Folder rename bug

When I try to rename a folder, just changing the case from upper to lower I get an error.
Example:
Original folder name: "2008-05-31_Linley VAlley hike"
New folder name: "2008-05-31_Linley Valley hike"
I get the warning message "Could not rename. An unknown error occurred."

Because Windows does not have case-sensitive file or directory names, but allows you to save with any combination of cases, the various versions of a file name that differ only in case are treated internally as identical. FIle.pdf and fiLE.pDf refer to the same file. When you rename a file, it has to be named something different, so it has to differ in some way other than case. In your case, maybe change the folder name slightly when you rename it, then rename again to get it where you want it to be.
E.g., first change "2008-05-31_Linley VAlley hike" to "2008-05-31_Linley Valley hike-x" and then change that to "2008-05-31_Linley Valley hike".

  • Folder Renaming Bug

    Hello,
We have two (2 x 3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon) machines running 10.4.9, networked with a server running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 5.2.3709 Service Pack 1 Build 3790. The Macs are set up as Admin, Managed Mobile user accounts. All work is stored on network file shares.
One of our machines displays strange behaviour when folders are created or moved, from the mac across the network, on any of the fileshares. These issues are-
    1. When a new folder is created on any of the fileshares, from the mac, a duplicate folder automatically appears in the same directory of the fileshare. This file is only visible from the mac.
    2. When a folder is moved from any directory of the fileshare to any other directory, the folder name changes to duplicate a folder name already within the new directory. File names within the moved folder and its duplicate are also affected.
We are extreamly busy at the moment and to reduce the risk of downtime I have been reluctant to run the 10.4.10 update.
    Can anyone help?

certain characters cannot be used for folder or file naming on a mac. it gets confused and the usual pattern of behaviour is it then duplicates a folder or file name by the immediate one around it. the usual suspect that I can think of in folder or file names being cross platformed and that are carried over on networks might be something as simple as the folder name being a date. eg; 9/8/2007. the forward slash / is an illegal character for file or folder naming on a mac because it's system files depend on that character. try renaming folders and files without using chararcters and see if that fixes the problem.

  • Folder rename error - Operating System bug?

I have a strange problem in my 6630. I tried to rename a folder that groups some applications. The folder was renamed correctly, but the "call log" was renamed as well, with the same name as the folder. It's strange, because within the options there is no possibility to rename the call log.
I tried an hard reset, and everything goes back to original. But when I restore the back-up data with PC Suite, the wrong name appears again.
    Anyone knows about this problem?

  • IPhoto 09 folder structure bug

Let me start by saying that I am a big Apple fan. I have a Macbook Pro (end 2006) running 10.6 with a 30 inch Cinema Display, a 23 inch iMac (mid 2007), and an iPhone 3G and a Nano 5th G. I am an Apple Certified Systems Administrator and was also the first person in Japan to be certified on OS X 10.5 as an Apple Certified Support Professional, however I am primarily an Windows Active Directory/Exchange Server engineer.
I have been using iPhoto since version 06 (end of 2006). I upgraded to 08 as soon as it was released then last year I upgraded to 09. Until recently I had about 18,000 photos in my iPhoto library, but due to the issue listed below I have now switched to Windows Live Photo Gallery on Windows 7 for managing my photos (these are synced using Windows Live Sync to my Mac's Photo folder where I then use Picasa for Mac. Sounds complicated but actually not and it means I can import my photos on my Mac or PC and they are synced both ways. Anyway...
I posted the following Bug Report to: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html
If you use iPhoto and don't want to spend days/weeks fixing your folder names and reorganizing photos into correct folders if your library becomes corrupt or you ever want to move your photos out of iPhoto then please provide feedback to Apple so that they know that we are not happy about this.
    Bug Report.
The problem with iPhoto 09 is that the the folder structure inside the iPhoto Library package no longer matches the event names in iPhoto.
Previously in iPhoto 08, when renaming an event in iPhoto the folder structure would also be updated. Additionally splitting or merging events would move the files in the iPhoto Library package's folder structure. This is a major problem for me and many other users on the Apple.com iPhoto 09 discussion forums, and this issue has existed since the beginning of 2009!
I need my photo's folders named correctly for the following reasons:
1). Incase I should ever need to move photos out of iPhoto and to another application or platform, I would' have to spend days or even weeks renaming all the folders.
2). If my iPhoto library ever become corrupt and I needed to recreate it then I would loose ALL my event names (hence the details) if iPhoto doesn't keep the folder names the same as the events.
I have recently spent many hours migrating my photos out of iPhoto and renaming the folders manually. iPhoto really was all I ever needed in a photo management application but with this underling bug/issue I can't trust all my photos to it's library format of storage, but I do hope this gets fixed so that I can migrate back to iPhoto in the near future. Might I suggest that the best way forward for the future would be change iPhoto so that it can monitor folders (the same way Picasa does so, this is open and then gives customers the choice of using multiple apps for accessing their photos).
    Regards,
    Andrew

