Flashing Folder when booting in Mac now

Okay, i tried Bootcamp with windows on my MacPro on a separate internal HD.
so I have 2 HDD, one for mac and one for Windows.
since then, i removed the Windows HDD and back to 2 Mac HDDs.
When I boot, i get a blank gray screen with Flashing Folder.... then I have to shut it down and boot again while holding down the OPTION key to boot into Bootcamp menu, the only choice i have is "Macintosh HD" and select it it will boot just fine.
I have tried to set it in Starup Disk System Preferences to Mac but whenever I shut it down, it will not start up unless I do the OPTION key and select mac.
What can I do? it's annoying and I want it to boot back in Mac all the time.

HI Jeff,
If your profile is correct, 10.5.2, try downloading and installing the 10.5.6 combo update available here.http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10-5-6_ComboUpdate It can fix a myriad of issues. Make sure and repair disk permissions before and after. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select FirstAid, then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot.

  • HT1310 MacBook Pro gets a Question inside a Folder when booting up

My MacBook Pro Mid-2010 gets a Question Mark inside a folder when booting up. I've tried using Startup Manager for a Time Machine Restore from a LaCie External HD. Any ideas??

You need to use a Mac OS X DVD to restore the backups; Time Machine backups made by Mac OS X versions prior to 10.8 aren't bootable prior to restoration.

i have the flashing folder when i start up my power book, i have no idea how to fix it

    Hi morales2k,
Here is a link for a relatively cheap OS  that would be compatible with your Mac. Its a little old but will get you back on track. This is OS X 10.3
    http://www.amazon.com/Mac-10-3-Panther-OLD-VERSION/dp/B0000E6NK9/ref=sr_1_1?ie=U TF8&qid=1384575314&sr=8-1&keywords=os+x+10.3
This is a newer version of OS X (10.4 Tiger). Its more expensive, but will get more updates than Panther...
    http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Mac-10-4-Tiger-VERSION/dp/B0002G71T0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=U TF8&qid=1384575391&sr=8-1&keywords=os+x+10.4
This is the highest OS that the PowerBook can run, and is more expensive. The biggest advantage of this OS (Leopard) is that it will get the most updates available for PowerPc Macs...
    http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Version-10-5-6-Leopard-VERSION/dp/B000FK88JK/ref=sr_ 1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1384575583&sr=8-3&keywords=os+x+10.5
Any of these will get your Mac back to normal operation. Just insert the CD/DVD and follow the on screen instructions!
    Good Luck!

  • Flashing folder when starting up ??

Anyone know how I can remedy the flashing folder when I start up my mini? I have a ministack and if I restart it boots normally with the grey apple. When I turn on the Mini I get the flashing folder and don't boot. Show a Folder logo with "?" . I don't have that problem with my other drives.
    How do I fix this?

Two possible scenarios. Don't overreact, and read both to find out which one is best:
    1. If you are getting a flashing ? folder that won't quit flashing ? folder, in some cases booting with the Option key is necessary:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106178
You need to use the operating system that is installed or a newer retail operating system disk to examine the disk. I'd only do this on a system that is backed up, and following the instructions in my FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
    2. If it quits the Flashing ? Folder and goes to the desktop without issue, then you don't have anything to worry about, but you should backup your data in anycase as my FAQ* explains:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
The Startup Disk will simply need to be reset in Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Startup Disk so it won't flashing ? folder on the next restart.
Do you need a translation? Or do you understand what I am saying?

  • Failed boot with flashing folder, but boots from USB

    Hi,
I was recently running an app from the App Store, when my computer froze. I got the classic spinning beach ball on the app, so went to the dock to ctrl-click the dock application icon to force quit it. This then crashed my dock. After some time I gave up, and force-turned my MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2009) off by pressing and holding the power button.
I turned my mac on again, booted to a gray screen, then 30 seconds later a folder with a question mark in it began flashing on the screen.
    My Mac did not progress further in its boot. So I did all the usual stuff;
I re-installed my RAM and HDD (both of which I have upgraded a little while ago to improve specs) and tried to boot again without success.
I tried to access the recovery partition by holding alt while booting, to no avail, doing so just left me with a grey screen and a mouse pointer displayed. I believe that this may have been the case because I boot from an encrypted hard drive (I have encrypted it using filevault) and I have heard that recovery mode is inaccessible when booting from an encrypted drive.
    I zapped my PRAM. (cmd-alt-P-R)
I tried booting into safe mode. (⇧)
Nothing worked. I then, as a last resort, removed the HD from my MacBook Pro, and swapped it with the non-encrypted drive that I use to back up menial data. I tried booting from the unencrypted drive into recovery mode, and it didn't work.
However this is the interesting bit. I then tried to boot (via USB) from the encrypted (original) HD that I had put in my external enclosure. This works. I logged in (past the encryption) and can now use my computer as normal.
I would therefore think that my Mac has something wrong with the HD bridge, or the HD cable inside my Mac. However, I can now read from and right to the unencrypted HD that I installed in my mac!? Very Wierd!?
If anyone has any ideas about what may be going on, I would be very gratefull, as I can now only boot my Mac via USB, which is a hastle to say the least. I include a screenshot.
    Thanks so much!!
    Mr BlobE

In this case sig the interesting thing is that the computer boots when the Startup Disk is connected via USB. In other words, my laptop will read and write, but not boot from the internal drive. Thanks Linc Davis, I have done just that and should hopefully have a working mac by tomorrow!

