Flex and pure AS3, a few questions.

Hi all,
I have been developing AS3-only applications and am now looking into Flex. I have a few questions I would like to get more information on:
- is there a difference in performance between the CS3 components and the Flex components? What would be the key differences between the two?
- same question regarding drawing, is there a performance difference between drawing say, 10000 circles using pure AS3 and the same using mxml?
I hope the question are not too broad and will appreciate any feedback!
Thanks.

FLex components are always more resource hungry due to the amount of stuff UIComponent has to do, like the
component lifecycle.
Although FXG drawing is pretty good.

  • WebServices and Actionscript3.. a few questions

    Hi all,
I've set up a small example where I can connect to an .NET Web Service  in Flash using the Flex library mx.rpc.soap.WebService. So it works  fine... I was just wondering if anyone could give me some advice,  information, urls, suggestions or whatever about sending data objects  from client to server and viceversa.
    Some questions arise....
I know there is a RegisterAlias Method in AS3 but im guessing this only  works when using AMF protocols..? So would I have to map my classes  manually each time?
Can I send a data object from client to server? and if I can ... would  it be a Object data type in .NET? How could I access those properties?
    aaaaaaand... las question:
Would you recommend using the Headers for authentication with web services.?.. as this application must have also an authentication system.
    Many thanks!

  • I am now running Windows 7 Ultimate on my Macbook Pro and the through VMware Fusion Software and I have a few questions about the ins and outs.

So far I have a few kinks to work out. While running Internet Explorer 8, I get the error message, " Cannot connect to the internet." In Networks on the control panel, it says that I am connected to a local area public network but there is no internet access. How do I establish a connection to my existing network which works with the mac os? Also, of course, programs like Adobe, Quick Time Player, and uTorrent/bitorrent are already installed on my computer. Do I have to download them again on windows or can I import them or share them somehow?

I am about to run specialized GIS software that may or may not need the full machine resources. I am an attorney who uses QuickBooks for my accounting. The Mac version does not do as much as the Windows version. This is from both Apple and Quick Books professionals. I am using Parallels Desktop version 8 at this time. It does not support QuickBooks Windows version per Parallels. Any other questions? I am a highly competent PC user who is new to Macs. I am entitled to my own configuration choices. That said, I know when I need help which is now.
As to the free space issue I have 665.18 GB free space out of 749.3 GB on the drive. I am not trying to run the 32 bit version. I know that it requires the 64 bit version. Besides, it does not get that far in the process. As I said Boot Camp asssitant terminates unexpectedly as soon as you hit the continue button after setting the partition size. Therefore I conclude that it does not have a chance to see which version of Windows that I am using. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit version in the virtual engine (to use Parallels speak), but again Boot Camp would not see that since it is not running. It can't run at the momenet because Apple just installed a new hard drive and I have just restored the data from TIme Machine and Parallels needs reactivated, which I have not done yet deliberatley. With all of this addtiional information do you have any further suggestions? Thanks for your time and interest my issue.