A bug can be an error or fault in the software but it can also be a design flaw which IMO this is.
No it can't. A design flaw is just that. A bug is when the software fails to works as designed. iPhoto is working as designed. You may prefer it work another way, but that's your preference. Remember you can always use a different product for managing your photos. You're not required to use iPhoto, you know.
Exporting dumps all the photos into a single folder which again doesn't solve either points 1 or 2 that I made.
Yes - if you export the entire Library at once.
If, however, you export each Event in turn (an process that can be automated with either Automator or AppleScript) then it will export to appropriately named folders.
And, as to any issue of corruption, the simple fact is that backing up is the ultimate protection.
What you want will possibly preserve your Event names. But that's all. It won't preserve albums, slideshows, metadata, the relationship between original and modified versions, the non-destructive editing and so on and so forth. All you'll get will be some folder names.
Now that's both your points answered. For the second time.
I'm not sure why there are so many Apple apologists on these forums.
I see, so someone who explains to you that you have misunderstood something, explains to you a better way of doing what you want to do is an "apologist"? Just like your definition of "bug" it's a mite idiosyncratic. And rude.
I am pretty sure that at some point there will be many users who will want to migrate out of iPhoto and when they do they won't be very happy when they realize that they are locked in.
Nobody, I repeat nobody, is locked into iPhoto. That statement is a falsehood. File -> Export and off you go.
we can either sit back and just accept these limitations, anti-competative vender lockins and design flaws or we can voice our concerns to Apple and get things changed for the better of everyone.
Every software has limitations. What you have failed to show is that any of the matters that concern you are actually "limitations". There are no
anti-competative (sic) vender (sic) lockins (sic)
iPhoto works with entirely standard formats. All your files and metadata are easily accessible throughout the OS and can be easily exported.
    Regards
    TD

  • Folder renaming

I've been trying to rename some folders in LR and keep getting the message "Could not rename. An unknown error occurred." Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions?
    Thanks

I am also getting this problem. One thing I did figure out is for instance if my folder was this:
    2007
    ---11
    ------31_Halloween
And I'm trying to change Halloween, I would get that error. However, if I click rename again and then delete the entire word Halloween and type it again all in lowercase, it would work. I have to remove the entire "offending" word I guess?
    What is going on? Bug?

  • HREFTrack won't rename  [ bug report ]

I'm trying to follow the Apple tutorial on creating HREF tracks in a quicktime Pro movie, but when I try to rename my Text Trac to HREFTrack and click enter, it renames back to Text Track and won't complete the change.
I'm very frustrated. This is the BIG reason I even purchased QTPro in the first place and now I'm only finding that at least a few QTPro users have this problem... there is no support phone number, no way to submit a bug report... AND if this is a bug, then it shouldnt' be listed that you can do this with QTPro if it won't do it.
    (feeling a little cheated!)
I realize I might sound a bit nasty in my tone, but it's only because I've STRUGGLED to find an answer online, only to be rerouted to wrong pages, the feedback request didn't work because it said that I left a field blank that was filled in, so I couldn't submit feedback and I see that other people on this message board have this same problem that has gone unanswered.
In terms of a customer support, this is very poor on Apple's part. No one should have to go to this extent to get help on a software program that someone paid for... and it doesn't do what it was said it could do... AND there "seems" to be little to no help for paying customers.
So, yes, I'm frustrated. I just want it to do what I paid for it to do. Is that too much to ask?

