as well as other newspapers have a nifty multi-playlist FLV player
on their front page. The Player comes with a playlist that shows
thumbnails for a list of videos. But you can also click on a
drop-down menu and select a different playlist. The drop-down menu
for the playlist selector at the Tribune site even has a scroll bar
within itself. I see that ESA sells a similar player, but they told
me they don't/won't/can't add the drop-down playlist, only buttons.
Are the players on the front of those news sites being built
entirely within Flash? If so, can someone point to a tutorial
please? And if so, can these players be built entriely in Flash 8,
or do they require add-ons, or is this new to CS3?

Yes, the latimes movie player is a full flash application,
that uses asp to get its play list.

When you have multiple playlist and have to create another one and after that adding(selecting one by one) songs from library of 200 or more songs that becomes very difficult. IS there any other way out ?

You need to reRIP the songs as one.
Insert the CD, select the consecutive songs then iTunes menu Advanced -> Join tracks.
You can delete the first songs you imported.

FLV Player with Dynamic Playlist

So this is the first time I've experimented with a Dynamic
Playlist in an FLV Player and I'm learning a lot. I found a
tutorial on the Adobe site similar to what I'm looking to create.

I only mention that, because in the Streaming version, the videos
have the standard Adobe video controls in them, and the Progressive
tutorial does not. Usually I just create my own controls and link
it to the video component that I'm using, but this tutorial is
different than I normally roll.
In the library there is an object type "Video", which I can't
recall ever seeing before. If I delete it from the stage my videos
won't play, so it's definitely important. It doesn't give
parameters like the FLVPlayback does so I can't choose controls on
it. I don't know if there is a way.
Or maybe I need to build my own controls and find a way to
tie them into what we have here, but that would be stretching the
bounds of my knowledge, and I was hoping to have this up soon to
send to a potential employer.
What I'm looking for is some help to get pointed in the right
direction to just add the controls to the player in that tutorial.
If there is an "easy button" somewhere that I can push that'd be
great. If I need to get dirty I'm willing to, but I'm a bit lost
right now.

Yeah I would like to create a Playlist with the by me best rated songs of selected artists i know i can have playlists with multiple artists but that is only possible if i tick match any so that it takes all the songs of those artists and if i select match all there is no song in the playlist...

It is a little tricky, but it can be done by using nested rules. The playlist pictured below will do what you want: all songs by the named artists, as long as the song has 4 or 5 stars.
Note: The ellipsis ("...") button is used to nest a rule. It appears automatically on Windows, but on the Mac you have to use the Option key.

Playing a playlist with multiple albums in Grid View in iTunes 8

Hi All,
Here is a situation I came across, that was quite unexpected compared to the behaviour in iTunes 7.
Suppose I have a playlist with multiple artists/albums. I have this playlist in Grid View. I choose this playlist from the left side navigation tree and press the play button. This playlist is set to shuffle by songs. I expect it to play a song and jump to the next song. iTunes 8 would just keep playing the same songs in the first album listed in the Grid View and would not jump to any other.

In this screenshot above, it will keep the songs in "The Very Best Of". If I press Ctrl+L (show now playing) then it would show only the songs in this album. This quite explains why it doesn't play other songs.
To explain a bit more on what's happening:
If I go to List View the song now playing does not have the Now Playing icon:

Notice it is playing "Opa Opa" but in the List View, it doesn't show it.
This is because in Grid View if you play a song from the playlist, it has its own "virtual playlist"

Why is this the case?

turingtest2: I had already done exactly what you described in the *"Missing Artist or Album not with others by same artist"* section of your article. But what I hadn't done was the advice you gave as the last sentence in this section...*"In addition if you change the Compilation status of tracks they may be temporarily treated as tracks from an Unknown Album, again things should resolve themselves if you close and reopen iTunes".* As soon as I closed and restarted iTunes, the Unknown Album with five tracks disappeared and the tracks were again displayed with the correct album.

What causes multiple Playlists with the same name or with the same name with a numerical suffix to appear?

How about turning off iTunes match. Delete the PL - then reactivate iTunes Match.

Multiple playlists with the same song but don't want duplicates on the iPhone

I have many playlists to organize my music and many songs end up in multiple playlists. I want to have these playlists in my phone but do not want duplicate songs taking up space on the phone. How do I do this?
To be more detailed, I am a musicain and I keep playists of the songs I need to know for different bands that I'm in and often times there are songs that multiple bands require me to know. Also, I have DJ playists that again, will utilize the same song. These are two examples of how one song can be in multiple playlists. I really need these playlists in my phone but I can't have some Beatles song four or five times in my phone. Isn't there a way to import a playlist as a pointer or locator to metadata so the playlist, once imported, just parses through the existing songs on my phone and generates the playist? This seem like it would be a fairly simple thing for Apple to do, no?