  • Airport Extreme and Time Capsule – A few questions

    Hey guys,
I have a Belkin Modem/Router with a USB port for storage, but I just found out it only has 10/100 Ethernet, and can only mount 1 hard drive to that storage port. Other than that, it works fine and I am happy with it. Its stated wireless speed is 300mbps, and it supports 802.11n draft 2.0.
I also just got a Mac, and was considering a Time Capsule for using Time Machine (Or, because am also considering a Drobo, just a straight Airport Extreme).
    So my questions are:
    1. Is there any point in keeping the Belkin to use as my modem if it’s got 10/100 Ethernet ports? Will that make the Time Capsule/APE (And hence the attached drives/devices) perform at the slower speed?
    2. I don’t know if I can just “turn off” the Belkins Router abilities anyway. Assuming I can’t, will having 2 routers on my network even be possible? (Mac’s software is infinitely more user friendly, and I’d want to use it for my network).
    3. Is there a limit to how many Hard Drives I can connect to an Airport Extreme/Time Capsule? (My Belkin can only share one, even via a USB Hub – it only sees the first drive.)
    4. For now, my storage drives are standard HDD’s from WD and Seagate, but I am considering a Drobo (Some form of RAID storage is happening in the next few months, for sure).
    In either case:
    a) Will Airport Extreme recognize my External Hard Drive as a Time Machine Backup Destination? (And as a Drive to store other media)
    b) Will Time Capsule recognize my external hard drive, in addition to itself (Since it’s also a Hard Drive?)
    5. This page: ((http://www.apple.com/airportextreme/features/harddrivesharing.html)  says: “You can set up password-protected accounts for everyone on the network or allow read-only access to certain files and folders.”
Some folders, I don’t even want to allow read only access to. Can I require a password before they can be viewed, or modified/deleted? (If I go the time capsule rout, I would want to protect the drives attached to it, and probably not the HD on the capsule itself).
    6. Also, the rest of my computers are PC’s, and I was wondering if it’s possible (and safe) to set up time machine to backup to the time capsule for Mac, and allow the other PC’s to backup to it using their version of “Time Machine” too?
I know this will leave less room for mac and PC backups, but it would free up room on my Drobo / HDD’s
    7. Can Time Machine backup wirelessly to other drives, such as http://shop.nextbyte.com.au/Script/MCH/Products/532195-NextByte-WDBACG0020HCHAES N-WD-My-Book-Live-2TB
Thanks so much for your help.
P.S. Can anyone recommend a good modem to use with the Airprort/Time Capsule?

    No help?

  • Getting a new MBP and I have a few questions

I'm getting a new MacBook Pro, replacing my Late 2008 model (2.8 GHz T9600, 320 GB HD, 4 GB RAM) for this years' late 2011 model, a 2.4 GHz (2760QM) quad-core Intel Core i7 Sandy Bridge, 750 GB, 4 GB RAM.
Now, this new computer is basically an early xmas gift, as opposed to an informed purchase. I haven't done much research on the latest MBP, or their improvements in the past 3 years, so my first question is...how much of an improvement is this computer from my old 2008 model? Even though it's 3 years old, I've never had many problems with it. Programs like Photoshop and Logic work well. The only time the computer has shown its limitations is when I started playing Starcraft II.
Another issue: As we all know, our computers can get cluttered over time with forgotten apps, old versions of apps, old preferences or system files, remnants of apps I've deleted (I do have CleanApp but the program scares me...I'm afraid of deleting something important)...just digital garbage that manages to accumlate over time. There's some critical things that I want to transfer over from my old computer to the new one, but I don't want to transfer that clutter either. I'm pretty sure I prefer to start with a fresh disk and just slowly go through my old data while reinstalling the apps I want, but that brings up concerns about products that limit # of installs. I also don't want to worry about forgetting something, not realizing I've overlooked it until a while later. I'm sure I'm overthinking all this, but I'm sure people on here have gone through these options. I want to start fresh, but not completely fresh, you know? (e.g. I don't mind reinstalling Chrome, but I want to keep all my bookmarks)
    Last issue,
I may possibly enter a line of work where I'll need to work with Windows (uggh), so I want to know what the better option is...Boot Camp or Parallels? I had Parallels on the old computer and I found it frustrating. Especially since all of the Windows apps/files show themselves on Launchpad, or sometimes I would accidentally select a Windows item while in Finder and Parallels would start booting. Boot Camp seems much simpler, but I've never used it. Can you use an external hard drive for it, or do you have to partition your internal one? Is there someway you can transfer files between operating systems...this is the only appeal of Parallels if not. It doesn't have to be instantaneous; just wondering if I can access windows files while in OS X and vice versa.
Sorry for long post and all the questions , I look forward to the responses.

Performance differences for simple applications will be virtually undetectable when compared with your older MBP.  The more complex the application, the differences will be revealed.  Games often are notorious resource hogs and I suspect you will see a significant improvement there.
As far as transferring data, that is an individual call as to what is desirable and should be retained and what can be omited.  Before you start the transfer process, do have backups just in case.
Best of luck with your new MBP.
    Ciao.

