Flextime - quantizing audio tracks??

I'm just wondering if there is a way to use Flextime to quantize live audio tracks (as opposed to sampled audio tracks).  Example:  I've got this wonderful accordion track, traditional music ... the tempo moves all over the place.  I want to experiment with adding an untraditional rhythm track / bass.  I've tried beat-mapping ... but even though I can track the accordion, the varying tempo of the added rhythm tracks just sounds weird.
Is there a way using Flextime that I can do the opposite: get the accordion (live-audio) track to quantize to a click track?  Ideally all at once, as opposed to me having to rebuild it all note by note.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated,
Ben

Hi
Were the original audio recordings done in Logic 9? If they were, they will automatically have the 'original recorded tempo' (of the original project) embedded within the file. This can cause problems with Flex.
If need be, you can remove the tempo info using Options:Tempo:Remove Tempo Info...
If you have enabled Flex, the files are analysed and Transient Markers added. If you did this with the current project at the "wrong tempo", you may need to remove the transient markers and start again.
It is usually better to beat map 1st, to get the tempo/tempo changes close, then enable Flex to "pin" the Transients to the current tempo map. Once done, you can easily switch tempo maps to another (possibly static) tempo map, and Flex can do it's magic.

  • Quantizing Audio Tracks without Strip Silence?

    Hi Y'all,
I'm kind of a nube, but I cannot figure this out. I've figured out from other folks' posts that the "strip silence" feature is only for Logic Pro (right?). So, that being the case, how do I quantize my audio tracks? For example, a common scenario is I play several bars of 8th notes on my guitar, and, having no rythym, I want to quantize them. Here is what I am doing now:
    1. Cut the audio file with scissors into individual notes
    2. Arrange the anchor point of each individual 8th note to the peak
    3. Quantize them in the Event list.
This works, but it's super labor intensive, and hard on the old carpal tunnels. Is there an easier way, short of buying Logic Pro? Many thanks. - Josh

Hi, try to use the "Enhance Timing" Plug-In on the Guitartrack.
It has to be inserted in the first slot of the channel strip.

  • Audio-tracks delayed

With my *Digi 003 rack* and *Logic Studio Pro 8.0.2* I suddenly have recorded audio-tracks delayed when played back. If I play a guitar right on click and play it back, it is totally out of timing. Never had that one before. When I use the *Apogee Duet Soundcard*, all is working fine. Has anyone any idea what that may be?
    Cheers!

    Hi Anthro,
I just repeat this test for you rigth now..
it is very fresh test... in order to have a perfect sync when recording an external instrument with "Software Monitoring" turn to "OFF" (for be able to repeat this test on Logic that usually is used with SW turned to "ON" you must restart Logic or Core Audio before starting the test)
I repeat this test refering to specific Logic setting : *Software Monitoring turn to "OFF"*
(when SW is turn to ON, every external incoming Audio input is recorded in perfect sync with the SMPTE and BPM time)
I have use an External Midi Drum machine as sound source!
    see the following pictures:
this is the MIDI object quantize at 1/4:
this is the Audio recording of the MIDI object and the relative coreaudio setting preferences
    *software monitoring off*
this is the Audio recording of the same Midi object with a correct Recording Delay Compensation setting.
    *software monitoring off*
If you have doubt about this test, feel free to replay me... I hope this should be help you to find a good sync....
in any case... this is not the same for all Audio devices, they can have different driver-hardware adding or less DELAY...there are faster device like Motu 828mk3 and there are not so fast device like as Digidesign core audio drivers that have proprietary security and rigths protection)
however, FOR A PERFECT Sync... i suggest to extend the resolution of the Samples Editor...
bacause some device can be set as 1124 instead 1024 (or different value)
(on My MOtu I get a near to perfect sync around 1009 /1012 Delay
(I hope this post can be helpful also for the people that they +*"cannot believe that"*+ )
    Good Luck

  • HELP! External MIDI is playing EARLY compared to the audio tracks!

    Hi Guys
I have a project in L9 which has about 12 audio tracks, each running a few effects (fairly basic ones, nothing too heavy).
Tonight I am recording a rhythm part on an external MIDI device (my Kurzweil synth). I'm quantising this part to 1/8 notes, and in the piano roll editor, it's lining up perfectly after quantization.
However, when I play back the project, the MIDI is all EARLY!
I've tried soloing just the MIDI and the click, and the MIDI part runs uniformly early compared to the click track.
I believe this has something to do with the delay compensation that is in effect across all the audio channels... what's happening is that all the audio content is being delayed so all the tracks sync with each other. But for some reason, MIDI is not part of this delay compensation, and is playing in perfect time, and hence sounding early compared to the audio material.
I've done a test new project with just one MIDI track, and when quantized, it DOESN'T suffer this problem... ie, it aligns perfectly with the click track.
Is there any way to get external MIDI instruments to be part of the delay compensation process? Or is there some other solution to this issue?
Really desperate here as this has come out of the blue and I can't think of any way to solve it!
    Thanks heaps guys,
    Mike