  • My macbook air has a flashing folder when start up, I just got it back from apple with a new hardrive.

I just got my macbook air back from apple because my hard drive failed,
Now that I have finally got it back I get a flashing folder and when I boot up to the disk utlities it doesn't let me choose a disk and it doesn't provide one to reset the OSX,
This is the worst experience I have EVER had with Apple and I need help.

  • I get the flashing folder on booting my MacBook, but only if it is not connected to a power source.

I have an early 2008 white MacBook, running Snow Leopard.  A few months ago the hard disk died, and I replaced it.  Now when I turn it on (or even wake it from sleep) I get the grey screen with the flashing folder/question mark.  However, when it is connected to a power source, this doesn't happen. (this is not dependent on battery as when unplugged, it doesn't start even if the battery is full)
I was hoping for advice on what the problem might be, and how I can sort it to use without being plugged in.
    Thanks

Once a Mac becomes 4 years old, the PRAM chip's capacitor or battery is likely to go.     This is separate from the battery to affects it on the power lines.   Hopefully yours is a battery, since the capacitor is on the logicboard for those that have a capacitor, and are harder to replace.

  • Cannot install Leopard! after getting flashing folder icon @ boot-up

Hi, I have a retail version of leopard but not having any luck installing it.
While installing I choose to erase and install option, when it started to install it comes up with a error "The source media you are installing from is damaged. Try istalling from a different copy of the source media or contact the manufacturer for a replacment".
Now when I boot up to try it again, it comes up with a flashing folder error, with ? mark in it.
I have resetted the pram and restored drive but no luck. Any help?

How long into the install process (after you clicked install and it started installing) until you received the error?
    * If it had already formatted the hard drive, then the reason you're not able to boot is because all of your previous operating system and data were erased already and you're s@#t up a creek and will have to contact Apple, tell them the steps you took, and request a new Leopard disk.
    * If it simply checked the Leopard DVD and it hadn't formatted the drive or started installing, then booting off your original OSX disk (or the disk of the previous operating system you had on there) and going to "Disk Utility > First Aid > verify Disk" will tell you what the issue is. If it has errors, then try using "Repair Disk". If it fails, you're s@#t up a creek and will have to contact Apple, tell them the steps you took, and request a new Leopard disk.
    Good Luck!

  • Flashing Folder when USB device plugged into 3rd USB port

    Model: Intel iMac, 2008, 2GB
Problem: Anytime I plug in any USB device into the third USB port from the left, next to the firewire port, I get a flashing folder.
If I boot into an install disc, it does not recognize or see the hard drive.
If I unplug the device from that specific port, the computer will boot and run fine.
I managed to zero out the hard drive and reinstall Leopard. I have reset PRAM and all that.

So if you plug in, say a printer, scanner, mouse or keyboard does it act the same?
The flashing folder tells you that the Mac cannot find a bootable OSX device (volume).
You stated in the original post "I have reset PRAM and all that"
Is resetting SMC included in the "everything like that" category? If you have not tried resetting the SMC then do that.

  • Many Problems: Flashing Folder at Boot and Can't get drives to boot dvds

another flashing folder post....i've looked thru many of them but can't seem to find a fix for my problem.
I just got a powerbook g4 15" 1.25ghz from a friend. it didn't have the factory discs but i had a copy of 10.4.6 from an old ebay purchase. i tried to load it (holding down c at start) i get a blank grey screen for a sec or 2 then it goes to the flashing folder (face finder/question mark). i thought maybe the disc was bad since its been scratched a few times so a friend made me a copy of some old 10.2 cds and they do the same thing.
So i thought maybe it was the superdrive so i hooked up my external dvd drive via firewire 400. i tried the cmd/opt/shift/del to boot from firewire and got nothing and then used the startup manager and never got it to bring up either disc from the superdrive or the external drive.
So i don't know what the problem could be..
    Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

just found this out...i need the actual powerbook install cds...haha oops...well suse is installing fine on it now