  • I need help with iTunes. I just bought a new laptop and I have a few questions

So I  just bought a new laptop and few days ago. It's an HP. I have the iPhone 4 (8GB). So all my songs from iCloud are on my phone. I want to manually put them on my phone. All of my songs, videos, pictures etc. are on my new laptop. I went to apply the changes on iTunes when I selected "Manually manage music and videos". And a message came up saying "This iPhone is synced with another iTunes library on another PC. Do you want to choose to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library?" Under that it says "Erasing and syncing replaces the contents of this iPhone with the contents of this iTunes library."
So what do I do? I don't want to click sync and loose everything on my phone. I will no longer use the other comuter. I really need help.
    Thank you!

There are some instructions on this page for syncing to a new computer : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141
You should be able to copy iTunes purchased music from the phone via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases
If you still have your old computer and you haven't copied your library over form it, then there are also some methods listed on this page about how you could copy it over : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - the page refers to music, but I've used the home sharing method to copy apps, films etc between computers.

  • PLEASE HELP! Just switched to Mac and I have a few questions about bootcamp

I am looking to load Boot Camp onto my MacBook and want to know if it is necessary to save things like songs to an external hard drive(the computer is new so i don't have any important documents or files on it).
Second Question: I would consider myself somewhat of an intermediate user on the PC operating system but I am new to Mac and want to know if I should run Boot Camp on my own knowing just the basics of Mac.
    Thanks for any help,
    -Cody
    Florida

If you have nothing important, don't worry. If you want to save the songs to an external hard drive do so. The key is being aware that you could lose everything, so you should back up anything and everything you don't want to lose. If you can't afford to lose the songs, back them up somewhere. If it were me, I would back up the entire computer, just in case, but that's me. Just be sure to unplug the external hard drive before commencing the Windows installation.
As for running Boot Camp on your own, I don't see why not. Most of the problems people have is not with Boot Camp per se but with the installation of Windows. In particular, take care to not overwrite or break your Leopard installation by selecting the wrong disk partition to install Windows on, and make sure you then format (or quick format) the Boot Camp partition to FAT or NTFS. Do not choose the "convert to NTFS" option!

  • About to order my 1st Mac, and I have a few questions...

I have decided on getting an iBook. I don't think I need a PowerBook for my use (mainly email, internet, wordprocessing, iTunes + playing The Sims). I don't feel like I can justify the extra cost. I've never used an external monitor with my current laptop, so I don't think that will be a problem either.
    So, here are the questions I have before I place my order;
    1. Should I go with the 12" or the 14"? I like the idea of the extreme portability the 12" offer, and a fried of mine says that the 14" screen seems a bit blurry.
    2. Should I get an external keyboard and mouse for when I'm working at home. I'm thinking the keyboard on the 12" one is kinda' small...
    3. The silly question at last; Does the Apple light up, like it does on the PowerBook? (Not that it really matters, I'm just wondering.)

I say get the 12" if you're into portability because I agree with your friend about the screen being blurry compared to the 12". Others on here will have differing opinions, but there are also some who feel the same.
    2. Should I get an external keyboard and mouse for when I'm working at home. I'm thinking the keyboard on the 12" one is kinda' small...
The keyboard on the 12" and the 14" is exactly the same size. It feels like a full-size keyboard when you type most words. I'd recommend that you may want a mouse though. The trackpad can get annoying to a lot of people sometimes.
    3. The silly question at last; Does the Apple light up, like it does on the PowerBook? (Not that it really matters, I'm just wondering.)
Yup! The Apple lights up when it's on. It's just another whole "ooh" and "aah" effect. You'll find a lot of that stuff when you're dealing with Apple. It just screams quality.