So my Playlists and Smart Playlists are only made up of music (plus four or five music videos that don't represent a lot of space), no Audiobooks and no TV Shows.
When I click on my Music folder, it says I have 4.12GB on the bottom (including the Music videos).
Since I don't sync anything else on my 8GB iPhone but this 4.12GB of music, reorganized in Playlists, I don't see why I get a box saying I need 12GB to fit everything in.
So what I do now is manually sync my music, which on my iPhone takes up about 4GB. But I want my Playlists too...
It's as soon as I want to sync on my Playlists that everything goes wrong.
So... do you have any more suggestions/ideas?

Music player with multiple artist/genre support?

Hi,
Can anyone tell me if any of the available media players support multiple values for tags? For example, a collaboration would be listed under both artists.
I find I never use genres because they tend to be really broad, or I have far too many. It seems the ideal solution to this would be a player that supported tags that behave like the type found on blogs etc. I still can't find a way to organise music that doesn't get unweildy with a large collection.
Does anyone have any suggestions for an app that can do this, or has similar functionality?

in my head, im developing a linux based car mp3 player with a custom interface (which i need to build), one of the things i was planning for the mp3 database, is support for tags.. not just the single genre, which seems insufficient...
anyway, not everything is lost, maybe make a feature request to the rhythmbox developers? right now i use rhythmbox's dynamic playlists to include stuff i want to group toguether, but its quite gruesome....

Does quick time/ safari have this capability?
QT (i.e., the QT structure embeded in current Mac OS/device IOS versions) has the ability to switch between alternative audio tracks assuming the file is properly encoded and the compression format is supported. QT 7, QT X, iTunes, and similar app player GUIs can switch between such tracks during playback but the QT plug-in cannot. In a similar manner, devices like TV can switch between such tracks but an iPhone cannot just as an iPhone can select "Chapters" but the QT browser plug-in cannot but an iPhone file programmed with both chapters and alternate audio tracks can be played back through a TV device and access both chapters and alternative audio tracks.
What I want to use is one video track with alternate audio tracks in a set level manifest and play this using HTTP Live streaming. I'm using the manifest mentioned here :

Since I do not use playlists, I am not familiar with the approach in your example. If I want alternate audio and/or video tracks, I create standalone video files with these features built in. Nor do I use RTSP if that is what you mean by "live streaming" of content. If I want to "stream" the content, I use "Fast Start" files programmed to open in the QT player app which supports these features or create reference or QT Media Link files that do the same thing.
As you mentioned, Safari on my iPhone is playing the default/first alternate audio track mentioned but not giving an option to switch tracks.
Neither Safari nor the Video app GUIs on your iPhone have a built in switching option. The only way to switch to alternate audio tracks is to do so with QT 7 Pro or possibly iTunes before loading or streaming the video file. (Am still speaking about a standalone file here and not a programmed playlist/RTSP switch.)
However Quick time on my Mac machine only plays the audio with the the video stream and not the alternate audio track.
The QT player app GUI only switches between tracks that are stored as part of the standalone file. Basically, QT files may contain up to 99 individual data tracks. In alternative audio videos, multiple audio tracks are added to the file by an editor like QT 7 Pro but only one track is designated as "active." All other tracks are designated as "inactive." The QT player GUI allows the viewer to select which audio track he or she wants to hear and then turns off the current audio track and turns on the selected audio track. Otherwise all active tracks would play simultaneously.
Is there a way to switch tracks on my iPhone on Safari?
As previously noted, the default track can be manually changed by QT 7 Pro or, I believe, iTunes (used to have this capability) before actually loading or streaming content.
Does quicktime have this capability?
As far as I know, only with regard to stand alone files programmed with multiple alternate tracks. I am not a HTML, HTML5, or Java programmer so I assume there may be web alternatives here but they would be beyond the scope of my expertise.
Do you know any free player that can do this?
Again, I don't use either playlists or RTSP so I've never had a need to look for/use alternative players that might meet your needs. I simply find it easier to build files that work correctly in current player app/device GUIs already having these capabilities.
Or the very last option, can I build a player to do this? If yes can you suggest where/how I start?
Once again, I assume this might be possible but not part of my experience since, for my part, easier work flows are available.

How to sync with multiple computers?

I have my iTunes library on my MacBook and all of my Apple devices synced accordingly. My family also has an iMac, and I would like other family members to be able to sync from the iMac. I know I can use Home Sharing to allow the iMac to view/play the music when my Macbook is active on the network. I also know I can purchase iTunes Match so I can access the music when my MacBook is offline and edit the playlists. Yet, I would love to be able to set up the iMac so the iDevices could actually by synced with that computer as opposed to mine. How can I go about this?

Yes, you can sync your device with multiple computers. Only that one is set to AUTO SYNC whilst the rest is set to "MANUALLY MANAGE MUSIC".

However, issues may occur leading to data corruption or data loss if you regularly sync Contacts, Calendars, Notes, or bookmarks between multiple computers using iTunes and your iOS device. Syncing once to move your data to a new computer should not cause these issues.

Use Windows Media Player ?to sync. Each device has it's own sync properties. What you are trying to do is a feature of that software. I do not use the Creative software at all...only the Zencast Organizer (as I needed a podcast aggregator anyway).
