Folder Action Start up - beach ball of death
The subject says it all. I can't turn on folder actions because it always ends like this. Does this work for anyone?
Are these Folder Actions ones that you have created, or the standard actions provided by the system? Automator saves Folder Actions that you create as workflows (packages) stored here with normal permissions and user/group ownership as you. If you tried to roll your own outside of Automator, it may be the source of your problems, whether by location or permissions, or more bad luck.
homedir/Library/Workflows/Applications/Folder Actions/
Here is what works via example:
I wrote a UNIX Bash shell script that converted specific types of files based on their extension into html files. This script also called on AppleScript to show an alert dialog listing the illegal files (if any) that were also detected. I wanted to attach this script to a Desktop folder so that I could drag and drop n-files for conversion.
I launched Automator and chose Folder Action. Then I choose Utilities > Run Shell Script. Dragged the latter onto the Automator workspace to the right. The settings for this action looked like the following (click to enlarge):
At the top you see the folder that I will attach the action too. And on the right, I chose input as arguments, because my shell script is reading from its command line.
The full shell script is pasted into the action. The normal shell shebang invocation is removed under these circumstances. Then you tell Automator to save the Folder Action, and exit automator.
Now, you right-click on the target folder, and at the bottom of the menu, is the Folder Actions Setup...
For mine, this is what the dialog should look like.
The Actions folder is irrelevant as it is a test folder for actions. I called my Desktop folder - file2html, and the Folder Action that Automator saved, was called file2html.workflow.
And here is the shell script that went into the folder action:

IPhoto does not start - spinning beach ball of death
Hi
When I try to start iPhoto I get the spinning beach ball of death and the whole laptop freezes.
Cannot force quit, have to restart via power button.
I have tried starting iPhoto while holding the Option key - no difference.
JennOption 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the *command and option (or alt) keys* while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
Regards
TD -
I have no idea why this is happening. I normally use Word, Excel, Google Chrome and sometimes Photoshop when using my computer and then one day it started getting super slow. This is my etrecheck.
Computer running slow all of the sudden. Getting spinning beach ball of death through all applications all the time. Computer losing charge while not plugged in.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. The beachball is literally every other minute. I tried to take the time to it's most basic second and it was 4:01:04 - I am currently backpacking in Laos with my bf and we are travel writers/photographers and he is helping me get this info.
We didn't know what anonymyze meant but we tried to make sure you couldn't see my name. So far the spinning beach ball has occurred 4 times in just writing these 4 lines.
We tried to make sure we didn't overwhelm you with the 4000 lines or more but just did a couple days worth of text. Thanks again for your time.