  • A few questions and some things we found about Memory Management

We have been development a pretty complex RIA in flash; true
we probably should have used flex but we are very heavily invested
in flash and moving to flex was not really an option due to time
constraints and the learning curve associated with changing. That
reminds me are the Flex UI Objects going to be made available for
Flash CS3 I mean that advanced datagrid would be nice?
The application is a order processing and document
management system that has around 150 swf’s and I am posting
here to let people know what we found through our development and
testing cycles and also have a few questions that I am hoping
someone will at least point me in the right direction.
We were kind of disappointed to find that you could no
longer duplicate Movies and were forced to reload them if we wanted
different instances, but we got over that fast. Keeping this in
mind we decided to make as many dynamic screens as we could but
these turned out to be horribly time consuming. I mean sure we
could make the fields jump around like fleas on a dogs back (and it
was a great joke) but not very practical. So back to the IDE and
fla creation we went. This leads me to my first question has anyone
see heard of or thought about a SWF file reader that would read the
layout of a SWF and then generate the actionscript as output?
As we were developing we found that it was more complex, and
I think unnecessarily so, to get connected to a database. We use
ColdFusion as our “middleware” so it wasn’t to
bad and this leads me to my next question. Is there or has there
been any indication that Flex data services or well I guess BlazeDS
now is available for Flash CS3?
So we went on our merry little way and everything was going
great until testing this is when we started to see what kind of
memory flash really eats up. In the beginning our app would take up
a gig through the course of a day.
Any Class that we created we added a CleanUp method to it.
Yes we used weak listeners, yes we destroyed, and all references to
the main movies, and yes that was it the main movies.
Don’t be fooled the same way we were. The Garbage
    collection simulation
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashplayer/articles/garbage_collection.html
does not really tell you the whole story. Even though if you cut
the line from the root the simulation suggests that the rest of the
objects that you have created within that object will be marked and
    collected. Not so.
After much testing we found that if we wanted a full recovery
of memory the object and it’s sub objects and sub sub ojects
within arrays also with sub objects must be deallocated and then
assinged null to get full collection, I say full but really mean
between 90-95% reminds me of my C programming days.

  • A few questions before I buy a new iMac/Mac mini and sign up for Creative Cloud.

    Hello Everyone,
I am looking to purchase a new Apple computer and sign up for Creative Cloud within the next week and I have a few questions that should be answered before I proceed.
My wife and I own a business and we will be using the CS6 apps to create brochures, Constant Contact mailings, product package inserts, edit product photography for print and web use, and short HD how-to videos. We are not graphics professionals or power users and wont be doing anything too complicated.
Any help and answers will be greatly appreciated.
I will start with the hardware questions first:
I am trying to decide between the iMac and the Mac mini.
The iMac is a 2.7Ghz Quad-core Intel core i5 and comes with 4GB of memory that is expandable to 16GB, which I will do for sure. It comes with a Radeon HD 6770M graphics card with 512MB of GDDR5 memory(not upgradable), and a 1TB HDD that runs at 7200RPM. This unit meets the specs required.
The 2.5Ghz Mac Mini comes with 4GB of memory that is expandable to 8GB, I will also do this. It has a Radeon HD 6630M graphics card with 256MB of GDDR5 memory(not upgradable), and a 500GB HDD that runs at 5400RPM. This unit meets all the spec(I think) except for the speed of the HDD.
Question: Will the mini run the software without too much of an issue considering the speed of the HDD?
Question: Will the iMac run the software significantly better to justify the price difference?
I already have 1 mini(purchased 4 months ago, with the same specs listed above) and will be purchasing a second computer for my wifes desk. If the mini will run CS6 fine, that is great and we can save a few bucks. If my mini will not run CS6 well, I will get the iMac for her desk as she will be doing the bulk of the work in that regard anyway.
Now a couple of software questions.
After reading hundreds of reviews and forum posts over the last few days I have seen many people having this or that issue. It seems to me that most of the issues are because of upgrades from Lion to Mountian Lion after installing CS6 first or trying to open CS3,4,5 files in CS6.
If you want to know what issues have me concerned take a look at just this one forum:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2012/07/adobe-cs-apps-mountain-lion-no-known-issues.html
Similar issues are discussed in the Apple forums as well as many other places around the web.
I am not a computer professional but I know enough to maintain my systems and keep them running smoothly.
We do not have any Adobe software installed on my mini and will not be opening any files from previous versions of Adobe product in the new CS6 software. These will be a clean installs on pristine systems running fully updated Mountian Lion OS's on both machines and creating new files from scratch.
Question: Should I be expecting any issues like the ones I have read in the forums and blogs or are these just the normal things that happen when upgrading to new software with multiple hardware configurations?
My feeling is that we will not be having too much of a problem due to the clean installs and no files from previous versions.
Next up, the Creative Cloud(CC) FAQ states that you can install on 2 machines but can't open stuff at the same time.
Question: Does this mean we can't be using any CS6 apps at the same time or just not using the same app at the same time?
Example: PS and PS on both machines at same time = No, PS on one and Dreamweaver on the other at the same time=Yes?
The CC FAQ page says Adobe will add Lightroom 4 later in 2012 while the main CC page lists it as available now.
    Question: Which is true?
My mini is registered to me, with my name, iTunes account, Apple ID etc.
Question: Do I need to do the initial set-up of the new machine with all my information to ensure the CS6 suite works on both machines? Do the computers need to be registered(as far as Apple configuration is concerned) to same person for them to work on one CC account or can I install CS6 on any 2 machines regardless of how they were initially set-up?
This may seem like a silly question but I want to avoid any problems before they happen.
Well, those are all of my questions at the moment. To anyone who made it this far in my looooong post, Thank You so much for your time. I appreciate your expertise and knowledge and hope that you can help me make this decision.
    Cheers,
    Alex Bogdan

