Following reinstall I cant open some files and folders on ext hdd

As per header, the system wont let me change permissions r ownership on the files. If it makes any difference they are pro photo's and are recognised as jpeg & tif format. I get the error message "

if you have Office 2004, Office v.X those will not run on Lion. You can upgrade to http://www.neooffice.org/ t han Microsoft Office 2008, or 2011.

Hi, searching for an excel file I pulled up lots of files but the ones I wanted were ghosted (lighter colour than the ones I could open)....as if they were there but different, the ones I could open were highlighted or coloured properly...If its seeing files on my mac why cant I open? OSX cant open *some* .dmg and .avi files, other open fine

Ive encountered a problem with opening files on my new iMac.
The problem is some .DMG files and .AVI files are not able to be opened, which have previously been fine. Where as some where fine, and still are. The problem files have white icons and are grey'ed out. They cannot be renamed, deleted and moved. These files have previously been fine, I downloaded them, installed or watched them, then stored them on my portable hard drive. They have just suddenly became un-usable.
Its weird how 90% of the AVI and DMG files I have open fine, but some have just suddenly became un-usable. If I go to delete the files, it states they are being used by another application. If I go to change the default opening program from VLC to Quick Time it states I don't have the correct privileges.
Whats going on here?

Yeah I've done that many times. Doesn't seem to make a difference. Don't know what to do now. The problem files seem to be files that I have transferred to the portable hdd since I've had my iMac.
The drive is formatted in NTFS but I followed a tutorial on how to get read and write access. Could it be that osx can't write the files to the drive correctly? I'm not sure. It's weird because the files work perfect for a day or two after copying, but then become un-usable.

Hi. Recently, I have downloaded some files from the internet. But when I want to delete them, it is impossible. Computer asks for administrator code (I am the administrator), which I give allright, but the file just stay where it is. Same thing for some folders. I managed to empty them, but they won't go to the trash. Repairing permissions didn't change anything. Help please. Thx.

Also try highlighting a file and then pressing COMMAND I and see if the file is locked, if so try unchecking the Locked box and try again.

I am having trouble opening a group or package of several pdf files on my IPAD I have downloaded an app that allows me to open a single pdf file, but there are limitations for other files. any suggestions?

I have GoodReader installed and I cannot get it to open a PDF package. I just get a splash screen that tells me that I need to update to Adobe Reader 9 to view the files properly. This is the first thing that I have thrown at GoodReader that it can't handle. GoodReader is well worth the $.

After update, some files and folders don't show in icon view

I had an issue where some existing folders did not show their content in icon view after updating to Mavericks from 10.8 (ie 0 items in icon view, 30 items in list view)
I solved it by going to the "view options" for the folder, and changing the "arrange by" settings from "blank" to any thing else. The update did not transfer the arrange by options correctly.

Problem opening a project into NWDS - Files and Folders disappears!

Hi Gurus,
My co-worker developed a Web Dynpro project in your PC, so I copied all files and folders to my PC.
When I import this project into NWDS in my PC some files and folders strangely disappears physically from Windows causing error in project!
Somebody haves idea what is happening?

Mac won't open some files MasterPlan.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).

I had this problem of not being able to open some files a couple of years ago and eventually was able to fix it but i can't remember how. Any help would be grateful.

Apple keeps books for a short time (used to be 40 days. I've not seen a recent time frame)
What version did you have?
Books do nor exist except in the iPhoto database so you can not "find" a book vista TM. You restore a previous library (be sure NOT to overwrite your current library) and switch to it

Tested your file and it is corrupt.
My only suggestion is to find a backup copy of the file as Keynote files have the reputation of being unrecoverable once they become corrupt.

Here is a post that I assembled for a similar question:
Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta. Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion). While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
Workarounds:
1. If your Mac will support it, restore OS X Snow Leopard;
2. If your Mac will support it, partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it and use the "dual-boot" method to choose between your PowerPC software or Lion/Mt. Lion;
3. Upgrade your software to Intel compatible versions, or find alternative software that will open your data files;