  • Problems when Booting my Mac/ Partitioning for Windows 7

    Hello Community,
3 months ago, i bought a MacBook Pro mid 2012-model. I was very satisfied until a really big problem occured.
The first time I recognized a boot-problem was when I restarted my Mac, a screen with the "forbidden-symbol" came up, after the Apple Logo. So I read some articles on the web and tried to restore my mac. After some trys, this was successfull after about 5h (got slow internet connection). I could also start my mac successfully, and in the boot menu, when hitting alt on the keyboard, a normal Mac partition, and a recovery partition could be seen (Before it only a Mac partition was there, no Windows and no recovery). So I started OS X successfully and looked into hard drive diagnostics and let the computer check the Hard Drive. It said that it was successfully, but after booting the second time (after successfull restore), I had the same problem again (and there was only one partition showing in the boot menu).
Finally, after 4 days of problem-solving, I managed to install windows 7 on my mac, without installing mac. Now I want to make a Mac recovery disk on windows, and use it for restoring.
    So my question is:
    1. What is causing the boot-problem and how can I solve that? I am sooooo desperated and just want to go back to Windows computers .
    2. If there is no chance I can repair my mac, how can I create a recovery diskon Windows? (This question is less important, but i'd be REALLY thankful for any hints)
    Thank you in advance!
    With best regards,
    David Al

Got it. Thanks for the help.  Isn't there any boot disk thing that I can just stick in there that will jerk the OS sideways and give me the Mac login screen, or did the Bootcamp/partition attack just wreck everything?  I don't see why I have to do an entire scrape of my totally updated and formerly working OSX just to retry a routine Bootcamp partition, which the girl at the Mac Store in Seattle here assured me has worked for them all the time.   It really is a crock. Maybe I shouldn't bother trying to put Windows 7 on there at all if all these latest versions are so flimsy. I wouldn't want to have to do it all again. But it looks like I'll have to at least once. And send Apple the bill for my wasted time. I ain't feelin' the glamour.

  • Shutsdown after start up when booting windows, mac side ok

    hello all,
i have a black macbook the last round of them before the new version came out. Ive been having some issues with the windows side of it. i play a online game on the windows side and during gameplay the screen's images and colors distort and then a blue screen flashes then the laptop shutsdown. im thinking i have a bad core component or something. but i reboot and it comes back like nothing happen. i jump on the mac side and mess around with garage band trying to make the system freak out, and it doesnt. so i jump back to the windows side and i keep playing my game, hoping to catch a glimpse of the error message on the screen before it shutsdown, but i cant. it is too quick. but i do notice it is not the default blue screen of death i have seen in cases of bad ram or HD issues.
this has been going on for a month or so. and in the last couple of weeks, it doesnt do it anymore. I lowered the resolution and video settings in the game. i thought it fixed it. but now, and it maybe totally unrelated, it will not boot up all the way. i will pwr up. hold option key, choose windows, windows boots up, i see my desktop, and as the start up programs (virus scan, network, etc. ) load, window powers off. like the battery is dead. i power on, load the mac side and it works as normal, pwer cycle, boot windows and it does the samething... shutsdown as the desktop is loading.
i dont think the hardware is having issues for i can run my mac side just fine... before i reload windows i wanted to see if there was anything i could do to solve this riddle.
    sigh...
sorry for my wall of text.
if i must go to a windows forum to try to solve this where should i go. windows forums dont seem as helpful as the forums here ><

    Hi Robert,
you could try the Safe Boot opions of Windows XP as described here http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B315222&x=10&y=11 to find out what is causing the constant reboot.
Especially the 'Boot Logging' option should be helpful.
Could be a bad driver or any other 'Startup Item' which causes this.
As for the 'Blue Screen', this could be a sort of overheating of the graphics chip, which you seem to have 'solved' by lowering the resolution and video settings, thus reducing the stress on the graphics chip.
    Hope it helps
    Stefan

  • I have recently downgraded my mac from yosemite to os mavericks but i want iwok apps which were free when i bought mac now why am i supposed to pay.

I was facing some problem in my macbook when i upgraded from os mavericks to new os yosemite. So I went to the apple store and they downgraded my macbook. Now after all the softwares removed i wanted to get pages keynote and pages in my laptop on which I have been working since so long. Initially i purchased them for free but now I am being asked to pay. What is the solution to this?

You cannot download the same Apps that you have on your iPhone. They are two seperate stores.
The store you have on your iPhone is the same for any iDevice (iPad, iPhone and iPod)
The store on your MacBook is only for Macs.

Help: What can I do to fix my screen issue-- It flashes for the first 20 seconds each time when I awaken my mac from sleep mode: Thanks!
    (mac pro 2007 intel based)

Thanks, Linc.  I was worried that since this was a refurbished computer, it was dying again.  Makes sense, although alittle annoying that nothing really warns you this is happening.  I almost cycled power the first couple times it happened, thinking it was stuck while waking.