Spinning Beach Ball of Death (Mainly from idle)
Hey folks..
This might be a long one, so please bare with me !
After about 3 fabulous faultless years of using my Macbook Pro, recently I've had lots of issues with the dreaded spinning beach ball of death !
I wish I could say I was able to narrow it down to one application or one specific event, but sadly it's proving to not be that easy!
Recently, the SBBOD has appeared MOSTLY when the macbook is sitting there idle. I tried all the suggestions I could find on the forums - ie not putting the HDD to sleep, etc etc.
What generally happens, is I come back to the computer - and try to open an application (doesn't matter which one) and it bounces in the dock, and then the SBBOD appears, I can usually get to try and open other apps as this is happening, but in 20 seconds or so - everything is frozen except the mouse. I have tried leaving it for 5 mins, 10mins 2 hours, but in the end the only option is to manually turn off and swtich it back on. I thought it might have been just my user, but I tested when leaving it idle when other users logged on, and in the end - the same SBBOD
This started happening about 3 weeks ago, when I was on Leopard (not snow).
I tried to make sure the HDD was ok - so I install the SmartReporter app to monitor it - and nothing is pointing towards a HDD failure? SMART status is always showing ok.
In the end, I backed up and formatted the HDD. I bought a copy of Snow Leopard and did a total fresh install. I didn't migrate any applications, just user data and re-install all Applications etc.
I have Clean My Mac installed and MainMenu which runs all the repair permissions, and I keep it really clean and efficient since the fresh install - but still, the SBBOD is coming whenever I have the machine idle. I tried also, to install the smcFanControl to cool the CPU incase, it was over heating and then failing??
So, in conclusion (thanks for reading this far !!) I really don't know what else to do?
Seeing as it happened to all users logged in, I can assume it's not user specific?
Meaning it could very likely actually be a HDD issue?
Are there any good free diagnostic tools to see if it is a HDD issue?
I'm almost tempted to buy a new HDD, and install that and not use the Migration Assistant to bring files across, but to just manually bring my information and documents.. thus creating the user from scratch? Are there any opinions on the Samsung SpinPoint M7's ?
Honestly - I'm at a loss here, I can't see what else I can do?
It's a Macbook Pro MA609LL from 2007 3Gb RAM, with a Samsung 500GB HDD (added way back in Nov 2008)
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
CIAO!
AlessandroI would try running the extended version of your Apple Hardware Test.
It's not perfect but may flag something.
DALE -
Working on my friends iMac 20" computer. It is 2.66 ghz, and was running 4mb of ram when the computer started acting up on OSX 10.5.
When I was called over the computer was so slow that I could not even scroll without getting the beach ball of death. I checked the activities moniter, and found an HP application was taking up 46% of the CPU. We attempted to go in and uninstall all of the HP applications, but the computer ended up freezing. Ended up doing a hard shut down, and decided to run disk utilities. Repaired both Permissions, and Disk. Restarted... no difference. Thought of restoring the computer to when it was working fine via Time machine in disk utility mode... failed. Finally resorted to deleting the hard drive, reinstalling Tiger, and upgrading.
After what seemed like forever for the hard drive to erease, attempted to reinstall. Ended up taking almost an hour to verify the disk, and then announced, that it would take 58+ hours to install. After leaving it for 3 hours, the number was going up, and was not installing.
I then thought the problem would be the 2nd party ram. We replaced the paired 2mb's to give 4mb's with the origional paired 1mb's providing now 2 mb's. Attempted to reinstall osx. Same problem 60+ hours after 3 hours of letting it sit.
What to do now? Is it the logic board? Could it be a faulty hard drive? Should I attempt in firewire more from another computer? Do a 7 pass erase over the hard drive? Run Disk warrior?
If anyone could give some info on why this is so blessedly slow that would be great thanks!Decided to try and chek out the hard drive more extensively. SMART, states that it is verified. After running Diskwarrior and repairing all of the disk and the permissions, and running a hardware test, everything seemed to be running fine.
Went back to disk utilities, checked disk and permissions again, verified. SMART states it is verified.
Attemping now to install Mac OSX 10.4.7 from the original install disk. I am currently attemting the basic install, no programs, nothing. It has been over an hour, It is 44% of installing the base system Part 1, announcing 5 hours and 53 minutes.
When I did erase the hard drive yes I selected to write over zeros once. I then erased a second time from Diskwarrior. -
I'm always geting the Spinning Beach Ball of Death, yet instead of it being from having heavy stuff open or not enough RAM, it's as simple as coming out of a screen saver, or clicking a forum button on a browser that can cause it. It doesn't stop, instead it just keeps going until you can do nothing, and can only restart the iMac. Some times you can move the curser around, yet Finder doesn't open the Force Quit and the shortcut doesn't work.
How do you stop geting the SBBD??!! And it's not from a lack of RAM, as I got the max of 4 GB, and just having Firefox and a few much smaller applications open don't use even close to that much RAM. I got 72 Gigs of space left on the man harddrive, so it's not from having too little space there.
Here's some logs from right when the last freeze and restart occured.

