Font rendering issue in Windows 7 with Aero

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, and using Firefox 19.0.2. Aero is enabled, but the ClearType font smoothing is turned off.
At completely random intervals, text is rendered like this in Firefox:
http://i49.tinypic.com/vgshv4.png
Sometimes it can be fixed as simply as hovering the mouse pointer over the affected parts. Sometimes I have to mark the text to get it rendered correctly, and sometimes it can be fixed by scrolling the page.
It can happen on any sites with any encoding, regardless of the font size and color, but I noticed it's extremely rarely happens with Japanese text. It never affects the whole page, only random parts of the on-screen text, and sometimes the interface text as well. Also worth mentioning that it never happens when Aero is turned off.
Is this a Firefox bug, or is something wrong with my system? Thanks in advance.

I had the same issue, uninstalling windows update kb2670838 fixed it for me. See also:

  • Font Rendering Issues-Help Required Please

In the past week, any Google search on Firefox or Chrome (but not Opera) gives me results where the fonts look gappy. Sometimes there are additional dots above the letters. I uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox from scratch in case an add-on was at fault but even with a clean install I am still seeing the issue. I checked my font settings and do not have any minimum font size set. I have allow pages to choose their own font ticked.
I've uploaded an image where I can see some correctly rendered text and some gappy looking text (not from a Google search but a Mozilla query). It also happens when commenting online sometimes, during typing it will be gappy but it will show properly once submitted. Any ideas for a fix would be warmly welcomed and I can give more examples if that would help. Although it's not Firefox related, I did restore all defaults in Chrome and it didn't fix the issue there either.
I uninstalled the most recent Windows Update since the problem is recent but it didn't change anything. I'm not sure if browsers would even look to my computers fonts.

hi Auds77, this is probably caused by microsoft update kb3013455 which can cause font rendering issues on vista:
<blockquote>After you install security update 3013455, you may notice some text quality degradation in certain scenarios. The problem only occurs on systems that are running Windows Vista SP2 or Windows Server 2003 SP2. Microsoft is researching this problem and will post more information in this article when the information becomes available. </blockquote>
    reference: https://support.microsoft.com/kb/3013455
one option may be to [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/remove-update#1TC=windows-vista roll-back this particular update] for now until there is a fix by microsoft or you could also look if there is a [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL|graphics driver update]] available on the website of the vendor (intel/amd/nvidia) which might also resolve this problem in some cases.

  • Font rendering issue / Mountain Lion / non Apple LCD display

    Hello
This font rendering issue or problem is probably well know by Apple crew too but nobody has solved it yet. Only poor solution are available such as try to adjust manually font rendering by writin some scripts concerning anti alias levels...they really dont solve the problem.
Could Apple bring us solution to this by developing or updating Mountain Lion?
So what is the problem: font rendering is very poor in Mountain Lion when using non Apple LCD. For example Fujitsu SL27T-1 LED (LCD displa) shows fonts very nice way in Windows but in Mac OS ML does not. Somebody told me that its about software vs. hardware rendering. Dont know about that but could you bring me the solution which is not advising me to buy Apple display (which is five times more expensive than other manufactures displays).

just want to add that overall fonts look blurry and they are not very sharp.

  • Font rendering issue & multimedia keys not working

Hi, yesterday i switched to KDEmod 4.1 and I have two major problems...
One is font rendering issue... I did not change anything in my font-related packages (cairo, freetype, fontconfig, libxft) and i have to add that this setup worked perfectly in KDEmod 3.5.9, but now it looks like this:
This bug occurs only in qt apps and mostly in kmenu... i.e firefox renders my fonts flawlessly...
Second problem are multimedia keys on my keyboard...
They worked in KDE 3.5.9, but now I cannot set them up properly... Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't...
KDE recognizes the pressed key, but when I assign specific action and press the key, just nothing happens...

You might be able to solve your font issue by going to System Settings -> Appearance -> Fonts.  I enable ant-aliasing.  I also clicked on configure and select "Use sub-pixel rendering" to RGB and the hinting style to Full.  I also use the Force fonts DPI to 96 DPI.  This makes the fonts pleasing to my eyes.
This is how I got my multimedia keys to work in KDE4.1:
Go to System Settings -> Regional and Language and make sure to set the County or region to your location.
khotkeys needs to be running.  I added it to the autostarted progam list. System Settings -> Advanced tab -> Autostart
When I got the multimedia keys working, I was really tring to get the keyboard shortcuts to work.  In addition to the above steps, I also deleted
~/.kde4/share/config/kglobalshortcutsrc.  I do not know if deleting this file is needed to get the multimedia keys working, but it was to get the keyboard shortcuts woring.
    Restart X
Go to  System Settings -> Keyboard and Mouse -> Keyboard Shortcuts
I set the volume control in the KMix component section.
To get the keyboard shortcuts to work, go to the menu editor and select the program you want to create a shortcuts for.  Click on the advanced tab and create the shortcut in the shortcut field.  Save.
Then go to  System Settings -> Keyboard and Mouse -> Keyboard Shortcuts. Change the component to KHotkeys.  Select the Program and then select the default shortcut that you just created.  (This works for the multimedia keys aswell).
    Hope this helps,

  • Weird Font Rendering Issue?