    Hi buddies,
My idea is to pop-up a web page while playback a .mov file.
I purchased a pro version key and followed the steps with QuickTime Player for windows available @ http://www.apple.com/quicktime/tutorials/hreftracks.html
    Fron the above html,
    Step 10
"In the Movie Properties window, choose the new text track. Rename the track HREFTrack exactly as shown (mixed upper and lower case, no space between HREF and Track)."
I am not able to rename Text Track to "HREFTrack". I wasted few hours blaming my box.
Please give me a solution to pop-up a web page while playback a .mov file.

  • Find "Other" search fails when "User" folder selected - bug?

I have several partitions on my disk.
On my boot partition, I have 2 .aiff files in a sub-directory of my Documents folder. Using the Finder's "Find" command (not spotlight),
select search for File Type "other" and "AIFF Audio" from dropdown
select the "Users" folder as the only folder to search - "Find" shows no files
select only "Home" to search - finds them.
select both "Home" and "Users" to search it doesn't find them.
select the partition (Called "OSX") it finds them.
select partition "OSX", folder "Users" and "Home" - it finds them
also - I can get Finder to reset with double-click:
With a search that finds them, select the file so its path appears in the panel at the bottom of the window.
Modify the Find to search only "Users". The window clears and no files show, however the path of the previously selected file remains.
Double click on the path name, the Finder resets ( - in other words, quits, closing all open FInder windows, then restarts without reopening any of those Finder windows)
Is this a bug or what?

I was having a very similar problem on my computer. I found that this discussion thread solved my problems.

In short, try re-indexing your drive or home folder. You can do his by opening Preferences->Spotlight, select the Privacy tab. Add your hard drive or your home folder to the list by drag and drop or hit the plus symbol at the bottom. Wait a second and remove the drive or folder. It will take several hours for the drive or folder to re-index but the find/search command will start working correctly right away.
    Hope this helps.

  • Lost mail after folder rename

I just renamed a parent folder in Mail and one of the subfolders lost all the messages in it. After doing a search in Spotlight, I assured myself that the messages are still there. When I click one of them in the spotlight list it opens the message in Mail, but in that window, when I click "show in mail viewer" it comes up empty. How should I go about fixing this situation? I'm using Mail Version 2.1 in OS 10.4.8 on a G5 dual with 3 gigs of ram and 80 gigs of free space.
MacBook Pro and G5 dual   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I can find the mailbox. Let me add some more information about what happened. After renaming the parent box, I tried to move some messages into the child box and got an error. I tried several times. I quit Mail and restarted. I then opened the child box and found that it was empty. I cursed, etc. etc. Then I moved some new messages into the box without a problem. So now the box has some messages in it, but the old ones aren't there. Then I thought of searching with Spotlight and found that the messages exist and can be read, but...where are they? Unfortunately, Spotlight doesn't give you a file name or path. I tried renaming the parent box back to the original name. I fixed permissions. Then I wrote the message to this group. I hope I haven't done too much already.

  • Folder naming bug

Two days ago I upgraded to 10.9.2. Ever since then I've been unable to name any newly created folders or change the names of any existing ones. I am logged in as the administrator.

Does not work for me. Here's what happens; I select the folder. It has two modes: untitled folder" appears in black lettering on grey, or white lettering on deep blue. No editing cursor appears. There is no menu item for renaming from any of the pull down menu bars or in any popup menu.
I've also done a Get Info on the folder. Unlocked the padlock and still there is no editing of the name possible.
I have read and write permission.
There's one exception to all this. I can create a brand new folder and name it to whatever I want. But once I deselect that folder it becomes like all the others, uneditable.
    Very strange and very concerning.