Frequent Crashes - Unrecoverable spinning beach ball of death - with 10.5.7
I upgraded to 10.5.6 when it was released. I experienced multiple kernel panics daily, many of which cited graphics related faults. So I reformatted the HD, reinstalled Leopard, and installed the 10.5.5 combo update.
Last week I installed the 10.5.7 combo update along with other minor non-os updates. Now, instead of having multiple kernel panics, I get multiple system Freezes at random. But usually associated with opening or closing dialog boxes (save as..., etc.), progress bars, and opening Apps from the dock. The system freeze is evident by the Spinning Beach Ball of Death. CMD-OPT-Esc doesn't not bring up the force quit dialog box, nor will any menu item be accessible. The temp increases as it's stuck in some loop. The case area near F3 and F4 gets very hot. I installed the Fan Control Pref Pane to force the fans on earlier.
So, still under the assumption that it's a software issue. I did an Archive and Install of Leopard, and upgraded the OS using 10.5.7 combo update. Sadly, the system freezes still occur at random, but still mostly when animating dialog boxes. The last one was when I tried to attach a file in Mail.app (and then again while trying to open the system profiler while writing this post).
The only way out of the freeze is to give the one-finger-salute to the power button, and power down.
At first I thought this might be a software issue like a corrupt file, poorly written driver or kernel extension, or memory leak. But now, I'm concerned that this might be a sign of a failing GPU as the 8600M GT GPUs had some manufacturing trouble.I just updated last evening to 10.5.7 on my 24" White iMac (late 2006) and am having the same issue. I did it first on my 12" G4 iBook without any issues for a week so I went ahead and updated the iMac. I'm using it now with kid gloves. I've disabled Default Folder and DragThing to see if they are incompatible (no updates for either were available at this time) but I also have a feeling my Drobo storage device might be related because Spotlight was indexing after the update. I hadn't used spotlight much because I don't think it was in fact indexing the Drobo before the update. My search results seemed limited to the internal drive. The Drobo firmware and utility are both up-to-date as well.

Beach Ball of Death and Freezing Apps
For the past couple of days, I've been having some strange occurances on my 2007 MacPro (2,1) where, in certain apps, the Beach Ball of Death will appear and the app will freeze or hang. I can be using the app for some time and perhaps do one thing, and the BBOD appears, the app hangs and the only way out is to Force Quit. It has even happened once or twice with Finder which forces a reboot.
The app it tends to hang most in is Toast, especially when I go to burn a DVD. It will start the burn process, then just hang (the optical drive will start to spin up-- as if to start the burn-- then spin down and the BBOD appears. A Force Quit ensues. I can try to burn again and again but no luck, unless I restart the Mac Pro. Then it will work, no problem.
But it has also hung using Mail, Final Cut Pro, Photoshop and especially Time Machine. I've gone as far as disconnecting Time Machine drive just to see if it is the culprit, as the majority of the initial hangs seemed to be associated with seeing the TM menu "clock" spinning, indicative of TM is doing a backup. Except the backup is taking forever and apps begin to BBOD as it spins. I can check the TM Buddy widget, which just says:
"Starting standard backup
Backing up to: /Volumes/TM Backups/Backups.backupdb"
Normally there's a lot more information than these couple of lines, especially if TM has been going a while.
If I try to stop TM using the TM pulldown menu, the BBOD appears and it hangs, yet the clock icon continues to spin. And if I try to Force Quit, it hangs (and on one or two occasions, the Finder has even showed a BBOD and hung. And while I can move the cursor and click around the Desktop, there is no response.) If I click on an app in the Dock, then the icon freezes in the Dock at its Magnification position and I can do nothing to make it go back. Then I usually just do a reboot and all is well for a while.
I did add two extra Gigs of SDRAM about two weeks ago (from Crucial) and no problem. I did use Tech Tool Pro 5 and tested the Memory, which tested okay. Also, I can check Volume Structures with Tech Tool 5 on the main drive and it says everything is good. (I have two internal spare drives and one external firewire 1.5 TB G-RAID) I've used Disk Utility on the OS drive and checked Verify Disk on the Startup Drive and the others and after awhile, it says the hard drive(s) seem to be okay. I've even ran Apple Jack to see if cleaning things up would help but no dice.
The only software I've added (on Monday and the problem started Monday) was a Seagate Diagnostic program to test some external USB Seagate GoFlex archive drives-- these are not always connected or mounted to the Mac Pro. When I started experiencing problems-- and it crashed or hung several times on Monday-- I trashed the Seagate Diagnostic program. The TM has also been shut down and unplugged as I tended to see more hangs and BBOD when it was in a backup process. (The first TM backup of the day goes smoothly. An hour later, when it automatically begins another backup, the TM clock icon spins forever and trouble ensues as noted above)
I'm wondering if it is my main Macintosh drive. It is a 250 GB drive, about 70% full and has worked fine until now. Because the Finder continues to work, even though apps are BBOD or hanging, I'm not sure about that though.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!Do you still have the original installer dvd's? If so run Apple Hardware Test. Also since you recently added more memory also run Rember (a GUI layer on top or memtest). I wouldn't trust TechTool for reliable memory tests.