Is this something new for Logic 9?
I don't know, I have never used external MIDI with Logic (8 or 9) - but think it is new, yes.
I wonder if there's a way to set the global default for MIDI so that it always has delay compensation? I can't see why anyone would want to use an external MIDI device and not have it in perfect time with their audio material!
Yes, there is. You'll have to set it up in AMS first (choose *New Device*, and then configure the device and cable it) In Logic, you'll have to go into the Environment. You need a *Standard Instrument Object* for a monotimbral device, a, *Multi-Instrument Object* for multitimbral devices and a *Mapped Instrument object* for Drummodules. Explanation starts on pg 1082 of the LP9 pdf manual.
Once it is all setup, you can make a template of it, or you can import the Environment layer into new projects.

  • Logic pro x quantizing audio

    Hi,
do you think it is possible to quantize a short audio loop? I am trying to use a short loop from a song but when I detect its TEMPO it comes out irregular and I cannot make an appropriate drum track. What is the best way to overcome this issue? In a tutorial I have seen that there was a quantize option that I think is not more utilized and been substituted with Follow Tempo. If I cannot quantize audio, How can I transform an audio file into MIDI?
    Someone can help me?
    Thank you.
    Angelo

If it's a drum loop, convert it to a sampler track.
Just do option-click or right click on the region to open the context menu. Navigate to Convert/New Sample track. A dialog  pops up, you need to select "create zone from transient markers', adjust the note range, if needed and click OK. Now, the audio will be chopped and loaded into the EXS and a MIDI track will be created. Open the MIDI region to re-quantize stuff, re-order, etc. It's real fun!!
    Enjoy!

  • Cant seem to quantize audio regions?

I have read the manual which says the following:
"In order to use quantization on an audio region, you need to assign a flex mode to the parent audio track, and select the Flex parameter in the Region Parameter box for that region....
To change the quantization grid division for selected audio and/or MIDI regions
Choose a value from the Quantize pop-up menu in the Inspector’s Region Parameter box."
I've done that but nothing happens??
Also I don't understand the correlation between the track parameter box, and the region parameter box, do I have to set them both to the quantize setting that I want, or just one of them?? I have tried it all ways and I cant get it to work.

Worth downloading MPC quantizes if you can - they were made for drums. (Wish Logic would come up with some new quantizes though - they've been the same since year dot)...
You can download the MPC quantizes here:
    http://www.logic-cafe.com/Article_View.asp?ID=14&CategoryID=8
You'll need to open the above Logic song & copy the folders to your song (preferably your own template so that they're there every). Open the MPC folders in the song, select all regions simultaneously, then select "Make Groove template" from the Quantize menu in the Inspector. Hide the folders (don't delete them - they need to be there in order for Logic to remember the Quantizes).
You can also make extensive use of the "Delay" offset in the inspector (moving regions forward or back in time in small increments) or better still use the "Nudge Left" / "Nudge Right" functions (set to ticks ors samples). I have these two buttons (as well as "Nudge Value") permanently in my arrange toolbar.

On my ipad 2 I can't "see" the hundreds of spoken audio tracks that are in my itunes and on my ipod touch. Is there something I didn't do during sync up? The tracks are from voice recordings that were downloaded from an extrernal drive and weren't necessarily tagged as spoken audio. Do I need to go back into itunes and relabel these tracks so they will show up on my ipad2?
Thanks in advance for your help!

With the iPad connected to the computer, while iTunes is running, click on the iPad name on the left side under devices. Click on the Movies tab and look for Movie Rentals. You want to "Move" the films to the iPad.

  • Multiclip - mutliple audio tracks

This question has been asked before, but I'll reiterate it. If the support doesn't exist, hopefully apple dev will take it into consideration.
I shoot a lot of weddings and events. FCP's 5.0.x multiclip feature has been a lifesaver. I know the short answer to the following question is "get a mixer and do it in the field right the first time," which I'm working on. BUT, in the meanwhile...
Setup: 3-camera live shoots. We run three different mics: one cam has a wireless lapel mic on the groom; another has a wireless with a directional mic placed at readers' podium/spot; last is an on-camera mic.
Throughout the event the different mics are better for different sound: lapel mic for vows, directional mic for speakers, on-camera mic for organ and songs.
My FCP workflow so far has been this (and it could be the problem): export audio to .aiff, tweak it in STP, bring back into FCP, and link it with clip.
Here's the issue (finally!): Whenever I make these clips a "multiclip," the audio tracks (six in this case) are all automatically mixed together into two tracks in the multi-clip. All my hard work tweaking sound in STP is lost. (Again, might be a workflow issue.)
Does anyone know how to import the audio tracks, while still linked to the video, into a multiclip (and avoid manual synching in FCP timeline)?
I know one solution is to bring the separate audio files in and synch them manually in the timeline. But here's hoping someone can suggest something a bit less time-consuming...
    Thanks for any help!

