Need Detailed description of the differences between Adobe Flash Player Plugin and Shockwave Flash
For many years now I have been in a quandry over Adobe Flash (plugin) and Shockwave flash. The quandry is also somewhat exacerbated by the variety of subsetted versions supplied for each.
You know, it is sorta like the name and namespace dilemna provided by Adobe's continuing use of "Macromedia" when sometimes referring to, or distributing, their products... eg still creating Macromedia folders during installs.
I have been told that Shockwave Flash actually contains the Flash plugins. If that is the case should I be upgrading to a newer Shockwave Flash version if Adobe announces or (as recently occurred) denounces
a newer version of Adobe Flash.
Will you please provide me with details for, and distinctions between, these two products?
Hoping you can respond in a flash ... er... two flashes.
ThanksOK Thanks I silly-goofed in describing what I meant in my initial post. I needed to say what's the diff between Adobe Flash (=Shockwave Flash) (plugin) and Adobe Shockwave Player.
So will you please detail the differences between Adobe Flash (=Shockwave Flash) and Shockwave Player?
I have been told that Shockwave Player actually contains the Adobe Flash (=Shockwave Flash) plugins. Is it both
Flash Player ActiveX control for Internet Explorer
Flash Player plugin for all other browsers
that are contained therein?
If the above is indeed the case, should I be upgrading to a newer Shockwave Player version if Adobe announces or (as recently occurred) denounces a newer version of Adobe Flash (=Shockwave Flash) .
Here's where I am headed will all this:
I have been asked by one of your coworkers Chris Campbell, to prepare an Adobe Bug report and paste back to the Adobe Forum thread:
http://forums.adobe.com/message/4428382#4428382
Since I have Adobe Shockwave Player 11.6.4.634 and Adobe Flash (aka Adobe Shockwave Flash) ver 11,1,102,55 currently installed and since
Adobe Flash 11.2.202.235 will not install without a "...The procedure entry point ... kernel32.dll ..." error for my Windows 2000 Professional configuration
I want to uninstall Adobe Flash (=Shockwave Flash) ver 11,1,102,55 and the then further troubleshoot the MLB.TV media player "abnormal spinning circles" problem.
Will the MLB NexDef detector actually detect the "Flash version inside Shockwave player"? Will the MLB.TV NexDef software actually work nicely with Shockwave Player Flash? -
continous errors about "shockwave flash", "script has stopped working" etc, causing numerous slowdowns, lock-ups, and crashes. have tried several fixes, but none have worked.....please advise
Is it a permissions problem? Here's another way.
(1) In a My Computer or Windows Explorer window, open this folder:
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash
If that folder does not exist, then you are using 32-bit Windows, and you can open the following folder instead:
C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash
''(Note: This folder exists on both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows, but on 64-bit Windows Firefox uses the Flash player in the SysWOW64 folder instead.)''
(2) Check for a file named mms.cfg:
(A) ''If mms.cfg exists,'' drag it to your '''Documents folder''' where you can edit it without being bothered about administrator privileges
(B) ''If mms.cfg does not exist,'' open your '''Documents folder''', right-click > New > Text File and name the new file mms.cfg
(3) Open mms.cfg from Documents into a text editor such as Notepad. Add this on its own line (I put it last):
ProtectedMode=0
Save the file and close Notepad.
(4) Hold down the Ctrl key and drag the mms.cfg file back to the Flash folder to make a copy there, keeping the original in Documents
This change should take effect the next time you restart Firefox.
Hopefully that works around the permission issue. -
Flash causes us all immense confusion, and Firefox is adding to the problem.
My Firefox Add-ons page lists (under Plugins -- isn't there a difference?) that I have:
Shockwave Flash 12.0.0.70 which is set to "Always Activate".
Adobe websites list:
Adobe Flash Player 12.0.0.70
Adobe Shockwave Player 12.0.9.149
-- so what on earth is the Firefox-listed "Shockwave Flash"?
This simply adds to the utter confusion already surrounding Flash Player -- which I cannot find anywhere amongst my Programs -- but which I can find under "Uninstall or change a Program" where it is listed as "Adobe Flash Player 12 Plugin".
There is also the thorny issue of FlashPlayer vs. FlashPlayerDownloader......
I need a flash of inspiration to get me out of shock -- I'm not waving, I'm drowning! In the internals of the plugin it is still referenced as Shockwave Flash. That hasn't changed as it would break websites that check for a specific plugin name. You can see that on the about:plugins page and in the properties of the Flash plugins file.
You can open the Web Console (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer) and paste this JavaScript code in the command line to see how the Adobe Flash Player plugin identifies itself:
<pre><nowiki>console.log(navigator.plugins["Shockwave Flash"].name);
console.log(navigator.plugins["Shockwave Flash"].description);
</nowiki></pre>
*https://developer.mozilla.org/Tools/Web_Console
On disk you will also see Macromedia for folder names used by the plugin.
*32 bit Windows: C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash\
*64 bit Windows: C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash\
* C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Macromedia\Flash Player\ -
Quite recently I've been having the following message of varying URL's informing me of Unresponsive Scripts. Also, I've started to have problems with viewing videos at YouTube and slowness. Can you advice me?
Below you will see a list of things I saw on my Add-on's and updates. I'm not sure why I have some of the *Unknown* Add-on's. Can you tell me? I wasn't aware of them before and certainly don't remember downloading any add-ons to my computer.
I have these two JAVA's installed in my computer I don't know what they are for and whether I need them both or at all. Can you advice?