    Alex,
I'll try and answer your questions as best I can.
    Qn 1 Which Mac.
Ans:- As I understand it both units will run Adobe CS6.
Which one really depends on what you wand from CS6. If you are looking for high end demand and performance, then I would go for the IMac
Your Specs for the Imac are right. However if you buy your IMac straight from Apple there are even higher specs.
              You can get:-
3.4 GHz i7 processor rather than the i5
2GB video card as opposed to a 1Gb video card.
Of course such a model will cost you more.
In the end it is needs compared with money to spend. That is only a decision you cam make.
Q2:- Will the higher cost for the Imac justify copst.
Ans:- Again it depends on what demands you intend to make on the hardware and software.
But I note you have a business and if that businees expects to high demand and high speedy performance then I suspect the Imac would be more able to provide your needs.
Again only you will know the answer to that.
    Q3:- Questions about CS6 reliability
Ans:- I have been with Adobe for way over 10 years.
Speaking, only for myself, it is the most reliable software on the market.
It is true that if you look down this form, like any other and I am thinking about the Apple discussions forum, you will find numerous instances of problems.
Again this is only my opinion, but although all these problems are real for the individuals:-
First it is not clear why they have the problem e.g. what have they done or not done.
Second, they are in the minority of the total users using the hardware / software.
The only problem I am aware of with CS6 is Acrobat X. I understand it has been sorted Adobe, however it cost me so much work I have removed it from my system and reverted to Acrobat 9
So what I am saying is that there are only two comapnies I rely 100% on: They are Adobe and Apple.
So if you are happy with my opinion I would not worry about Adobe CS6
    Qn 4:- CS6 0n 2 machines.
Ans:- Yes you will not be able to run the same program similtaneosly.
I believe, if it is important that you do run the same program together, that you can acquire a further licience from Adobe to do that.
You would need to contact Adobe about that.
    Qn 5:- Lightroom 4
Ans:- Lightroom is now available as part of Creative Cloud.
Qn 6:- Set up for individual machines
Ans:- I do not believe you do. Once you have set up your Creative Cloud account you go to the apps site and download the apps for each machine.
Each machine downloads the apps and your machine and the apps are registered by Adobe.
Here is something that you may want to know:-
Because I was so unhappy loosing all the Acrobat data with Acrobat X I ended up deleting Acrobat X
However as far as Creative Cloud is concered Acrobat X is still on my machine.
It is not a problem for me because I am happy with Acrobat 9, it fullfils my needs and has not crashed and lost me all my bookmarks.
              However here is the point:-
Adobe, when there was a problem with Acrobat X requested that no-one deletes the application.
Though I do not know for certain I believe registration of the apps you have with Creative Cloud are registered with Creative Cloud in their database. Therefore were you to delete an app, it will still be registered with Creative Cloud and you will not be able to download a further copy even though the app is no longer on your    machine.
Therefore it maybe not a good idea to delete an app when you no longer have a use for it. If you want it back I suspect you will have to contact Adobe Support
    Personal Comment:-
It is true many unfortunately have had all sorts of problems, including me with Acrobat X.
That said, Creative Cloud in my view has been a major advance in how Adobe delivers software. I have no regrets with signing up to Creative Cloud and I expect to remain with it.
Hope all of that goes some way to answering your questions.