    Thanks for the reply.
Yes, the audio is set up with six total audio tracks (two per video feed). I'm viewing the clips with "Video & Audio" selected as you described.
I'm synching clips I've cleaned up in STP manually ... but that's not the issue.
    Here's the issue:
    Pre multiclip files:
    V1 - A1, A2
    V2 - A3, A4
    V3 - A5, A6
    --->convert to multiclip<---
    Post multiclip files:
Viewer Window: V1, V2, V3 in multiclip config
Timeline Video: whichever angle I select
    *Timeline Audio* - A1*, A2*
Going to item properties for the audio tracks shows that A1* is comprised of A1, A3, A5 and A2* is comprised of A2, A4, A6. All the original audio tracks are there in the new multclip audio, just mixed together.
I want to know if there's a way to separate those audio tracks in the timeline on the mutliclip. I'd like to work with the separate tracks for the best sound rather than the "mixed" audio that multiclip seems to do automatically.

    Hello All...
Back after a brief absence, things look a little bit different.
I'm trying to take a 16 minute mini dv video and compress it for use on the web. I'm interested in any suggestions you may have on settings for the video and audio tracks. I've tried using Sorenson 3 (15 frames, key frames set to automatic, 320 x 240) for video and IMA 4:1 (mono) for audio. The resulting video looked great but the file size came in at about 255 Mb.
    Thanks!

Thank you for the replies.  Everyone was correct about the jack, interface, and phasing problems.  I have been unplugging my motu audio interface and then using headphones at work.  I have not changed any detailed audio output settings in logic.  When I read that the jack might be a problem I tried switching headphones.  This actually helped.  I am using dre-beats headphones and they seem to be having issues with the mac/jack-(the phasing/panning problems.  I can use these headphones with other devices but not the mac.  I have to use ipod ear buds and the phasing seems fixed.  Hopefully this information is helpful to someone else.
If anyone knows how to correct this issue please let me know its difficult to know what my final mixes are going to sound like and I have had to keep bouncing everything into i-tunes- sync to ipod and then listen in my car radio.

  • 2 Audio tracks on one video?

    Hello,
I have two videos that are the close to the same...and are pretty close in length.
One of the AUDIOS i want to use for practice and the other for the Actual process.
So what i would like to do is set it up so either video can have BOTH audios.
People will be watching them many times so to keep them from getting board
with having one audio for one video. I want them to be able to change the audio.
So when watching one of the videos for a week with the practice audio
the can then watch the video next week with the Actual process
and visa versa for the other video.
I know there is a way to add subtitles or a different language to a video.
But these will be only 2 videos of 7 total in the DVD.
Is there a way to do this? if so could someone please explain or direct me to a video or tutorial
on how i might do this?
    Thanks so Much!
    Soshman

    Here's one way:
The 5 videos with one audio will just be regular timelines. Lets call the two other videos with the 2 audios V1 and V2. And the two audios A1 and A2.
So you want one timeline with V1, and in Audio track 1 you will have A1, and in Audio track 2 you will haveA2. In another timeline with V2, you will have in Audio track 1 A2, and in Audio track 2 you will have A1.
You will have a menu that will select the audio track. See help:

  • Easiest way to sync 2 audio tracks - detect beats?

I record bands using a camcorder and simultaneously record hi quality audio using a multi-track recorder.  My previous software automatically recognized that the audio tracks were similar and sync'ed them for me.  So far...  trying to sync my hi fidelity MP3 with the camcorder audio/video has been difficult.  I tried using "beat detect" but I don't see how to use that on 2 different audio tracks to sync them.  Once they are synched, I delete the camcorder audio and I am left with the same video with awesome audio.  What is the easiest/fastest way to sync 2 virtually identical audio tracks?