This is an example of the *unresponsive script* messages I seem to getting alot of recently:
"A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

Shockwave Flash was recently updated (see below) so can't understand why I'm now getting these messages. Please help me. Tell me how to make my computer get back to it's 'normal no problem self'
I wasn't having any issues until quite recently. What was the changes that prompted this.

Flash Player dosn't work in IE 11 even shockwave flash object is activated
Hello,
Flash Player dosn't work in IE 11 even shockwave flash object is activated.
I've installed Adobe Flash Player Version 16.0.0.287 (today).
then
I checked on this page:
http://helpx.adobe.com/de/flash-player.html
says Flash Player not installed or not activated
Active X Version 16.0.0.287
Internet Explorer 11
Win 7 SP1 32 Bit
Please help me.
Thank you in advance
PaulFirst, confirm that ActiveX Filtering is configured to allow Flash content:
https://forums.adobe.com/thread/867968
Internet Explorer 11 introduces a number of changes both to how the browser identifies itself to remote web servers, and to how it processes JavaScript intended to target behaviors specific to Internet Explorer. Unfortunately, this means that content on some sites will be broken until the content provider changes their site to conform to the new development approach required by modern versions of IE.
You can try to work around these issues by using Compatibility View:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/use-compatibility-view#ie=ie-11
If that is too inconvenient, using Google Chrome may be a preferable alternative. -
I am SOOOOOO sick of this issue. I have posted asking for help, advice and etc... in many different sites including THIS ONE, and no one seems to know how to fix this. For about the last month or so, I have had a problem with my adobe flash, or shockwave flash or what ever the hell you want to call it. I say this last part because I have been told they are the same, and I have been told they are different. Here is a screen shot of the damn pop up box I keep getting, it also shows how I am also often told that I need to install adobe flash to view something even though I DO have it installed already.
The issue: It seems like every couple of mins at times, my browser will freeze, then after a few seconds to mins, I get the above shown pop up box about my unresponsive plugin. Usually when I click the continue button, after a few mins the page continues to work. This usually only lasts a few mins before it freezes again and I get the pop up box AGAIN. Sometimes it stays unfrozen for a while, and I have no issues but this is very rare. Now if I click the stop plugin option, this usually makes adobe flash crash altogether, and I have to refresh everything. Sometimes my page does not unfreeze at all, even after clicking the continue button, my browser does not unfreeze, and I have to open my task manager, and shut it all down manually. As for the other issue, where I am told I have to download adobe flash to view something, this does not happen EVERY time I try viewing something, but it does happen, I would say maybe 2-8 times out of 10 it happens. It has happened while trying to view videos, commercials I get while playing games sometimes, or many other things, I am saying this because I want to make sure you understand it is NOT just when I am on facebook or something, I just happened to take the screenshot above while on FB when it happened this most recent time to make this post here with.
Ok so I have tried a LOT of things to fix this. I more then once tried uninstalling and then reinstalling adobe flash, I did so following the instructions for a CLEAN INSTALL as I was directed by someone else to try. In case the issue was something to do with my anti virus, or fire wall or etc... I have also tried uninstalling, then reinstalling while my windows firewall was turned OFF, as well as my anti virus turned off. I have tried uninstalling my browsers as well, then reinstalling them AFTER reinstalling adobe.
According to the flash checker thing on the adobe site itself, I DO have the most current version installed, I also checked the page to see if it was supposed to be working properly, and according to your site it said my adobe flash WAS working fine, the images and etc... displayed fine. All of my browsers and etc... are also ALL up to date. I have made sure that ALL of my adobe products are up to date, the reader, active x, shockwave, etc...
I have tried everything and yet I still keep getting this message box, and often enough I get the message saying adobe needs to be installed to view something. I had not installed anything, nor had I made any changes to my comp or system prior to this problem starting, though if I am not mistaken, I think I HAD just upgraded to the newest version OF adobe at the time, this was over a month ago now...
I also want to add, so that I don't start getting suggestions to do so... I do not have a virus on my comp. I have checked and rechecked my system using a few different programs like windows defender, malwarebytes, my anti virus Avast!, Spybot Search & Destroy, Microsoft Safety Scanner and possibly other ones as well, and none of them have ever found any malware, adware, or viruses.
As for my system and info: I mostly use firefox (yes most recent version), however recently I did download and try using Google Chrome in order to find out if this was a firefox issue or something, as someone suggested once. I encountered the SAME pop up box, and message while using Google Chrome, as well as while using IE, which tells me even more this is not a "browser" problem, but more an adobe/shockwave/flash or whatever problem. I have windows 7 home premium on my comp, it is the 64-bit operating system. The site will NOT let me post in the "flash player" forum. When I open the list of forums to post in, I see flash player listed, but it is grey in color and you can not click on it. Under the scroll box that gives you the choices of forums to post your question in you see this:
"Why are some locations grayed out? This means that you can view content in these locations, but may not have access to post to them. Or, the content type you've chosen is not available there (i.e. trying to put a blog post in a project where blogs are turned off). Also to move content to "Your documents", "Private discussions" or "Your Videos" you have to be the author."
So tell me HOW the hell am I supposed to post in that forum, when it is not letting me? I have had this problem since back in April, I have tried posting to get help and all I get is complaints I posted in the wrong place, and it is the SITE that is not letting me post in the right place. -
How do I set my default Shockwave Flash object viewer to Firefox 4 RC?
In the previous version of Firefox, I set it as my default Shockwave Flash viewer (these were offline objects) by selection the application in my program files.
When I upgraded to FF 4 RC, I was no longer able to view these files, nor was I able to find the application to default to (it was no longer in program files).
I tried setting the default viewer to the FF application located in Local Roaming but it won't appear in either the 'recommended' or 'other' when selected.
I can however still view these SWFs by clicking and dragging them onto the FF window. This isn't a major issue but I'd like to know if and how this can be fixed.
Thanks# Open Windows Explorer.
# Right-click a Shockwave Flash file (.SWF) and select '''Open with''' then '''Choose default program...'''
# Click the '''Browse''' button in the lower right corner of the window and choose the Firefox executable. If you've installed Firefox in the default location, its path is ''C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe'' -
For the past couple of weeks I've been having this issue. Everything works fine all morning, and then mid-afternoon, Mozilla goes haywire and I get an "unresponsive plugin" error message, telling me Shockwave Flash "has stopped responding". It derails my entire computer system, everything ends up "not responding" (every single window, tab, program, even pictures and Word documents) then after I spend half an hour moving at the speed of molasses to save, close, and restart things, then it continues working just fine for the rest of the evening. It ONLY happens around 1 to 3 pm.
It's aggravating to say the least. And I can't figure out why. Everything I have from Adobe is up to date, all of my plugins in general are up to date, and I've been using the same exact websites for work for years but this has only cropped up recently.
Any ideas? Should I just take a long lunch and avoid my computer from 1 to 3?
PS: I'm the only person home, and my wifi requires a password, so it's my internet service fighting a crowd or anything.I'm not paying for Norton for the toolbar, I like the Internet Security options in general.
It has this "Vault" that stores all your website passwords, and "Identity Cards" to store financial information, addresses, etc. I feel safer having this information stored in Norton (which I gave the most unique and secure password I could think of) rather than storing these details on individual websites.
Heaven forbid anyone ever steal my computer, they won't be able to access ANYTHING unless they can hack into Norton, which is the only password I hand-type. Before I got it, I used to have Firefox save it for me, but there was no security in that. Anybody could open up, say, Amazon.com, and log right into my account, and instantly have access to my credit card and change the mailing address. Using Norton Internet Security, they can't get into any of my accounts (shopping, banking, email, etc), and even if they do, they won't find any sensitive info available.
As for Firefox 22, I just clicked "update" the other day (before then canceling) because it specifically said the plugin wasn't available, and I need it for the options I just mentioned. The next time it prompts me, I'll look again and see if it's ready yet. -
Shockwave flash constant crashing
Since updating from firefox 26, I have experienced constant shockwave flash hangs in both Firefox and Chrome. I have done numerous rollbacks, uninstalls, clean reinstalls, and driver updates. Anything that fixes the issue only fixes it for a few hours then it goes back to crashing.
My system is a Lenovo w520 with intel Core i7 2760 running Windows 7 Pro x64 SP1. The graphics setup uses NVIDIA optimus to split between the Intel HD graphics and the NVIDIA Quadro 1000M. Both have the most recent drivers, updating them did not fix the issue.
I have tried disabling hardware acceleration, but no dice. It is extremely difficult to get to flash player settings because browser hangs as soon as anything with flash tries to load. Clicking stop plugin does not fix the hang, so I generally have to kill the browser from the task manager. It has become totally unusable.
Virus infection was the first obvious thought, but multiple full scans by MS Security Essentials and Malwarebytes with windows in safe mode and in full mode find no viruses. I have disabled all addons and extensions besides flash, and the problem persists. I finally just uninstalled flash and tried to run everything in HTML5, but now videos only play sporadically. After a Windows restart, a video or two will play, then once firefox is closed, they no longer play.
I forgot to add that flash also hung in Spotify (the program, not the web interface) when it tried to show an ad.
I have also tried running flash in protected mode and out of protected mode, no change in the constant hangs.
Here are some of the crash reports from my system:

I didn't put the two together until you said it was an audio server connection and I realized I had installed a global equalizer a few days before this problem started, so I got rid of that. I reinstalled flash after fixing the sound driver issue, and all is well at the moment, but I've had many false positives. I'll report back in tomorrow and let you know if it worked.

In Firefox 4, how do I change the order of plugins on the Add-ons Plugins manager page? I turn Shockwave Flash on only when I want to watch a video and then turn it off to prevent screen freezing, and so I want it to PUT it and KEEP it at the top of the list.
Hit Ctrl+0 (That's a zero, by the way). I'm not sure if it will work, but hey, that's the first thing I would try.

Shockwave Flash Keeps Coming Up With A Window That Has A Unresponsive Plugin?
The Shockwave Flash window keeps coming up when I am on the Internet. Most of the time. It says Warning: Unresponsive Plugin. Shockwave Flash may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the plugin now, or you can continue to see if the plugin will complete. I need help fixing this issue. I am using Firefox also. Let me know how to resolve this issue. I appreciate it. Thanks.

Change aspect ratio in Shockwave Flash
I am trying to watch a streaming TV channel in Shockwave Flash. The person initiating the streaming is using an incorrect aspect ratio that distorts the image. He is putting a 3:2 image in the HD 16:9 screen, which means that the image is 18.5% too wide. People appear too fat, for example. I have tried to get him to correct the problem, but it appears he is unwilling to do it or unable to see the problem or doesn't know how to fix it. His site has the code that I can use to embed the image in a web page of my own, with the "object" and "embed" html tags, and I thought that perhaps I could resize the dimensions to be correct at my end. I've looked at the attributes for the Shockwave Flash and it appears that there should be one called "scale" and it appeared to me that if I chose "exactfit", I could lose his incorrect aspect ratio. However, I have been unsuccessful in making this work. If I make the horizontal:vertical dimension 3:2 as is really the case with his image, black bands appear at the top and bottom and I still get his distorted image stretched too wide horizontally.
So -- question: Is it possible for me to lose his incorrect aspect ratio by doing something at my recieving end? -- or, am I stuck with the distorted image he is sending? Or, could I use some other Flash product, like the Flash Media Encoder, to do it?Shockwave Flash is Flash Player, not Shockwave Player.

Shockwave flash plug in crashes in every browser on my mac
I have been posting about this problem on the Apple forums and think that the problem is the flash player.
After a recent Apple security update, I am unable to play the game "Serpentine" on games.cobradragon.com. The game is a free boggle like game, a very simple platform that isn't heavy on graphics or anything. But for some reason, I cannot play the game on any of my browsers. They are all up to date and the Adobe Flash player is the most recent version : 11.2.202.235
My OX is OSX 10.6.8
I know this is related to the Apple security update from around May 14 because I haven't yet updated my MacBook with that Apple update and am not having any problems playing the game on my Macbook's browsers.
I have gone through all of the steps on the Adobe website that it suggested to get Flash to work properly but I still get the error message: "The following plug in has crashed: Shockwave Flash."
I haven't noticed any problems on high media content sites like Facebook or Youtube, it seems to only create a problem on the one game site that I use. As I said, the game site is a simple boggle game, no big adverts, etc. It is free to register and play there if anyone here wants to try it on their iMac with the latest Apple security update and see if their browser gets the same error.
Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.
I'm not sure that Adobe can do anything about this because it seems like it's an Apple security thing. I'm not a complete technical moron but I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination.
Thanks.I gave this a try on my 10.6.8 test system but was unable to reproduce the crash. When the plugin crashes, do you receive a crash log report? If so, could you paste the contents in a reply?
Thanks,
Chris