  • A few questions about the Zen Mi

I'm looking into the Zen Micro 5GB, and I have a few questions that I couldn't find on the sight or aren't completely sure of. Sorry if I'm just blind and didn't see them, but I figured you guys could help.
) How do you charge the battery? I'm assuming its with some sort of adapter, and if so, is it included with the player?
    2) It says Windows 98SE is compatible, so does this mean regular Windows 98 won't work at all? I'm currently using W98 but will probably be upgrading soon so it chouldn't be too much of a problem, but if W98 is supported I could order it sooner.
    3) Will it work in tandem with a cassette adapter for a car? A cassette adapter isn't on the accessories page, but will one I already own work just fine?
Those are all I can think of right now, thanks in advance for your help, and feel free to leave any comments about the player that any of you have.

the headphone jack problem is not really fixed. If you rather not have it happen to early, i would suggest you take really good care of your ZM's headphone jack. Just take good care of it. But the headphone jack problem may occur at any point, i dunno why. it is very strange, some owners are lucky that the problem will occur in 6-2 months or maybe not at all for now. There are some owners that are unlucky that the problem may occurred like 2 weeks to couople months. I am currently trying to take really good care of my ZM after all the great lessons i learned from my previous mp3 players.
the headphone jack problem isn't fix, so be cautious a bit.

  • A few questions from a REAL beginner

OK, so I am very very very new to HTML, CSS and Dreamweaver and I have a few questions. But before I start let me just state that I have been messing around with HTML, CSS and Dreamweaver for like one week so take it easy if these questions are obvious.
    1. Is there a way to create a type of "sign in" function that is relatively easy? Or do you have to have knowledge of many different scripts and languages to do so?
    2. I would like to have an archive system where if I post an article on my site and then two days later i post another one it saves the first one i posted and can be viewed in some form over time. Is this possible?
    3. If multiple people will be posting on my site is there a way I can have it set up where the articles automatically say "posted by _______" after each person signs in (If #1 is possible of course)
    4. And lastly, this one is similar to #2 but is there a way to make a blog type setup in Dreamweaver? Yes, yes i know there is wordpress and I frequently use wordpress but you can only have on blog page per url and i dont like that. I am trying to be able to write multiple articles in a day and would like for them all to be reached pretty easily.
Thanks in advance to the brave person who will put up with my childish questions.
And just so you all know i would like for the person answering these to explain them as if they were talking to a child lol

    Heya,
First you have to choose a scripting language in order for one to direct you to tutorials on how to use it. I recommend php as it seems to be the most widely used and supported. Then go over the the Application Development forum since that's where most discussions of this nature reside.
Whatever scripting language you choose you'll have to setup a database first. I recommend MySQL; again as it seems to be the most widely used. Then connect your database to dreamweaver through the Server Behaviors window. After that you can add server behaviors to help in your development. For instance Dreamweaver has server behaviors to create registration, signup, restrict access pages. Then you can have a page that uses a Insert Record, Update Record, Remove Record server behavior to add, edit, or remove blog entries into your database. After that have another page that uses the Recordset server behavior to get a record of the database. You can then display the record on the page by dragging the value of the recordset from the Bindings Window in Dreamweaver. There's also repeat region server behavior to repeat the record to show (all or) a set amount of entries like blog1, blog2, blog 3 etc. There's also a Paging server behavior to automatically create page indexes of blog entries so first 10 on one page with links to page 1, 2, 3, 4 previous, next, first last, etc. to show additional entries on respective pages.
Your best course of action is to have a definite agenda of development goals. First choose a scripting language, then setup your database. Connect your database to Dreamweaver, then add server behaviors. That's the workflow for dynamic development. After that creating your feature is basically only a matter of what server behaviors to use and what queries to run to your database. If you have any other questions about development it may be best to ask further inquiries in the Application Development forum. If/when you do ask in the forum about stuff like this then mention what scripting language and database model you're using.
Oh and also if this is your first venture into dynamic development then do yourself a favor first and setup a local testing server on your computer. What kind of computer are you using? Mac/PC and what OS version? There's different ways of setting up a local testing server depending on your computer and OS.
I am in the Application Development forum a lot so if you have any other questions regarding dynamic application development just hit me up there.
    Hope that helps!