Thanks for the WAV file tip.  I zoom in as far as I can (unless I'm missing something) and I rarely see the waveform.  The attached graphic shows one of the tracks as a very "low resolution" waveform (I see no way to accurately line up tracks using this waveform).  I hoped to use "detect beats" on both tracks to, at least, get close.  Is there a way to expand the waveforms vertically so I can actually see the waves and align them?  I'm trying to align Audio 1 and Audio 2.  This is what I see:

  • Unable to perform multi audio tracks mixing with Audio Mixer

How do you get a simple multi track mix with the Premier Pro 1.5 Audio Mixer?
I got 2 audio clips, each sitting at the start of its own separate track (Audio 1 and Audio 2). I just want to mix them into the Master track.  Simple enough.
So I go to the Audio Mixer. Position the CTI at the start of the tracks and hit the red RECORD button. The red spot starts blinking. Then I hit the START/STOP button expecting the tracks to start mixing into the Master track. Instead, I get this error message
"PLAYER ERROR: You cannot record without enabling at least one track for recording."
I get the same problem if I try the mix onto a submix track.
What am I missing? I combed through the Premiere Pro User Guide and J. Rosenberg's Premiere Pro Studio Techniques but to no avail.
    Thanks for any help.
    JB.

Jacques, I havn't seen 1.5 for a while, so I need to stress that what I'm about to say is more of an educated guess linked to a rough memory.
Each audio track in the mixer has a small chip (tickbox in 1.5??) that you click in order to enable that track for recording. In CS3 it's a little microphone.
Having said that, I DON'T think that's going to give you what you want, as the intention of the recording functionality in PP is to record audio FROM AN EXTERNAL SOURCE (like a microphone) straight to an audio track, say, when doing a Voice Over for some video.
You can't "mix down" to the master, as the master is not a track per se. It's just a "final" level control. The master will always be the sum of the active tracks, and THAT'S what will be rendered in the final output.
You can still "live mix" your audio with the faders, it's just that those movements get recorded as keyframes on each of the tracks you modify (including, BTW, the Master).
The advantage to this workflow is that every fader move you make is infinitley editable... a small error when riding the faders can easily be fixed by dragging keyframes.
    HTH.

  • Unable to access other audio tracks

I have some non-iTunes videos which have alternate audio tracks.  Both Windows Media Player and VLC can see them easily.
    Windows Media Player
    VLC
However I can't seem to select an audio track for the files on either iTunes or Apple TV.  Everything I've found on how to searches on here either lead to the Audio & Subtitles option is grayed out from the Controls Menu and on the Apple TV I press and hold select but no menu comes up.
I have iTunes 11.3.0.54 with a fully patched Windows 7.  Any Suggestions.  All I can get in iTunes is that Catalan track.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

  • Audio tracks suddenly missing from capture... need help!

Hi! I have been capturing video (with audio) successfully and routinely for months now. Suddenly, though, when I capture video... from the same device, with the same preset... the clips have only 1 Video track, and no Audio tracks. My camera is still recording audio (and I still hear it during the capture), but the audio tracks just aren't there in the resultant clip. It seems to me like FCE has just decided not to capture audio, as if to say "pffft... we don't need that." But why this happened is beyond me!
Even within this same project, I have other clips captured with audio just fine. I didn't even realize it was an option NOT to capture audio. There aren't any settings to that effect in the Capture window... i.e. there's nothing to turn OFF, so I don't know how to turn it back ON! HELP! How do I get audio back on my captured clips? Is there a way to toggle this? How can I possibly be getting video without audio when the preset has already been working for this device?
Things seemed to change once I started using the Voice Over tool. After that, none of my captured clips have audio. Something I did on or around that time changed FCE internally. I combed through the manual but didn't see any leads. They assume if you have the right preset, it'll just work. No mention of disabling audio.
Please help, because I'm just about ready to throw my Mac throw the wall. I even tried reinstalling FCE, just to get it back to the previous state, but it didn't help.
P.S. I also haven't changed anything on my camera that would affect audio. I feel this is just a setting somewhere in FCE that I can't find and don't even know where to look for it...
    Thanks in advance!!

Hi. Where should I look for them? I haven't had much success finding things on my own, so please spell it out for me.
I just find this so odd... it would be one thing for the tracks to be silent or garbled, then I would think this was a cable issue or the camera. But I can't even imagine why the audio tracks would just not be there. If I saw a preference for "Video Only Capture" somewhere, it would make sense.
Anyway, thanks. Please tell me where there's a prefs file, and I'll roast it.

  • Pros Res linking audio tracks

When I capture HD footage using either ProRes or Intermediate Codec, I'm unable to adjust the audio channels independently. If I capture the same footage using the regular old HDV 720p30 or 60 preset, the tracks are independent.
I'm loving the video quality with ProRes, but if I can't separate the audio track (e.g. potting down the camera mic for an interview it's pretty worthless.
There's got to be a way to do this, right?

One other question: is there a way to log individual clips using ProRes, or does one always end up with
    "Project 1, Project 2," etc?