Hmm, coincidence? Maybe, maybe not.
If the Seagate Diagnostic program was the one I found here you probably did not remove all of it. Specifically the kext's it installs.
/System/Library/Extensions/MaxtorPowSecDriver.kext
/System/Library/Extensions/SeagatePowSecDriver.kext
If they are there move them to the trash (proably need your admin password to allow it) and reboot.
If the Seagate Diagnostic program is not the one I found. The do the following in terminal and post the results:
kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 $7 } ' -
I remember the days when one could reliable and quickly interrupt any process that hung or took longer than expected by pressing “Command + .”. Since upgrading to MacOS 10.4.9 I experience mainly under Safari and other apps many instances where my Powerbook G4 simply hangs and processes a task for what seems to be an eternity. For no apparent reason. Pressing “Command + .” doesn’t do anything nor does “Command + Option + Escape” (how could it when the system is not responding) and usually I decide just to hold the on button down to force my Powerbook into action. Not healthy, I know, but we need to get in with our work. So, my question is: is there any other way to stop the spinning beach ball of death and interrupt a process?
You could launch the Activity Monitor, set it for all processes, and see what might be hanging up. In that app, you can select the hanger, click Quit Process, and either Quit or Force Quit it. That said, however, it appears you have major system problems which need attending to. First backup your machine to an external HD. I suggest a bootable backup/clone, using Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper!, etc. Then, boot with the install disk and run Disk Utility, repairing the disk and permissioins, and the Apple Hardware Test using the extended tests. If the disk passes those, boot back into the machine and see if the SBBOD problem's gone. If not, create a new admin user account, log into it, and check again. If gone, your original accounts corrupted—long an painful process to rectify. If not, then reinstall the latest COMBO update. If that doesn't fix things, then an Archive & Install, saving user and network settings, installation is in order.

Spinning Beach Ball of Death in iTunes when Inserting iPhone into Cradle
Anyone else getting the spinning beach ball of death when inserting your iPhone into your cradle to sync? I'm getting that, but only on my iMac, not my MacBook Air.
Any suggestions?
YoungTurkI'm having the same problem. And it tells me that sync is not activated and asks me if want to activate sync. I say 'yes' and it then say it cannot activate sync would I like to 'override.' This just started happening this week. And it's very annoying. It's as if something is accessing my iphone and keeping iTunes from accessing the phone a while. If I wait long enough it shows up in iTunes. I'm running Symantic Norton Anti Virus. My first guess is there's a virus. Or Norton Anti Virus is trying to access the phone for some reason. I just noticed you now have the option of automatically checking the iphone for virus when connected. But when I deactivate the auto scan of the iphone option the ball still spins for minutes and minutes. I've spent HOURS trying to figure this out. Apple has got to help. I've not installed anything else new to my system in the past few months.

Spinning beach ball of death in iTunes
Everytime that I open iTunes, I get the dreaded spinning beach ball of death. All I have to do is move the cursor and it appears. The sbbod stays around for about 30 seconds or so and then goes away. If I use the search function, it reappears. If I play a song, the song plays ok, but if I try to make any sort of menu selection, the sbbod always reappears and hangs out for a while. I have also noticed that the fan comes on and wants to stay on whenever I have iTunes open. To get the fan to shut off, I have to force quit iTunes.
I have a Macbook circa 2008 running Mac OSX 10.6.8 with all updates installed (except for a Security 2012-001 that refuses to install) I have 147 GB of 250 GB of free space on the hard drive.
Anyone have any suggestions on how to get iTunes to behave like it used to? It used to just work with no problems and no sbbod.
Thanks,
dhruidI'm having the same problem.