  • A few questions on switching from my powermac G5 to a 17" macbook pro

Hi, picking up at used macbook pro on monday(Apple MacBook Pro MA611LL/A 17" Notebook PC (2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD SuperDrive)
I'm going to use it as my main machine with an external keyboard and mouse hooked up, along with an external 23" cinema display in extended desktop mode. Then when I need to work somewhere else I'll just unplug it and go.
A few questions from a new macbook user:
    • What's the best way to migrate all my apps, data, photos, etc. Should I use migration assistant? I'm a web designer with dozens of small apps that I may not have the installers for but would like to do a fresh install of the ones I have like CS3. With migration assistant can I just pick some apps to move over, or do they all move over and does it transfer the registration info in case I misplaced certain serial numbers?
    • I'll be selling my desktop, I know you can only install CS3 on one machine, how do I get the CS3 "unactivated" on my Desktop so I can install it on the macbook pro? I own the copy of CS3 and have the dvd's and such.
    • I have a TON of Dreamweaver sites defined, whats the simpleist way to transfer the site info over so I don't have to track down all of that ftp info for every site?
    • I have over a year of Time Machine backups on my current desktop machine, do I transfer those over somehow so my macbook reads them or is it just better to start over with a fresh time machine backup?
    • Will I have any issues with my Iphone or appletv with itunes thinking I'm authorizing a new computer but I'm really only going to be having one machine?
    • The person I'm buying it from is doing a clean install of the system, when I get it should I go ahead and do a fresh Leopard install just to make sure its done properly, and if so is there are there "best practices" on doing that?
    • Any other tips or advice?
Thanks in advance, I know thats a lot of questions?
    Jeff

While waiting for responses, I came up with this reload script after a little research. The only major problem is that it makes the entire page blink when it reloads. Any thoughts on improving or completely changing it to get rid of the blink and keeping everything efficient?

  • New T530 a few questions

I have a new T530 and just have a few questions.. (ok its at home as of typing this so some i can't test right away)
Swapping the fn and ctrl keys, from research I can do this from the bios, correct?
Is there a way to use the wireless switch to disable just bluetooth? or is this a bios setting as well? (yes I know i could disable in the device manager)
Is there a way to have the backlight on the keyboard turn on when using the keyboard rather than having to manually turn it on everytime?
also i have 16GB ram in this machine, but it appears some gets taken for the intel graphics, though I do have the nvidia NVS graphics option. is there a way to disable the intel portiion so i gain this ram back? (agreed, this is more of me complaining than a question)
last, I currently have the intel Centrino Wireless-N 2200 (2x2 BGN) card, and was interested in upgrading to the Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 AGN, can i just get one from any store? or do i need the "lenovo" model. I would like to get th 6300 but it appears to have just 2 connectors instead of 3.
    Thanks

You can do this with Fn-F5 (user's guide, P23) (English) User Guide
The pop-up menu will give you the option to enable/disable wifi and/or bluetooth.  Is that what you were looking for?

  • Just bought a powermac g4, few questions

i just bought this machine today and i had a few questions with it, installing leopard as we speak.. so far 2003 model MDD with a 1.25 dual , 2 GB of ram.. i opened the case up and noticed a copper heatsink.. is this a factory installed heatsink or no. i thought the 1.25's get the aluminum one.

Nice bonus! 47C is quite good if you're not running CHUD with nap mode.
well i think i should be pretty safe about overclocking the G4 dont you think?
It depends on what you have. IMO, 7455A would be best left alone even with the copper heatsink. 7455B, on the other hand, might be tempting to experiment with. Browse through the reader reports at Xlr8yourmac.com. A lot of folks report these running stable at 1.42 or even 1.5 without any adjustments to core voltage. Of course, there are no guarantees. Take care when removing resistors in case you have to bridge those contacts later.