  • Finder folder deletion bug

OK, I've had it with this problem. It has bitten me several times over the years.
Imagine that you have a folder of documents and folders. You use a keyboard command (cmd-delete) to delete one folder after having looked in the folder in column view.
Most times this works fine and only the intended folder is deleted. Several times, including today, the parent folder gets deleted unintentionally.
I have caught it before emptying the trash several times, but again today, it removed the parent folder.
So, is there a magic bullet to prevent this or some traceable way to report it to Apple?
MacBook CD 1.83   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   All OS updates as of posting.

This is a known issue - one of the many downgrades in Finder usability that occurred from 10.3 to 10.4. It's most commonly a sidebar / column view issue. Not a bug exactly, but a sloppy / inconsistent implementation.
If you click on a folder in the sidebar in any view other than column view, the window has focus, but the folder whose contents are displayed in the window is not "selected". Hitting Cmd-delete won't do anything because nothing is selected.
However, if you click a folder in the sidebar while the window is in column, the folder whose contents are displayed is "selected". In this case, if you put a folder in the sidebar, set the window to column view, click on that folder and hit Cmd-delete, it will be moved to the Trash. The window itself won't appear to change, and apart from a momentary flicker of the "File" menu, it won't appear as if anything has happened at all. Emptying the Trash at this point erases the data permanently. The OS X dialogue for emptying the Trash is uninformative compared to its pre-OS X counterpart, further reducing the chances of catching the error.
The reason this occurs is because column view shows multiple levels of the file hierarchy in the same window. When a folder in the sidebar is clicked, it displays the hierarchy as if it were rooted at the folder whose contents are displayed in the window. But it acts as if it were showing you the whole hierarchy, beginning at "Computer". If the whole path is represented in the window, then the folder whose contents are displayed in the rightmost column is inherently "selected". With the view rooted in the current folder, the current folder itself is not visible, so you would never see that it is selected, as it is in 10.4.
It's an inconsistency in selection behaviour between column view vs list and icon view. Many people have lost data over this. My workaround is to avoid putting folders into the sidebar, and that's that. The "home" folder should be safe for non-admin users because of permissions, and the "Desktop" because it is usually "in use" by the Finder. Anything else will have to be "locked" (in which case you can't modify the top level) or else the write access to it's parent would have to be removed, in order to be safe.

  • Folder Renaming - does it impact SUP Deploymnets

Hey -- quick question -- If I want to rename a folder in SCCM 2012 R2 console to something new, but not change the names of the collections w/in that folder, does that break any of my existing deployments targeted at these collections w/in the renamed folder?
I've got a top level folder called SUP - All Server Deployments
w/in that folder I have two collections called
    Servers Manual Patching
    Servers MW Patching
I want to rename the top level folder to SUP - NA - All Server Deployments (for North America).
Are folders just something for human organization in SP? I just want to make sure before I do it.
    Thanks.

Folder names are just folder names. No technical side effects.

  • Complex folder renaming

I must admit that I'm very new after being a long time PC user. I must say that I'm enjoying my Mac / Apple experience.
After many years of taking digital photos and a box full of old cameras, going back to 2 MP, I've got a whopping 30 GB of photos. With each camera, folder naming was different. ie - 2005.01.01 or 01.01.2005 or 01-01-2005 or 20050101 etc.
Does Automator have the ability to read the creation date of a folder and rename the folder that date? Can that be a batch process?
I would like Automator to read the folders in 'photos' and change the name of the folder to the date the folder was created.
    Is that possible?
    Thanks!
    T

    Thanks for the info!
I followed your instructions and everything seems to work... I've made a critical oversight. I'm guessing the transfer from the PC to Mac changed the original creation date. Yikes!
I'll have to figure out how to transfer and keep the original creation dates.
    Thanks again!

  • Batch folder rename

Is there a way to batch rename folders? I have a series of folders that I have inherited and they all have a digit at the end which I would like to remove. I really don't want to do this manually.
I've looked at Automator but can't see a solution there.

Use the following AppleScript when the enclosing folder is in the frontmost Finder window:
    tell application "Finder"
repeat with this_folder in (get folders of window 1)
set name of this_folder to (items 1 thru -2 of (get name of this_folder)) as string
    end repeat
    end tell