Okay i was looking fo some back up drives online, and i stumbled upon:

    it renders like this:
    http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/4641/picture3rn0.png
    http://img218.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picture4dr1.png
but for some reason on my MacPro 2.66 the font renders odd in FireFox (doenst do it on Safari. and ive tried this exact sit eon my MacBookPro and it looks fine on Firefox.
I have the following installed (on both machines)
    -FireFox 2.0.0.9
    -Microsoft Office 2004
    -Adobe CS2
    -Macromedia Studio 8
theyre practically identical with programs & fonts installed, the only fonts that are installe are the ones that wer epreinstalled with the system, and that came with Office 04 and CS2
any way to maybe fix this issue?

hey! well i tried your site url on my MacPro and i have the same issue, so it must be a macpro thing? lol
im running the latest firefox and no additional fonts installed other than the ones you have listed yourself (office, cs2, macromedia)
so dont fret. i tried using font finangler and onyx to clean the font cache, (not sure i fhtat was a good idea,) but it shows up on mine so your not the only one! ive tried on two different macpros one wiht out any programs and it does the same thing. so it must be something with the wya its rendering on these machines.
at first it hought maybe something got corrupted in my system aswell
    hope that helps!!

  • Can anyone make --this fix-- work for the FONT rendering issue?

I found this bug report and proposed fix on the webkit buglist:
    http://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14070
Here is a link that one says can be used to fix the
    rendering issue with bold fonts.
If anyone can make this work for Safari 3 on XP please let me know....
Here are the text and link to the how to:
You can fix rendering issues by changing language for non-Unicode programs. The
    instruction:
    http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/handson/user/xpintlsupp.mspx#EVE
You should restart system after applying setting.
    Hope this helps someone
If not, then call apple support and complain....
maybe if their support phones are getting hot... then they
    will fix this horrible bug

I don't believe this is a support issue, it's rather a Bugdev issue. Use the Bug-Report field in Safari to report this directly to the engineers. I also think the bug is known and will be solved, it's therefore not really in the range of AppleCare. (Beta Software is usually unsupported!)

  • Font rendering issue: Win7+Cp5.5 vs. XP+Cp4

Hello all, here's the issue: font rendering when publishing under XP is perfect, crisp, and sharp, while on Win 7 looks blurry...
I tried different versions of Captivate, different fonts, font settings, enabling/disabling cleartype. Nothing works and I'm really desperate to get old XP crisp look. Anyone experienced that? Any ideas? Thanks in advance for sharing.

The Windows 7 version is definitely anti-aliased while the Xp version is not.
In Win 7, right click on the desktop, and select Screen Resolution.
Click the link to Make Text and Other Items Larger or Smaller.
Make sure it is set to Smaller - 100% (default).
Click the link in the left navigation panel to Adjust ClearType Text.
Tick the box to turn on ClearType.
    Does that help?

  • Authentication issues on Windows 7 with Internet Explorer 8 (Crystal 2008)

    Hi,
We are in the process of migrating from Windows XP to Windows 7 (with Internet Explorer 8).
I have noticed that a web application which depends on Crystal 2008 is behaving differently in the new environment. For example, when I try to load a report I get this error:
Access to report file denied. Another program may be using it.
I know that this error can be caused by a permissions problem on the Windows temp folder, and I know there are various ways of pinpointing the exact permissions problem and various ways of resolving if that's the case. The fix that worked for us in Windows XP does not seem to work in Windows 7. My gut feeling is that IE is passing credential in some way differently from how it did before.
Since many aspects of security are so different in Windows 7 compared with XP, I was hoping to find some general guidelines from SAP/Crystal re: how to deploy or configure the client/server in this environment.
Are there any general guidelines available?
Thank you for any help... shannon

    Hi Shannon,
Not really, CR assumes it can access all of it's dependencies so it is a permission issue. Other than the usual config issues with IIS, full access to the      emp folder, full permissions on the Viewer folder, setting the framework in App pool correctly, etc.
Do you have Service Pack 3 installed for Cr 2008 and the latest Fix Pack 3.5?

  • [solved] Pango font rendering issues

I'm having issues with pango rendering of pcf fonts. I was trying to set up a new font for my awesome theme, but my choices are fairly limited because all the pcf fonts are rendered as some default font. So then I was going around googling the issue, and font that awesome renders fonts using pango. I then tried to use pango-view to view the pcf files, and it displayed the same default font. These fonts show up fine in xfontsel and they render properly in urxvt. In my googling I found someone on slackware was facing a similar issue back in 2010, but no solution was posted. Is this a known/common problem, and does anyone know a fix?
Edit: I'm not sure if this matters, but I also have freetype2-infinality installed from the AUR.
Last edited by HalfEmptyHero (2011-12-22 13:10:13)

Wow, I can't believe it was that simple. I had read my fontsconfig rules, however I'm new playing with fonts so none of it really meant anything to me when I originally read it, and I simply changed a few of the default fonts.. Going back over it now, it makes a lot more sense. Thanks for the help.