Spinning Beach Ball of death during disk utility
Go to disk utility and verify the startup disk, start the disk verification and the spinng beach ball of death coming up. After a minute the result is that the disk is ok. During the verify processing I see only the spinning ball.

Normal. The verify disk operation on the boot volume can take a while and Disk Utility may not be responding to the OS quickly enough so the mystic spinning lollipop pizza comes up for a while. Somewhere there is an actual disclaimer to that effect. It all comes from not being able to dismount the root volume, which complicates the process. -
I get the following error when running Chrome v18.0.1025.163 on my MacBook Pro with MacOS 10.7.3
kernel: IOSurface: buffer allocation size is zero
I have had many tabs crash, then it crashes the Chrome application, then quickly making my entire Mac unresponsive with a spinning beach ball of death. I am not sure if it is Chrome or not, as I tend to do most of my work these days in a browser.
Have others seen this? Is there a fix? What can I do to stop these crashes? As far as I've been able to discover, this bug is specific to WebKit browsers running (Chrome and Safari are based on WebKit). Perhaps it is related to those browsers running plugins (like Flash) and using an IOSurface to pass the rendering data back from the plugin. This issue was constant on my late 2010 MBP and would freeze the machine entirely once a day. Having switched to using Firefox or Opera I no longer see ANY messages for "IOSurface: Buffer allocation size is zero". Thankfully, this also comes without any more freezing when time machine starts up or at any other time.
It looks like there are a lot of changes going on in WebKit relating to IOSurface usage (http://svnsearch.org/svnsearch/repos/WEBKIT/search?logMessage=iosurface). Hopefully this will be fixed very soon. -
Spinning beach ball of death on opening mail
I've been using mail since i had my Mac OS X 10.4.6, however, when I updated to 10.4.9, as soon as i open the program, i get the spinning beach ball of death, making me force quit the application. basically, i cannot use my mail application!!!
Quit the Mail.app and using the Finder go to Home > Library > Mail.
Delete the newly created Mail folder.
Move the original Mail folder from the Desktop back to the same location. Copy the original Mail folder and place the copy on the Desktop for backup purposes.
Using the Finder go to Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist. Move the com.apple.mail.plist file to the Desktop.
Note: Moving the com.apple.mail.plist file out of the Preferences folder will require re-entering all email account information when re-launching Mail.
Launch Mail and if successful, decline any prompt provided to import mailboxes. After re-entering all email account information the same as before, the Mail.app should rediscover the existing account named folders and mailboxes at Home > Library > Mail.
If this is successful, you can delete the copy of the Mail folder and the old com.apple.mail.plist file from the Desktop. -
Macbook pro, beach ball of death
I have a MacBook Pro, OS10.7.5, 2.2Ghz, Intel Core, 4Gb memory. It's annoyingly slow sometimes and the "beach ball" of death apperas regardless of the program I use. It sometimes appears even if I am in Finder and try to open a folder. After about 6 sec, the ball disappears, and I can operate the software. Periodically it comes back, I wait...then go back to using the laptop. Is it the OS causing it? My hardware? My drives? My memory? It's soooo annoying because I have to wait until it disappers so I can continue working. Any suggestions? Much appreciated.
I am having the same issue as above stated. Mac book pro 10.7.5 2GHz i7 4GB 1333 DDR3
The machine is freezing up perodically. Force qui will show Google Chrome as not responding. Trying to quit Chrome does nothing, and the force quit window sits there until there is an error. The error stats the a connection to a windows station had been interrupted and timed out.
The machine is running simultanious RDP sessions into two different Windows servers in addition to that one of the servers is given permission to access the local drive soreport save time is decreased. I followed instructions above and sadly was not lucky enough to find pacesupport. Here is a copy of the report from Etre Check:
