ever is chosen, it would cut a couple of steps when animating the still, avoiding scaling into the safe area (I'm a dreamer!)

  • MiniDV: frame size problem?!!

    Hi guys
    The case:
When I capture from MiniDV the captured footages come in 720 x 576 frame size, while the sequence I am using is 1440 x 1080 and sometimes full HD 1920 x 1080. My final video is the same size of my sequence. What I do right now to overcome the frame size differences problem is to scale my footage to frame size of the sequence, but that results in low quality of my final production.
    The questions:
Q1: Is it possible to directly capture footages from MiniDV at frame size of 1440 x 1080 or 1920 x 1080?
Q2: Is it possible to change the frame size of 720 x 576 to 1440 x 1080 or 1920 x 1080 without having to scarify quality?
Q3: if none of the above is possible then what should I do to solve this problem?

not very good quality at that because the compression system used (the "codec") is not very efficient and therefore the quality of video you get saved to the tape isn't good.
That's quite debatable.  The quality of DV compression is equal or even superior to standard definition Betacam SP, which was a broadcast industry standard.
Newer camcorders ( A few years ago ) dropped the miniDV compression mechanism and changed to miniHDV (which is actually MPEG4 part 10 aka AVCHD aka H.264) and record on the same "miniDV" tape at the same bitrate but because the compression is better it's possible to record HD on that older miniDV tape technology.
More than a few errors there.  For starters, the HD format is called HDV, nothing "mini" in the name.  Such cameras do use MiniDV tapes, but the format itself is called simply HDV.  Further, HDV is an MPEG 2 compression scheme, not MPEG4.  Further, the compression is very, very lossy, thus resulting in a image actually worse than DV in some ways, with many artifacts and a lesser color space.  It's because so much more of the data is simply thrown out that you can fit the HD signal into the same SD data rate.  And finally, AVCHD is the name of the MPEG4 standard, but there are no cameras that record AVCHD to tape.  They all use internal hard drives or some type of flash card like SDHC.
Finally, you can use something like InstantHD to uprez normal DV footage into HD.  I can't speak for the results, bot ideally it would be better to be shooting in HD form the start.

  • Reduced frame size results in increased file size (?!)

    Hello
I am trying to decrease the resolution of my HDV video to a smaller size, to put in on Viddler. The format there apparently is width="437" height="370".
I exported from FinalCut into a QuickTime file, the file size is 485MB.
Then I used QuickTIme Pro to change the movie into the above frame size, and add a letter box.
The resulting file is over 6GB in files size! How can this be? I used no compression and these settings: no compression, millions of colours, Best Quality, Apple Lossless sound, 48.000MHz, Mono.
The reason for not compressing is that Viddler will compress on its servers (into Flash).
Any hints? I must stay under 500MB to upload the file to Viddler.

I am trying to decrease the resolution of my HDV video to a smaller size, to put in on Viddler. The format there apparently is width="437" height="370".
According to a Viddler "staff" member on their forum, the player is 545x408. Therefore I would try one of the following:
544x408 (4:3 aspect) 544x306 (16:9 aspect) (closest match disregarding macro blocks)
    512x384 (4:3 aspect) 512x288 (16:9 aspect) (long file up-scaling macro-blocked)
    576x432 (4:3 aspect) 576x324 (16:9 aspect) (short file down-scaling macro-blocked)
To me, a "QuickTime file" is anything you can stuff into an MOV file container, or a more loose definition, anything compatible with the QT Player and currently installed QT components. With regard to going from 485 MBs to 6 GBs, your file size is directly related to the total (audio + video) data rate used for compression. Not compressing a video makes it bigger while the higher the compression, the smaller the file.
The reason for not compressing is that Viddler will compress on its servers (into Flash). Any hints? I must stay under 500MB to upload the file to Viddler.
Since the target for the Flash target conversion is 448 kbps (400 kbps video + 48 kbps audio), the same staff member recommended H.264 multi-pass video compression at 768 kbps and AAC mono audio compression at 64 kbps with a sampling rate of 44.1 kHz. Splitting the difference between the staff recommendation and your apparent worry about quality loss during re-compression, I would suggest this as a maximum level of compression and likely try a total data rate in the 1500-1600 kbps range which should yield something on the order of 12.25 MBs/min for output for initial tests. You can, of course adjust rates up or down depending on the duration of your file upload in order to meet the 500 MB limit and satisfy quality considerations.

  • Videos are downloaded at small frame size

    Sir/Madam,
I downloaded some videos from youtube. I have "Download Helper" and "Best Video Downloader" add ons installed. Any video that i download is downloaded at very small frame size like a little box. I don't mean a specific video , the problem is with any video that i download. I tried both of them. I informed them about this but no response is given by them. Is this a browser issue? (This problem is occurring from 2 days.)

    Not a Firefox issue
    Open Windows Media Player
    * go to View Menu -> Video Size -> place Checkmarks on -> '''Fit Video to Player on Resize''' -> '''Fit Player to Video on Start'''
    * Restart Windows Media Player
Check and tell if its working.

The "restore disk" is built into the Mac. See About Recovery.
Need more specifics about what error messages you got while installing Adobe Flash.
However, you can almost avoid Flash altogether by setting YouTube to play the HTML5 version instead.
Click the Try something new! link at the bottom of the YouTube page.
I don't know about the sound issue. Might be hardware as you think. Try other headphones to check.