  • Font Rendering issues in export to PDF-SSRS

    Hi,
Its a very strange issue,I am facing from last two days.
I have created a report having text with Gill Sans MT font.I am able to see the text in the mentioned font properly on report server as well as on my development machine.
Issue occurs when I export the report to PDF, as when i open the report in acrobat reader to view the font of the rendered text,it shows the font as Gill#20Sans#20MT which causes the text rendering up in Arial(default font).
If I Export from Word document the font is set as GillSansMT i.e name without spaces and text is rendered in correct font.I have installed the required font on both the locations i.e. report server as well as Development environment.
    Thanks & Regards,
    AS

    Hi Anand Sardesai,
Since the Gill Sans MT font is not been installed on the production server at first. Please make sure the font is installed correctly and that font embedding is granted font. If the referenced font is not installed on the report server, the resulting PDF
file might not contain the correct mappings and might not display correctly when viewed.

  • Totally perplexed, fonts rendering bad on Windows (IE & Firefox)

    My site
    http://www.bluearsefly.com
is almost complete but I tested it with a Windows machine and font looks terrible. It looks perfect on My Mac with both firefox and safari. But with windows XP / 2000 with both Firefox and IE it looks aweful.
I also had friends around the world try it and it looked aweful to them as well in IE.
Any advice would really be appreciated. I know it has something to do with fonts but what ... im not sure
    Cheers

Hi there thanks for the quick reply.
Yes its one of Suzanne's and you aree spot on, Suzanne suggested the same cross platform issue.
I dont really want to convert to PNG as I would have to apply that to the whole site , including dynamic stuff like the diary (aka blog).
Suzanne suggested trying a standard font like Verdana for the benefit of windows people , which at the end of the day still account for the majority.. at least for now.
Ive been researching on this forum (which is excellent by the way) and was wondering if it could be some font duplication / missing font issue? I dont see to have a LucindGrand-bold font nor is it defined in Suz's CSS? I have duplicate arial fonts (difff versions) but thats not being used in the site so im not sure how that would effect things.
    Very strange indeed
Incidently if i look at Suzannes templates at her site on a windows machine the font looks nasty as well. but I dont recall it looking nasty a few months back..
Thats why Im confused.. what could have changed?
    appreciate any further thoughts

  • TLFTextfield font rendering issue

I'm having some problems with Flash Pro CS6, some fonts appear to be rendering correctly only when using classic Textfields but the appear messed up in TLFTextfields. In my case I opened a CS5.5 document in CS6 and all the typography looked wrong.
I haven't tested all my fonts but I've noticed this happening with Helvetica Neue (OS X Lion system font), bold in my case and ITC Franklin Gothic Heavy. I also noticed that this deos not happen with all fonts, Arial for example looks identical when using either TLFTexfield or a Textfield.
Below is a screenshot of the issue in action, I've marked the TLFTextfields with TLF. Is this a bug? Any workaround suggestions would be great.

    Here you go,
    Classic
    TLF
    Photoshop
I would still say the TLF render looks wider and stretched. The Classic render is actually slightly thinner that the Photoshop version.
So, all this is interesting but how do I find out if this is just how it is with TLF or if there is something that can be done?
    Much thanks,
    Sam
    Edit__________
I just saw your images. They are sooo similar to each other compared to what I am getting. I am using Mac OS X Lion and Arial Regular (not bold).

    Hi,

This happens across different applications. (the bottom of the letter 'c' is missing in both Firefox and in Thunar. Different letters are effected on different boots. This affects multiple fonts (I use DeJaVu Sans in Firefox and thunar, but I have the same issues in Sakura (using the Terminus font).

  • Font rendering issue after motherboard upgrade

    This is a strange one.
Took hard-disc containing 10.6.7 out of a 2006 MacBook and put it in a 2007 MacBook.
Everything is working 100%, except for some slight differences in fonts. In some apps, they are rendered thicker (seeming only when shadowed), but in one web page (GitHub.com looking at chagesets), a section is rendered with weird Capital A with a box around it (like a WebDing of a picture of a key cap).
Of course, only Safari renders this page that way. OmniWeb and FireFox don't.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Nigel --
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!

We've got a font expert here, and here is Kurt Lang's opinion on capital A's in boxes:
Quote from Kurt Lang on this subject:
+A’s with boxes around them is always a sign of trouble with the main system+
    +font, Lucida Grande.+
+Quick possible fix is to remove ALL font cache files from the system to see+
+if it's just bad cache data. For that, you need to use OnyX or other utility+
+which will remove both system and user cache files. A Safe Mode boot won't+
+work since it only removes cache data from the user account you do a safe+

+If after that the problem returns, then Lucida Grande itself is damaged and+
